Out of the Time Capsule: Chris Farley Does Newt

From waaay back in 1995. An entirely different world yet in some ways it still feels like yesterday with a slightly updated cast.

On April 4, 1995, four days after Tommy Boy premiered, Chris Farley crashed a meeting of the House Republican Conference. The SNL star stormed into the meeting in full Gingrich get-up to address the crowd.
And wouldn't you agree that both Boehner and Gingrich have aged remarkably well when you compare them to themselves 15 years ago.

But just remember that many of the same people cheering Newt in this video would also attempt to oust him from the speakership within two years and weren't sorry at all to see him leave the House only four years later.

We're supposed to be seeing a new and improved Newt 2.0 in 2012, but I and others have our doubts.

[and yes here I preemptively condemn my own traitorous RINO nature]

The Japanese: They Like Us, They Really Really Like Us
As the US becomes less popular around the globe despite having elected The One that the world swooned over just a scant three years ago, it's always good to hear a bit of good news. And according to a recent poll 82% of the Japanese people now have a favorable impression of the US, an all-time high.

Local news outlets said the results reflected the good will created here by Operation Tomodachi, or “friend,” in which 20,000 American military personnel members and 20 warships helped with rescue and relief operations after the deadly earthquake and tsunami on March 11. The reports also cited Japan’s insecurities about the rise of neighboring China, which many Japanese look to the United States, and its large military presence in Japan, to keep in check.
The US military gave a lot of support to the Japan in the aftermath of the tsunami and this has not been forgotten.

Where Do Doctors Choose To Die?
Answer: As far as possible away from a hospital.

Guys who have seen it a thousand times donÂ’t want any part of modern medicineÂ’s lurid pull-out-all-the-stops end-of-life snuff theater. (Also, people who opt for home hospice over ICU care live longer, on average, with a much higher quality of life. Go figure).

Something the article didn’t make clear — from my experience of medical people (and I have a few in the family), if a condition is curable or even satisfactorily treatable, they’ll grab all the modern medicine they can get. They aren’t anti-medicine. They’re anti-the-horrible-things-we-do-to-the-hopeless-as-they-fade-away.

This matches what I've heard from ER nurses and doctors I've known personally. Generally they hate the things they're forced to do to keep the dying alive for another few hours - breaking every bone in an old man's chest during CPR, having to painfully insert tubes into every single orifice of a terminal cancer patient in agony, etc - but if they did any less they'd be sued into oblivion and/or put into jail. It's telling that almost every single medical professional I know has a DNR on file.

Argentina Blockading the Falklands?
Argentina is now claiming jurisdiction over the waters around the Falklands Islands and intercepting British-licensed fishing ships attempting to enter.

In the latest interception, Argentine naval commanders told the Spanish vessels they were in violation of a blockade of sea channels to the Falklands.

The trawlermen confirmed they had faced increased pressure in the past three months, with 12 boats stopped and threatened with fines.

Buenos Aires’s ambassador to Spain said the seas around the Falklands were ‘an integral part of the Argentine territory’ and in a letter to Spanish fishing groups he said his country was ‘duty bound to put an end to all those illegal fishing activities’.

The Falklands government issues licences to vessels wanting to fish inside the 200-mile maritime zone around the islands.

No doubt the Brits will send one of their carriers down there and sort this all out - oh wait - they don't have any carriers anymore. Oh well.

One of the real problems we face as a society is that we've given the government power to do pretty much ANYTHING and yet we've got a critical mass of voters that are willfully ignorant.

Great potential conflict for me here.  I've vowed to abstain from political threads but the ONT's the only place I have time to play.

So, I'll go for the end-of-life bit.  I think the hospital/hospice decision might be hinged on the mental well-being of the patient.  My mom suffered from dementia and really didn't know where she was.  As a total invalid, Dad couldn't take care of her at home so staying at the hospital to the end (it came pretty quickly) worked well.

52 As for Rowan Williams, dealing with him is easy. Simply deny that he is an archbishop, and deny that his organisation is a Christian denomination. He's nobody; he's a hack, and his congregation is deluding itself.

There are several Orthodox communions with a British presence, not to mention the Catholic Church itself. I understand that even the Anglicans have a few (African-based) churches they can affiliate with.

You are so right.  I notice it all the time and make comparisons to days gone by.  I was at an arena on Saturday to see an orchestra concert.  It's very chilly here and there were several women wearing dirty old flip flops.  One girl on the food court level walked around barefoot, with her feet showing obvious signs of floor filth.  Last night, my son performed in his 9th grade orchestra concert.  One girl, in the 14 year old range, had a double piercing on her bottom lip.  One big, fat stud on each side.  She was overweight, sloppy, loud and incredibly un-ladylike.  I long for the days of Heddy Lamar again where women acted, looked and dressed like they had some self-respect.

I agree completely.  I didn't want my post to turn into an essay, but this year my Dad also ran out the string.  Lung cancer, untreatable.  Just about as soon as he knew it couldn't be fixed, he went to his house.  Luckily for him, my sister was able to move there and took care of him until the last couple of weeks when a local hospice association came in to help.  They are truly angels on earth.  He went easy in his own bed after spending the best time possible with all his kids.

True.  They want to look like adults without actually doing the work.  Of course, they end up looking stupid and childish.

It's part of the reason that I like the tango community; they're generally older and financially well off, so they dress and act like adults.

There's nothing wrong with jeans and a sweater as casual wear, especially with a nice pair of boots.  The key to dressing well is to find stuff that fits, that is clean and neat, and that is generally reserved in taste.  Most people fail all three.

178 So I've lost track.  Are you going to do a traditional postdoc or were you thinking of enlisting now that you are done?

Traditional postdoc, at least for now.  I basically want to "lie low" and reevaluate my situation after a few years.  Doing the whole "Outbreak" thing is a long-term goal.  Fortunately to achieve this goal, I don't have to do it right now and it might be preferring to expand my skill set a bit now.  As somebody from Merck told me last week, "now is a great time to train".

Eh, i don't know, i got a pair of Lees from Wal Mart a while back because they were around $12 and they were way too loose in the caboose. I get that they wanted to make them roomy, but these were regular fit and it was like they were 5 sizes bigger in the ass area than the rest of the jeans.

About 10 years ago I was travelling with a business partner, and he decided that he was going to wear shorts and a tshirt to fly while I was wearing a suit. The meetings were in Vegas, at Caesar's Palace check in he was given his single room, I got a suite, for the single room price. A suite at CP is very sweet.

Also, whenever there is a problem flying, when you go to the counter in a coat and tie, they think you are travelling on business, so you get some special attention. My wife and I dress up whenever we travel by plane.

258 218 Ok, so it appears that the only women left on match.com are of the SWPL variety.  At least for the Denver area.  Goody.

This is why I left okCupid. (There were other reasons, but this was what led to it all.)

Every female from Estes Park to Denver - and I'm talking in their 30s - was still in college working toward that useless degree; they were all well-traveled, they all claimed to be intelligent, and they all believed strongly in the environment and in social justice. Since the majors they were taking were not in the "math" or "business" sideline, I call bullshit on the Boulder Grrrlz' ineffable wisdom. I am in my 30s too and I can smell this shit out. They wanted Pussywhipped Sugar Daddy to feel guilty about making money, and to assuage that guilt by supporting their worthless and extravagant lifestyles.

Around Fort Collins the women started to get sensible again, but then I tried driving there [from Boulder]. It takes about an hour.

264 Always liked Colorado. Youngest daughter was married in the Sunrise Ampitheater in Boulder. Scary road up to the top, though.

Mine (youngest) got married in Moab.

Wedding party had to hike in 2 miles.

No reverend.  Everybody just believed they'd honor the vows.
(They did accidentally make it legal on my birthday with the judge, a week before, though, I've since discovered)

265 What many Republicans don't get is that Speaker Newt is basically a conservative southern democrat, as the term was understood, capitalized, 40 or 50 years ago, sans the racism. The racism is why many switched (but not, for example, Sen. half-bright, or Sen. Gore). Almost none of you play the combinatorics, but some of the current Commie bitches trying to kill us do: shift everything to the Stalin Left, and you guarantee most of the so-called opposition will still not work to stop the ex-Judenrat/fags. They oppos are too busy trying to stake out the middle turf. You bitches, you effin' rinos and fags! We rattlers will not be defeated, we'll not be seized, we'll give you, like Leon in that masterpiece by Luc Besson, the firing pin as our dying gesture, before we give up one sacred cubic centimeter of our Freedom. You effin' statists! My freedom, the freedom of my children, the freedom of untold generations to come, cannot be traded for even a single draft card, a single Union Army trying to do God's work. We only volunteer, bitch. You can't discount my death, my charity. If you don't get this, and you try to flex on us, you'll go down, bloody, and twitching. I personally guarantee it.

He is being asked about the need for legislation barring insider trading by members of Congress. Insider trading kingpin Spencer Bachus (R) was the first to ask a question, and THEN banking scandal queen Maxine Waters (D) read a question word for word from a piece of paper. A question she obviously had a staffer do the heavy lifting on. I'm thinking, my God, the foxes are guarding the hen house.

It's telling to me that the closer people have worked with him, the less they're enamored and certain he's all that conservative. Even if you were fat, and plenty of people were, they had the modesty to present themselves in the best light: Dresses, coiffed hair, decent shoes----even the Depression generation...A hair-cut, shaven, sports-coats for men. There was a segment on Seinfield about the attractiveness of most people and the joke was, "Have you been to the DMV?". Well, we all have. Look around. Comfort is the rage unless you are still a young lass, then you go all-out to look, I don't know what. I still can't help but stare at nose piercings and lower lip studs. And the tattoos; all over their arms, faces, heads, backs, legs, ankles, feet, fingers. Why?

430 423 thanks, buzzion. I have had HP concerns, as well. Actually, I was leaning towards something like a Walmart Acer (Pentium / cheap; we have an Acer laptop for the kids that has seen all kinds of un-imaginable abuse and it's 'strong, like bull') and a big honkin' external monitor.

Posted by: AltonJackson at December 06, 2011 11:57 PM (JMmQ9)

I bought an Acer recently from Wal-mart.  Big fucker.  Actually has a real number pad on it.  Has an AMD processor though but oh well.  I must say that I hate the placement of USB ports on laptops now.  My Dell had two in the back and two on the side you would set a mouse but they were far enough back that having stuff hooked in won't get in the way.    The Acer has one on the left side, and 2 on the right, but right up front.  Had to go and get a wireless mouse that has the low profile usb hook up since my old wireless had the 2.5" usb receiver that would always be in the way.

The Pentium brand has a very different place in Intel's product line than it once did. The Pentiums now occupy the low-end category once branded as Celeron. They're versions of the current chips with reduced cache or lacking certain features that are considered non-essential for the bargain seekers.

Right now, the low-end but not compromised model from Intel for a regular laptop is the Core i3. These are dual core with two different levels of graphics hardware offered as another cost item. Given the choice, you want HD3000 over HD2000 for the GPU. Somewhat better better machines will have a discrete Nvidia or ATI (AMD) GPU with some performance advantages that might be  meaningless for your use.

Moving up from there take you into Core i5 machines. Confusingly, this includes both dual and quad-core processors.

For the money, the AMD Fusion products, a combined CPU and GPU that AMD calls an APU (Application Processing Unit is the rather meaningless wording behind the acronym) can be quite effective. If you aren't doing anything demanding it's hard to tell the difference and the GPU is significantly better than the current Intel offering.

Eat it or not." "No meat?" "Nope, Sorry" "OMG this is delicious!" "Heh. Glad you like it! Actually, it's even more tasty than even *I* thought it would be". "Is there any more?" "Unfortunately, no". "You didn't turn me vegetarian or anything, did you?" "No, Dad. Between the rice and the zucchinni, I'm pretty sure enough olive oil was used to plug up a smallish artery in an emergency. Well, the southerners had developed a whole ideology designed to justify their "peculiar practice," so it is unlikely that they would have agreed to be bought out, the northerners weren't all that interested in helping the slaves when it meant actually doing something themselves instead of just excoriating southerners from a distance (they didn't actually like blacks, and their refusal to take in black refugees may have an important factor in Lincoln's decision to eliminate slavery completely in the south), and the war didn't initially begin over slavery in the first place, at least for the north.

502 Well, looking at it from an agricultural point of view, I am not sure how they could have gotten labor to replace the slaves back then. Hell, you can't even get people to work fields now in many places. The local people had their own farms to work, not sure if they'd have been willing to go work someone else's land at the cost of letting their own go...what would be the point?

And what would the  plantation owners have reinvested in?

507 The problem I see is, the slave-owners at that point are still trying to run their businesses. So, they'd probably take the money the gubmint paid them for their former slaves and buy new ones. They were just too used to that particular paradigm right then. I think they probably had to be forced out of it by the Civil War.

Posted by: Genetic Tunder at December 07, 2011 12:45 AM (vQfJ3)

Well, no one was importing slaves anymore (and I believe the slave-trading business was actually looked down upon even in the South by the mid-19th century, at least as it meant importing new ones), so if they had bought out ALL the slaves at one time the ex-owners would have had to use hired labor or go out of business.

Had such a thing occurred, the "freed" slaves would likely have been immediately co-opted into some form of indentured servitude.  The conditions necessary for them to really integrate into society as true participants, even at the very limited levels which were allowed post-emancipation, did not exist.  Bloodshed and overturning of the old order was required, even if the lot of the slaves themselves was not the primary concern of Lincoln or the Union at the time.  If you think about it, the buyout idea is like "cash for clunkers", but with people.  The unintended consequences would have been horrifying, and could have perpetuated a form of "slavery-lite" worse than what was seen during reconstruction (and for immigrants throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries).

They have just enough water, and just enough sugar, to brown up very nicely all by their lonesome and give off a "popcorn" smell. I think that you *might be* confounding the steamed wedges and wheels of "yellow and green squash" served to you in a cafeteria with actual zuchinni. The non-slave states knew what they were getting into when they signed the constitution and it is not really fair to try and change the deal unless both parties agree.

i keep an eye on it and see when its done. Sometimes it bears watching but this is so simple and delicious that you wont believe theres no meat in it!

Serve on tortillas with cheese and sour cream.

That looks like a great food / BBQ tour...NC mustard style, a little SC low country seafood, GA red sauce, AL white sauce, LA, where everything they make is good (dear god, how everyone in NOLA isn't 500 pounds amazes me), TN as a BBQ melting pot, AR to make all the other places look even better, and then TX for beef BBQ.  Kudos to skipping St. Louis and Kansas City - good BBQ does not involve ketchup.

Order the hot, and you'll see God, maybe.  You'll certainly be praying for salvation.

Just be ready to wait...they open when they want, and they'll get to your order when they feel like it.  It's all part of the experience.  The neighborhood is not the best, so if you ever get the chance to visit, daylight hours after the lunch rush are best.

The best part is the end of the meal, with the bread - every piece of chicken is served on a slice of plain old white bread that soaks up all the spice and grease.  There is no better purpose for a slice of bread, no higher calling, than soaking up that wonderfulness.

Too many people here in Mid-TN use the phrase "Memphrica", which has obvious racial connotations, and doesn't really explain the full awfulness of Memphis.  "Memphidishu" is my favorite because it indicts the populace, of all colors, who vote for the corrupt and awful leaders who've been destroying the city and lining their pockets (Ford family, as in Harold Ford, for one) for generations, and also captures the absolute lawlessness and complete social collapse / economic flight to anywhere else that they've been experiencing.

Buy a new keyboard through Ace's Amazon link.

Yes, I did, thank you!

So....I have lots of my Daddy's guitars, most of which I do not play much.

Now, I don't want to get all long-winded and group therapy here, but suffice it to say my Daddy was a good Daddy to me, but he had two children from an earlier marriage and several butter pats that never saw much of him.

As it turns out, I have just about enough guitars to give each one to my nieces and nephews who are musically inclined.

Problem is, Thor does play quite a few of them. I have a sneaking suspicion it may be just that he like shaving them all around, too, but I cna't deny he plays several of them.

To get to the point, (sorry about that!) how badly would you feel if your wife gave stuff away that you did use? I do think he gets why I want to do it, but he looked kind of bummed about it,

The Kindle Fire is a better choice for people who are already amazon Prime members. And, the Tech Guy says he would choose the Fire over the Nook even the Nook as SD card. The perfect choice might be the next gen Fire in 2012. That said, none of them are good readers. The e-ink readers are better for actual longterm reading. Nice to look at and lightweight. I have the $79 Kindle because I do not like to book-read on a touchscreen. Youtube reviews, Kindle Boards and brick and mortar hands on. I saw a Fire on display in an airport shop yesterday. lol

I'm thinking you're a metal guy, but not sure on that, so it's probably not your thing , but you'd appreciate the talent.  He is an incredible player, almost entirely acoustic with thumbpick and fingers.  Better than Chet Atkins or Jerry Reed, and that's saying a lot for the man.  He has better songs out there, but his covers are easily accessible, so here's a Beatles medley he did.

Of course Argentina is threatening the Falklands. Why shouldn't they?

The UK has proven they cannot defeat a third rate country a stone's throw away with the French and U.S. backing them (Libya). How will they defend the Falklands this time around, particularly since the U.S. will not back them, and the French are occupied trying to save the Euro?

England decided they didn't need a military. Kipling explained how that was a bad idea to them over a century ago, but of course he is thoroughly out of favor these days anyway.

So a few thousand Falkanders will become refugees, and the UK will lose control of the oil by the islands. I doubt they will learn a lesson from it.

669 Miss T, This is what I would do: will the guitars to the people and let the man hold onto them. Man first always. There are other ways to express your feelings to the kin. That's just me though.

ROTFLMAO, you and EoJ, DO have neighboring empires, don't you??

I don't think the guitars are all that valuable. I'd keep one of the Martins, the Strat is the same one he already has, maybe a year older. The 12 string is just an Epiphone (sp?) and he has his own bass, though I'd maybe keep Daddy's Fender, since I know he did actually play that. He will never play the Dobro, ever.....

Yeah guilty. lol

Someone actually gave me an old yamaha classical guitar today, somebody ripped the neck out of the dovetail , tore the top off where the fingerboard is glued, and cracked the neck block.. That guitar really is garbage at this point, but I removed the whole top easy enough already, so really I can just make a new top and reset the neck, and make it live again. Probably be the only yamaha on the planet that will have lost its plywood top for a solid cedar top, but I have a few tops that aren't quite good enough for a serious build, but waaay good enough for the yamaha. I have seeing guitars die.

709 You are not kidding. There is nothing out there that beats the yamaha in the $200-300 range.

There is a very good $300 one thats made by cordoba that bumped yamaha out of the $300 range though. I played a few of them and they are spectacular for the money, the grade of wood used for the neck and solid cedar top is way better than I ever saw on a $300 guitar, so good I bought one for myself and I build the damn things.

717 Cordoba is a spanish made guitar, but they do have an import line called the Iberia series. I have a good spanish made one, so its what got me interested in that Iberia series because it was way cheaper than my spanish one. Cordoba is actually just a label, the guitars were being made in one the guitar building centers of spain. Actually, the shop that made them for cordoba up until about 5 years ago was the same shop making all the student model ramirez guitars, because ramirez only makes their uber expensive grand concert models. I was pretty shocked how good that $300 iberia series guitar is, but I found out later they were designed by kenny hill and is being made in the plant he set up. Just incredible for the money.

Tammy, the easy way to price these things is an ebay search.  when I was younger, 'pre-CBS' was the big code word.

My experience is some guitars are magic and some are not.  I played a friend's '66 jazz for a while.  It did not even need to be plugged in.  It sounded great totally unamplified.    Then when you did plug it in --- wow!!!  It just had the magic.

Since then I have never bought a bass unless it sounded great before I plugged it in.  Drives the goofy young sales kids crazy cuz they apparently have no idea what I am listening to.

745 ""Really, Bers??? About the strat, I mean? I thought the after CBS ones weren't so good?""

Well I'm not a strat dude, but there are 2 schools it seems where strats are concerned. Some dudes love the early 70's strats. A 1971 is still a 40 year old guitar, and from the numbers I hear being thrown around, a really clean 4 bolt neck 71 is pushing 15K because its so rare, and a 3 bolt is 4-5K. Like I said, I'm not a strat guy, and I'm sure the numbers are all over the map, but that is not some cheap guitar. Look at the plate with the screws that hold the neck on. See if there is 3 or 4 bolts, and you'll know what you have.

746 I was great to see the sociopathic, arrogant turd Jesse James get his ass handed to him on live TV tonight. His big comeback was a PR catastrophe.

"Hey, we need to rehabilitate Jesse after he totally screwed America's sweetheart by cheating on her with Nazi whores, so let's put him on a TV Show where he acts like a complete antihuman and then builds a shitty, unimaginative motorcycle to boot."

He's the perfect hero for the era. A self-destructive clown who overestimates himself and is really, really nasty about it.

Glad to see him lose.

747 I don't care what they're worth; I'd never sell them, I am too sentimental. But I will make darn sure Someone doesn't get any ideas about doing so should I happen to predecease him! He probably wouldn't either, though.

I'll check it out tomorrow, though. Too cold to get out of bed right now!

748 the sociopathic, arrogant turd Jesse James

I read that as Jesse Jackson, and I was like "what Nazi whores???"

You would see he and Sandra Bullock here in Huntington Beach now and then. They didn't really match. I am not entirely sure what she saw in him. He looked kind of unclean.

you still need the right info to insure them.  And, get the serial #'s and some pix and keep those away from the house somewhere in case you ever need to make your insurance good.  Also a good idea to have your mom help you write out the provenance as best as you can recreate the memories.

Posted by: jc at December 07, 2011 01:18 AM (ufJKx)

750 I never thought about insurance, jc.....that seems so funny. And my poor mama...I'm afraid he spent money on those suckers that should have been going towards things like food and the house payment. She still gets a certain look on her face when she talks about the guitars and a few cars he bought and promptly wrecked.

He was a session musician in Nashville for several years and from what I can tell, he spent that money about like you'd expect a young man who grew up absolutely dirt poor to spend it. I don't think he even played most of the guitars; David says he just doesn't think the Martins were hardly touched. Daddy probably just knew Martin was a fancy company and had to get him a few.

I would urge you to do a little project in the very near future cuz the longer you wait, the harder it will be to do.

Check out the ebay auctions and others -- get a look at how people verify dates, what pictures they take, etc.  Also, the guitar lovers have started a lot of websites with cool info about models, variations, dating info, finishes, etc.  Check 'em out and match the data to your stuff.

Then prep up a package as if you were going to auction -- you don't have to follow thru -- but doing so will allow you to value your stuff correctly so your insurance is right.

Try to match the guitars to whatever you can -- for example, did any particular guitar get used on any particular session that someone would have heard?  Find the old family fotos that have the guitars in them, etc.  Without torturing your mom, have her help as much as she wants to.  Do the kinds of things that Christie's would do if they were trying to maximize value at auction.

OK, so you choose to keep them in the family forever -- great.  Then the stuff you put together will be interesting to you and yours and will increase their understanding and enjoyment of what those things mean to your family story and why.

just my 2 cents.  if you choose not to go that route, don't spend any time fretting about some BS laid on ya by a far off stranger.

757 Was this "woman from Ohio" who chose Laredo, TX her children's final destination (resting place) a US citizen? I'm thinking yes, given her behavioral expectations and DEMANDS. The time line? From the afternoon to 11:45 pm accounts for two hours of SWAT negotiations? Well, the kids are in hospital, San Antonio. Prayers.

A gun wielding 38-year-old woman from Ohio entered the Texas Health and Human Services Commission office in downtown Laredo on Monday afternoon and demanded to speak to a supervisor. After two hours of negotiations, the woman allowed the male supervisor to go free, but she remained in the office with her two children, a 10-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl. "About 11:45 last night, she hung up the phone with negotiators, and a little bit later, negotiators heard three shots," Baeza said on Tuesday. "What had happened was that she had shot each of her children once and herself once."  Reuters, By Jim Forsyth Nov. 6.

760 From the posted video of Chris Farley's Newt, notice that even in jest, Republicans THEN would not vote for a bill without knowing of its content.

Posted by: The Pirates Your Mother Fears at December 07, 2011 02:56 AM (lpWVn)

761 I've said it before and I'll say it again.  the reason Newt ended up being forced out of the Speaker's position was because he attempted to run the house as an executive.  I don't see how that indicates that he will fail as an executive (i.e., president).

Now, Newt has other attributes that may hurt him as President, but people that keep pointing to his ouster as speaker fail to understand the immense difference between being Speaker and having to try and control and corral 218+ independent and ego-driven caucus members and being the Chief Executive.

I believe that Newt could be a very successful President as he understands the ins and outs of the legislative branch better than most presidents ever do.  The only issue I have with Newt is whether he would go off on a wild-tangent b/c he got mesmerized by some new, shiny "big idea".  But, I have the same or worse fears with Romney.  With Newt, we know he has very conservative bona fides, even if he has gone off the reservation on occasions.  With Romney, we know he has no conservative bona fides but will pretend to be a conservative to get the nomination.  Who is more likely to drift farther left?  In my opinion, Romney is much more likely to sprint to the left both during the general election and as President.  I don't see Romney spending much time, if any, on conservative policy goals.

762 774 I've said it before and I'll say it again. the reason Newt ended up being forced out of the Speaker's position was because he attempted to run the house as an executive. Newt got forced out because Republicans got slaughtered in the '98 midterms when everyone expected them to make gains off of Clinton's impeachment.

763 269  Every female from Estes Park to Denver - and I'm talking in their 30s - was still in college working toward that useless degree; they were all well-traveled, they all claimed to be intelligent, and they all believed strongly in the environment and in social justice.

Ha.  I remember that from when I lived in Denver.

New Orleans is as bad in its own way.  They're all determined to keep living in The Pesthole (aka New Orleans), they all have dogs, they all love Dem Saints an' Da Hornets, they all love the outdoors (an insane notion in the 9+ months of humid hell that is southern Loozyana).  And they're all liberal as hell.  I'm scroooed.
