Overnight Open Thread - A New Hope Edition

Rick Perry and the New GOP Litmus Test

Jonathon Last has some thoughts on Perry's debate vapor-lock and the race in general. But he also points out that even before this Perry may have run afoul of the GOP's new - but unspoken - litmus test:

Unless the conversation changes between now and the convention, it would seem that immigration has replaced abortion as the key ideological litmus test in the Republican party. Now, maybe thatÂ’s just a function of the candidates needing a club to beat Perry with and immigration being the best-available weapon. But maybe itÂ’s a more foundational shift. If the latter is the case, then this is a real tragedy for conservatism.
And here he gives some reasons why illegal immigration is different from abortion as an issue and why it would be a mistake to make it the new deal-breaker for GOP candidates. Whether you agree or disagree, if immigration orthodoxy is going to be the new differentiator between RINOs and True Conservatives, better that we get it all out in the open.

11 Sounds That Your Kids Have Probably Never Heard
Well maybe in pre-80's movies but not in real life.

Just to make you feel guilty... Here Are 11 NaNoWriMo Books That Have Been Published

1. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. Might this be another Water for Elephants-style success? ItÂ’s currently on the Barnes and Noble Top 100 List and the New York Times Bestseller list. She cheated a little and wrote it during two NaNos, but weÂ’re not holding it against her. Has anyone read this? IÂ’ve got a sample of it on my Nook right now but havenÂ’t gotten to it yet.

Like Manolo Blahniks and coke?
Then these shoes are for you - they're stylish AND snortable:

Spanish police recently busted a gang of dealers who figured out how to mold cocaine into replicas of Manolo Blahnik shoes. When arrested, the six dealers, five Colombians and one Spaniard, possessed $630,000 worth of cocaine that had been mixed with a liquid to form a paste that was carefully sculpted and painted to mimic luxury high heels. Each pair of coke shoes has an estimated worth of $70,000 — while a real pair of Manolos can cost upwards of $500.

9 Eleven sounds. Really? Oh Junior, get off that lawn.

Ten-digit dialing is a 90's abomination. Back in the day, almost all calls were seven digits. I can remember six.

You had to stand in one place to talk on the phone. If a call was "dropped" you called The Bell System to report it, and they notified Civil Defense. Some bars had five phones, but no phones had five bars.

You can watch it live here. I think there will be hippie punching, but not for hours yet. The hippies are holed up in Pioneer Square in downtown Portland (which is the designated protest locale in downtown Portland). They are having one of their interminable meetings to figure out what to do, which will take hours, of course. It seems obvious that the hippies will try to take another park, and it also seems obvious that the cops will try to stop them. Portland brought in hundreds of cops from surrounding areas as reinforcements - I wonder if they have been sent home. It's a win-win - the hippies get to be martyrs, and do you know what cops get paid for working an overtime Sunday night graveyard shift...

46 I can totally understand those who aren't confident with Perry.

But I can't understand those who reject him knowing that the alternative is going to be worse.  It makes no sense to me.

The reason for the venom from Romney's fans to Perry is that he really can seem like the real threat to Romney.  And if the GOP's answer to a battle of Romneycare vs 12 years of Balanced Budgets is Romneycare, I feel like the GOP has left me and my values.  If the party is about pizazz instead of hard proven results, I am not in the tent anymore.

Hopefully we opt for Newt or Perry and I don't have to worry too much about this, but if the GOP is represented by Romney in 2012 of all years, a time of importance over major spending reforms, it's one of those rare historic times when a political party should come to an end so that a more useful one can emerge.

Anyway, shame on Perry for making this so damn difficult.  I'm going to vote for him, but he should have worked out a way to sell his excellent record, or he shouldn't have run.  It's stupid, but it's also how America does politics.

60 The only litmus test is intelligence and some basic appeal outside the South. Of which Perry has none. He's down to 4 percent repeat 4 percent in the latest poll. On the other hand we should have an immigration litmus test because more immigrants equals more democrats. Not that hard to figure out, Hispanics always vote 2 to 1 democrat. We can't all be like Texas where 70 percent of whites vote Republican no matter what.

Top ten reasons Perry is no longer my guy:

1) He's for rewarding the children of illegal immigrants and calling me heartless for not believing the way he does on it.

2) His head is on a spring of some sort.

3) He began the debates by being an argumentative rude little prick with Romney, who I like even less.

4) He has been such a collosal failure at debating I think the SCOAMF would beat him.

5) He has a brain fart and goes on Letterman and makes an even bigger joke of himself.

6) His performance in New Hampshire made himlook like he had a brain aneurysm.

7, 8 & 9) Uh. Uh. Uh.

I was really hoping the guy would have been better at this national politics thing because he is still a hell of a lot better than Romney.

101 And here he gives some reasons why illegal immigration is different from abortion as an issue and why it would be a mistake to make it the new deal-breaker for GOP

Well, since abortion is the the government sanctioned, and often funded, taking of innocent human life, it is the whole purpose of government to prevent. Just as the original Republican party formed because it was an outrage to our Constitution that one person could own another, the current should continue the fight against abortion.

That being said, the fight over immigration is important, though very tactical.

Eliminate the welfare state, in toto, and it becomes much less of an issue of a large number of low/no skill immigrants come in. It is still something of an issue due to the downward pressure on native born Americans with low or no skills, and the risk of going the way of classical Greece (manual work? That's for barbarians and slaves!) but not the immediate concern of another 20 million Democrat voters joining the rest at the teets of Uncle Sugar.

That brings up a really disgusting notion: in the "off season," say, about now until about April, these young idealists won't be expected to do anything, being revolutionary warriors between campaigns and all. There will be massive freeloading (nothing new in that, but newly hep and institutionalized, now with more moral underpinning!), fund-raising at churches and schools, and the moral equivalent of the quartering of troops.

Some of us here may be old enough to remember a generation of beatnikish ne'er-do-wells who hung about  the university, bookstore, and art scenes, all claiming to have lost their careers due to blacklisting.

It will be like that, except moreso, and with less amusing storytelling.

158 Yeah, good job on trying to take out Perry, immigration hawks.

Posted by: Boone

I really don't blame Perry for some of his conciliatory remarks and past actions regarding the immigration question.  It would be political suicide to take a really harsh immigration stand in Texas.  Until the Federal Government takes a strong and decisive stand on controlling the Southern Border (which they haven't done in 40 years, Democrats and Republicans both), we are stuck.  Perry has to win elections in Texas, and he has to get SOME of the Hispanic vote.

Get real, h8ters.

And Mitt HAS to pander to Democrats in Massachusetts because they've run the state for years, and so all the problems in Massachusetts are caused by Republicans anyways. I swear, people who think that the East Coast states are "smart" really try my patience. Jim McGeevy? Jon Corzine?  Deval Patrick?  Chuck Schumer? Bernie Sanders? Patrick Leahy?  Ted Kennedy? Ted Kennedy!

Posted by: kbdabear at November 13, 2011 10:31 PM (Y+DPZ)

Seems like they made Philly.  Hard to tell if they are at or just near the OccupyPhilly camp.  Took them about 12 hours to go 21 or so miles.

Day off of marching tomorrow.

On Tuesday, leave Philly for Wilmington, DE.

I think whomever answers the bell Tuesday morning to start marching will probably make it to DC.

Well, no Shiite Sherlock. McCain argued that Americans are incapable of picking fuckinÂ’ lettuce, not even at $100k a year. If it wasnÂ’t for Palin I would have abstained from the POTUS election slot. That even knowing that Obama is a commie bastard (literally).

That anti-American Shiite sticks.

Posted by: Boone at November 13, 2011 10:19 PM (Jl3Mu)

See, it says so right on his web-page...

Illegal immigration also puts a tremendous strain on AmericaÂ’s entitlement and health care systems. Illegal immigrants are typically uninsured and cannot afford to pay for their medical care, driving up costs for all Americans, even those actually insured. In fact, several hospitals in the U.S. have declared bankruptcy as a result of the costs of caring for illegal immigrants.

We must secure our borders, enforce our laws and promote the existing path to citizenship.

Any amusement value your vapid little turd posts might have quickly gives way to boredom, irritation, and contempt for how fucking stupid you are.

And the final stage is embarassment. It's embarassing to watch you make such a shit of yourself in public. Don't you have any self-respect? It's insulting to have such a lame-ass ignoramus trolling here. Doesn't Ace of Spades at least rate a C-list troll?

Perry is right - I have no heart - and with Perry on this - eliminate not only the DoE, but all federal funding for colleges. It's easy, like raisning the state drinking age or losing all federal DoT funds (thanks Reagan)  - if your state thinks illegal aliens are legal state residents they don't DoE funds, or DoT , or whatever, not like one has anything to do with the other.

339   Perhaps not much interest to many, but I gotta tell this story.

Today, oldest granddaughter and I went out hunting-she had her bow, I wasn't armed. We primarily were after a deer blind to move it to a different location. Got there, and saw 14 wild turkeys noodling around a clearing. So I told her slip into the woods, and get close as possible. She did just that and the result was her first turkey--nailed with a broadhead.

Needless to say, I'm the planet's proudest grampa.

351 Back in the day when I did suits a lot, I'd get mine from K Ratan Custom Clothier, bespoke.

You'd get a flyer, show up at his hotel room when he hit town, and go through fabric swatches and styles, get measured (unless you were wearing a previous K Ratan suit), and have the thing custom made and shipped from Hong Kong -- for a price comparable to the Mens Wearhouse "good stuff" after they got done with alteration charges -- and it didn't look like it was previously made for an "average person" and tailored to you.

I visited the "back office" when I was in Hong Kong.....er.....they put together 90% of a suit in about 18 hours, in a little room on the 14th floor of a skyscraper with elevators that are about 2'x4'. It's Hong Kong, Jake.

Perry has done more to secure the border than all of the other candidates combined, and every other candidate wants to not only give paltry benefits to illegal aliens, but also citizenship.

I know lots of people who have lost everything at least once.  Some people have the will to get back up, and some don't.  Some people need a time to mourn after a failure before they are capable of rising again.

In other words, have a little faith.  Not everyone of those you think are doomed to drown in their own bullshit will always be so.  Some will, but not all.

381 "That is why he is the worst GOP candidate possible for conservatives.

Posted by: Quagmire at November 13, 2011 09:41 PM (wl2vr)"

What in the hell?

Because of Texas needing highways?  Taking land for highways is totally compatible with conservatism.  It's a completely legitimate use of the government's eminent domain powers.

Anyone saying Perry is the worst conservative among the candidates is a fucking moron.  I can totally understand those who say he's not a very skilled communicator, but his record is 95% conservative.  Balancing 12 years of budgets after a stellar record as a fiscal conservative before he was even governor should count for something.

Sadly, it counts for absolutely nothing.  Every other GOP governor can see that.  They see that Romneycare style government, which is bankrupting MA, is a better career path for GOP governors, than the very hard and humble work of NOT spending, so you can keep taxes low and budgets balanced.  That's the path where you don't use government to fix every problem, so when your economy is great, nimrods claim you didn't do it because the state was prosperous when unimpeded by government.

That hard work of keeping government out of the fucking way is the entire point of conservatism.  Sure, Perry isn't 100% in tune with me on 100% of issues.  But he's the only one running with a record even approaching conservatism in practice, and largely, it's a great record.

"If Romney can best do it, then I'm pro-Romney.  Posted by: chemjeff at November 13, 2011 09:34 PM (s7mIC) "

Why?  Beating Obama... for what reason?  I have reasons for wanting Obama to be beaten.  I do not agree with a government mandate to buy health insurance.  I do not agree with allowing horrible spending to continue (Romney did this as governor, and the path he left MA on is bankruptcy).  I do not agree with 'strong' gun control.

I have answers to "why" when people say we should beat Obama.  Romney is better than Obama, sure, but he's been on the wrong side of everything that matters, aside from foreign policy, and he's been kinda crappy there in 2007-8 upon occasion.

I'm not saying there's no difference between Obama and Romney, but if you really want Obama to be beaten, of course that should mean you disagree with Romney's actual record on most issues.

Respectfully, I think that is compromising WAY too much for a marginal increase in electability.  Frankly, I don't even think Romney is more electable than Perry or Newt just because he's a much slicker politician.  He LOOKS slick.  He is the epitome of a politician, and no one trusts him on anything.  The right will have difficulty unifying.

I didn't see Palin's few gaffes in 2008 cost a single vote.  It was Mccain's inability to be a leader that cost votes.

I understand where you're coming from, and I think it's also very important to beat Obama, but I do not think compromising so much just for a slicker package is either justified or even smart politics.

And just my view, but if a resume of Romneycare beats a resume of 12 years of balanced budgets in the GOP, I think we need to consider the GOP a failure and move on.

382 Okay, this thought just occurred to me about 5 min. ago, as a tangent to another conversation but here goes...

Okay, fine.  Some Municipal Leaders are clearing out some camps of Occupoopers in time for Winter Weather and for "Health" reasons.

What sort of guarantee do the citizens of these municipalities have that the Occupoopers won't be welcomed back in early Summer of 2012 (when the weather is balmier) and allowed to fester until late Oct. or Early Nov. 2012 when they decide to "Occupy" polling places all over the towns and cities they have encamped in?

(Anyone remember the New Black Panther Party in Philly?  And fucking SPARE ME your internet boasts about how YOU personally would kick the ass of anybody that tried that shit in YOUR town.  I'm more worried about the nice lady who was thinking that she doesn't really understand all of the issues but thinks that she should probably cast a vote for something new that might work better than the past 4 years.  She sure as shit isn't going to brave a sea of truncheons or wade into the melee with you.  She'll just smartly turn her car around and forget that she ever wanted to cast a vote that Tuesday.)

Yes, there is a lot of sport to be had at these pathetic loser's expense...but.

Their stated goal is to disrupt civil society and commerce.

I don't think we should be so tolerant of them next iteration.

389 True, despite a fairly good crop of advisors, which Romney doesn't pay attention to, (Fmr. Sec. Navy Lehman, Robert Kagan, et al) who would never tell him to go on a trade war with China, then again Cain had Rumsfeld's spokesman, and he forgot the first rule . Don't trade American for Gitmo hostages, So he helped saddle the state with cap and trade, forming the RGGI, and MassCare, I know it would have been worse, but still, plus he's a merger and acquisition guy, for every good
deal like Sealy and Clear Channel, there's an AMPAD that didn't go well.

Don't worry, I am ABO.  Beyond that: Sorry.  Not buying it.  This blog is a constant droning of people sitting on their asses bitching because every one of our candidates isn't perfect.  We are completely accepting our situation while pretending we won't.

I am actually hoping for more than any of our present candidates can do.  I am also a realist and I place no blame on them.  Our country got in this mess because our voters made it so.  Getting out of this mess will require the same.  It is not about the candidates.  It's about us.  We need to step up our game.  If we do, the candidates will adapt to the new reality.

That sounds smart.

"I don't agree with the ABO creed."

It makes no sense.  There are reasons Obama is a poor president.  There are policies he has wrong.  Those who say ABO are saying that Obama is particularly wrong.  They are trying to say something is really deeply wrong with Obama's path.  Yet... they are also saying that path is not really so bad, so long as the person putting us on that path is not Obama.

It's like they would rather the GOP run the nation off the cliff.

At this point, simply holding steady on status quo spending levels is probably Obama's post 2012 plan.  I doubt he could get away with much more.  That's also the plan of the pandering RINO type.

We're in serious trouble, and the only solution is a real fight that most politicians do not have the stomach for.  I think Newt and Perry have the stomach, and I think Perry has the experience of leading a large government well.  I also think most of the criticisms of Perry (other than those noting he sucks in the debates) are falsehoods.  Either folks are ignorant, or they are trying to convince themselves, probably due to one of the two cults of personality in the GOP right now, one being the Romney cult which is kinda in denial about what they are.  They think Romney is fabulously brilliant, despite his record of failure.  They care way too much about how much he looks like a presidential politician, oblivious to what this really says about the man and his actual chances.

I don't mean to judge, though.  Beating Obama is important.  But it's not personal.  I don't hate Obama.  I just think his policies are wrong and his leadership has been poor in many instances.

I think had Romney win the 2008 election, we would have a very, very similar world today to what we really got.  I am for A.B.L. (anyone but liberal).  It's time for leaders who don't think government is the solution, but realize they need to get out of the way.

455 Truman, I don't mean to be scary.

It really was a logic bubble that popped off of my head when I was discussing another matter entirely (but not quite, obviously).

I didn't know what to make of it.

Thought I'd put it out there for the Morons to hash over.

More importantly!!!

Am I a giant douche?

Yesterday, I was in a residential neighborhood, doin' my jerb, and noticed that the right front tire car I had parked on a side street  was FLAT.

Meh!  But no problem really, I know how to change a flat!

I ended up calling the Motor Club because despite my having the tools and experience to change a simple flat tire....

I could NOT get the vinyl(?)  F*$^&*# , COVER off of the spare tire that's been riding on the back of my RAV4 for almost a decade.

So, anyway, I finally admitted defeat and called the Motor Club and sat there for 45 min. while everybody in the neighborhood, it seems, walked their dogs or went on bike-rides and laughed at me for not knowing how to change a tire.

Grrr!

Guy shows up with a Tow-Truck, wrestles with the cover (cords on his neck bulging) for 15 min. until he wins and says that since the Motor Club is paying him he might as well just change the tire for me also.

Well...

Fuck, Yeah!

I mean, I CAN change a flat tire (assuming I have reasonable access to the spare) but, who wants to?

I hate getting dirty and I loathe lifting things, so "Go for it!"

Turns out the "spare" tire is flattish.

I was thinking to get that tire put on my vehicle and limp around to the Circle-K I knew to be just 3 streets away.

Nope.  Mike would have none of it.

He put my lonely spare tire on the back of his giant rig and we maneuvered to the Circle-K and filled it up to "35lbs. Pressure Just in case it gets cold in the morning"  Uhm, Okay?.

So, long story short.

If I had had my druthers, I would have handled this myself, just on principal.

Had to involve the Motor Club when I couldn't physically get to the fucking spare tire!

Tow-Truck Mike was extra cool.

I assume he gets paid well to be on call for this sort of bullshit by his company and his company finds it worthwhile to have my Motor Club run him ragged with refferals.

I tipped him $5.

How much of a douche, am I?

I don't rightly know what sort of bill I'm going to receive for this service.  It might be nothing or it might be $300.  I had no other choice.  I couldn't take care of the problem on my own, at that time, at that place.

Any Morons here ever been a Tow-Truck driver?

I totally was not expecting to have a flat tire that day and I greatly appreciate all of the help, but honestly $5 was all I had in my wallet for a tip.

How cool that would be, but he chose MA over Utah to begin a career in politics.  He decided to be the liberal Republican, which is kinda the family business.

BTW, Huntsman is bad, but he's better than Romney for sure.  At least Huntsman was a pretty successful governor with a more conservative record than Romney.  Huntsman sucks, sure, but aside from his worshiping Obama, he's better than Romney in any way I'm aware of.

But that dope has no chance.  I have no idea why Romney is viable and Huntsman isn't.  I guess one is simply the better behind the scenes politician.

I see Romney and see a guy who pathetically practiced running for president for  many years, while ducking out of every single policy debate that actually needed leadership.  I wonder if Romney has a darkly dim view of America's ability to be conned like this.

I'd vote for Obama over Pelosi or Rangel or Conyers.

It's basically 100% likely I will be voting against Obama, of course.  None of the GOP frontrunners are as bad as he is.

But I'm not ABO.  I'm opposed to liberal policies such as Romneycare and gun control and excessive spending and pandering on entitlements.  It's not some personal beef I have with Obama.  I don't care if he's an asshole or a really nice guy who happens to make terrible decisions.

I am ABO, and I do not apologize for that.  I know it is only a meager hope, but it is the hope I have.

I know what we need to do, and none of these people can do it.  I accept that, too.  I hope for more, but it is not within the mold everyone is presently locked into.

No, I'm not. But I know which side owns most of the guns and tends more towards certain skill sets.

My only assumption is that if there is no way to restore control, the next best thing is crash the vehicle in a way that favors some preference. Barring some really dramatic change in the electorate, the train is going off the rails. Increasingly, the sole options are not to prevent the crash but how best to walk away and hope to build another train sooner than later.

We are in completely unknown territory here. The people who think they command the big picture are as much the problem as anything. They are heart of big government that makes mistakes on a far greater scale than any individual or small group can hope to equal.

People here focus on so much superficial bullshit.

The main issue is challgening the Gramscian narrative.

Newt has been challenging it in the debates (see Saturday nights "rule of law" question as an example); Romney has been going with the flow.

Funk dat - you don't save America by not challenging the narrative.

Romney = reaarranging chairs on the Titanic.

I think the problem is threefold; certainly the Big Government types are a problem, like you say, but I also think jc is dead right about the media being complete tools of the Left. That is scary beyond belief, too.

And honestly, the average person on the street is also to blame. We have become a nation of whiners and bleeding hearts, and our government reflects that.

I don't understand how they can all watch Europe imploding, yet still push us down the Socialist path.

That's kind of the weird self-destructive thing about the conservative grassroots - here's one guy - one guy -- with both the intellectual capacity and the willingness to get in the left's faces, and he gets attacked by a bunch of malcontent anklebiters.

And they complain that it's all an act.

Who gives a shit? Nobody else will do what he's doing, and without it we're sunk: conservatively, competently managed and administered right off the cliff, albeit slower.

502 Newt is better than Romney.

People here comically miss the big picture time and time again - it's the narrative that's killing America.

He was never my guy for national office. He's also (like Jindal) run creationist cant through the school system. I admit that I care a little less about that now than I did before, but it's still a strike against him.

Pawlenty, on the other hand, I actively hated because of his creationist-pandering. I think this is because I had lower expectations of Perry - I thought Perry was a bit of a dullard, so I assumed that he actually believed in this tripe. Pawlenty on the other hand triggered my bullshit meter. If there's anything I hate more than a creationist, it's a panderer to creationists.

The American public has already been well trained by the MBM to detest Newt Gingrich. A huge number of fence straddlers would stupidly leap into Obamaland if Gingrich were the candidate. Seriously damaged goods.

This is a big part of the problem. Anybody the left doesn't think sufficiently RINO will get the full-court press from Jon Stewart and his ilk. Far too much of the electorate forms their opinion from SNL and the Daily Show. (Yet another reason I want the voting age raised to 25 or, even better, 30.)

#504

Because they think the rules don't apply. Very few people who lived through the Great Depression as adults are still around or capable of discussing it. (My 82-year-old mother was shocked by some of the things she learned from Amity Schlaes book. And she was there. ) Perhaps if America were turned into a giant classroom and everyone was required to read 'The Forgotten Man. There will be a test: the rest of your life and that of your children for generations to come.

We're replaying the Madoff Scam on the national level. Madoff offered ROI that should have made any rational person suspicious. And remember, these were generally very successful people. Almost certainly of above average intelligence to have the money to invest in the first place. The scam relied on these people believing they were special and being invited into an exclusive club just for the likes of them. That they were somehow entitled to earn well in excess of the single digit returns earned by the common folk.

The difference here is that the status of US citizen is now being held up as membership in a special club not subject to the gravity drawing the Europeans in a death spiral towards very rough terrain. Thus we have the public sector unions creating a situation guaranteed to bring ruin. But they either believe in a fantasy that will avert the debts coming due or simply don't care.

Nihilism could explain much as well. My generation (tail-end Boomer, depending on how you measure) spent our entire youths and into middle-age, for the oldest of the Boomer set, being told to fear nuclear annihilation at any moment. For a very large part of us it wasn't if but when. I wonder if this had an ongoing effect on our psyches that left us twisted in a way not known to Westerners since the Black Death.

Perhaps it's what P.J. O'Rourke suggested:  We cannot deal with serious issues because we aren't serious people. We boomer fought cultural wars for our right not to be serious people. So now we can watch 'Blazing Saddles' uncensored on basic cable but was there a cost?

Not participating in an electoral sham is itself a vote. It's a withdrawal of legitimacy for this political system. As for my comment about creationism; obviously I'm not for it, but I would vote for a creationist - or better, "anti - Darwinist" - who could articulate a programme for American renewal. I will not vote for a dimwit or a panderer, who goes this way because he or she thinks it will get him votes.

(Reuters) - Germany's Interior Minister warned on Sunday of a "new form of far-right terrorism" as details emerged of a grotesque film left by members of a neo-Nazi cell in eastern Germany, in which they claimed the murder of nine immigrants between 2000 and 2006.
Prosecutors said on Sunday that police had arrested a suspected accomplice of the group, which referred to itself in the film as the
"Nationalist Socialist Underground," and which is also thought to be behind the murder of a policewoman in 2007 and a bomb attack on a Turkish area of Cologne in 2004.

So what makes the National Socialist Underground right wing? Or far-right wing? You get so into personal liberty you become a... national... socialist...

Thanks.  It is part of my work.  Here's an example of how far down toward our root assumptions I am trying to take the discussion:

"There are 5 ways to acquire wealth:
Type 1 – can be defined as something that only one human could do with enough time  even if there were no other humans at all.  Examples:  hunting, gathering, farming, mining, logging, brick making, milling, smelting, etc. -- ie. actually gathering or creating items of wealth where none existed before.  Type 1 wealth acquisition is the only one that is truly wealth creation, and it is the only one that is fully independent.  That is, Type 1 wealth creation does not depend on any of the other four ways to acquire wealth.

All of the following forms of wealth acquisition require Type 1.  In a sense, Type 1 is wealth creation, and the other four types are wealth distribution.

Type 2 – Cooperate with others.  This form of wealth acquisition is mostly just the process of making other people happy.  Type 2 wealth acquisition overlaps extensively with Type 1.  For example, a person could make boots for miners, loggers, and farmers.  Making boots is a form of Type 1 wealth creation, but it is also a form of making other people happy.

Type 3 – Inherit wealth from others – not just your rich uncle bob, also includes lots of stuff you might not think about, such as living in any city older than you -- where some taxpayer funded the sidewalk you use, and you got it for free.

4. charity.
5. steal it, in all forms including slavery, over-taxation, con games, protection rackets, fraud, armed robbery, etc.

Note that No.s 2, 3, 4, & 5 require someone to do No. 1 before they are even possible."

-------

Now, I truly think we have been swimming in our own bullshit for so long that what is written above will actually be news to some people.

Further, I think one of the reasons we no longer can even talk to the left is so many of them have been brainwashed.  They actually think that Type 1 wealth is really stealing, that charity is really an entitlement, and that stealing is really cooperating.  They are not correct, and we need to say so -- to their faces -- incessantly and in as condescending of a manner as needed to let them know that we will no longer let them steal from us.

Example: Me talking to OWS -- You don't like income inequality, then go make someone happy, and you will have wealth.  Don't want to make someone else happy? -- then go make it yourself from scratch.  Don't want to work that hard?--then go fuck yourself.  You can make it, you care earn it, you can take what charity we offer, but are not going to let you steal it.

521 On the creationism thing, I thought Palin had a good answer. It should be OK to discuss it in some classes but Biology wasn't it.

There are certain subjects I just don't discuss with people I highly respect. They're entirely rational folks and some of them I'd gladly have in high office. I also know there are beliefs they've taken to heart because it gets them through life. The test for me is whether they remain rational in situations where a policy decision is needed and remaining true to the beliefs will clash with the rights of many.

Is there anyone here who doesn't agree that John Ashcroft was a vastly better Attorney Gerneral than Eric Holder or Janet Reno? Yet, when he was appointed, the left was up in arms that he would perform as a crazed theocrat. But it became plain that he upheld the law, whether it was to his liking or not, because that was the job he'd agreed to perform.

At this point I might take a Scientologist seriously as a candidate if they were otherwise conservative and well able to articulate why they were and why this was best for the nation. This is rather improbable but the dire future we face requires me to be open to the prospect.

Actually I think that it would be worse, if Romney (or McCain) had won 2008. There would probably not be bailouts or stimulus as Obama did them. This means the flashmobs would have started earlier. #ows would certainly have started earlier. And Romney - and McCain - would not have had the fortitude to face up against them. Oh, and that 2010 election? Democratic landslide, baby.

The reason to vote McCain was, frankly, the hope that Palin would be as powerful as Cheney. Romney probably would have tagged Jeb Bush as his running mate

Send those here illegally back, if they have a court hearing determing residency we can perform the trial via video from Mexico.  Send the bill to the Mexican government or make the illegal pay for it.  Why pay for incarceration or monitoring them only to have them disapper.  No more anchor babies and if they are found to have stolen an identity, they are banned from the country permanently.

That reminds me of my take on income inequality. Which is, nobody should care because in a free society the wealth of others doesn't make you poor.

Further, income inequality can only increase as human ingenuity creates more ways to be wealthy. OTOH, the baseline for poverty hasn't changed in the entire history of our species. Butt naked on the savannah. Assuming no gross deformities and general good health, that is as bad as it gets. Finding a good throwing rock to bring down a rabbit for some protein is a huge improvement in your status. You've gone from being flat broke to having a tool to improve your status. Yay.

Being born in a developed nation, even to the poorest parents, makes you substantially better off than almost every other human to date. If someone invents time travel should we expect the ACLU to round up the first 100,000 years worth of humans to complain about chronal wealth inequality?

Instead of comparing your life with that of a Fortune 500 CEO, compare your circumstances to the wealthiest people a century ago. What common parts of your life would be astonishing to them and simply unpurchasable for all the wealth of that era? Even more recently, say 50 years ago. Would you trade you life in 2011 for that of a multi-millionaire in 1961? For myself, I'm not sure an unlimited stream of hookers would compensate for all I'd be giving up.

When you consider all of the niceties anyone living in a developed country today enjoys, it seems to me that capitalism has done a far better job a spreading wealth around than any socialistic scheme. Because you cannot share in wealth when its creation is prevented.

=====

Thanks for the encouragement. It really helps me keep trying.

I would love to tell you guys the best parts, but I think I can get it published and I don't want it stolen.  Here's a teaser -- it is just one of three that make up the backbone of my approach --

'Human time is channeled on earth based on:  (here comes just one of three)
a formula that is essentially chemical in nature -- a combination of atoms that form a molecule -- the atoms are opportunity, willingness, and ability -- together the molecule is OWA.  Note that if any of the atoms is missing, the molecule cannot form -- that is, it doesn't matter how much opportunity one has, or how much ability one has if they are simply unwilling.  And likewise for the other combinations of atoms -- it takes all three to form the molecule.'
---------
Now I will argue that this is a simple truth of the universe.  Yet, our government seems to be incapable of figuring it out.  We actually had a Department (remember Joe Califano?) called Health, Education, and Welfare -- three things that are all about ability.  An entire enterprise that completely, deliberately ignored Willingness & Opportunity.  We also have several kinds of Equal Opportunity programs -- again, entire organizations focused on just one atom while ignoring that we need the whole molecule.  So, the end result is that we don't really help people, we just play at helping people.  It makes for a great bureaucracy, but doesn't ever actually succeed at the job.  No one has ever proposed a Department of OWA, but if we did, we might actually help willing people when they need the help.
------
That is one example of what I mean about when I say we can be correct, or we can drown in our own bullshit.

539 LOL, Bers, I like 'em, too!!

yeah I was blasting my ears out before too. I finished rebuilding the mechanisms on that old 1917 victrola thing. It works like a charm, but I had to listen to some of the super old records to test it. That old shit was really bad for the ears, so I had to fire up the guitar and move forward about 80 years, lol

540 The fact is the SCoaMF is the worst President I know of. Sure there are arguments for previous others, but they had not been able to use the accumulated powers that modern Presidents have assumed.

Saying that, even he has found that there are certain reality constraints upon him, like not being able to close Gitmo. He couldn't just yank us out of Iraq in 2010, though he is doing it a year later.

Certain degrees of freedom that he assumed he had just aren't there in the real world. It really must have come as a total shock to him. So then he spins these constraints as him making wise decisions.

The coming election is an existential one. Without him gone, we might not be able to exist as the United States of America. We could balkanize. Europe is facing this same situation, except their union is not as long, strong, and protected as ours.

Our creaky old system of Constitutional government is the oldest form of continuous government present in the world.

It causes me no shame whatsoever to stand up for it, and to call out those multiple turds trying their best to undermine it in the Congress, the SC, and the Presidency.

The ash-heap of history is littered with cases that failed the tests.

Hey, the newer shit is not exactly easy on the ears, as I'm sure you know! David has terrible tinitis (sp?) from his garage band days...in fact, I think he's waling away over there on the pre-CBS Twin Reverb that delivered the final blow....well, that and the fact that he always ended up playing next to the cymbal happy drummer...

542 Also, in such conversations, if the other person is equipped to understand the question, I ask where the software mines are. Don't you know that Microsoft chose Redmond after locking up the mineral rights? They hit a rich vein of Windowsium in the mid-80s and after a few rough years to hone the refining process, owned the market for goods made from Windowsium. The Officetonium strike they made in the adjoining mine only made them that much richer.

But hey, that lands is part of the U.S. so the wealth from it belongs to all of us!

But no, actually there are no software mines. It was all created out of thin air from the most personal, valuable, and intangible wealth of all: human thought. Microsoft could have stayed in New Mexico and kept working that BASIC mine. Or gone anywhere at all. Brains are portable. Treat them badly and they'll get up and walk away. But they are the source of all wealth, including the very concept of wealth. Without them, that guy on the savannah cannot look at a rock and figure out it can be used to made a rabbit hold still and be eaten.

========

I am trying to get to the lowest common denominator about human life as a non-hermit.  On this level, I don't think it matters that we live in the present -- I think the real answers about humans are timeless, because they were written by the creator of the universe --

Because these laws were written by the creator of the universe they are like gravity, themodynamics, chemistry, etc. -- laws we can discover, and teach each other, and use to our advantage -- but we can never change them, and we sure as hell cannot vote them away.

And, because they are laws like gravity, in order to use them to our advantage, we must manipulate tradeoffs and we will always have to mature enough to accept the consequences of the tradeoffs we make.

The task is more than just defeating a man. The greater task is defeating the bad idea for which he is merely the latest avatar. Otherwise we'll only be wresting a small delay in the collapse.

This is a bigee. People no longer seem to understand that everything comes with a price, and that you have to take the bad with the good.

549 He has had to adapt. He had a filibuster proof Senate and owned the House, yet he wasn't able to push his full agenda through. Why? Because members of his own party couldn't go quite that far. Their self preservation instincts kicked in.

So now he's forced after 2010 to negotiate for less than his desire for full fledged socialism. It's not flying. But he can at least try and move that damn Overton window some more.

Well the suckers are spring driven, flat springs in a drum that you wind up when you crank it over. The billion year old grease got real hard so the thing would't spin steady and it was clunking. I had to take everything apart and soak the parts in mineral spirits, then assemble it with all new grease. It works great now. Didn't plan on having to do it, but shit happens.

Your wording makes me think you are pointing out BS in the narrative.  I agree with you.  They love to tell us that, but it isn't true.  What is true is there are more confused people than confident people, and that is where their power lies.  The more we can cut the confusion, the more we will cut their power.

578 "If the latter is the case, then this is a real tragedy for conservatism."

This gentleman could not be more incorrect. Failure to stand fast against any compromise with illegal immigration would mean the following. I leave it to the reader to determine whether or not these things would be good or bad for conservatism:

1. It would cement the idea that we will not fight for victory against what the media favors.

2. It would cement the idea that all demographics are equal, but some are more equal than others, and can thus do as they feel they need they must, especially if it regards economics.

3. It will cement the idea that if one can not get one's way via the rule of law, you can just do an end-around--that in other words, if you cheat long enough and hard enough, you can present people with a fait accompli and demand they take it.

4. It will cement the idea the idea that we have an obligation to help those in the rest of the world, not by helping them change their systems to better insure opportunity, or by giving them fair trade via the free market capitalist system so that they may grow their own nations in their own ways, but by letting them in this nation. Since we cannot take everyone in the world in, this is problematic.

5. It will cement the idea that only economic outcomes count as determining considerations in American public policy, especially in regards to those not as prosperous as they desire to be. All other considerations must yield. In that light, we should never expect to win an argument against total income redistribution.

6. It will cement in place the idea that if you don't like something in a democracy, you can import enough voters and promise them things until you have enough to make a majority. In other words, the idea that if you don't like the people as they are, you change the people, not yourself. And that you do it on the sly.

7. It will cement in place the idea that you can move somewhere and make demands (including on the public fisc) on those who owe you nothing, and who already give you basic human rights (i.e., there are no pogroms against Hispanics in the United States. Period. If you disagree, go research what a pogrom actually was/will probably be again).

8. It will cement in place the idea that the people of the United States do not get the final say on what their country will be--that both groups within and without the nation will have vetoes.

I could go on, but I hope everyone sees the point. A surrender on illegal immigration is the creation of a mortal threat to conservatism/classic liberalism/"libertyism" that may not prove survivable; a win on this issue, on the other hand, is a death wound to one branch of leftism/fascism/socialism/progressivism, and will have  positive benefits in other areas. Surrendering means there is a chance we become Venezuela; winning means we are that much closer to being what we can be, the bright shining city on a hill governed by the people themselves in a moderate rule-of-law fashion, where the "Protestant" work ethic is the final determiner of your prosperity, not a politician acting as a patron (or a foe).

Posted by: Insert Name Here at November 14, 2011 04:18 AM (jJQ0e)

579 As a follow-up: if we are one day going to have to "compromise" on illegal immigration, then my compromise is this: take the number of illegal immigrants, increase the quota for Mexico, Guatemala, et al by that amount--and demand that only those who have never been in the U.S. illegally be eligible. In other words--sure, we'll take in 12 million Hispanics. Just not the ones here right now. Those guys--never. And I actually happen to like the culture and the people in many ways. But they are demanding where I do not feel they have a right to demand, and that I cannot abide.

Posted by: Insert Name Here at November 14, 2011 04:26 AM (jJQ0e)

580 So... What do you think is the "line in the sand" past which no Conservative Candidate shall not trod, Insert? Is this a singlular issue for you? Black and White, Yea or Nay? What if NO candidate says precisely what you want to hear on this issue? Are they all then irredemably corrupt and thus not worthy of your vote? Tell me more...
