Overnight Open Thread - Boring Edition
— Maetenloch

Welcome to the boringest night of the week. Here's a video game and quiz to help keep you awake for a bit.
Play Katamari Damacy on Any Web Site

Even this one. Just copy and paste this url into the location bar on any site:

The Newsweek Quiz: Who was buried in GrantÂ’s tomb?
Also includes harder questions like "What happened at the Constitutional Convention?":

Take Question 2, for example, “What happened at the Constitutional Convention?” The answer (drum roll, please): the Founders wrote the Constitution (correct variant: the Constitution was written). Only 35% of respondents got it right. Even guessing should have yielded a much higher correct percentage than that.
You can take the quiz here.

CNNÂ’s Nancy Grace: Nuclear Physicist
Here she argues with meteorologist Bernie Rayno over whether the Fukushima radiation leaks pose any danger to California. Contrary to her implication I would trust the opinion of a meteorologist over any lawyer since they, unlike JDs, have to take actual math and science classes.

To be honest I've never cared for Grace, but after the Duke rape hoax fiasco her credibility on anything should be 0.00000.

Retro-Ace: Remembering Allah of Spades
I happened to be searching for something and came across this old, old thread. Good times, good times.

That's what I'm going to call the new blog. "Link Messiah."
Has it occurred to you that you're fucked if you teach Ace how to use an RSS feed?
Posted by: Michael on January 10, 2006 09:31 PM

On the other hand, I get maybe half the links from non-RSS sources. Ace will never find those. Too lazy.
Posted by: Allah on January 10, 2006 09:33 PM

Ace will never find those. Too lazy.
I wouldn't be so sure. Competition is a wonderful thing. Could get Ace to actually roll off the Thai hooker and read some shit.

The Triumph of Coal Marketing
Along with the mendacity of anti-nuclear activists, and the fantasy of unicorn-powered windmills.

For every person killed by nuclear power generation, 4,000 die due to coal, adjusted for the same amount of power produced... You might very well have excellent reasons to argue for one form over another. Not the point of this post. The question is: did you know about this chart? How does it resonate with you?

17 Notoriously Prickly Interview Subjects
I remember hearing about the infamous Billy Bob Thornton interview. Everyone has a bad day or two but when you're a consistent difficult interview, maybe you're just an asshole.

Hey What Ever Happened To That Japanese Nuclear Meltdown?
James Delingpole wonders what happened to the imminent meltdown that was going to doom, DOOM! the world just last week. Funny how a few bombs over Benghazi made that life-threatening crisis all go away.

Amazing, isnÂ’t it, what a little light military intervention can do to a nuclear crisis?

One minute, the world is facing nuclear meltdown armageddon to rank with – ooh, Three Mile Island at the very least, and quite possibly Chernobyl. A few (shockingly expensive) missile strikes over Benghazi and Tripoli later, though, and the Japanese nuclear crisis has all but vanished from the face of the earth.

Maybe we should start small wars more often. Or maybe – even better – the MSM could learn to start reporting on nuclear incidents like journalists instead of activists from Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth.

How Not To Get Your Ass Kicked by the Police
A PSA from the Chris Rock Show. Over 98% of police ass kickings could have been prevented if people had only followed this simple advice.

Boob Jobs Growing
In the last ten years breast enlargement surgeries are up by 40% with 300,000 women a year getting a boob boost. But other plastic surgeries are declining:

Several once-popular surgical procedures have declined in the past decade. They include:
* Liposuction: 203,106, down 43 percent.
* Nose jobs: 252,261, down 35 percent.
* Eyelid surgery: 208,764, down 36 percent.
* Face-lifts: 112,955, down 16 percent.

Many surgical procedures have been replaced by noninvasive treatments developed in the past decade. Some of the most popular noninvasive procedures last year, compared with the year 2000, include:
* Botox injections: 5.4 million, up 584 percent.
* Wrinkle fillers: 1.8 million, up 172 percent.
* Laser hair removal: 937,601, up 27 percent.

18 hi all
wow, looking at some of the answers that people put for that citizenship test is really depressing

for example:
What is the supreme law of the land?

and so what are the answers that some commenters are posting?

The Supreme Court!

and, this brilliant comment:

WOW thought we were a democracy which by definition pretty much blows the words "supreme law of the land" right out of the water (i hope.) so ok. I would guess the Constituion trumps any State laws or ... oh hell, i don't really know...

You could make the case that since the Constitution has been generally disregarded by at least two of the three branches at any point over the last hundred years, the "technically correct" answer isn't really the correct answer anymore.

Not saying this is good or right, of course...just that it is.

you could make that case, but I am using Occam's Razor on this one - seeing as how only 35% knew that the "Constitutional Convention" involved, say, drafting a constitution, given the choice between an explanation that relies on the respondents being so knowledgeable on current events that they give the smart, nuanced answer, or the explanation that relies on the respondents being dumb as rocks, I'm going with the latter

Which brings me a little pause.  If I'm an Assad, or an Ahmedinejad, and I know that even if I give up my WMD programs and renounce terrorism, I may still be attacked by a Sissypants Administration, looking for foreign policy cred, wouldn't the fate of Gaddafi encourage me to ramp up my WMDs programs even more to discourage an attack on my country?

he is taking our favorite Democrat Joe Scarborough ragging on the GOP being to blame for Ogabe's Libyan Adventure Pretty hard......

Ben reportin' on reality is harshing the lib's mellow so he reports on the voices in mika's head instead.

Sorry, I just hate Joe Scarborough soooo very much. i edited it and toned it down

I hate people who are successful because they tear down their supposed friends and allies.

Let's face it, if joe delcared he were a democrat he would disappear. No one would care.  It's like LGF, when he declared himself a lefty, all of the sudden his critizism of the Right wing didn't really hold the same power.

Scarborough has made a living off cutting his "ideological friends off at the knees".

I'm someone who values loyalty and Joe Scarborough is a traitorous to conservatism and the republican party. It just angers me so much.

You don't even need to watch his show. Whatever the issue of the day is you can be certain it is republicans fault.

I hate him even more now since it was rumored Cornyn wanted him to run for the Florida Senate seat against Nelson.

As little as I care about Libya's civil war I care even less about going in there and rebuilding their damn country and trying to make them into a democracy.

It is from Bald's Leechbook, written c. 900 in Winchester, Wessex. That would make it a product of the court of Alfred the Great.

What I think is most interesting is that they thought some sort of physical harm would come to men from female talkativeness. I wish Bald was more informative on that point.

it is the GOP's fault King Bury wants to live action roleplay bill Clinton's repsonse to Blackhawk Down.....

Joe's internal monologue goes something like this:

John kerry says this is NOT a war and Mummer K'Daffy is NOT the target

John Mccain and senor Grahmnesty are calling for Mummers' head.

Republicans are the war party.

now I am not Ziggy Froyd or nothin' but here in the real world John Boner et al did not force Chairman Ogabe to play "hide the ALCM" in brazil or libya.....

instead of discussing the toxic imagery of juggsy playing kickball and doing the macarena down in Brazil telling the Brazillians "I want YOU to drill the US or the golf of mexico anyway padrones!" while playing ALCM surprise he goes off on a rant about Cap fuckin' Weinberg?
Nah save it for the funny papers....

what do the years 1917, 1941, 1950, 1964, 1993-2001 and now 2011 all have in common?

The Boston Method is getting shitfaced before cruising the streets for hookers and coke and finally ramming your car into the US Capitol as the hooker does a reverse cowgirl on your stick shift.

180 #159, that's why they developed it. It works similarly to dialysis machine only with a much more complicated chemical filtering system. Since the liver can heal itself, they found that in cases of severe alcoholics, a surgical team could remove most of the damaged liver and then hook the patient up to the machine for a long time as their liver regrew. Otherwise such an operation would be fatal without a transplant. I assume it would work for cancer patients too. If the cancerous parts of the liver were removed, the machine could pick up the slack until the organ regrows. Of course this is a new development and I don't think they've really gotten past the initial trials with it. I'm sure there's probably a lot of complications and flaws with the machines and technique. But that's better than having no treatment beyond a transplant.

Morgenstern = Morning star = Lucifer

Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes..... at March 22, 2011 10:10 PM (sJTmU)

My middle-schooler is reading a series titled Bedeviled, where the young heroine's mom marries a guy named Lou Cipher.  (Get it?)  The young girl hates Lou.  So, playing along, I said to my daughter, She should tell him to go to H-E-double hockey sticks.  My daughter said, Oh, she does.  All the time.

There's another series out for middle schoolers titled Heck.  Here's the main blurb:  Quintessential good-kid Milton Fauster knows all about his sister Marlo's life of petty crime. So, when they are both killed in a freak marshmallow explosion, he isn't surprised that she doesn't qualify for Heaven, but he's shocked to find that he isn't going there either. They end up in Heck, an unearthly reform school that isn't quite Hell, but certainly not a place anyone would want to stay in "for all eternity—or until they turn 18, whichever comes first." Principal Bea "Elsa" Bubb figures that there is something irregular about Milton's soul contract and keeps a close eye on him. Milton, meanwhile, plans to escape. During a dreary class, he meets Virgil, who has a map of the Nine Circles of Heck...

Hell's a poppin' as far as reading material for kids goes.

Y'all may disagree with me,  but we're not the world's policeman and I'm tired of the ingratitude of the countries we do try to help.

If my son was in the armed services, I would not want him to die for a bunch of ungrateful Muslims who will set up a government based on Sharia law.

193 Quick thinking by a young martial artist:

Black belt needed: Teen's pants fall down during his martial arts routine to packed sports hall

...With one last twist they were down, leaving a rather red-faced Mr Stone standing in his boxer briefs.

'I kind of paused and looked down for a second,' said Mr Stone.

'But I thought I've trained for such a long time and was determined to finish.

'It was a do or die situation. And I decided to do it.'

After battling to get the pants over his sneakers Mr Stone whisked them off to the side and launched straight back into his routine in just his underwear and martial arts jacket.

I will.  I ordered some flavors for my e cig, they should be here any day now.  Hope that will help.  But I am just stressed right now.. I know it's an excuse..I don't go into my entire life and my problems here, you all have better things to do, but this is just a tough time right now, probably the hardest thing I have ever dealt with.  It's not just that (as if that isn't bad enough), it's many other things.  My few cigs a day give me pleasure and right now I need some pleasure.

Chris Rock is one of those mid/late 1990s "politically incorrect" comics, alongside Maher, Eminem, Kevin Smith and (although she wasn't as popular then) Cho.

Which is to say: Rock got popular during the days of Clinton Fatigue by being antiestablishment, and then he used that cachet in support of said establishment in the 2000s - by easy Bush-bashing and by support of the classic leftist pieties.

I suggest that anyone who cites Chris Rock on a blog like this be forced to sit through Head Of State, Obama propaganda before Obama.

1- Grace is still on TV? this sis a woman who's whole show is devoted to instantly finding the acussed guilty and not woning up when they are found innocent. the Duke case sure hurt her, but she didn't apologize at all for it. Plus, when Elizabeth Smart got on the show Smart felt creeped out by her and told her off on TV!!!

I still cannot believe that Julia Roberts won the Oscar for that role. As with all of her roles in recent years, there was no acting, just a costume change: Julie Roberts with brown hair, Julia Roberts in a wedding gown, Julie Roberts in a pushup bra.

And, if there was any truth to the movie at all, Ms. Brockovitch was by far the least likable person portrayed.

When you freeze frame over roberts or any of the majorites members face in that decision, they'll talk about how corporations even deserve free speech.

I spit my drink when I realized what the lefties were whining about. LOL. That decision stuck it to 'em.

335 Companies also try to settle reflexively - I've known companies who do it as a matter of policy even if it loses them money over time and the cases are BS.

After the kids died up in Bellingham they did a lot of retrofitting and safety improvements so in theory it is as safe as a pipeline can be. 351 I've been reading a blog called Diary Of Daedalus, it covers the lunacy that is the jazzman's site, I joined the blogosphere back in 08 when LGF started to change, it still amazes me as I've studied LGF's past how one man suddenly veered to the left just like that.

Well, he veered to the right just as suddenly. I don't know if it's still accessible, but if you can find the beginning of little green fuckwits it was mainly a blog about bikes and other crap from what i remember and then not long  after 9-11 he wrote a post saying he wasn't going to criticize Bush anymore. So not too surprising he would just as quickly revert back to the left.

Add in that his little love affair with chuckles approval had him yelling at US and Ace of Spades members over Kilgore trout spambombing his comments section with the N bomb and in essence handing over editorial oversight duties to BikeBoy the jazz flautist and you'll see why some of us think he is about as useful to sanity in politics as the french are in a world war.

Hmmm, the kids are studying Native Americans right now, I don't think I'll bring up that fact about the Osage Indians, TexasJew. It doesn't really fit the narrative.

Which is apparently to take all the really cool facts about the indians out of the books so that all that is left is boring politically correct drivel that puts the kids to sleep.

I mean, damn, when we studied the Indians, we studied the good stuff--the rites of passage that included hanging them from hooks in their backs. We studied the scalping and all that other stuff too.

Now it's all, oooo they ate from the land, and they respected the land, and they traded beads and cloth with each other and they lived in different kinds of houses.

I had relatives near Pawhuska back in the 80's and there were about a dozen huge oil storage tanks almost right next to their house, this was way out in the sticks. yeah the O'donnel threads.....*sigh*

KT spambombs the HA version of ONT and a patrol of us are rather forceful in telling him off, explaining that HA is not Chuckles' Little Abbatoir etc etc

AP instantly goes into 5 alarm squish mode throws us under the bus refuses to call out KT or CJ on their suddenly pious denunciation of HA thoughtcrime(that ONLY KT had done) and threatens us and starts badmouthing the HQ....

I've always been a guy with a foot in both ponds at that point.....so Ed and AP issue a vague "Michelle Obama and the kids et al are verboten" edict......

well a lot of posters asked for guidelines on what was allowed.....understand at this point AP especially is allowing their versions of Palin steele to go full Andy Sully on palin......

long story short I called Michelle "patricia Ewing needs to call her brother" resetsjust to push AP into banning me.....after he allowed the most hateful crap under the sun to be posted on palin.....

shit that would make Andy Sully blush.....

mongoloid womb resets and such.....

AP turned editorial oversight to Charles Johnson for a while and it irritated a lot of people....William Amos and others.

AP had no problem with Palinfest because the heat got him hits but he has a different standard for attacks on donks because it made him feel "not so fresh" on twitter,

If he had a mailinga ddress I'd have shipped him a case of masengil

562 eman, HA doesn't really ban for using the word revolution in general. though using it immediately throws your post into moderation. I do recall AP banning someone that used a filter evading version like rev0lution then gloating over dodging the filter.

I like HA and read there daily, though I post there rarely any more. I like posting here better. They are at least on the same side in stopping runaway government.

I see no sense in a blog war with them. We have much larger targets to aim at.

He was so awful. A Hollywood liberal's view of a preacher.

I liked the fact that it was largely filmed in Marfa and Alpine, out here in West Texas. The book was largely around LA.

567 574 TJ,

these guys were talking about the Okie fields, some California work, and stories they'd heard about the  Ohio/Pennsylvania fields....this was about ten years back and they looked late 60s so you figure what maybe 60 years ago was when they started...one of 'em had on a navy cap for what i think was a refueling ship....

anyway it just struck me.....

I've worked bio-remediation and on flight lines in a fod heavy potential missile and debris field.....and the stuff they were jawing over struck me as sporty....of course the grass may always be greener but the blood probably sounds redder on the other side of occupational fences and such.

I'm over it mostly.....

been months since I brought it up....that said AP was a little more zealous than a few bans and a lot of us who went to HA from CQ found his "alpha amongst betas" routine vis a vis Ed on moderation standards "funny"......

Does anyone remember this thread?

Ace told people that he was coming up on something like 1 million comments or something.  He mentioned that people thought that there should be some sort of prize for the 10 millionth commenter.

Ace responded thusly...

'You have been asking what you get for being the 1 millionth commenter is.  Well let me answer your question with another question.  What do I get?

Yeah, that's what I thought.'

Ace then proceeded to snark about how we could all dance together arround the bonfire of mad blog money.

It made me laugh.

I actually tried to look it up on Google for about 20 minutes two nights ago, but I failed miserably.

658 668 Man in orca's Wake,

Quint (Robert Shaw) - "Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.

Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Bosun's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist.

At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

704 Nukes Thorium build it all. I saw somewhere that there's a place in Iran with very high background radiation. Something like 9000mrem a year which is crazy. We only allow occupational exposure to 5000 mrem a year, which is still crazy high than what you usually will recieve. I think I got a rem(1000 mrem) or so in my time in the navy. Maybe a rem and a half. And I did dosing, surveys, and sampling!
