— Maetenloch Why Liberals Hate E-Cigarettes
Currently one of the most promising techniques for getting hard-core smokers to quit is weaning them onto e-cigarettes and then slowly lowering the amount of nicotine.
Reduces harm and doesn't produce any annoying smoke. Sounds great right?
Yet guess who would like to see them banned:
Though this was just a small pilot study, the results fit with other encouraging evidence and bolster hopes that these e-cigarettes could be the most effective tool yet for reducing the global death toll from smoking.Dennis Prager has long argued that anti-smoking zealotry was a manifestation of the inherent meanness of the left. And I used to think he was taking the point too far but in this case there really is no justification for banning e-cigs except wielding the power to deny others pleasure. But there’s a powerful group working against this innovation — and it’s not Big Tobacco. It’s a coalition of government officials and antismoking groups who have been warning about the dangers of e-cigarettes and trying to ban their sale.
...When it comes to nicotine, though, the abstinence forces tend to be more liberal, including Democratic officials at the state and national level who have been trying to stop the sale of e-cigarettes and ban their use in smoke-free places.

On Occupy L.A.:
I mean, come on, people. This is like a bad parody. It’s bad enough that kids today have no culture of their own — they’re still listening to the Beatles, the Stones, and a bunch of new groups from the seventies, for crying out loud. It would be as if we Boomers marched into battle against Daley’s pigs to the strains of Paul Robeson singing “Ol’ Man River” and Al Jolson’s “My Mammy,” both of which were huge in 1928.Well as one pundit pointed out the participants in #Occupy* aren't so much protesters as protest reenactors, aping the counter-culture styles of their grandparents.Really, it’s pathetic. At an age when they should be manufacturing their own pop music, their own movies (the sea of sequels and remakes continues unabated), their own fashions, their own outrage, what we get is a load of hand-me-down attitudes, tie-dyed and ready-to-wear. Because manufacturing anything would require, you know, work.

The Ultimate Rage Comic: 86th Birthday Rage
In case you aren't familiar with them rage comics are an internet thing. And this one is probably one of the most entertaining and moving one I've seen to date. It appeared on reddit and I can't vouch for the veracity of this story. But much of it has the ring of truth to it so I'm going to go with it. Sorry for the length.

How to Solve "Jewish" Math Problems
Back in the seventies, the mathematics department at the Soviet Union's Moscow State University (one of the most prestigious departments in the USSR at the time) used a special collection of math problems, informally referred to as "Jewish" problems or "coffins" ("coffin" problems translating roughly to "killer" problems in English), to keep Jewish students and other so-called "undesirables" out of the department. But over time students through word of mouth managed to build up a collection of answers to these 'jewish' problems. The problems were notoriously difficult to solve, but had seemingly simple solutions, allowing the department to avoid criticism of the wait-a-minute-what-you're-doing-is-completely-unethical variety.
Airline To Offer In-Flight Pr0n
The boss of budget airline Ryanair wants to launch a pay-per-view pornography service for passengers to watch during flights, it has been claimed.genghis says he can think of no downside but I can think of at least two: 1) the Mile High Club - Solo Division is going to become far less exclusive and 2) airlines will probably start charging for tissues and blankets.Ryanair chief Michael O'Leary said he hopes to launch an app for the airline where travellers can watch sex scenes on their iPads or smartphones while in the air.

Same with all drugs, and it's not just limited to those on the left. And what about sex in whatever form and guise? It's usually conservatives who have an issue about that.

Go to a mall where they have an e-cig kiosk and try them. If you like them, then go buy them online. Much cheaper and better than the ones at the mall but at least you can try them out before spending $50-$75 bucks. Ace got me to try the Totally Wicked Titan e-cig with his post some 2.5 years ago about 'em. Highly recommend them if you want to quit.

The fluorescence doesn't look right and I am unaware of any additive that is in Mountain Dew that would glow when incubated with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda (else you could do this with all kinds of carbonated soda).
My guess is that the guy added some type of glow solution off-camera.
You could try it yourself and see if you get the same effect, but in all likeliness, you'd just be wasting a bottle of Mountain Dew.

Ben, they take a little getting used to but not bad. I use the Totally Wicked Titan 510 but I am looking to step up to the Tornado or one of the newer models. You have to make sure you have at least one charged up spare battery and it takes some time to get the right percentage of nicotine solution to get your buzz. I started out with 12mg but I am using 18mg. I did try 24mg but holy shit that got me too buzzed. You do need to clean the atomizer periodically and they last anywhere from 1 to 6 weeks. Batteries can last a few months before they wear out. Cartridges you should swap out after about 2 weeks. It's a trial and error process and something that you just get used to.

Sounds like the ecigs that come with the cartridge preloaded on the atomizer. I don't like those as you can't refill them with nicotine solution. The preloaded cartridge/atomizers are more expensive. Much cheaper to get the kind where you can refresh the cartridge.

Kratos, just looking up basic stuff, it looks like the claim for glowing mountain dew would be the phenylketonurics and the hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide reacting with a diphenyl oxalate is the reaction for glow sticks.
Of course the phenylketonurics are also in pepsi. So I would think its crap.

I want to get him one. Money is no object, I'd be willing to pay as much as I had to if it got him to stop smoking.
Do you suggest any specific e-cigs or brands.
I got the Volt- kinda the 2nd generation of e-cigs. It's the only one I've tried, but the reviews were good and I agree. Decent battery life (especially with the longer battery), easy to use. You can either buy new cartridges or refill them with the fluid, which is cheaper. I've found you can refill them many times.
The only real maintenance is charging them and refilling the cartridges if you go that route.
I quit smoking in two days after getting it- then only because that's how long it took to finish off the pack I had left. They're not exactly the same as regular cigs, but a good substitute.
If you get the Volt, don't bother with the recharging case with a battery in it- it's not worth it. I'd recommend spending the extra $1 each for the longer batteries; two is enough if you remember to charge them.
No affiliation, blah blah blah.

Several of my friends have had kids in the after school choir at my son's school. In past years they have performed a holiday concert, the usual assortment of generic Christmas songs, Hannukah songs, and a Kwanzaa song thrown in there to get away with singing a Christmas song. This year's song line-up is:
Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
Viva la Vida by ColdPlay
Young Blood by Naked & Famous
Lost in My Mind by the Head and the Heart
These are 3rd-6th graders singing this music. And they will perform them in front of the whole school--Kindergarten included. As my son said, upon hearing one of the songs "that is so inappropriate"

Yeah, its one of those things that if you know the chemistry for glowsticks it seems plausible. Peroxide and a phenyl and some dye? "Well Mountain Dew has phenyls and dyes so maybe it would work?"

Well, to be precise, my full statement was:
"I see no possible downside to this. Aside from the obvious entertainment value it'll most likely drive people with small children and screaming babies to patronize other, non-smutty, airlines. Once this proves a stunning success, I predict Ryanair will take the next logical step and provide in-flight stripper and lap-dance services. After all, the flight attendents do seem to have a lot of free time on their hands between meal services. The FAA might have some initial safety concerns about where to locate the stripper poles, but I'm sure there's a workaround for that."
But Maet and his legal mouthpiece, Ms. Allred, chose to release only that portion of my statement which would bolster their case. I stand by my claim that Ryanair's potential actions will result in nothing short of awesomeness and will offer additional proof of that in comments to come.

Sure thing. If enough people get on the e-cig bandwagon, it'll be that much more difficult to ban them.
One thing I forgot- for someone trying to quit smoking (and I'm convinced that e-cigs are the easiest way to do so after using them), get the 24mg (strongest) cartridges / filters or fluid. If desired, you can cut down the nicotine level later.

If it was some other airline than Ryanair, I'd be thinking that you could ignore the porn on the in-flight entertainment. Since it's Ryanair, though, I immediately thought of stewardesses announcing, "ok, now it's rows 20 to 23 that are being filmed" after coming by those rows to hand out lube and sex toys and set up cameras.

There's no update on the missing boy here, but the story keeps getting fishier. Apparently no one has seen the boy for at least 2 weeks. A neighbor says she saw the boy about 2 weeks ago but not since then. And, the mom is claiming that she was on that particular road that early in the morning because the he was sick and she was taking him to the emergency room.
Soooo, you leave a sick 2 year old alone in a car for an hour? Yeah, right.
Also, the dad was granted visitation rights on Thursday in mediation and the mom initially agreed to it, but began having second thoughts the next day.

Okay, the short version: I quit smoking last April after 30 years of a pack a day habit. What did it was simply making the decision to not smoke tobacco. I didn't have to quit the habit, and I didn't have to beat nicotine because I got an e cig. It was a cakewalk. I'm weaning myself off the nicotine now; started with 24mg nicotine liquid, and now I'm down to 6mg.
I've been through several devices, as most people do early on, but like many people I've settled on what seems to be the gold standard of e cig products: made by a Chinese manufacturer called Joye. My particular model is called the "Ego," but also popular is one called their 510. Wicked's products are actually relabeled Joye devices.
I go through an online supplier called MadVapes. Great service, for what it's worth. I recommend searching for them online. Also worthwhile would be spending a bit of time on a forum like this one: http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com. You'll learn a lot. My preferred setup is the Joye Ego battery with a "passthru" mini-usb connection to hook up to my computer (charges while using!) and a mega-sized cartomizer. I tried the tanks, but gave up after lots of problems with the wicks in the atomizers. It's complicated...
Just remember: e cigs wear out. Batteries are only good for 3 months or so, and atomizers probably need to be replaced every week or two. No big deal...it's still a heck of a lot cheaper than tobacco.

RE: stuff stolen, rapes, drug deals gone bad
No, no, no. You cannot have a collectiveÂ…and then go looking for YOUR sleping bag. In socialism, debasement of self for the cause is an honor, so lay back and take one for the greater good. Think of Lenin/Marx. They who work hardest are the most satisfied.
How are we gonna have total equality unless we all dress the same, think the same, talk the same, donÂ’t work, only drum the same, stink the same etc..How do you pick a partner if even 1 person is different from the rest? Who are you to be attracted to someone because of their eye color/shape? ArenÂ’t you then denying your bod to others? Does that make everyone else ugly, you judgemental bitch! Procreate for the movement, so ya canÂ’t be a lez, NTTIAWWT, your rules toots..

This is a perfect example of how one "Oh, shit!" can negate a thousand+ "Atta boys!" although in this example, JoePa's mistake is significantly worse than one of a simple oversight.
I've heard some apologists too and I just brushed them off, as I was too sick to even discuss the matter. This is a very black and white issue. I was talking to some of my friends last night (some of them PSU almuni) and I told them if I ever found out someone I knew "showered" with kids like that, they'd better hope I only call the cops out of them - I'd be tempted to beat them within an inch of their lives (yeah, yeah, Internet tough guy rhetoric, but you know what I mean).

As an aside, and ignoring any questions about the actual validity of religion, why is it that liberals refuse to ask themselves what the purpose of religion is in human culture? There is a well know reason it has been ubiquitous until now...

There's a title game this year. There will never be co-champions in the Big Ten again thanks to you cornfuckers
There are also 3 games left and if Ohio State wins out, which means beating PSU, and Penn loses one other game that should put OSU in the title game instead since it would be a 3 way tie in the division with OSU holding victories over PSU and WIS.
At least that's how I see it when looking at the standings. Maybe they've got some bullshit rule like the Big 12 did about how 3 way ties get broken by BCS ranking. But to me 3 two loss teams and one having victories over both of the other two should determine the division leader.

It is my right to be uncommon - if I can.
I seek opportunity - not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me.
I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed.
I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia.
I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any master nor bend to any threat.
It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act for myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say, this I have done.
All this is what it means to be an American.

Yup, that was On Deadly Ground.
That movie is legendary because not only did it star Seagal, but it was also directed by him. Also, in the "director's cut" of On Deadly Ground, there was supposed to be a 10 minute diatribe by Seagal on the evils of the oil industry but thankfully the producers cut the length of the original rant by 2/3rd. Perhaps that original cut is out there on the net somewhere...

With all due respect, I can't help but think your weird, angry reaction here is due to the fact that Cain is looking worse and worse and guiltier and guiltier and it's going to hurt you too much to concede that. You're taking this so personally -- far more personally than you accuse Ace of taking it. Just my assessment. It almost sounds like you have some axe to grind with the subject of sexual harassment specifically, like it affected your life in the past or something, I dunno.
Just accept the fact that it's going to keep getting worse for him, it's newsworthy, and people who can see the incredibly obvious are going to pile on him for being (in all likelihood -- and no, I don't have to suspend my judgment merely because the allegations are 'technically unproven' even though they're overwhelmingly likely to be true) a woman-humping, adulterous sleazebag.
But hey, don't tell me to fuck off for posting news, man.

Well, that and the public union labor law was different from Wisco's which deftly kept the police and firefighters alone. Ohio's statute applied to all public sector unions, including police and fire and the dems scared the living crap out of people - or that's the report I heard.

"And I used to think he was taking the point too far but in this case there really is no justification for banning e-cigs except wielding the power to deny others pleasure."
Well of course.
The State cannot tolerate challenges to its supremacy, particularly in the areas of dispensing pleasure and pain.
That's why, despite wallowing in sexual excess, and indulging in numerous sexual paraphilias, Marxist ideology always requires the suppression of any and all drug use or sex beyond procreation.
I thought everyone knew that.

I will speculate that those speculating on Ace's mental state are more reacting to the fervour of Ace's statements here, not to their substance.

With all due respect -- and I'm not snarking or insulting here, I'm actually trying to engage in good faith -- are you aware of how I arrived at my position? As recently as one month ago I was a non-Romney person. When Perry got into the race, I was on the Perrywagon. I defended him here on the dumb Gardasil issue (still do!) and even tried to spin the whole illegal-tuition/"heartless" issue for him by pointing out that it wasn't the worst position to have staked out in the general election. I only gave up on him after several terrible debate performances in a row convinced me he would be made mincemeat of in the general election. Then I looked more closely at his record in Texas and found that it wasn't really all it had been cracked up to be.
It's true that I never HATED Romney with the hatred of a thousand suns the way many here do -- and I thought that the constant attacks on him here and elsewhere, many of which struck me as distortionary and unfair, were bad for us on the whole given the strong possibility he might end up our nominee -- but I only decided to back him as my choice by default, by process of elimination. After Perry collapsed, it was extremely easy for me to run down the list of the rest of the candidates -- Cain, Gingrich, Bachmann, etc. -- and realize that not a single one of them was remotely capable of winning in 2012 for a number of reasons, and that this left Romney as the only possible choice.
Given that I made that calculation is it any surprise that, now that I've decided Romney is the only possible default choice, I would deign to defend him against what I consider some of the more over-the-top attacks against him around here? I don't pretend he doesn't have baggage. I don't pretend the flip-flops don't exist in his past. I do often try to point out that his actual RECORD as Governor isn't nearly the unrelieved liberal shitshow that so many here like to make it out to be, that in a lot of ways he was doing the best he possibly could under amazingly inhospitable political circumstances in MA.
And this makes me a shill? The term "shill" implies with its use a connotation of intellectual dishonesty, of deceit and trickery. It's insulting because it assumes bad faith on the part of the person you label with it. But on your logic anyone who speaks up in favor of a particular candidate is now a "shill."
Maybe you're just tossing around the word carelessly, because hey it's the internet and it's easy to talk tough to people you've never met. I'm guilty of that myself sometimes too. (Hell, I'm guilty of that a LOT.) But it really is unfair to me and to anyone else who deigns to support a candidate that you happen to disapprove of.

Can't get by with just one. Takes several trips so you gotta make some choices.
Here's an idea of scale. This map isn't just right, but it's close enough.
There's a couple great Canadian trips, too. The loop up past Calgary/Edmonton over to Jasper, into the Klondike and back south on the Cassiar Highway is a great trip. Gets you near AK, but not over the border.
The AK State Ferry runs from Bellingham, WA to Skagway -- great trip, if you take your car on the Ferry, you can drive from Skagway up to Whitehorse and backtrack thru Canada either thru Jasper, Banff, or the Cassiar ---
and several more -- all nice 2 week ventures.
There are also a lot of cruise lines that make the same run as the Ferry, and some of them go up to Seward -- from there, a couple more 2 week loops are in the works from there.

I haven't stepped one foot in the actual city of chicago since bukkaki obama became president. It is a pretty cool city though, I did have fun when I went there. I like that unlike NYC you don't see steam rising up from the street. lol

Winter is a risk for that reason, you're right. Day in day out snow gets handled fine but if a real blizzard blows through, O'Hare and Midway shut down.

that was kinda my point about the antlers. Moose grow 'em every year -- just to get laid. Bears will kill their own kids -- just to get laid. Some insects get killed and eaten -- just to get laid. Almost all of the mammals will fight intensely, maybe even until dead -- just to get laid.
And in the U.S., if some guy offends some female 'cuz he's a clod one even one ocassion, and it's a huge friggin' crisis. I think we have all lost our little puddy minds. Any guy who has tried more than 4 times has been a complete doofus at least once. BFD.

I was out there 2-3 februarys ago and there was a wild ass snowy wind. I was in a hotel room and I had the slider on the balcony opened about a foot because I was smoking. I made the mistake of cracking the front door open and the wind sucked the curtains on the slider right out. lol

But I remember driving home from work listening to the radio, when they said that today was the first day where it was above freezing in 3 months. Snow that falls in probably another two weeks, will literally be here until April or May.
Shocking fact for a Southern Boy.

It varies, I swear one january just a few years ago was filled with 60 degree days. Last winter was a bitch, a few good 1-2 foot snow storms. I would say the average cold is in the low 30's, sometimes for a week or so it will go high teens or 20'sm but last winter it was real cold for weeks. Today it was almost 70, last few days was 50's. I guess winter don't really kick in hard until december, and even then its not real bad. Feburary can be brutal.

I like it out there. I have friends in nappervile, crystal lake, mundelein, and a few other places. Usually I go out there because my best chick friend in the world is out there, so I go there to visit her. Every time I build a guitar for myself I'll do a pair and she gets the other one. I have one ready for her, so its another reason to visit. I'll just bring it on the plane.
