Overnight Open Thread-Sonic Boom Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

What's up my fellow morons? We're halfway through the week so take a deep breath, get a cold one and dive right in to the ONT. Oh, and don't forget the dress code.

Thought I would start the ONT off with the Top 10 Most Incredible Snapshots Of Sonic Booms. Zombie Stuff

The above map is the result of asking Google Maps for the locations of zombies. What does it mean? Well, it looks like zombies prefer industrialized countries and big cities. Funny thing is, the word zombie originated in Africa and there were hardly any hits there.

Of course, CNN is all over How To Survive The Zombie Apocalypse (no, they aren't talking about Democrats but that would work!). Of course, item #1 that you need is this:

Price: $599.99 from Barnett Crossbows

Practical use: Zombie slaying

Pro: Reusable ammo

Con: It's not a gun

The only way to kill a zombie is to shoot it through the brain or burn it. Guns and flamethrowers are unavailable on Amazon, so you'll have to settle for a crossbow.

The Barnett Ghost 400 "is fully capable of taking down large game, small game, and yes, even zombies," said Barnett spokesman Major Person. "Head shots are a must for killing zombies and the Barnett is the most accurate crossbow on the market. Shoot to kill."

Now I'm sure a lot of you remember this outstanding video game trailer for Dead Island. Here it is again for those of you who forgot.

Well now it seems that Lionsgate wants to make a movie of it. If they make it like the actual game, it'll suck. I'm not even sure they could make a movie based on the trailer. You already know how it ends so obviously they'll have to change that and at that point, it's just another zombie movie. So should they make it an animated movie like the trailer or live action? I'm thinking animated. Then it would be different at least. Kind of like Heavy Metal.

Brand Name Condoms

Heh. New Condoms. The possibilities are endless.

Phoebe Cates JCPenny Commercial

I know many of you morons saw the Phoebe Cates commercial (what was the product again?) during some of the weekend football games and sure enough, it seems to be causing an uproar. JCPenny Goes For Broke With Remarkably Dumb, Sexist Ad. Oh please. The ad worked. You are talking about it and I'm sure a lot of people "remembered" it. Well at least the Phoebe Cates part. Maybe not the actual product.

Awesome Beer Commercial

Personal beer trainer? Hmmmm.

South Korean Study Habits

Don't see this being a problem here in the States. South Korea Cracking Down Hard On Students Who Study Too Hard.

On a wet Wednesday evening in Seoul, six government employees gather at the office to prepare for a late-night patrol. The mission is as simple as it is counterintuitive: to find children who are studying after 10 p.m. And stop them.

In South Korea, it has come to this. To reduce the country's addiction to private, after-hours tutoring academies (called hagwons), the authorities have begun enforcing a curfew — even paying citizens bounties to turn in violators.

The People Of Lowes?

Watch out Walmart. It looks like Lowes is coming after your title of worst dressed customers and employees. BTW, she's NOT naked in the picture. Those are leggings. I can't believe the manager or other employees didn't say something.

100 Of The Best F-Bombs In Film

NSFW due to the F-bombs and there are PLENTY of F-bombs. It truly is an art to say it right.

Snow White In Armor?

Um, Why Is Snow White Wearing Armor?

How'dja like Jerry Bruckheimer's King Arthur, with Keira Knightley as badass Guinevere shooting arrows and sword-fighting all over the place totally indistinguishable from a bunch of grubby leather-clad warriors? Is Techland following the example of Square Enix and spending all of their production money to make really awesome trailers, thereby leaving nothing to make a decent game?

I think so, have you ever played Left for Dead? It's like that, but not as much fun.

The concept is interesting. I had hoped it was going to be like a Resident Evil game on an Island, but it wasn't.

It's filled with glitches and the game play is inconsistent. The worst part is the zombies level up. So if you're at level one strength it may take 5 hits to kill a level one zombie. But if you get deep into the game and are level twenty five, it will take 5 hits to kill a level 25 zombie. So there is no point to leveling up as the zombies level up too.

Also, guns do almost no damage, they're essentially useless in the game.

And don't me started on the "historical" parts of it. If you're gonna try to make the legend seem real, maybe you should try reading a history book and memorizing some timelines!

Also up for consideration here: The new Robin Hood, with Russel Crowe and the medieval Higgins boats. The movie that made Prince of Thieves look accurate.

No, I've never played Left for Dead, although I think my little brother has it for Xbox (I think).

Also, guns do almost no damage, they're essentially useless in the game.

What the hell? Guns are staple in every zombie game, even Dead Rising (IIRC - that's another one I've only played briefly).

If by "historical" you only expect correctly identifying tribes, and the idea that Arthur might have been a Roman commander, and the existence of Hadrian's wall, then they got it spot on.

Of course, no one really knows if this Roman commander was the origin of the legend or not--it's a theory that happens to fit a few facts better than the other theories that have been floated in the past.

147 Y'okay, just re-adjusting the tinfoil here (hey, have you ever priced that shit? Not aluminum, but real tin--OMG!). I had "a little computer problem" that's getting very entertaining.

I find long technical discussions of proprietary software packages boring, don't you? Couple of weeks ago, every once in a while I'd try to send an e-mail and the system would stop it. You tend to ignore and work around the first few of these, but the restriction seems to be getting tighter. Today I got three bounced back, "Consult your service agreement." So this evening my IT manager and I had a longish talk with the local provider.

They've had the most awful rash of spam attacks lately, and lots of complaints--from valued customers!--about the need for better spam filtering, so they sub-contracted an Outside Firm in to nip it, nip it in the bud. The provider, you understand, has no input whatsover to the driving parameters of these new filters, and neither does the user. There's some sort of algorithm developed automatically, with no human involvement, based on the content of messages marked as spam by the recipients. That sounds rational, doesn't it.

And that is why you cannot send a message with the the words "president" and "communist" anywhere in it.They don't have to be in the same sentence, or otherwise grammatically linked. Just put those two on the page and you're done.

Nothing personal, you understand, and there's nothing we or you can do about it. Just how things are. No, we won't be raising this complaint to the next level. We're already responding to customer input. And if you have a need to send messages with that combination of words, please feel free to use one of our competitors. Our fees to you? No change. Anything else we can 'help' you with?

Now see, I'm old and suspicious and have a generally bad attitude, and that just looks like one too many coincidences to me. I'll bet lots of sharp young software experts here can explain how I'm not being censored, or nothin.

There may also be one or two who'd like to know the name of that provider, and what family owns it.

154 There was one video of a heavy set white male who walked out as the ocean receded and just stood there as the massive wave came it. that one has always stuck with me. I always wondered what was going through his head.

I remember that from the Indonesian tsunami. I'm guessing he was either in shock or realized that running would be futile.

They just explained that the reasons behind the destruction in the Japanese tsunami have never been recorded before. The did a simulation of a similar wave at only 2.3 meters high and the leading edge of the water created a force of 14 tons per sq meter. And, where as the usual tsunami waves are low and rolling while at sea, this wave rose into a peak of 20 meters instantly upon creation at sea and more than doubled at shore.

That's the thing. All the videos I had seen before were of the harbors flooding. But tonight they showed videos of open water waves coming in. I am just blown away.

Ugh, the happy daze of grad school. This fellow sufferer and I were sharing our fears, and voila! We weren't so much worried about the test as the nightmares we were going to have prior to the test.

I dreamed that I hadn't finished a big term paper. And don't me started on the "historical" parts of it. If you're gonna try to make the legend seem real, maybe you should try reading a history book and memorizing some timelines!

Posted by: Rum, High Functioning Sociopath at September 28, 2011 10:18 PM (YxBuk)

My favorite fiction author is Dumas. His novels were incredible in their scope, and for the fact that old ladies and teenage boys could read them. "The Three Musketeers" is about to be remade steampunk-style. I hate that the Arthurian legend is getting defiled, but when my main man is getting thrown on the pinball machine, yet again, eh. And meh.

Me neither, but I've seen several trailers of it on YouTube. I think it's coming out Spring 2012.

Here's one such trailer.

It looks fairly similar to Warcraft 3, where you have a "Hero" unit (kerrigan) who complements your other units throughout the whole game. It is interesting, I'll admit.

It's almost exactly Starcraft 1 with new cut scenes. I was underwhelmed.

Cats do that too. You know how some older women get more eccentric and independent, then others go all weird and dependent and homebody? Cats do the same thing. Sounds like she lives out in the sticks and got more independent and a taste for the hunt. dometic cats decide to stay kittens and let you be the mommy. 532 I try very hard not to be a hoarder. four of the horses are long term boarders here for vet care. I used to breed horses for a living and sold off half my stock and killed the older horses. SO people who keep them for fun and people who do it for a business are two different things. I got an old one im shooting when it starts to get cold.

As for the cats... of my neighbor's barn cats had kittens in my hay barn, and i am too tender hearted to shoot them, so guess what? i tamed the damn feral things. Still cant believe that. They come when i call em too. crazily i was bitten by a tame cat. NOT one of the wild ones.

Great vet team. They knew what to do right away and got him on IV fluids and antibiotics right away. He needed a transfusion (which, as an aside, led to the 1 time I laughed today when the wife said: "what, they have a dog blood bank? They pay them like 2 biscuits a pint?") but I went to see him today and he was ready to come home (in his mind) and was all licky/barky/happy

so... that little voice? the one that we never pay attention to? it's telling me it is what it is, we did all we could, and that's it. Nothing left to do but wait.

The harley shop I work out of occasionally had 3 stray cats that used to come around. One was a kitten. The owner started leaving food out at night when we closed up, so they used to show up before closing on schedule looking for the food. The winter was coming do the owner caught the kitten and brought it inside and put it in a big cage. A day or so later we opened the cage and let him walk around the shop at night to find his own place. He started sleeping on a way high shelf, so we stuck a cat bed up there and he started using it, and would come down to his cage for his food, but didn't come near us. We also hung a few cat toys around the shop that he started playing with. A few days later the shop dog comes in, she is a dutch shepherd, very nice dog, very friendly. The cat comes down and walks right up to it, and from that moment on they were best buddies. Its a rural area, so from that point on the dog and kitten would walk around the property exploring, and the dog was its protector. The cat kitten would sleep in between the dog's paws as the dog sat like the sphinx. The cat went to the vet and got all it's shots, and eventually the shop owner took it home and now its a house cat. Meanwhile a year later the other 2 adult cats are getting used to people and sit near the open bay doors now when diner time comes. They used to stay far away.

the first kiten was abandoned out back same time i was nursing ellie and sleeping outside. So she saw me as just another denizen of the warm safe barn. She was lonely as well as hungry and i talked to her. then i payed with her from a distance with the tip of a long whip then a shorter whip.

they learn fast that where i am is light and safety and good food. the coyotes dont come near when i am out and i have a stick that goes POP! and makes them go away.

tonight i was in the black mare's (that colicked a few weeks ago) stall she was feeling crappy and yes... i was hand feeding her a wet mash with probiotic and electrolyte, after walking her. we were having a chat while i was waiting for her to poop or fart, since she was acting crampy again, and guess who climbs in with us...? Spec, and then his sister Emmie. yapping and chatting it up with the black mare while i hand fed her. shed stick her nose into my hand and take a bite then chew and look like she was listening to the cats.

i swear this is the very best life of all, at least for me.

584 577 I have a Stolen Valor issue. I was an Air Force MTI for some years some years ago. I trained a guy who claimed to have gone through Ranger school. I need to verify. He's marching about with a ranger tab that it appears he didn't earn.

You don't seem to believe him. Has he given any other specifics about his time in the Army?

No, no connection at Benning.

BTW, I believe it is Infantry Training Brigade (yes, I was the recipient of their tender affections for 13 weeks), but the Ranger School has a cadre.

Posted by: GGE's ungrateful cat at September 29, 2011 01:44 AM (4Kl5M)

He wasn't in the Army. Years ago Strategic Air Command (yes, I'm that old) would get a few slots every year for our security forces guys. I don't believe him because it appears that when he left Lackland, his incoming cop commander did exactly what I'm trying to do: verify. He then was NOT a cop (overnight, as these things go), and relegated to some family councilor or some crap job.

However, and why I'm asking, is he maintains to this day he was a ranger. You may not think highly of the air force, but within our community, we MTI's are rabid about integrity, and this guy stinks.

tango. i must tell you everything i know about the military i learned as a dependent. My dad is an AF bird Col. I have dated real deal guys. Admission: i have always been uninterested in deatails of what they were or what they did. Didnt wanna know. All i cared about were horses. I was raised by someone outside the family, and he was a Marine who didnt talk about what he did either, much. He taught me horses. people who talk prolly never did it. this is AXIOMATIC.

Now in my humbly considered and uneducated opinion... its seems if he was an AF guy he would have been a snakeater like a Raven or a Combat Weatherman or Flight Controller or Pararescue. Maybe FAST team or .... sigh. they can work with rangers and train alongside sometimes....but.... they are not rangers. wouldnt call themselves that.

do you see what i am trying to say? why would he say RANGER? and not back it up or have ranger friends ort at least ranger people he worked with and didnt like, who remember him, can back up his story?

doesnt make sense. i think hes a nut.

597 Grrr. That is not a sonic boom. That is a Prandtl-Glauert singularity. You can get this in subsonic flight. It's when the stagnation pressure falls below the dew point. I've seen pictures of PG singularities off a B-2 Spirit, and those things do not go supersonic. The series of photos eventually gets round to mentioning this, but too late.

602 At SOBC (Sig Officer Basic Course) - 6 mos at Ft. Gordon (a great time), I was accused by a classmate of cheating on the final 2 mile run. Ironically, I was on profile for bursitis in my knees, and had not really run much at all until a few weeks before (but I did an Army shitton of biking and weightlifting), so when he said that we finished at the same time so I couldn't have made it in 12:34 (12:36 being 100 pts for my age group) because he came in at 14:00 or so, I thought about it for a moment -- and everyone who at that point who was eligible for the max, meaning the two of us, was watched on the run like a hawk, and I had run close to 12 even a few months earlier -- and it dawned on me: I lapped him. The cadre member watching me backed me up and I won highest score in my class -- 322.

I don't make shit up so I never have to worry about being called on it.

Tammy, I love my woman. But the girl couldn't boil water. I had a checklist: 1) likes football. 1.a) is a Steeler fan 2) Smart 3) Hot! (1-3 are interchangeable at my discretion) 4) Has a job 5) can cook.

My wife got an "A" in 1-4 and a freaking omg-drop-the-class "F" in 5.

I'm freakin' starvin' here! Only guy I know in my age group who's LOST weight not trying. Everyone else is all bbq'd up, runnin' around with love handles like whoa... but not me. I'm the Etheopian kid commercial at the fantasy football draft... all my boys are like "dude... you want a sammwich?"

674 tangonine - the RI at Darby, Eglin, and Williams are going to be hard to find, as they arent organic to the base. It wouldnt surprise me if they didnt keep any records. Start at Benning - the RTB. The non-army guys would likely only have records there. Alternatively, you could go thru USAF personnel (McChord?) and ask for a master list of guys chopped over for training.

675 I am a tad out of practice making biscuits, which is probably for the best, since y'all would be reduced to worshipping at my feet I'd I was at the top of my biscuit making game. Not a typical pie crust, though. I can't make pie.

oh totally. could NOT agree more.

and i like to make yummy food, eat all KINDS of good things, and a skinny dude usually has a bunch of dumb food rules. Grimmy is a nice medium type hes fit and strong but will eat cake if i make it and be glad i have brownies and isnt too good for red meat. OTOH... he likes fruit and veggies and that suits me too. But his stomach cant handle onions AT ALL. we call them the dreaded onions. but thats pretty simple. really.

my sisters ex was a skinny bitch who not only dieted all the time but made her diet too!

AUGH!!!!

i knew Grim was cool when i asked him how he wanted me to look (I was passing up ice cream) and he said "HAPPY, WOMAN! now eat the dam ice cream, that i know you want."

so i did. and he was right. i had really wanted that ice cream. A lot.

697 Who immigrates into Russia to start life anew?

Microsoft in Russia

"The project event April 15th in St Petersburg tells a wonderful story of how technology can enhance the everyday lives of those who need it the most, immigrants and refugees trying to establish a foothold in society after economic and social displacement or upheaval," said the FBC document. "The UNHCR-Red Cross initiative is a perfect example of public-private partnership, which often goes unnoticed within the daily news flow of any given day." FBC promised "to provide a 'daily news hook' to what in essence is a rich feature story linked to one of the most pressing issues today: how to help those in need make a fresh start. We believe this story, enhanced by similar project partnerships by Microsoft in the region, can be of particular interest." It offered Microsoft "guaranteed" coverage of the St Petersburg event on Tech Watch, a monthly technology programme it produced for airlines to show as part of their in-flight entertainment.

Imagine that. Does that mean the Red Cross endorses TSA? After the lurid massage by TSA agents, your friendly skies programming propaganda awaits in flight.
