Overnight Open Thread-Oktoberfest Edition! [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

What's up 'rons and 'ettes!! Sorry about last night but I was just worn out from work this week. Thanks Ben for capably filling in!

Well as you can tell from tonight's theme, Oktoberfest started today. Now how many of you know what Oktoberfest is about? That is, besides bier, dirndls, lederhosen, brats and, well, boobehs.

The History Of Oktoberfest.

The Oktoberfest tradition started in 1810 to celebrate the October 12th marriage of Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig to the Saxon-Hildburghausen Princess Therese. The citizens of Munich were invited to join in the festivities which were held over five days on the fields in front of the city gates. The main event of the original Oktoberfest was a horse race.
Of course, I'm sure the 'rons are bored by this Oktoberfest history by now so here's a little something to perk you guys up. Oktoberfest Colossal Cleavage Collection. Probably NSFW or Kratos.

Funny Commercial

Europeans have some of the funnier commercials out there and this one is pretty good. Be careful when you use vegetables. Especially if you are gonna eat 'em!

Weekend At Bernies For Reals?

You gotta be one sick puppy to do this. Two Men Barhopped With Corpse. All this to get out of having to pay for drinks? I guess on the bright side they flagged down a cop car and told them they think their friend was dead when they were done partying. They've been charged with Abuse of a Corpse.

Robert Jeffrey Young, 43, and Mark Rubinson, 25, allegedly loaded Jeffrey Jarrett into a car after finding him unresponsive at his southeast Denver home Aug. 27. The two then allegedly went to Teddy T's bar and grill and Sam's No. 3, leaving Jarrett in Rubinson's Lincoln Navigator, while they drank -- on Jarrett's tab, The Denver Post reported. They also allegedly used Jarrett's bank card to get money out of an ATM.

Later, they took Jarrett's body back home, went out for a meal, withdrew $400 more and headed for a strip club, police said.

Saw Accident

Ouch. Man Accidentally Cuts Off Own Penis. What the hell? I did some carpentry back in the day and I can't really imagine how you cut off your pecker unless you are really, really doing something wrong. I love the comment his mom makes.

"Stuart is a carpenter and uses sharp and sometimes dangerous tools," Keen's mother said.

"This was an unfortunate accident but these things happen all the time to people in his profession."

Hah. Yeah right. Sawing off your penis happens all the time in the carpentry business.

Caturday Video

I bet this cat does not cut his pecker off. Just sayin'.

Who knew? The unions seem to have gotten to the kittehs judging by this one just going through the motions of trying to catch a rat.

Medal Of Honor

Hey Hollywood, here are some ideas for some movies. Dakota Meyer And Nine Others: What They Did To Receive The Medal Of Honor. Real acts of valor and heroism.

Hollywood News

Take note George Lucas. Looks like your pal Steven Spielberg has learned from his error of erasing guns from E.T. and using CGI in place of the muppet E.T. from the upcoming Blu-Ray release. I must say, I've got the Star Wars Blu-Ray's and the Original Trilogy looks awesome in blu. The colors are outstanding and sound is vastly improved over the DVD editions. In fact, I really started to enjoy watching the movie and then some Special Edition crap would show up and it was jarring and looked like shiite. Should've just left them alone George. I did note that most of the matte boxes around the fighters have been fixed. Still a few of them and when they do show up, are pretty noticeable.

Yikes. Top Gun 3D. Really. I wonder if Ice Man will have his teeth jump out of his mouth and towards you during that scene in the locker room. Although, I'm sure the 'ette's can't wait for this scene in 3D.

And one more sign of Hollywood running out of ideas. Hey, let's remake Point Break!

War Pron

A-10 VS Taliban. Poor little feller.

Actually, I don't drink much at all. Perhaps 5 to 9 adult beverages a year (maybe less, depending on the year).

one of those "high on life types", eh?

I didn't start drinking until I was about 24. I hated the taste of beer and hard alcohol. All I could stomach was wine. However I guess my tastebuds changed or dulled since my youth. Because I do enjoy beer now

In fact, I really started to enjoy watching the movie and then some Special Edition crap would show up and it was jarring and looked like shiite. Should've just left them alone George. I did note that most of the matte boxes around the fighters have been fixed. Still a few of them and when they do show up, are pretty noticeable."

Absolutely agree. The transfers are fantastic and the special features (especially the deleted scenes) are amazing, but the lack of the original versions is a serious buzzkill.  I don't care that the SE versions exist; just give us the originals as well.

Okay Francis calm down without prejudice and read my posts. I did not make any references to people stinking in Europe. I was speaking from my own experience. I know from a fact and from experience that people shave and shower often in Europe, it's just that in the 80's, a lot of German women felt that shaving their armpits or legs wasn't necessary.

131 Speaking of Medal of Honor. Here's my favorite citation. I see the event has it's own Wiki entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Old_666 Summing up, the crew took an B-17 that was going to be cannibalized for parts, stuck in another 6 or 7 machine guns ("These modifications made Old 666 the most heavily armed bomber in the Pacific Theater.") and, on June 16th 1943, took it on a long range recon mission to Bougainville. Little Did They Know "Apparently unbeknownst to Allied intelligence, the Japanese had moved about 400 fighters into the Solomon Islands on June 15." During the mission they flew over an airfield and observed 22 fighters taking off. They Continued The Mission. 666 was intercepted by SEVENTEEN Japanese fighters and had a 65 minute running battle. Two Medals of Honor were awarded due to that engagement. Capt. Jay Zeamer, Bombadier Joseph Sarnoski (posthumous). Every other member of the crew got a DFC.

I lived along the wine valleys of the Mosel river. The funnest times for me were the winefests each wine village had. I still have my collection of 40 village wine glasses they sold.

Speaking of Oktoberfest, we just got invited to our friends' annual Oktoberfest Party in a couple of weeks.  My girlfriend's mother is from Germany and she makes all the food--homemade bratwurst, bockwurst, sauerkraut, sauerbratten, schniztel, spaetzle, you name it, it's all there.  Oh and big homemade soft pretzels.  They have one of those little bands that play the concertina and accordian in lederhosen and those little alpine hats, it's so much fun.  As soon as you walk in the door, they give you this boot stein you can wear around your neck and drink your beer out of. They live in a giant house and invite over 100 people every year.  It's soo much fun!

Wall Street Protest Begins, With Demonstrators Blocked

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at September 17, 2011 10:52 PM (c0A3e)

From the above link:

As a chilly darkness descended, a few hundred people realized one of the dayÂ’s objectives by setting foot onto Wall Street after a quick march through winding streets, trailed by police scooters.

At William Street, they were blocked from proceeding toward the stock exchange, and the march ended in front of a Greek Revival building housing Cipriani Wall Street. Patrons on a second-floor balcony peered down.

As some of the patrons laughed and raised drinks, the protesters responded by pointing at them and chanting “pay your share.”

Beck read a quote yesterday from one of the organizers who said he had hoped 40,000 protesters would come to Wall Street, however, they would be happy with half of that amount.

It sounds like they were lucky to break 400.

Yeah, it never works to have someone not-smart play someone smart. That's part of why the first Iron Man worked so well -- Robert Downey Jr. really was smart enough for the part. 280 I think I'm caught up...

I like beer (prefer Terrapin Double Rye and Blackened Voodoo but will drink Bass Ale in a decent dive and Bud Light in a real dive). I also like whiskey and I'm not too picky about it. Gin needs to be Bombay Sapphire or Hendricks if it's in my martini, New Amsterdam in cocktails, and any gin in a gin and tonic.  Shaving, grooming, and hygiene are critical and not to be ignored.

282 Chique d'Afrique: I'm SO with you on the beer thing. Pour it back in the horse! Frostie Root and Pennsylvania Dutch Birch are the only beers for me. (BTW: Philly area, Africa and a hate for brewskis. We have more in common every day.)

People often find it charming that I don't drink. Until they find out that I also don't drive, at which point they find it weird.

I'm not going to feel guilty about maligning a country that invented the word scheisseporn.

haha,

Herman Cain has said his popularity in Republican primary polls proves the Tea Party isn't racist. But that doesn't mean his supporters avoid the issue of race altogether, because his communications director, Ellen Carmichael, tweeted Friday, "People are calling & asking where they can purchase their 'Honkies for Herman' and 'Crackers for Cain' bumper stickers. We don't make those."

Older Uwe Boll was so bad that it was funny.  The newer Uwe Boll movies, and admittedly I've only seen bit and clips of his newer ones, are better from a production standpoint, but they aren't even funny to watch anymore which makes them (paradoxically) worse than this older films.

Hey GGE.  I mentioned on the RI meetup thread this afternoon that you were looking to set one up here.  Got some interest...and Vic said he'd come if we wait until after his restriction period is over.

Tilted Kilt, Charlotte. Time and date TBA. Anyone interested email at lpcard (at) hotmail dot com, include Moron Meetup in the subject line, let me know when would be best.  I'll set it up if I have enough interest.  It's about a 3 hour drive for me, so there has to be some interest before I'll even bother.

Oops, didn't know that.  Yahoo you have to sign up for, I don't know what kind of hoops are involved for a hotmail account any more.

I had a K car, too. What kind of motor did you have? The K car had a 2.2 or 2.5, belts not chains. The carberated models had Weber clones made by Holleys, after 85 or so they were fuel injected. Mine died a horrible death by Jeep, but I did get my moneys worth out of the old POS.

Just don't bring your hardware, it's unlawful to go armed in any place in NC that sells alky-haul for consumption on the premises.

379  True confession .... I came within a whisker of cutting myself  in the "lower abdomen"  with a skilsaw .
I was cutting a whole bunch of stakes for use in footer forms . You have to hold back the blade guard with your thumb when making repetitive cuts at severe angles like those needed on the sharp end of a two by four stake . Any way ,,, my superintendent and another carpenter were talking to me at the same time and I got distracted  .    Cut right through my nail apron but not my blue jeans .  I've always worn my apron with the nail pouches in front rather than on the back which was ,,,,, fortuitous that day .
Jeeeeeeezusss !!!
I'd only been in construction for about 18 yrs when that little bit of carelessness occurred .
Ya'll have some fun with that while I go throw up .
Still makes me queasy to think about !

Posted by: Ima Wurdibitsch at September 17, 2011 07:57 PM (otfJ1)

386 anyone know why in the hell Oktoberfesrt is in September?

Long story made (mercifully) short (in case anyone actually cares): Original festival was, as mentioned, celebration of a royal wedding - everyone had such a great time, what with food, drink, frolic, horse-racing, general debauchery, numerous next-day hangovers of memorable magnitude, etc., a certain crowd decided to make it an annual event-and to extend the festivities into a couple of weeks. The good folk (and likely some of the bad'uns,as well) recognizing a good touristy-type thing in the making (subsequent years drew lots of "me-too" types from the surrounding areas), and wishing to both extend said Good Thing and somewhat-protect it from incipient competitions (...those surrounding areas...), set to work to promote it as a celebration of the onset of the end of the Harvest Season - the following month of Oktober. Thus, Oktoberfest -

The brau dispensed in those quart-plus steins is not your standard draft suds, either - it's Marzbrau, and it gets brewed and cellared in March, to build strength and alcohol content, so that by September it's up in the fortified-wine region of percentage-alky content. For brewed, undistilled products, that's genuine pop-skull territory - it gets pretty drunk out in those big beer-tents very quickly and stays that way, basically, for a month.

Fun!!

As to the now-penilely-challenged semi-carpenter, two thoughts: 1) Been, off and on, a carpenter/cabinet maker for roughly 4 decades, and although I did have one close encounter of the wrong kind between several fingertips of the left hand and a table saw (still got working fingers, but fingerprints got rearranged a bit), never even come close to anything in the region between waist and knees, and can't really imagine how such could happen (unless, of course, he was doing something very naughty and incredibly perverse), and 2) I don't know that I'd want to have anything to do with employment of someone that careless of their more-delicate anatomical features around anything sharper than, say, ordinary fruits and vegetables - certainly not in close proximity to saws and chisels and such...

Just sayin'

Liked the cucumber sandwiches bit, though -

Nope, it was American.  Although I see the early models did have that crap Mitsy POS motor with the crap Mitsy carberator before they got the 2.5 FI.  The rest of it though? Built in Belvedere IL, along with the Omni. The big selling point at the time was the whole Made in the USA tag they could stick on them.

Sorry to hear you got the one with the crap motor. The 2.2 was actually a fairly good powerplant, although grossly under powered for a 6 passenger car. About the best thing I could say about my Aries is that it was...adequate.

Nope, I got mine from a friend right here in NC.  +1 on getting him some ammo, you can get tins of it at 440 rounds per can, they look for all the world like canned ham cans.  Get the can opener with the can.  Cheap ammo, which is one of the good things about owning a Mosin - they are cheap to feed. I'm taking it out to check the sights on it again and then I'll be shooting it in a Vintage Military Bolt-Action Rifle match. I'll likely shoot the Arisaka as well, but I'm guessing the Mosin will do a better job. The Arisaka shoots high at 200 yards, once I get the Tennessee elevation figured out it should do OK. (before you ask, the Arisaka is a Type 30, yes 30, carbine, made sometime around 1901 or 1902. 6.5x50mm.)

HA doesn't allow the Star Wars reference wither-also you can't type affirmative action or butch rhymes with tyke.

The last person to get banned was jimbo after he made snide comments about Mrs. Morrisey.

451 The Internet is great for fantasy. Here in the Internet world, I've been married to Shannon Tweed for 15 years and every night we act out some salacious scenes from her 90's Skinemax movies, .

It's also great for music. Someone linked a disco song in the sidebar today and after segueing through several 80s songs, ended up here.

Hey cj, I hang out in Colorado a lot and read an article about a guy who homebrewed and now owns Drydock Brewing, and in his first year won a gold medal somewhere, so now they're famous. I hate BMC beers and am really into flavor and hops. The funny thing is, we're such idiots and have never messed up a batch--brewing is easier than it sounds.

A foul reputation gained by idiots trying to shoot through training rifles that didn't have rifling in the barrels or the ones that were built to fire blanks only.  When you hear they were crap chances are you are hearing about someone trying to use a trainer as a real rifle.

Even the last-ditch type 99s were good shooters, although cosmetic corners were cut during their manufacture (EG, the welds on the bolt weren't ground smooth and the barrels were not chrome lined). The T99's were 7.7mm, BTW. After the war there was extensive testing done on all the bolt-action rifles used in the war and the T38/T99 was superior to anything else out there, even the German Mausers and the American Springfield 1903's.

1) If you've taken to violating yourself with a cucumber, wouldn't you just throw it away when finished?

3) For God's sake, if you're that desperate, get yourself a sonic toothbrush, woman.

Yeah kits are the way to go for starters...like 30-40 bucks at Northern Brewer. I think our first batch was an IPA. Somebody with your background could tear it up, chemjeff.

What a fuddy - duddy.  I bet that prof had well attended classes with kids who paid attention.

RE how long - if you want a batch for Halloween time is getting short.  Unless you're going to put it in a keg and force carbonate it (more equipment that you'll acquire later if you like the hobby) it takes two fermentations.   The first one often 7 days or so to let the yeasties make the alcohol, and the second one of several weeks once the beer is bottled to allow carbonation.

Everything has to be cold, and do the math on the volume of dry ice. If you can get the beer to a slushy stage it will work best. This way you don't get the dregs from the dead yeast on the bottom of the bottle, which is ugly. And...sometimes the dead yeast taste nasty.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde at September 17, 2011 09:25 PM (qh6hc)

556 My mom and my aunt thought it would be a great idea to do homemade root beer so they whipped up a batch and stored it in my and my sister's bedroom closet.  I was about 7 years old, and I remember the terror of waking up one night scared shitless because things were going pow-pow-pow in our closet.  Some of our clothes got ruined, like our frilly dresses we wore to church as little girls did way back then, but most were able to be washed and were fine.

Oh, I DO! I DO! It's just that I want the ones listed before I get the M1 or M1A.  I have two bolt-action vintage military rifles but I want the Model 700 for hunting (not that I have been hunting for a very long time, but if I had a Model 700 in 30.06 I might go), and the model 94 cause I like lever actions. I have a Grok 36 in God's chosen caliber (.45) but I want the .357 to replace the Taurus I once had. I have a Franchi semi-auto that covers the "Remington 1100" angle pretty well, plus I have a pump Mossy, so I have enough shotguns to hold me until I get some more pistols and rifles...and then I want a Saiga 12 which I will then convert to the AK trigger group like my Saiga/AK Evil Black Rifle...and then I want...and I want...and I want...

I have a collection, I'm working my way up to a stockpile, but one day I want to have an ARSENAL! cause that would be just too f'n cool...

567 Well, here are all these damn gun nuts again.

Happy with my old .22 Hi Standard. Love to plink.

Had a Model 29 years ago. Fucker almost took off my arm. Shot the shit out of the gun, but never really liked it. Bullets were a buck each, way back in 1981, as I recall. Bought it because a drunk company man on an oil rig walked into my trailer, pointing his loaded 30-06 at my head. Told him the next time he did that shit was going to be the last. The stupid prick - we were on a Federal lease out there in White City, New Mexico, right below Carlsbad Caverns.

I kept that fully loaded Model 29 close at hand the rest of the long well. I wasn't fucking around. Turned out the bastard was wanted for manslaughter back in Huntsville. He ripped off Superior Oil for 20 thousand in equipment and took off. I became the hero, but I was so sick of Superior Oil that I never worked for them again, the fuckers.

Have had lots of .38s and .32s over the years. Used to collect Diamondbacks.

I'm sort of a Bambi-lover. Hate to hunt.

NSAIDs will decrease or eliminate fever, so temperature is no longer a good indication of progressing illness.

There is nothing wrong with being safe. If you are uncomfortable and the pain and swelling have not decreased, go to the ER. And...if your insurance company has a help-line they might be able to give you good advice before you go.

Just saw the movie "Horrible Bosses".  I went in with zero expectations.

It was the funniest movie I've seen.  Ten times better than The Hangover.

Posted by: Erik L at September 18, 2011 04:06 AM (v6xW/)

Thanks Erik, I knew that. It's been a long time (a little over a year, she died last June) of lung cancer so we had time to prepare for it. Not enough time, but there never is. We had a good 16 1/2 years and I have no regrets. Scars, but no regrets.  I'm good.

Posted by: GGE of the Moron Horde at September 18, 2011 04:18 AM (qh6hc)

There's never enough time.  I know what that would have done to me GGE.  You might think I'm just another moron, but hearing that really does hurt my heart and I feel your loss.  I'm glad there are not regrets, but... damn.  I'm sorry.  Really.

753 755 Look, when I said it was familiar in a musty dusty sort of way it just means I remember seeing it way back in 1990 when I went to AVI-C7 school (Navy advanced avionics tech school). Doesn't mean I remember any of it.

Yeah, well, I'm still the answer to a lot of people's problems (mostly two of my adult children that should be off on their own earning a pile of cash for my nursing home but NOOOO, here they are in my house, sucking up my air) so I had something to keep me occupied. Plus I have a 12 year old I have to get through school.
BUT, I swear by all that is holy when he graduates I'm shipping his ass off to the Marines, selling this house and buying an RV. I will NOT spend the rest of my life supporting children.

Pop is well into his 70s and lives in Florida, so he gets to have a lot of melanomas removed from his hide. Grand-daughter is 12, so yeah.  She's at that accident prone age.  Plus she has this condition where her bones grow faster than she does so she has to see the bone doc whenever she breaks one so that he can make sure it's healing straight.

I know... I know... I threw my daughter's ass out in January.  21 years old and dumber than a bag of hammers.  She's not even cute, so she can't get by on looks (she thinks different, I know better).  Lazy.  Self-centered.  If I'd have been like that my dad (golden gloves boxer, army, he'd be the first to tell you that) would have ended me.

I'm sure you'll do fine with your 12 year old.  You're not alone sir, not by a long stretch.

778 Yes a lot of the old movies do look damn good in Blu-Ray, especially those that you somehow never managed to see at the actual cinema.

For example get a copy of the Errol Flynn version of Robin Hood. The colors jump out at you and the forest scenes are breathtaking. The best thing about it? It is in the cheap stack (for Blu-Rays).

Another good candidate for the younger Morons, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I saw the original at the movies but that was in 1969. A lot of you young whippersnappers probably have only seen the TV version. It is also in the cheap stack.

780 The Errol Flynn Robin Hood was what motivated us to get a Blu-Ray player in the first place. It's startling.

Cool fact about that movie: the horse that Olivia DeHavilland rides in it was called Golden Cloud. After the movie, someone purchased him and renamed him Trigger. The Trigger.

F*ck Apple. Can't sleep, so I just downloaded their weekly pick "Night Circus," and not a single damn app will open the f*cker. I'm downloading a third one now. Adobe Digital Editions sees nothing but blank pages, and YES, I've "Added" it to my "Library."

800 I didn't watch any football yesterday. They were not showing my team because they started the year losing.

Plus I spent most of the afternoon working on the toilet. Now there's a story. You know how nothing goes right in these little projects.

Decided to replace the tank internals while I had everything disconnected because they were getting old and starting to cause problems. Damned if you can't get anything put short post fill valves for low volume toilets now.

Now my 30 year old toilet is low volume because the tank will not fill as much.
