Ah yes, it's Friday! So much Doom! this week that it's only fitting to start off the ONT talking about, well, a bomb that will bring Doom! to our enemies. The above pic is one of the MOP (Massive Ordnance Penetrator). Here's the latest on where we are at with this 30,000 pound harbinger of kinetic action.
Unlike the MOAB, however, this project’s goal is a GPS-guided, penetrating weapon that can be carried aboard B-52 Stratofortress or B-2 Spirit bombers to defeat “a specialized set of hard and deeply buried targets” like bunkers and tunnel facilities. Some graphics show expectations of over 60 feet of concrete destroyed, and a USAF article stated that the bomb was meant to penetrate 200 feet underground before exploding.
So while Iran makes empty threats (for now), Uncle Sam has got a little present in the works for you baby. Say hallow to my lil' fruend!

This has got to be right up runningrn's alley. I'm so tempted. A Zombie Infested 5K Obstacle Course Race. One thing is bothering me though after watching the video. When the hell could zombies friggin' run? Here's the the deal:
Protect your brain and run for your life. This is one race where your legs giving out are the least of your problems. Run For Your Lives is a first-of-its-kind event, one part 5K, one part obstacle course, one part escaping the clutches of zombies — and all parts awesome.Runners will navigate a series of 12 obstacles throughout a 5K course in an attempt to reach the finish line — all while avoiding zombies. At the end of this adventure race, you get to celebrate survival (or zombie transformation) with live entertainment and music, local celebrities, vendors, food, and of course, beer!
Dieting Forces Brain To Eat Itself?
Well, that's what some UK scientists are saying. So starving yourself makes you hungrier? Wow, who would've thought that?
Like other parts of the body, brain cells begin to eat themselves as a last-ditch source of energy to ward off starvation, a study found. The body responds by producing fatty acids, which turn up the hunger signal in the brain and increase our impulse to eat.
This Is Your Brain, Aroused
So does this research like point the way to the fabled g-spot? What does it mean?!

Lead researcher Barry R. Komisaruk told New Scientist that for an unspecified number of women, nipple stimulation led to genital activation. "When I tell my male neuroscientist colleagues about this, they say: 'Wow, that's an exception to the classical homunculus. But when I tell the women they say: 'Well, yeah?'"

Clothing and Thermal Insulation
Well, it is the ONT and I'm sure most of you are wearing the appropriate level of clothes (which is supposed to be not much), but if you aren't and you are feeling hot, well this chart breaks down how various garments insulate heat for ya. So if you are feeling a bit warm right now, well, you are overdressed for the festivities. Kindly disrobe and get comfortable. And grab a cold one.

15 Incredible Escape Tools Made By Prison Inmates
Take notes my friends. This could come in handy when we are rounded up and put into the camps.
This was more than just ingenious; it worked as well! A shotgun made of iron bedposts. The charge came from lead in curtain tape and was set off by AA batteries. Prisoners took a hostage, fired at a pane of glass and broke out into a waiting car on May 21, 1984.
Guess The 'Ette!
Well, tonight we have a new game to play. It's called guess the 'ette! I'd give a clue about her nic but then it would give away who she is. Be nice. CC or Circa can probably guess who it is. Let's just say she promised on a previous ONT a "booby prize" and is coming through on that promise.

Tonight's ONT brought to you by:

The fed issued a statement saying T bills were still AAA and so did S&P if you read down the report. S&P actually said everything we issue is still AAA so their rating was pretty much political.
I just heard the S&P guy on bloomberg and he said the overriding reason was the pissing match it took to come up with the deal and then the deal wasn't sufficient. Didn't address entitlements or taxes.

The real reason is that it allows for a lower delivery altitude. The delivering aircraft can zorch across the treetops, deliver the bomb and be away before it goes off. Bomber pilots appreciate anything that allows them to get away from the blast of their own ordnance.

I am not sure of that. The guys on Bloomberg didn't think it was such a big deal right now and that the market already priced it. Even Dr. Doom Rubini was that concerned about near term. Indeed. Wall Street, like a women's hair salon, it isn't exactly good at keeping secrets.
You think it was just some random chance that the market fell 512 points the day before the downgrade came? Do you think S&P wrote that entire write up today?
No, they've been working on it for a while. Something like that takes time and Wall Street people have insiders or "friends" in all the rating agencies. They knew it was coming and that's why there was a massive sell off on thursday.

Doing math doesn't make me unpatriotic. Since the 70s, we've piled on debt in a manner that resulted in the majority leader of the Senate to describe raising the debt ceiling as "routine." We won't stay awesome if we aren't truthful about where we are.

It may have to do with some tropes which were pretty common in cowboy movies but are now considered right-wing.
The preacher character was decent. The Indians were savages. The gun was celebrated.
Etc.

Isn't that the whole issue with governments, though? Unless you're actually convicted of a crime, there is zero accountability or consequences for the people who screw these things up. They're comped for life-- pension, healthcare, etc., enabling them to walk away whistling from decisions that leave other people broke. With no negative feedback for being wrong... Who cares?

SYDNEY--Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard on Saturday sought to shore up confidence in the countryÂ’s economy by highlighting a huge pipeline of expected private investment, and said Standard & PoorÂ’s move to cut the U.S. rating to AA+ had been well-flagged.
“Standard and Poor’s had been signalling for some time that unless they saw a certain figure of budget cutbacks out of the discussion that there’s been in Washington about the American budget and fiscal consolidation, that they were intending to do that downgrade,” she told reporters in Melbourne.

I'm waiting to board the flight to Orlando, and I'm noticing that all of the frequent flyers have been upgraded, and they still have one last first class seat left. So they are offering to sell it for $50 for anyone who wants it.
This Army private walks up to the counter to get a seat assignment, heading home. The guy behind the counter does a few things, and I notice that the number of available first class seats is now 0. Sure enough, the kid turns his head with a big smile on his face, the ticket agent gave him that last seat.
Anyway, Delta sends me these coupons every year to give to employees that give outstanding service. They are really a cool perk for the employees when they get them. So I walk over to the counter and I tell the agent, "I saw what you did there". He has a big shit eating grin and says "I thought I was being sly". I said, "you were good, but I fly enough to notice what is going on". Then I handed him the coupon and told him, "great job".

From the beginning.
It's my favorite version, followed by the '06 one. The adaption is close to the book and both leads are excellent. I will say that you can tell the BBC made it in the early 80s and that Dalton's Welsh lilt comes through sometimes, but the story is so engrossing that you rarely notice.

I had a Walther PPK-S (.380) that I loved for a while. I was doing scenario-based shooting at an IDPA gathering and the slide ripped part of my thumb. I was cupping my hand to catch the blood and feeling horribly embarrassed because I was the only woman there and ended up injuring myself with my gun. A while later (properly bandaged), I managed to shoot the paper plate-headed bad guy while one of our local HPD officers shot the hostage...
A few weeks later, at a time when I thought I needed my gun, it jammed. There's a part in it that looks like a rifle (I don't know what it's called) and it had broken. Walther fixed it for no charge but I lost confidence in the gun. I have a Sig P226 (9mm) now and I love it with the passion fire of a thousand blazing suns. I want a P228 because of the lower profile and easier purse carry but I am not buying from a shop. I need to find a non-shop-owner who wants to sell.

My favorite beer of all times is a very dark lager called Blackened Voodoo. It's made by Dixie Brewery out of New Orleans. It's hard to find around here but is fantastic. There's none of the harsh bitterness that some dark beers have. It's just rich and caramel-y and delicious.

I loved the IDPA gatherings. The only problem was that they met on the same night that I played pool. Years ago, I managed to finish in 2nd place in the American Poolplayers Association regionals. 1st place would have put me playing on ESPN2 at 3 in the morning for a national title. 2nd place won me a little cash and a good story. Unfortunately, work obligations meant that I had to give up shooting pool and shooting guns on weeknights. I never knew when I'd need to stay late. One of these days, I'm going to win the lottery. I see adult beverages and naps in my future...

Can I get an AMEN in the house of the Wookeh?!?!?!
Posted by: Robert at August 05, 2011 09:08 PM (4ixH5)
I had three main criteria when I bought my house ten years ago. Good school district for my kids (they were in high school at the time), a fenced yard for my dog, and at least one room large enough for my pool table. These days, the pool table is mostly a rather expensive laundry folding table, the kids are grown (with one providing grandgirls), and the dog would stay in the yard even if I didn't have a fence.
My plan two years ago was to sell the house and move into the almost historical district in the city. Now? Rural/county is/will be safer. I'll hang here and grow my veggies, save my ammo, and hope/plan for the best. Failing that, my brother has a self-sustaining farm in TN. I keep enough gas in the truck to get there.
Sorry to re-introduce economic gloom to the ONT.

I was planning on using my G-36 but I don't know if 7 rd mags are a good idea when everyone else will have 10 rd mags. A friend of mine has a G21 in .45 that he's willing to let me borrow, so I'll probably do that instead.
Posted by: GGE of the Moron TEAhad at August 06, 2011 01:02 AM (f4gk9)
IDPA sorts everyone out by gun type. With a G36 you can shoot CDP and compeet against others shooting .45ACP with 7 or 8 round magazines
The peeps shooting 10 round mags shoot against each other.
IDPA had 3 gun categories(with max mag capacity)
SSP-10
ESP-10
CDP-8

I'm hearing good things about them. I have all the bases covered, but I'll be taking a G21 instead of my G36, they want you to start with 50 rounds and to do that with the 36 I'd have to have seven mags with +1 extensions, with the G21 I only need 5 mags with 10 rounds each in them.

The 2012 elections will be upon us sooner than we can imagine. With this in mind, I would like to remind our side of the vital importance of avoiding the pitfalls of racism and bigotry that are the unfortunate legacy of our conservative ideolological inheritance.
Reagan's scapegoating of "welfare queens" along with Bush's failure to allieviate the suffering of Hurricane Katrina have left us in a deep hole with the African American community. And rightfully so.
We will only win in 2012 with inclusiveness, not intolerance.

I don't know where you are but some ranges have a "wall of guns". For the price of a box of ammo, you can shoot whatever they have. Before I bought my first handgun, everyone was telling me to get the Lady Smith. It's a hammerless revolver. It sounded good but when I shot it I hated it. I have not yet shot a S&W that I liked. At the time, I found a Walther PPK-S that I loved (search/find that word on this thread for more). Since then, I've found that the Sig is my favorite gun. I love the look of the Glock but I'm horribly inaccurate with it. Same with the Ruger. Sigs work for me. You have to shoot several guns to find what you like. Find a place that lets you try before you buy.
After you find a gun that "feels" right, you need to shoot as often as you can. That's the only thing that's going to make you accurate in your aim and precision. If you're going for lessons, find a retired military or police person. They're going to give you good advice.

Get glazer rounds. Silver or blue. It doesn't so much matter the caliber, it's what it does after impact. That's why I wasn't too concerned about having only a .380. I've also found that the sound of ratcheting a round into a shotgun is a pretty good deterent if someone's in your house.

You can't pull from beneath both armpits simultaneously. (go ahead morons and try it now) So you would have to pull one, then the other, that is just not good. Double guns have to be worn lower to give your arms room to move.

Right and if you were at a competition you would never use one. Or at least cock it ahead of time. But for OH GOD! moments, nothing presents faster than a double action revolver.

Probably true. But here's the thing. I used to have a Reuger 9mm with a 15 round magazine (since made illegal in CA. Fuckers). I always figured in a true puckered-asshole moment the first five or six would go wild before I could calm down and hit someone. Six rounds seems, well, like it might not be enough.

My take get six in a gun your not likely to need 7 of. Then get a quickloader to go with it.

Double Action, meaning it can be fired without cocking the hammer first or you can cock the hammer first. SA means you have to cock the hammer before the gun will fire the first time, and after that semiautos will usually cock the hammer for you (but revolvers won't). SA triggers are usually lighter, and the act of cocking the hammer acts as a safety. DA means you can just pull the trigger, but it will be a heavier pull.

We avoided guns for most of our lives because we didn't grow up in homes with guns (fortunately many of my close relatives did, so I've always wanted one). I plan on doing all the coursework and regular practice sessions. But when you have a person with mobility challenges to care for, you don't always have the luxury of quickly changing your path to avoid danger.

The real reason is that it allows for a lower delivery altitude. The delivering aircraft can zorch across the treetops, deliver the bomb and be away before it goes off. Bomber pilots appreciate anything that allows them to get away from the blast of their own ordnance.

Ok so you have a round in the spout. Do you have a double action pistol? Are you going to need to cock the gun? Do you need to walk around with it fully cocked like a .45 colt? Sure safeties are easy, and unnecessary, and the very first time you face a real threat to your life, likely very complicated. If you do not put 1000 rounds through that gun, I would say you are not guaranteed to be able to operate the safety in a timely manner when posed with a deadly threat for the first time.
It is a lot of angst you need not have.

That's what I'm getting at. An enthusiast, can shoot his gun, and will clear safe as an unconscious matter of course.
An infrequent shooter, has to think about flipping that little switch. And a few trips to the range will not ingrain it sufficiently to guarantee it in a tight situation.

Some guns sure. Others, as long as you've shot *something* in the last few months your ok. For someone who is sort of getting into carry, wanting a gun they can handle, doesn't have an interest in being on the range, DA revolver is the best safe choice. No mysteries or surprises. Easy to use, easy to remember how to use. SA is a superior weapon, but you do have to put some love into it to make sure you are always clean about presentation.

My take. IF they actually do that. They will discover what gun they want on their own eventually and graduate to it. They don't need a suggested weapon, they will find their own. But in the case of a newbie, whose interest I cannot gage, whose dedication I cannot assess. Well in that case, a strong recommendation to visit his local range as often as he can afford, and a suggestion on a weapon extremely easy to handle for a beginner in case he/she never gets past it.

I don't know, that's a pretty elitist attitude if you ask me. Sort of range queen. General guiding principle is don't pay for a coach - go to a range, hang out for a bit, plenty of vets to caoch you for free... I can't begin to tell you the amount of Range Queen bullshit I've heard up here in the PNW. Both me and my brother are USMC range coach qualified.... it's hard to stay quiet knowing some of these folks are getting ripped and the range is complicit.
Posted by: flashoverride at August 05, 2011 11:15 PM (8JPcC)
OK Here is where I've got an issue. If you carry you ought to be familiar with the weapon. But you are *not* law enforcement, not military, not expecting to, at any time in your life, have to draw your weapon and defend yourself. I'm not going to lay down, hard and fast, either visit a range and be solid like a law enforcement officer, or don't bother carrying a gun. Safe and capable, which is why I recommend easy guns.
If you wanted to expand your hypothesis. A person in the city has good chance of rounds causing havoc discharging a weapon in his home. Does that mean he should not have a home defense weapon if he cannot visit the range once a month?

If you are teaching someone with the intent they shoot a pistol start with a rifle not a shotgun. A shotgun introduces bad shooter habits you will have to compensate for later.
Posted by: MikeTheMoose at August 05, 2011 11:20 PM (GE1+K)
"I always advise the following, start with a shotgun - then once you are familiar with gun safety, maintenance, and storage consider a handgun, I would start with a .22lr hunting type handgun. Once you are competent with handgun handling, shooting stances, and can shoot the eye out of a squirrel at 30yards - then move up in caliber."
Wait, what? See, a shotgun is a close-range weapon when used in a typical home defense scenario. It is pretty much the exact opposite of a weapon you want to teach marksmanship fundamentals on. I would agree on the .22, but only insofar as it sets the price point for mastery of basic marksmanship low - maximizing availabilty and presenting the lowest possible price barrier.

I said carry, not keep at home, on the once per month rule. The short barrel carry guns need time, lots of time.
I would always recommend a coach, and not the gun store guy trying to sell you something or a random range guy with a cool bag.
Posted by: Jean at August 05, 2011 11:27 PM (7P7Ij)
I just think their is a big gap between being comfortable handling a gun at a range, and drawing it to kill. And their is a big differnce between being able to do so safely with a SA which does require frequent practice, and a DA which much less practice. For those not capable of putting in time at a range to maintain top proficiency in operation of an SA. A DA gives them the ability to safely defend themselves in an unlikely emergency.

That's tricky. I have a short list from experience. In a new city, I guess you would have to start with NRA certified and local PD recommended. I've known my guys for years, they do remedial training for fed gun carriers who need to requal. Beyond not teaching bad habits, they actually have to be able to teach.

Granted, being a former means I have about a 70%+ chance of detecting range BS... I don't know. I hate the elitist crap nonsense. Samuel Colt didn't make some men equal as long as they trained a certain way a requisite number of times, he made them all equal. A relatively inexperienced shooter in the right place and the right time with minimal instruction has a much greater chance than someone who has missed their self-imposed "quota" and just so happens to be unarmed that day.
Leave it up to me, and I'd make it mandatory in every public school, a minimum of 12 weeks @ 1hr per day. If we're not going to have an effective draft or compulsory service, let's make a nation of riflemen.

OK your talking about a score zone target. Again how much effort someone puts in is their own accord. An ordinary ho hummer who has no interest in firearms outside of carrying one for protection, you'll be lucky to get them to the range in 3 months. Think more like 6. So yes you recommend that extra inch of barrel. But if it's gonna be a purse gun, you're gonna be ignored. So give them something they can obtain. If you get to the range and can't plant the whole cylinder in the bad guy paper at 10 yds you're not coming often enough. Other than that, stay till you can be reliable at 20 yds, and your done.

Look, IRL, if you have a snubby, it's close the distance (which the perp has proabably already done) and hold a controlled pattern as you empty the cylinder. Maybe that crap passes for a miniscule portion of LE that still uses revolvers, but a majority uses semis. What the hell? It's not even anachronisitic at this point, it's just for show. The M1911 has bee around since... well, 1911. Any useless showboating LE who clings to a revolver is just being silly at this point.

Nowadays it doesn't go into a bucket, it goes into a cooling tank and by the time it gets there, it's about 34 degrees. It is truly magnificent in all ways.
It's technically illegal to sell it, but if you know someone with a dairy, you can usually work out a trade. But don't get caught. The other day, www.naturalnews.com had an article on a private buying club which was getting raw milk and they were busted by three different federal agencies: the FDA, Centers for Disease Control and Dept. of Ag.
Remember that freedom you once had? Forget it. Uncle Sugar owns you.

All I can say is, thank GOD we passed that debt ceiling bill, amirite? To have not passed it would have meant we were going to have our credit rating downgraded!

So, any recommendations for a first gun for her, I am all ears.
Back up in the 500s I talked about replacing my wife's Wather 9mm. After trying out almost every handgun at a gun show, we settled on the newest model of the Ruger hammerless .38 revolver. It's a 5 round revolver and very easy to use. If it is for concealed carry self defense, I highly recommend it. It's especially good for people new/nervous with handguns. There is no doubt when it is unloaded vice ready to shoot.
It wasn't cheap though, $600 new. But since my wife has a concealed carry permit and I travel so much, it's worth every penny to me. I don't want to worry that she will have any problems pulling it out of her purse and using it.
