Overnight Open Thread-The Short Straw Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Yup. I drew the short straw and I got the ONT tonight. Or is it that you guys get the short end of the stick? Whatever. Drink up. It's time for the ONT!

Now let's get this party started with some music. Here is Luka Sulic and Stjepan Hauser playing their arrangement of Welcome To The Jungle by Guns N' Roses. They got some flair too.

Beware this group of people called Bronies. It seems that there is a growing group of adults that are totally into My Little Pony. Wow.

Each day, out-of-work computer programmer Luke Allen self-medicates by watching animated ponies have magical adventures.

The 32-year-old, who lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico, loves his daily fix of My Little Pony Friendship Is Magic, and he’s not alone. He’s part of a growing group of “bronies” (“bro ponies”) — men who are fans of a TV show largely intended for a much younger audience.

“First we can’t believe this show is so good, then we can’t believe we’ve become fans for life, then we can’t believe we’re walking down the pink aisle at Toys R Us or asking for the girl’s toy in our Happy Meal,” Allen said in an e-mail to Wired.com. “Then we can’t believe our friends haven’t seen it yet, then we can’t believe they’re becoming bronies too.”

This video is timely in light of the whole Wiener saga thingee. A new opera in London called Two Boys put together this video and highlights our weird behavior from your everyday facebook/twitter/myspace/??? world and bring it into the real world.

How about a little Emo Kitty since it is Caturday.

I'm sure Congressman Weiner wishes he had heard of this extension for Chrome. Save Yourself from Weiner-Caliber Online Embarrassment with Internet Shame Insurance. Too funny.

Lifehacker also asked a great question in this article, How Long Can A Hard Drive Hold Data Without Power. Hope to see a follow on how long CDs/DVDs/Blu-Rays can realistically last.

A little montage of 250 Introductions of People, Groups and Things. Makes we want to break out the movie collection and watch some of these!

Alright 'ettes, since I'm a giver, here are your The Hottest Conservative Men. I'm sure I'll be on the list this year.

Crap. When the TSA see's this, they won't let us fly with luggage. Just as well since Delta charges an arm and a leg to bring your bags. Cheaper to just buy clothes at your destination. Pretty clever idea by these thieves. One question though. Why the hell were they using a 6 ft dude in the suitcase instead of, like, you know, an ewok or something?

Music contest. Which version of Land of Confusion do you like? Genesis or Disturbed.

This is the Ginger of the Week. Meet Esme Bianco from Game of Thrones. If you've seen the show, hmmm, hmmm.

Remember, in Soviet Russia, kitteh pet you.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by:

I hate them both.  Genesis is a screed against Reagan.  Disturbed covered on their album as an attack on Bush, and the rest of that album is a pathetic piece of pussy hatred against our soldiers.

17 Rangel is on NY1 explaining why Weiner shouldn't resign. One claim he's making is that the calls for resignation are coming from Democrats who aren't safe in their House seats like Rangel is, so they have to pretend they're offended by Weiner to hang on in the next election.

19 There is no media bias, 2008 version:

(Washington, DC) – Judicial Watch, the public interest group that forced the release of Hillary Clinton’s daily White House schedule on March 20, announced today that the preliminary results of an investigation into Senator Barack Obama’s record as an Illinois State Senator show that his statements about the maintenance of his files are suspect. Judicial Watch’s investigation included the filing of a Freedom of Information Act request with the Illinois State Archives to obtain his records and papers...

During a campaign stop last fall, Obama at first claimed he did not have any records of his eight years in the Illinois state legislature. “I don't have — I don't maintain — a file of eight years of work in the state Senate because I didn't have the resources available to maintain those kinds of records.”

91 The portrayal of Reagan in that Genesis video was condescending & negative, but he was shown to be fundamentally kind-hearted and idealistic (if senile).  There was an acknowledgment of the tragic sense in it, of good intentions paving the way to hell.  I've never seen the new band's version before, but the fragments in that mashup were vile, and basically fascistic.  I mock one of my "independent" friends for his incredibly archaic image of Republicans as fat-cat industrialists in silk top-hats lighting their cigars with the foreclosed mortgages of widowed old ladies, but that video puts his imaginings to shame.

I kick him out in the am. I am overnight in Richmond picking up a couple of Morons® who fly in here at 11am. 1 hour drive to Williamsburg and the deed is done. I am such a wuss.. I gave him (tenent) a heads up I am coming.

It's on just under a half acre. I'm trying to tell myself I will not hate the yard, but it's quite the mow. That one's kitchen has issues, but the rest of the house I pretty much love. Easy commute to work. Solid Conservative area (stable taxes). Two of the other Four solids within a few blocks of each other and are basically the same place. One is 4 years newer. The older is bank-owned and has the nicer kitchen. The newer one will be a short sale, but they are asking for less than the bank owned one is. They both have double the commute than the first one. Sigh.

190 Jay Nordlinger's column having fun w/ Puritan names

One sample: Near Greensboro, Vt., there was a monument to two colonial-era residents, “killed by Indians and buried where they fell.” One was Constant Bliss. The other was Moses Sleeper. This was when I was a child — don’t know whether the monument is still there. But I remember thinking that “Constant Sleeper” would have been a great name.

I am officially a footnote to history for talking about this subject (specifically, how to ensure that your digital data survives as technology changes) back in the mid-1990s.  I wrote a piece for the Wall Street Journal's Manager's Journal editorial feature called "Why Johnny Can't Read His Data," and it was cited in a report on data preservation issued by the Commission on Preservation and Access and the Research Libraries Group.

Yeah, someone told me the thin stick 10 year old boy body look that you see a lot of celebrities and models sporting is on account of gay fashion designers repulsed at the female form.

It's because it takes your focus to the clothes rather than the cleavage, the hourglass, the cellulite, whatever. Models are hangers.

241 People hear "My Little Pony" and what comes to mind is the old cartoon series from the 80s. The internet fandom that popped up around it last October is almost solely revolving around the new series, which apparently is the first in the franchise to actually have multidimensional characterization and give episodes decent writing and humor. The stated intent of the producers was to make a show that parents could watch alongside their kids and enjoy too. Unintended consequences means they made a show that appealed to teens and single college-aged viewers as well.

Not sure if it's irony, "internet neo-sincerity", or some mix of both, but that fandom's been going strong for several months now.

Okay, I fully recant the diss against the "bronies."  I see from the My Little Pony link that Lauren Faust, who worked on The Powerpuff Girls, is the showrunner for the new My Little Pony.  If its DNA includes that majorly awesome show, then there must be something to this "bronies" phenomenon that is not totally eunuchified.

Any interest in the Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray?  If you're afraid of heights it might not be a good choice.  Otherwise, I remember it as being very beautiful, and I wasn't driving so I have no idea how difficult it is.  I wouldn't reccomend the Silverton-Durango narrowgauge railroad though.  It's a lot cooler in theory than practice and quite expensive.

It's a knockout.  Last time I was on it was 1995 when WDOT was still paving the road over Dead Indian Pass.  The view from the top, especially to the south and southwest is knock-your-socks off beautiful.  And to top it off, some of the  onstruction workers in one of the WDOT suburbans had glued fins to the PVC tubes on the top of their vehicle to make them look like Sidewinder missiles, so there was a bit of humor in the wilderness, too.  We turned on the east side away from Cody and went on up towards Red Lodge and Absaroka instead.

Posted by: stuiec at June 11, 2011 11:28 PM (HMdeP)

Yeah, and she's married to the guy who created Powerpuff Girls. I also recalled seeing a quote from her some months back about how, when she was given the Pony job, she wanted to shake things up.

"I was extremely skeptical at first about taking the job. Shows based on girls' toys always left a bad taste in my mouth, even when I was a child. They did not reflect the way I played with my toys. I assigned my ponies and my Strawberry Shortcake dolls distinctive personalities and sent them on epic adventures to save the world. On TV, though, I couldn't tell one girl character from another and they just had endless tea parties, giggled over nothing and defeated villains by either sharing with them or crying–which miraculously inspired the villain to turn nice. Even to my 7-year-old self, these shows made no sense and couldn't keep my interest. No wonder the boys at school laughed at my Rainbow Unicorn Trapper Keeper.

"From what I've seen since I've grown up, little has changed. To look at the quality of most girls' cartoons, it would seem that not one artist really cared about them. Not one designer, not one background painter, not one animator. Some of the more well-meaning, more expensive animated productions for girl audiences may look better, but the female characters have been so homogenized with old-fashioned “niceness” that they have no flaws and are unrelatable. They are so pretty, polite and perfect; there is no legitimate conflict and nothing exciting ever happens. In short, animated shows for little girls come across as boring. Stupid. Lame.

"This perception, more than anything, is what I am trying to change with My Little Pony."

And if there are enough "bronies" now that Hasbro is marketing to them and not just the kids, I guess she did something right. Granted, you got the usual "single guy in the basement watching cartoons" demographic, but that demographic's always been around, for every cartoon, and isn't quite big enough to account for the level of attention this has gotten lately.

Posted by: Polliwog at June 11, 2011 07:46 PM (sbpVX)

317 Ok, I'm dense but what the hell is a reactionary?

A "reactionary" is that part of the Right which forms the Left's caricature of all those who align themselves to the Right. Ace and I'd estimate over half the "morons" here are right-libertarians. RS McCain is conservative, as is the Blogmocracy. And then... there's those who just say "fuck it".

Lawrence Auster is I think the Internet's best reactionary; there was also Mencius Moldbug but he mostly said what he needed to say. Thinking Housewife is another. Foseti. There's others out there. Ace used to have a commenter by the nic "Reactionary" - not sure if he's returned during that month or two I bailed on conservative sites.

Reactionaries are united around democracy-skepticism. They don't concern ourselves overmuch with who will win an election. Moldbug worried more about who will win power; a bit like the Left does. Auster and the Housewife are more into crying out in the wilderness.

There are splits in the reactionary-sphere: over Jews (I'm pro-Judaism as are Auster and Moldbug; but then there's Mangan and alt-right); and over religion (Auster is against "Darwinism" and, well...). I tolerate the religious reactionaries; I will always consider antiSemitic reactionaries to be scum.

In total, I prefer reactionaries to conservatives and libertarians; but the reactionaries need to clean up their house. I'm not exactly sure how they can do that though.

A BBC documentary mentioned yesterday that 1/3 rd of South Korean females over 30 aren't married yet. I'm already going but that was a nice stat to know.

Yeah, I was over there a few years ago and some of the university students there told me how unusual it seemed for my sister to marry in her early 20s. They consider late 20s, early 30s to be a more standard marriage age.

But then I also hear stories about how next door in Japan if you're a woman over 25 and unmarried then you're cutting it really really late.

So they're like American women in S. Korea.

427 The Rs have some great ideas but most of them are still lousy at communication.

Posted by: Miss'80sBaby at June 12, 2011 01:37 AM (ITYRW)

That's actually only half true. Yes, there are some dumb examples, but also clever ones. The problem is, the medium is run by the opposition. So you're not really going to see that cleverness much on TV, or even through ad agencies, which are often sources of sabotage.

Communication *is* our weakness, it's just not all laid at the feet of the R's.

That being said, they have just not yet decided to give the finger to the MBM and go *entirely* around, do our *own* ads, do our *own* internet work, make dedicated ad agencies, rip the magic carpet out from under the MBM and the "communication industry", which is not far from the MBM, ideologically, IMO.

And make it part of the campaign when the MBM won't run ads unedited.

And the GOP is reluctant to do that, to say the least.

429 Not really. Ace made a point (several times) of where the mines were. People who stepped on 'em were either not paying attention or being obtuse.

No, "obtuse" is devoting your blog to a story about somebody's cock for several weeks at a time, and then losing your fucking shit one day when the half of your readership that actually gives a damn about said story does nothing more than comment on the very subject you created your latest thread about.

Actually, wait.  That's something else.

^ This is what I'm referencing when I talk about communication weaknesses. They're great at pressers, editorials and interviews, Facebook updates, websites, and other such mediums, but they really need to be churning out more ads. They need to share their research in a way that can be seen by a larger audience.

483 Going through the last Weiner thread...it's pretty funny.  Not laugh out loud funny, just funny that if Ace didn't want people to bring up a subject involving a minor why bring up the subject at all?  Or if just in passing, as a follow up since he's been all up Weiner's wiener, close the comments.  I mean it's like discussing a movie without being able to discuss who was in it.  I don't think it's really reasonable to expect people to talk about an issue without discussing certain key players.  Ace was just giving himself problems.

It wasn't even trollbaiting.  It was just stupid.

493 Good Morning Morons

How long can data last on a hard drive without power? I don't think it makes much difference whether it has power or not. The data is nothing more than a magnetic spot on the disk. Eventually it will lose its magnetism unless it is rewritten periodically.

CDs and DVDs though not so. A music CD or data CD/DVD professionally made is a series of etched pits in an aluminum foil disk coated with plastic. As long as the disk isn't physically damaged it should last virtually forever. Home burnt disks though are not etched. They use a laser to burn a different color into a material beneath the plastic. I have some disks that still are working great after 10 or 15 years.

That being said, the government only allows you to count them for 5 years for the purposes of required record storage. (Nuke Plants are required to keep a host of records for the "life of the plant" plus 10 years)

499 The color-change method, if I recall correctly, is used only on CD-R and DVD-R. The -RWs work in a way that I don't really understand beyond the fact that the material used reacts to light somehow, and the reaction is reversible so that it can be overwritten. It's been a long time since I learned all that information. I also remember some conjecture that -RWs may prove to be more stable than -Rs.

It's funny. When I got my first CD burner, I couldn't imagine anything ever replacing it. I used it to dub 78s and LPs for transfer to the digital domain for restoration. Now, I use a digital recorder at 96 KHz/24 bits, and am annoyed at having to downsample my tracks to put them on a CD for giving to others.

504 On the contrary, I am complex analog signals and still fairly reproduce the music I was given.  Digital is merely a series of  yes or no, with error correction algorithms built in.  I have heard from some newer magnetic media that data retention is in excess of 100 years, though the proof is yet to be in the pudding.

507 I had some old real-to-real tapes a while back that I had noticed severe degradation on. That was at 7.5 ips whereas 8-track moved at 3.75 ips. The music would start to sound "muddy" as the tape deteriorated.

511 I remember when I would have killed to have a reel-to-reel deck. The fidelity was far superior to anything else at the time. But unless it is stored correctly, tape degrades badly over time. Restorers often have to bake it carefully before transferring it to keep the oxide from coming off as it plays.

512 I just needed my my birthday slightly adjusted for my ID.

Okay, fair enough. You know, my brother actually had a Muntz 4-track player, speaking of obsolete technologies. Same setup, but only two stereo programs instead of four. Those didn't last too long.

513 OK back. One other thing I thought of while sorting through Plavix and Lipitor was my old cassette collection, particularly the "store bought" music that I got while in the Navy for listening to on a deck in my bunk locker. Those old music tapes were not real good fidelity to begin with. When I finished digitizing all my old albums I tried doing a few of those old tapes.

They were over 30 years old and sounded so bad I gave up after the first one. They were so bad it just wasn't worth the effort even though a few of them were things that were out of print and no longer available.

Since he refuses to resign they are going to go with it and say he is "sick".

517 Vic, yeah. Until the later years of production, pre-recorded cassettes sounded uniformly bad, plagued by low levels and high hiss because they were duped at high speed with cheap tape in crummy shells.

But in its prime, the cassette was an astoundingly good-sounding medium, considering its natural limitations of slow speed, narrow tape and captive tape path. I usually rolled my own, and always used either Maxell or TDK. Typically, the tapes I recorded in the Eighties and early Nineties still sound good enough to make them worthwhile to dub if I don't have another source for the material.

Towards the end of the run, sadly, the quality of even Maxell and TDK blank tapes took a nosedive; tapes I made in this era are often unusable now because of phasing problems, especially at the beginning and end of the side. And the irony of it is that by that time I was finally well-heeled enough to get a really good deck.

518 We can't help it.  We get run through a wringer every time you want us to perform.  You just wear us out.  This tape playing thing is a brutal contact sport.  You are just lucky we do as well as we do.   I mean our high end frequency response is so bad to begin with we have to be electronically compensated.

Hard drives with their own built in no contact read/write heads got it easy, no being dragged out of their housing and mangled in some mechanical torture device.  They don't have to deal with dirty workings and misaligned read/write heads.  Don't even get me started on sitting in a car glove box in winter and summer!!

Vic - that's all the rage now - you're not deviant - you're sick - and you can't be fired for a medical/psychiatric/made up illness.

You go on stress leave, go to "rehab" - ie country club of your choice, and come back bigger and famous-er and perhaps if you're lucky you'll get a show on CNN.

Yes, I'm looking at you dillhole Spitzer

521 The cassettes I recorded myself were done on high quality metal tape and still sounded "fair". I didn't need to digitize them though because they were cut from albums that I still had.

522 Jeebers.   I don't even know what to say about those pics of teh weiner on TMZ.    That is one narcissitic jerk, and he has nothing to think so highly of himself for.

524 Well, I have completed the Rick Santorum eval and will post it when we get a new open thread this morning. Gonna go start a pot of spaghetti sauce in the slow cooker now.

525 Well, I'm just grateful that we no longer have to depend upon magnetic tape. I'm aware of the potential longevity problems in digital storage, but I take care of it with super-redundancy for everything important.

As far as longevity goes, however, the most stable medium I've found is the coarse-grooved shellac disc. I have records dating back to 1900, and they still play clearly. As long as they are kept from moisture, heat and physical damage, they hold up better than anything else.

527 Otis, just think how good those reel-to-reel tapes would have sounded if they had gone to the exotic metal formulations that cassettes had gone to before they became obsolete.

The best that reel-to-reel got was when they went to 15 ips with those 10" reels. But by then reel-to-reel was on the way out.

529 New threads up.

Posted by: Vic at June 12, 2011 04:15 AM (M9Ie6)

530 I left the thread after posting "first" and it disappeared.  I refreshed twice, and it never came back.

Did not feel welcomed here, and since that wasn't the first time PLUS all the banning going on, I skipped the ONT.

Now, I see this morning, it's still there.  So I read and read and read, all the way through until Vic says new thread.

Did I get the last, too?

I know, I know:  it's not a bug, it's a feature.

Love you, Ace!

534 I think those 2CELLOS guys should do a rendition of Sammy Haggar's "There's Only One Way To Rock." The irony angle would make that truly awesome.
