— Maetenloch 50 Things Every 18-Year-Old Should Know
Well this list is more general principles and advice than specific skills. Though I would add to the mix being able to change a tire without assistance and general first aid plus CPR. You may not need these skills very often but when you do, you'll probably need them very badly.
Oh and learn to type. If I had known how much of my later life would be spent pecking at a keyboard, I would have skipped computer programming in high school and taken typing instead.

9) College is a lot more work than high school and your job will be a lot more work than college was.10) Start looking for a new job BEFORE you quit your old job.
16) If you're not happy with the job market, the government, or the schools in your area, remember that you can always move to another city or another state. Lots of Americans do just that every year.17) "I wish that I had known to check the oil in my vehicles and to have changed it regularly. It would have saved a lot of money that I spent on repairs -- directly due to my lack of changing the oil per the mechanic." -- Ann H.
34) If you get into a business deal with someone who goes to unusual lengths to convince you of how honest or Christian they are, watch your wallet and make sure you have an iron clad contract. They "doth protest too much."35) "You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." - Jim Rohn
39) Nobody owes you a living.Conservative Myths About 200840) You are not a victim.
There's a certain amount of retconning going on among unhappy conservatives that 1) McCain was somehow forced on the GOP by the RINO establishment and 2) McCain lost because conservatives stayed at home. Neither one of these is true and re-imagining the past to make them so is really a sign of on-going wishcasting about the future.
Their thesis is that McCain was forced on the Republican electorate by the leaders of the party but then he went on to lose the election because conservatives were demoralized and didn't turn out. As Medved shows, the Republican establishment didn't want McCain and would have preferred Giuliani, Thompson, or Romney to McCain. Those candidates didn't measure up.
Because of the much larger overall turnout in 2008, this meant that far more self-identified conservatives (44,627,000) showed up at the polls for the McCain-Obama battle than in the prior duel between Mr. Bush and John Kerry (41,571,000).The reason McCain lost was because he lost the moderates in the middle. They went overwhelmingly for Obama.
Yet Another Reason Not to Fund UNESCO
Last week, international media reported that Syria – in the midst of bloody repression and conflict – had been elected to two human rights committees of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).Uh why does UNESCO even have a human rights committee much less two of them?UNESCO is the agency that recognized Palestinian statehood last month by allowing the Palestinian delegation to assume full membership–triggering an immediate withdrawal of UNESCO funding from the U.S. Congress.

The Ultralight Rifle Fishing Rod
Weighing in at just under a pound, the .22 caliber single-shot bolt-action rifle is not only light and easy to carry, but the use of aluminum and carbon fiber make it weather resistant too.No doubt there are better survival rifles and fishing rods out there but this is the best combo I've seen....The rifle breaks down into two main components in just a couple of seconds, making it easier to stash in a backpack. And with the addition of a reel screwed onto the pistol grip, and a rod that extends from the stock, you've got yourself another survival tool in the same $425 package.

15 Songs You Know, But Not Their Names
Woo hoo I scored a solid 10 out of 15 - mostly because I had to take Intro to Classical Music twice in college. The D I got the first time around was due to procrastination and a woman but mostly procrastination.
Really Awkward Fan Fiction
You can give someone pre-done characters and a filled out milieu but you just can't make them write decently. I shudder to even imagine what Twilight fanfic is like.

Why Musicians Aren't Taken Seriously Part MMLXXIV
Due to fears of spreading Mad Cow Disease the sales of certain animal tissues are now controlled and that could lead to a phase out of using beef gut for violin and cello strings.
Internationally acclaimed musicians using gut-string instruments include Viktoria Mullova, the London-based, Russian-born violinist. She said the end of the use of gut strings would be “terrible”.Musicians and librarians are constantly vying for the most overwrought pronouncements. Advantage musicians.“We wouldn’t be able to play music any more. I wouldn’t be able to play Bach, and we can’t live without Bach,” she added.
6 Terrifying Things Nobody Tells You About Donating Sperm
To a young guy with not much money, sperm donation seems too good to be true. It pays well (as we've pointed out before) and requires you to do nothing more than what you'd be doing anyway. And if you happen to help a childless couple along the way, that's just icing on the cake.No gingers need apply and yes there is contractually obligated fapping.Having actually been a sperm donor, I can say that you had better be prepared for a long haul. There are a lot of (horrifying) hoops to jump through, and then sperm banks expect you to masturbate like ... well, like it's your job.
And it's not an easy one.

In large measure, however, because McCain refused to seriously differentiate himself from Obama. They both believe in lower taxes (win wink nudge nudge), reducing spending (in theory), serious AGW regulations, keeping the welfare and regulatory state in place, etc, etc.

As for why Romney lost (as opposed to McCain winning): that would be Huckabee, whom no-one in the GOP outside evangelicals wanted, and who must have known that. This time the spoiler candidate seems to be Bachmann and she's fighting for the establishment.
Medved's larger point is that moderates swung to Obama. As for that, well, he's got me there. This is why I've given up on democracy.

Well, I made the trek out to Hillsdale, and listened to the Man talk. He did well. Made sense. No outright flubs, a couple hiccups here and there, and after a bit he had the crowd going.
He had a lot of content, some fluff and the expected patriotic support the military lines. All in all a good job. I thought I would get a chance to meet him, but that didn't happen, and I was not the only one who was a bit put off about that. A couple serious party hacks were also left out in the cold, and I do mean cold.
The trip back was a ton of Michigan fun. Snow, sleet, wind, nasty roads, and some very dumb dirvers, most of whom ended up in the median. Home safe now with a Sam Adams and some pizza.
I'm still a fan of Santorum, Bachman, Perry, Newt, and of course ABO.

It's a near future dystopia with your somewhat standard Brave Girl heroine. What's interesting is that the author is playing with some interesting ideas. Basically society is divided into five factions, each representing a virtue. However, things have looped around so that what was a virtue isn't. For example, those dedicated to abnegation are in charge of the government on the theory that since they are selfless, they won't be corrupt (as a hilarious aside it's set in Chicago so the concept of a non-corrupt Chicago political class is grand). However, since they're selfless, they don't understand why the rest of society would want things like more energy and cars and things like that. The brave have turned their initiation into a death match and things like that.
It's a bit of a cut above the standard YA fare and it's interesting to see where the author is going to go with it. Also there's the Grand Romance but considering that we're dealing with teenagers, that's going to happen. Overall, I really like it.

H.W.Bush won in 1988 on the Reagan coattails and Dukakis' incompetence- which the Bush team hammered him with. Bush didn't run a conservative campaign, but had the American public's goodwill to then conservative President Reagan to help him.
So you could say he "skated by" using conservatism rather than actively campaigning with a conservative message.

Wasn't Pandora's Box essentially a WMD from the gods to mortals because the Greek gods are jerks like that?
I always hated Greek mythology and it's the only one they teach in most schools. I liked Norse mythology better since Loki was the only one that made a habit of being obnoxious just because he had power and the humans didn't.

I really would hate to have to go around suspecting everybody, just as I imagine others would hate to have to wonder whether the cob-loggers have become comfortable enough with the tactics used to combat Raykon to now use them against people who've been posting here for years. "Don't sock regulars" used to be one of the prime directives here, but at least one of the people with the keys doesn't seem to feel that way anymore. I have a pretty good idea who it might be, but still have to wonder. (I know it isn't Ace, since he's man enough to tell people fuck-you to their faces.)
What's next, gentlemen, you gonna start posting my IP address too?
It's little wonder so many people have vanished from this site in recent months, and it's a shame, because the place used to be so much fun. AoSHQ was a place without purity tests, where nearly anything went, debate was encouraged, and posters and commenters alike were damned funny. It was a great little enclave of irreverent snarkery where everyone was (mostly) united in fucking with the Left, and all of this was a breath of fresh air in a conservative blogosphere that had been defined by purer-than-thou places like FreeRepublic, RedState, and HotAir. These days, unfortunately, AoSHQ is where you go to see the bloggers doing the Dems' oppo research on conservative candidates for them, cults of personality rule, fratricide is the order of the day, and anyone who doesn't like it is told to GTFO. It's a shame that people I met in these threads who became real-world friends don't want to hang around here anymore.
Yeah, I know, I need to leave if this place is no longer appealing to me. Don't worry; more people than I can count have gotten that exact message over the course of the last year, and now the threads are thick with inquiries of "whatever happened to _______?" and the once-mighty ONT chugs hard to get into the 500s every night. But I'd just like to know if support of the "wrong" conservative candidate around here, or any other straying from the reservation, really is now enough to get socked or rewritten by the cob-loggers. It would also be nice if whichever cob-logger has decided to start this shit would identify himself. 'Cause if the people with the keys can't be trusted even this far, then I'll come to the same conclusion so many others have; that I can find much better things to do with my time.

To borrow from wiki;
In fact, Plato's representation of Orpheus is that of a coward, as instead of choosing to die in order to be with the one he loved, he instead mocked the gods by trying to go to Hades and get her back alive. Since his love was not "true"—he did not want to die for love—he was actually punished by the gods, first by giving him only the apparition of his former wife in the underworld, and then by being killed by women.

We need to look at the 2012 election as such-
stop fighting for "swing states" we won in 2000 and 2008 and try to redraw the map.
Every successful party flip of the whitehouse saw a "flip" of states once considered the opposite of the way they went.
Ex:
2008: Virginia (NEVER a blue state in the previous 40 years) and Indiana.
2000: West Virginia (blue in 1988, 1980, 1992, 1996)- without its EVs Bush would have lost the 2000 election.
1992: California (flipped from its red status for the first time in a NON landslide election in almost half a century)
If there are no states you can't perceive flipping that had been going the opposite direction, you aren't going to win.
1980: The Solid South
1976: Ohio & The South
1968: Illinois, New Jersey, the Carolinas(from 1960/64)
1960: Industrial north, Texas
If the R is leading in Wisconsin, Maine, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Oregon, Washington, etc it is a good sign Obama will lose. But don't just bank on the once-red "purple" states.

I would disagree with that.
IMO, modern western thought is based primarily on three cultural traditions;
Judeo-Christian: Grace and Salvation, Equality
Roman: Honor, Duty, Patriotism
Greek: The pursuit of individual excellence, the pursuit of knowledge
So, take away Christian "hope" and yes the world is profoundly different, but I would not go as far as opposite...

I also don't remember anyone saying he was foisted on us as a candidate because of a elitist scheme. I remember him getting the nod because Huckabee destroyed Romney's campaign plan by winning in Iowa and Romney never really recovered after that. The other candidates all turned out to be duds because they didn't have the money or staff or strategy to win. Ideology had little or nothing to do with it.

Absolutely.
Medved started life as an agit-propping Leftist, claims to have turned right, but continues to agit-prop against anything that looks conservative. He's so bad that I look askance that anything and anyone associated with Salem Communication (the network that keeps him going despite trash ratings). Far too much water carrying for the Statist quo there. [that's not a typo]

Oh okay. Now I didn't nuke it. Someone else did for obvious reasons based on its content.
My comment was simply asking Undead, who I like and is normally a level headed guy, was posting something like that. I guess we all get pissed sometimes and politics have a way of bringing that out of us.

A man and his wife have gone to bed. After laying in bed for a few minutes, the man cuts a fart and says, "seven points." His wife rolls over and asks, "What in the world was that?" The man says, "Touchdown. I'm ahead 7 to nothing." A few minutes later, the wife lets one go and says, "Touchdown, tie score." After about ten minutes, the man farts again and says, "Touchdown, I'm ahead 14 to 7. Now starting to get into this, the wife quickly farts again and says, "Touchdown, tie score." The man strains really hard, but to no avail -- he can't fart. So not to be outdone by his wife, he gives it everything he has and strains real hard to get out just one more fart. Straining, the man tries so hard, he poops in the bed. The wife asks, "Now what in the world was that?"
The man replies, "Half-time, switch sides."

Conservative Myths about 2008
Not sure I buy Medved's latest attempt at retconning the "retconning."
1) He claims that "the establishment split its support among Mitt Romney, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani." Yet, he presents absolutely no evidence to back up this assertion beyond McCain's being "cut off by major GOP donors" (which is, in itself, not necessarily an accurate picture of who "the establishment" prefers, and in many ways actually SUPPORTS view that Republican conservative stalwarts, as opposed to the establishment, were not supportive of McCain).
2) He presents the fact that McCain ran ahead of Republicans running for Congress as evidence that McCain was actually pretty durn popular with conservatives. This is sort of apples and oranges, since Republican candidates for the presidency generally tend to run better than GOP congressional candidates due to more Dems being willing to crossover at the presidential level than the congressional level, where ties with unions and other Dem vote-socialising mechanisms are stronger.
In 1980, Reagan won 50.8% of the popular vote, but congressional GOP candidates only got 47.6%
In 1988, Bush got 53.4% of the votes cast, while congressional GOP canddiates got 45.3%
1992 and 1996 were skewed because of the Perot factor at the presidential level which had no comparable candidates at the congressional.
The only GOP presidential candidate since 1980 for whom the congressional vote for GOP has even been close (i.e. within 2%) to the presidential vote was Bush II, both years. Long story short, the fact that McCain ran ahead of congressional Republicans doesn't actually substantiate the point Medved is trying to make.
3) He relies upon exit polling data, which is well-known to be spurious. However, if the 34% of voters identifying as conservatives is nevertheless reasonably accurate, then that's an underperformance versus the 40% of voters who yearly identify as "conservative" in annual polls of ideological affinity.
4) Several of his arguments about individual losses by conservatives are either so ancient as to be irrelevant in the post-Reagan political landscape, or else leave out other relevant factors that play into the equation.
Does anyone really, credibly believe that Goldwater getting hammered by Johnson back in 1964, when America really was at the height of the "big government can do anything" mentality, and modern conservatism was actually a new phenomenon that was just being systematically postulated by people like Kirk, has any relevance to the political scene today?
Pointing to O'Donnell's loss in Delaware as an indicator of anything more than the fact that Delawareans are much more liberal than the country at large is ridiculous.
His point about Rand Paul and Mike Lee is somewhat silly. Lee actually only underperformed vs. McCain by 0.6%, which seems to me to be more statistical than anything else. Paul underperformed versus McCain by 1.7% - as a complete outsider against a reasonably popular, well-entrenched sitting statewide elected official. These are supposed to be evidence that conservatism can't hack it?
And while Medved points to Ken Buck's loss in Colorado as evidence that people want moderates rather than conservatives, the actual fact of the matter is that Buck OUTperformed McCain by 1.7% in the state.
In fact, there were quite a number of Senate races in 2010 where solid conservatives outperformed McCain's numbers in 2008:
South Carolina - DeMint (61.5%) vs. McCain (53.9%)
North Carolina - Burr (54.8%) vs. McCain (49.4%)
Pennsylvania - Toomey (51.0%) vs. McCain (44.2%)
Florida - Rubio (48.9%, in a three way race!) vs. McCain (48.1%)
Johnson - Johnson (51.9%) vs. McCain (42.3%)
New Hampshire - Ayotte (60.0%) vs. McCain (43.5%)
Shoot, even in Nevada, Angle outperformed McCain by 2%.
Sorry, Mike, but I'm not buying what you're selling.

I find on both sites - I notice it more on Goldstein's site since I'm old-school in the blogosphere - part of what they do to fill up the daily quota is to find something popular amongst the Right that is unpopular in the Left, and then snark mightily about how the Left cares so much about that silly thing. "Ceremonial Deism", back in 2002; "intelligent design" in 2009. Newdow then and Johnson now were such big sillies to care about these trifling matters! The Rightists who cared equally on the other side . . . as for them, Goldstein maintained a... polite silence.
This serves several purposes: the Rightist peanut-gallery guffaws mightily, the Left goes nuts, and the bloggers affect the air of being Above It All.
RS McCain additionally beats his chest a lot about Dixie. I have my own thoughts on the Lost Cause. They're not his thoughts, at least not such as he's shared with us. I'll just say that I don't think that "the South was right". McCain is smart and informed enough that I suspect he has read more of the true history than he is letting on. But he's got a blog to run.
Anyway. That's my beef with those two. I can't speak for Ace, obviously.

The whole "trying to find a new job without obviously volunteering to be layed-off " balancing act is rough. If it's not too nosy, would you rather keep this job if it's an option or do something different? I guess what I'm asking is if there's any particular prayer you'd like or anything.

Now they gotta mobilize and deploy in formation all over again.

In later stuff like Better Than Sex, the guy nailed the essence of Bill Clinton but like any leftie he liked to call conservatives Nazis etc. In a collection of his stories there is a great one contrasting Jean Claude Killy and OJ Simpson as flacks at the big Detroit Auto Show and also a trip to the Kentucky Derby.
BTW, he was pro Second Amendment even up to his last moment.

i skin them, salt the hide, then ship it to a friend to tan. that way i can keep them part of them forever since they are a little bigger than is easily cremated.
the rest goes to a haul away service. 180$ pisses me off i dont have the ducats to make a boarders ancient nag go away even if i just shoot him myself. i really wanna spend it on Xmas gifts instead.

I just don't see how hot wax would be all that stimulating, but I do understand that that is where the fetishy stuff comes in. It's all very interesting. You wonder what happens to people that they find hot wax arousing.
The tying up part is a little more understandable, but I should probably shut up now.

I'm down with getting tied up.
Best thing I ever read and something I absolutely intend to try (soon as I find a willing victim).
Tie woman's hand and feet to four corners of bed. Take long feather. Rub feather over her for long stretch of time just avoiding the major erogenous zones. Then, once she's begging for relief, give it a lick to see if she, uh...explodes with delight.
I read that somewhere. Sounds like a good idea to me.

before it faded to grey my hair was dark gingerbread auburn with red gold tips. never a proper brunette. SIgh. now its all colors including white. Its never been a proper color at all! Just brownish. I am the color of dirt trees and stone. Not peaches and cream like you, or roses like most pretty women.
beauty is in eye of beholder. my Central Asian clients would agree with you so i wont fight, but the usual american aesthetic says i am no beauty, merely striking looking.
i am far from angelic. Grimmy and mom (as well as the ex) would tell you i have a mean streak that betrays my khazar blood... its just well trained and reined in, and i can put on good manners.
And i can be well and truly selfish. Most artists are.

Well, as a straight guy......there might have been a time when I thought it might be sexy to be tied up.....but that was a while ago. I've put my heart in a satin-lined box and had it used as a foot-cushion, and that gets old really fast. While I still love everything about women as a class and my partner of over two decades specifically, I can't "let myself go" with such abandon.

"Oh and learn to type. If I had known how much of my later life would be spent pecking at a keyboard, I would have skipped computer programming in high school and taken typing instead."
Well, now you can use voice recognition software and not type.
But if you learn to type, do it on the Dvorak layout, not QWERTY (it's designed to slow the typist down so the mechanical keys don't jam). It's embedded in both Windows and MAC OS's so it's available regardless of OS.
Sometimes when I'm bored I go into the Apple store and change Safari so it uses the Dvork layout. Then I watch the confused looks on the customers and salespeople's faces.
