— Maetenloch Hey all - I'm back.
And tanned, rested, and ready...for another vacation which is why I always say that any sufficiently awesome vacation requires still another vacation to fully wind down from it.
Well that ain't gonna happen so I offer this eye exam instead.
Oh and thanks to all the people who worthily filled in on the ONT during my absence!
Well take this quick test to see if you need glasses: Sitting at your normal reading distance from the screen do you see Marilyn Monroe or Albert Einstein?

If you see Marilyn Monroe, you should probably be wearing glasses or contacts.
If you see Albert Einstein, then you're seeing things as you should.
So how does it work? The answer is that this image is a mix of low frequency elements from a picture of Monroe and high frequency details from a picture of Einstein. Normally our brain pays more attention to higher frequency components of an image so if you have normal vision, you'll tend to see Einstein's face. But if you're near-sighted, the high frequency details are blurred and so you'll just see Monroe.
Oh and here's another illusion that turns normal faces into horrible monsters.
To find out why it happens, go here.
How Good Is Yer Kidz Schools?
Well go here and enter your address, zip code, or school name to find out. The ProPublica site will give the rundown on the school and even compare it with others in the area. Sadly my high school seems to have declined since my days there.

So What Are Norwegian Prisons Really Like?
Well truthfully they sound pretty cushy and remember that even mass murders like Anders Behring Breivik can end up in open prisons like Bastoey Island albeit for 21 years at most.
I was visiting Bastoey, an open prison 45 miles south of the Norwegian capital. It is home to about 115 detainees, including murderers, rapists and other felons, who enjoy activities not usually associated with prisons. In summer, they can improve their backhand on the tennis court, ride a horse in the forest and hit the beach for a swim. In winter, they can go cross-country skiing or participate in the prison's ski-jumping competition.
Inmates work between 8:15 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. The island is a farm, so there are cattle to tend, timber to cut and organic crops to grow. Inmates also work at a sawmill, using axes, knives and saws. Another job is to restore wooden houses dotted around the island. Based on their time in Bastoey, many men will obtain professional qualifications.

Interested in Reloading?
Then get yourself the Lee Anniversary reloading kit for $81.98. I first bought mine about 13 years ago for about $80 and it was an excellent deal then. And now it's only gotten better.

Steve McQueen: Tough Guy
Well most of this probably isn't a surprise to longtime ONT readers, but Neo-neocon also uncovers some extra Steve tidbits.
For McQueen, the best thing that ever happened to him when he was growing up was to be rejected by his alcoholic mother and raised by his great uncle. Unfortunately, she kept asking for him back, and whenever he returned to her, trouble ensued. The next best thing that happened to him when he was young was to have been labeled incorrigible as a result of his stepfatherÂ’s petition, and placed in California Junior Boys Republic in Chino, California. The third best thing was that McQueen finally decided to get with the program when he was a Marine.
McQueen had an unusual reputation for demanding free items in bulk from studios when agreeing to do a film, such as electric razors, jeans and several other products. It was later found out that McQueen requested these things because he was donating them to the BoyÂ’s Republic reformatory school for displaced youth, where he had spent time during his teen years. McQueen made occasional visits to the school to spend time with the students, often to play pool and to speak with them about his experiences.

So is there where I come for my nifty little add-on where I can filter out posts from certain posters?
Do you have a black friend who is a conservative? And can you make lasagna in individual portions for re-heating later? Did you ever sneak your Jewish friend into confession? If so, then you too may qualify for the super sekrit rude commenter filter.

Nice, thanks for asking. We went to a gold mine--had to ride a tiny, tiny elevator down 1000 feet, thought I was going to have a heart attack right then and there. We also went to the Renaissance Festival. Been going on for 35 years there--as Biden would say, it's a big effin deal! And, my mom took the boy and I to the Pirates exhibit at the Denver Museum of Science.
Plus, my mom made my absolute favorite cake ever for my birthday--german chocolate, with the coconut pecan frosting over the whole thing. Plus extra on the side. Mmmmmmmmmm.

I saw Einstien.
I actually have a cool story about Einstien. I worked for a company called Linclay once and the owner bought Einsteins old house in Charlotte Amile, St. Thomas USVI.
He sent me down there to remodel (well save enough to make the locals happy and build a new house) Einstiens house and build a guest house, pool etc.
In the course of tearing into the old structure we found a bunch of Einstien photos of him and friends hanging out at his house there in St. Thomas. We included them in a book we made regarding the construction of the house and gave it to my boss at the open house. The entire experience was awsome.

You little...I'm gonna shove sausages down your throat and starving dogs up your butt!
Heh! That reminds me of a surgeon I use to work with. So the most common way to stop the heart from beating for heart surgery is to stick a needle in the aorta and inject a high potassium solution (cardioplegia) above where the aorta is clamped off. Sometimes, you shouldn't put the needle in the aorta or a cross clamp on the aorta if the aorta is really calcified (there are other indications as well). So then a catheter is placed in the coronary sinus (which is the opening of the vein that drains the myocardium) and the cardioplegia is given through that (retrograde plegia).
An old surgeon I use to work with hated retrograde plegia. He said "It's like taking a hotdog and shoving it up your rectum and calling it lunch."

In the course of tearing into the old structure we found a bunch of Einstien photos of him and friends hanging out at his house there in St. Thomas. We included them in a book we made regarding the construction of the house and gave it to my boss at the open house. The entire experience was awsome.

Depending on the method you connect to the internet it can be easy, or a huge pain in the ass. Start with unplugging your modem and router overnight. That might do the trick.
If you have a direct connection (not through a router) go to a command line, and type in:
ipconfig/release
Shut everything down, then bring everything back up.
This may or may not work.
If it works you owe me a beer. If it doesn't work? Talk to curious.

You can enter the phone number into Bing or Google. Sometimes you'll find that the callers are part of a scam. Happened to me last week, I kept getting calls from a 718 (iirc) area code. Put it in Bing and got some sites where people enter notes about the calls they got from this number.
Posted by: Mayday at July 24, 2011 06:30 PM (TRgli)
It's a washington cell phone number. I'm thinking it probably is a solicitor call. Because everyone who actually knows me knows to either leave a message--usually a huffy one if they really want me to call them back, or will call my cell phone and leave the huffy message there.
Or a bill collector. Though I don't owe anyone any money so that seems less likely.

Oh, but illegal aliens are good for the American economy. They don't use any of our services for free and they do all those jobs that Americans won't do. Plus they spend all their money they make in America, keeping all kinds of Americans employed. It's not like they support their relatives back in the old country, and they assimilate so well here. I liked it too. Also, while it is a tie-in to the upcoming Avengers movie, I thought it stood well enough on its own. If somebody asked, I go see it in the theaters again (and maybe get better seats than the 1st row).
Some of the strict Captain America fan-boyz might have a problem with how HYDRA (the "hail Hydra" salute was stupid though) and Red Skull were depicted, but to hell with 'em. I left that movie feeling pretty damn good.

I plugged the numbers into Yahoo search and always ended up finding what collection place they were associated with. I actually sent a couple of cease & desist letter (which worked instantaneously). But, collection agencies are looking up names and trying anyone who sounds even remotely like the deadbeat whose account they have purchased. It's a real problem lately.

They won't give up. I've been getting the same calls for months here in Florida. You have to answer, say 'no thank you', and THEN hope it stops. It'll be a charity or a political organization looking for donations. Do you have 'do not call' lists out where you are? When I lived in CT, I could register with someone, can't remember who exactly, and I was placed on a list and telemarketers couldn't call me. Same with my cell phone. Good luck.

How you doing? Is Mr. rrn back?
I am fine, thanks! I did my relay this weekend, and the weather was perfect! We ran Friday and Saturday so it was nice and cool. Today would have been a little warm!
Yes, Mr rn is back! He came home a couple of hours ago. He's so sweet, he brought back flounder for me (because it's my favorite fish). Everyone thought he was nuts. So he and I filleted a bunch of little flounder (I got to teach him how to do that--ha! because he'd never done it before. I've always said that God made flounder to be filleted into 4 little perfect filets.)
He came home with about 50 lbs of fish. He has another 50 lbs. he left at his parents house (they have a huge freezer), and his dad has 100 lbs. too. We will have to have you guys over for salmon (he does the cedar plank thing, and it's really good!) We can also give you some too, if you want (I don't know if you get it from work or not). We are going to be giving some to relatives and neighbors too. They limited 3 or 4 days and caught cod, salmon (coho, silvers, and sadly some pinks), halibut, rockfish, and flounder.

Investors will remain hesitant on buying the greenback this week, but the real problems for the currency may come instead on any downgrades of the U.S. sovereign rating, says Hiroshi Maeba, a senior FX dealer at Nomura Securities. After recent comments from ratings agency S&P concerning the need for a longer term deficit reduction plan, Maeba says "the real trouble for the dollar would be if S&P or other agencies cut their ratings on U.S. debt." He says investors in Asia have remained relatively calm despite speculation of potential turbulence, amid statements from U.S. authorities that a technical default remains out of the question.

I used to do a lot of reloading back in the day. I like the Lee turret press: it has removable turrets that can be set for different cartridges. The picture at the top of the thread is the Lee "classic" press; the turret press is slightly more expensive.
Lee sells their reloading equipment substantially less than other manufactures but quality is decent. They streamline their manufacturing process in order to reduce cost. For example where a competitor would use one large casting, my turret press has threaded steel rods connecting the top and bottom.
I use an old RCBS priming tool to set the primers -- it offers a better mechanical advantage than a lot of the priming tools made now-a-days but it's not made any longer. It seems everyone wants a priming tool with a hopper but I'm old school, I guess.
The advantage with reloading is that it allows you to make relatively inexpensive ammo for plinking or customize a load for your particular firearm for best accuracy.

Rules for Drunken Scrabble:
Play any word you want, real or imaginary.
If (when) you are challenged on it, you have to make up a definition for the word. The funnier and more bullshit-tier, the better.
If your definition is sufficiently amusing, then you keep the word.
Otherwise, you drink.

It is a statistical inevitability that a certain percentage of Democrats will go off the tracks and be found out to be "nuts". We should mass all of them bunny suits or something.
And Republicans in "swing" districts? Well, they are likely to be RINO's and ready to go nuts from the cognitive dissonance inherent in being a RINO.

Okay. I'm calling it. Time of death 12:24 a.m. The 7/24/11 ONT fought the good fight.
Goodnight, Merovign.

*sigh*, I guess I'll watch another episode or two of Supernatural before I go to the gym and then bed. Good night, everyone.

Dear Speaker Boehner,
You have failed. You have not led. This isn't esoteric economics.
I just heard of the new super congressional pact formation of 6 and 6 to fast track this mess.
What a miserable display of leadership.
Millions supported you and we built a coalition that established your power base and you have only squandered time and effort.
Please do your job. Lead sir, lead.

ItÂ’s time for Americans to realize that governing scrabble is hard work, and that a president The Q Continuum canÂ’t can just wave a magic wand and fix everything.

At the same time, they are complaining about how the news media automatically has a script for calling every terrorist attack the work of a right-wing fundamentalist.
Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay funny. That's why I never comment at HA.

If you do the Magic Eye thing where you "unfocus" right at the center of the picture, you'll see what I see, I think. But I can't do the Magic Eye thing, so I'm not sure. I mean, I can do it, but it doesn't work, because I have the eyes of a burrow owl (functionally).

Evening, Jewells.
I have a cat named Steve McQueen. Runs like his tail is on fire.
-----------------
Amazing coincidence! My cat "Steve McQueen" wheezes like he's got a bad lung disease, or something.

I think various cobloggers ended up deleting comments on a grand scale just trying to get the page to load...

The only source I've seen for this "Super Congress" thing is some lefty writer on HuffPo, who didn't say where he heard about it. Every other site I've seen mention it has cited him. I'm treating it as bullshit until someone confirms it.

Dude, I hope not. I can only take part in so many campaigns to unban people. There was Logprof...well, that's pretty much my limit.
