— Maetenloch The Red Cross and Video Games - Or Why You Might Already Be a War Criminal
So the International Red Cross seems to have run out of things to worry about despite the multiple on-going human rights abuses in Syria and pretty much all of Africa and so they've turned their eye towards ...video games:
Delegates at the 31st International Conference of the Red Cross (ICRC) and Red Crescent raised the concerns over the potential “International Humanitarian Law” violations – which can constitute war crimes – during a workshop in Geneva.
“Exactly how video games influence individuals is a hotly debated topic, but for the first time, Movement partners discussed our role and responsibility to take action against violations of IHL in video games,” the Red Cross wrote in its daily bulletin.
“The aim for the ICRC is that they send the right signals to their hundreds of millions of players by rewarding respect for IHL and penalising violations,” the spokesperson said.Realizing how insanely stupid this sounded to normal people i.e. ones who don't make their living off the human rights industry the PR department at the ICRC quickly jumped into action and declared the whole concern moot. The Red Cross said if it finds the conventions have been violated, they may ask game developers to conform to international laws or encourage governments to create laws that regulate the gaming industry, Kotaku reported.
So the good news is that it's not a war crime to play Call of Duty. On the other hand the 32nd ICRC conference is less than a year away so be wary of what the delegates will come up with next.

Be afraid. Here 27 F-16s taxi down the runway, fully armed and loaded, as part of an “elephant walk” during a Dec. 2, 2011 exercise at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea.

Note that for thousands of years the swastika was considered a good luck symbol until the Nazi party appropriated it in the 20's. Many early fliers had it on their planes as a good luck charm. Even KKK fliers apparently.

I had a friend in HS who was from India who lamented at times that the swastika was now such a despised symbol because of the Nazis. The swastika is also a Chinese character that symbolizes eternity and Buddism.
Too bad the crossed hammer and sickle is not seen with the same disgust, disdain, and fear that the swastika has today.

Yeah, there's a silver-colored door in Hong Kong covered with them, and it sure as hell has nothing to do with Nazis.
A subtle point: isn't the Nazi one pointing clockwise, and the traditional one pointing counter-clockwise?

You didn't notice? I thought it was obvious, and that was confirmed when my buddy and I were discussing it, shortly after election disaster '08 when his commie wife said we were imagining things. She's a wonderful person and a good wife to a dear friend, but if she says a thing is so, often it's a safe bet to go against her. This was one example.

You're both right. The 45th was raised from the New Mexico National Guard, who got it from the 'tribal culture' of NM. Some veterans of the unit get all nostalgic about losing the emblem, and would like it back.
And this is partially right. The 45th was organized in four states simultaneously; New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado and, of course, Oklahoma. IIRC, all were National Guard activities. Next time you're in the OKC area, stop by the 45th museum. It's top notch.

Two days ago I watched a documentary about Hitler's early days. It showed the first swastika he ever saw - on a monastery where he attended school as a kid. The swastika had the long axes at 12-6 and 9-3 on the clock (as opposed to the tilted swastika the Nazis would later use) and the arms were short, and at 45 degrees from the long axes, giving it almost a circular aspect. It was carved somewhere between the 14th and 18th centuries, for what it's worth.

116 All those F-16s bunched up look like one big-ass target. Who is in charge over there, some ASCOAMF?
Near the end of certain exercises, the squadron(s) simulate a mass launch by taxiing all the ready aircraft to the runway. They taxi down the runway to get back to their parking areas. Trust me, they weren't out there long. Just long enough to let all the surveillance sats in the area get a good look. Deterrence.

In 2008, the Republican primary voters for one reason or another decided to go with the mavericks Huckabee and McCain. This time the non-establishment figures appear to be Newt and Perry except that Perry isn't a maverick.
So, if it comes down to Newt and Perry, the GOP will go for the pliable dunce Perry like it went for Bush in 2000.

How do you know you're a bitter clinger? Cannot say as I qualify, but I have experienced the sights and sounds of the mileau. After Erie, the biz moved me over into Centre County, town called Lock Haven, another paper mill build job. Bitter clingerism there made Erie look like Disneyworld.
Anyhoo, the motel we stayed in in Erie gave us a chit worth some slots time at the newish local casino up the road. Walked inside and . . . wholly flashback!!11!1
Did you know you can smoke in a PA casino and bar? And that you can have Elvis Presley hair and play the penny slots there while you suck down those Camels?
I'm gonna propose to Axelrod and Plouffe that the SCOAMF, in his battleground states tour, skip the bowling alley and the donut shop when he visits PA, and instead to to the Presque Isle Downs casino, smoke up some Kools, chat up some cocktail waitresses, and see if he can hit the jackpot on the $1 Wild Cherry machine. After that he can go out in the parking lot and puke.
Just like those bitter clingers.

Hmm. I'm with you that the Northern Virginia regiments, especially, actually believed in states-rights and didn't care for slavery. Virginia stuck to the Union for some time. The western part of northern Virginia stayed there.
But I must point out that even those Northern Virginians who didn't join Byrd's ancestors in grasping on to the Union, still agreed with the Byrd family that they didn't want black folk voting or marrying their daughters.

Since Team Mo(Ron), loves a good story, I guess I'll share one.
While with the folks, prior to Thanksgiving dinner, my dad pulled me aside, and asked if I'd do something for him as a Christmas gift, since he didn't really want anything material. He knows I'd do anything for him or the rest of the family, so it was an easy request, but I was still touched that he asked me. Grandpa B, his father, passed last year, and dad came into possession of his shotgun. It had been in storage for 15-20 years (I'm not sure how long, exactly, but it's not really important), under awful conditions. I was asked to do what I could to bring it back to life.
I was given the shotgun, which was not anything special in terms of value or collectibility, but special in that it belonged to his father, my grandfather, whom I adored. The gun is a plain-Jane Remington 870 Wingmaster, which you can buy new for less than $800, and has no collectibility value. Mice had eaten into the case in which it was stored, and it was covered in rust and scunge - upon discovering he had cancer the first time, Grandpa B put it up, and it never came back out.
Upon inspection, I was horrified. As noted before, there was rust everywhere, and on everything. The plastic parts were yellowed and brittle. I set to work, trying to bring this thing back to life.
After hours upon hours of work, with steel wool and oil, shop rags and sweat, I've finally gotten it back to where it once was. The blue is still deep and shiny, the wood is back in its original glossy configuration, and the action is slicker than it was the day it was purchased. I took it out yesterday and shot sporting clays with it, and it was a proud day for me when it roared back to life and the targets shattered. I saw my dad yesterday and told him about it over a beer or three, and he had tears in his eyes. I am very, very thankful that I've gotten to do this for him, and it's not done yet.
I'll be giving him back his father's shotgun, almost as good as new, but with one final little detail: I'm having the family crest engraved on the righthand side of the receiver (small and tasteful), and inlaid with 23K gold. We've never had an heirloom of any kind, and I'm giving pop something that can be passed down through generations, hopefully ad infinitum. Sure., it's just a common old shotgun that anyone can buy, but this one is going to be OURS, and that idea pleases me to no end. Without doubt, this has been one of the most satisfying things I've ever done in my life, and I hope you've enjoyed my little story.
Merry Christmas, morons. I hope you all can give to someone and enjoy it as much as I have.

Thank you for the compliment. Grandpa B was a farmboy, whose family owned no land - he worked land owned by others, because he was able, and the family had to eat. He had an 8th grade education, but decided to pool his entire life savings into buying a couple milling machines, and ended up providing good jobs to 30 people before he retired, having built his own little company out of the dirt. They still make parts for NASA...as hard as it is to imagine, I'm told my sainted grandmother used to mic parts 16 hours a day at the start.
There are days when I'm glad Grandpa B doesn't have to see what we've come to as a nation and a people.

I doubt that anyone is discounting Newt's ability to understand history - that is his bag, baby, and all that. There is no candidate out there, nor an incumbent president, that has a better long-term perspective on how world events play out.
Unfortunately, he is a confirmed "R" adulterer (which means it counts against him, what with the scarlet R), running against an incumbent whom has had intercourse with one woman, and no men, that can be proven. IYKWIMAITTYD

The old library is empty, I hope they don't tear it down because it is a Carnagie library. The courthouse burned again, and this time when they rebuilt it they put the clock tower back on it. The A&W burned down many moons ago, now there is a bank on the spot. Other than that...probably not much changed.

My niece's 18th birthday was Friday. I was surrounded by teenage girl giggly-ness for a few hours. I said I hadn't been back to Iowa in the wintertime since 1990. She said "that's before I was born!"
gee...that doesn't make me feel old at all...

When I met my better half, one of her favorite songs was Aqualung (Jethro Tull).
Since it was '72, she really didn't know what the first two lines of the song actually said (rotten Dolby, cheap cassettes, etc.).
She was embarrassed. So I married her.

Most morons can put first priniciples forward, and then extrapolate. I'm still waiting for that finger-sniffer named earlier to explain what it believes in, as opposed to what it is against. The troll is clearly a truly inferior mind attempting to get a response from the caricatures it believes everyone to be. The bait is always packaged for non-existent partial humans that the troll imagines might exist in non-leftist world.
The troll has adopted permanent status as a stereotype of a pre-adolescent
little brother who reacts to their exclusion from the activities of
those around them through an unending dedication to being as annoying as possible. If the troll is approximately 9 years old, there is still hope. At any age beyond that our troll is truly a sad specimen, a thief of oxygen, and a waste of your valuable time.

I got the Grace Allegro. It works pretty good. It has an okay speaker, it cuts off the bass so you'll want to hook it up to external speakers if you want high-quality output. Also its WiFi receiver is somewhat weak, you'll want to place it relatively near the router. It is super-easy to set up though, it only took me about 10 mins. So I'd give it 3.5/5 stars.

Jerry,
Cut, jib, newsletter. I asked for answers from our resident retard, not you. If I wanted a well thought-out rationale for why military strength is important, and a good explanation of why that's the case, you, along with many members of the Horde are on my list. If I seem in any way short or irritated, rest assured it's not directed to you, but is related to me calling it a night very shortly.
I want to know what our resident assrash of a troll actually believes in. It professes negative opinions about all manner of subjects, but has yet to profess belief in anything. My guess is that it will eventually say that it believes in "A", in the process of explaining that belief in "A" is based on a series of assumptions grounded in "not A".
Your above post is correct, as was what you posted earlier.

Be careful. My sister just lost her Border Collie to IMHA, an autoimmune disorder that destroys red blood cells. Monday two weeks ago they were training and she felt something was wrong and took Quinn straight to the vet. He was diagnosed and sent home but by the following night he wouldn't eat an could barely lift himself from his bed. Essentially he was severely oxygen starved for lack of red blood cells to keep his tissues fed.
We took him to a specialist in Woodland Hills that night and they gave him the first of three blood transfusions. (Oddly, the hospital was formerly the site of Kolbe Honda, a motorcycle shop where one of our brothers was a mechanic during the 80s.) By Friday, after $5,000 had been spent my sister accepted that the chances of getting him back at all were a tossup and even then he would likely be severely weakened for the rest of his life. This is a competitive sports dog, in addition to the general driviness of a Border Collie, and thus quality of life became a big factor.
So it ended that night. A lot of tears all around and a severe lack of dog in this house. I'm taking my sister to the airport in the morning to visit the other sister in WA, where she lives with her family and three Borzois. (They're big but almost two dimensional, so it works out.) When the oldest Borzoi was about a year old he was diagnosed with a heart defect and expected to die before he was three years old. Just putting your hand on his side and feeling the weird way his heart beats makes people queasy. But the evil little bastard is nine now.

I genuinely don't give a damn if he is. Frankly, I didn't care that Clinton was the kind of guy who'd bang the chubby intern. The problem was that he lied about being that kind of guy from the moment he first announced himself as a candidate. A considerable number of critics had his number and even named some names. And it turned out to be true.
Doesn't apply to Gingrich. He doesn't have any secrets to protect or lies to maintain on this front. If the question comes up in any forum, he merely has to say, "Yeah, I'm not very good at the marriage thing. But the job isn't surrogate husband to the nation. Can we talk about something germane to my duties, like economics or foreign policy.
Remember: It wasn't the sex. It was the lying about the sex. Along with the revelation that the warnings had been correct.

Posted by: Joffen at December 12, 2011 01:32 AM (zLeKL)"
It's not even the same name anymore?
I think you can see what Newt was saying by watching what he actually said, rather than suggesting he supports everything some other group with another name is saying.
Not that we shouldn't know Newt's energy policy.
Newt claims the sit with Pelosi was a huge mistake, and that he's changed his mind.
And Mitt was a foaming at the mouth retard about this same topic, easily more liberal than Newt, as usual. Mitt is basically a much dumber and more liberal version of Newt. Both are technocrats and moderates, but Newt wins his battles sometimes, and he's more conservative. Neither are my ideal, but I'm afraid it's coming down to these two men, and there really is no doubt which would be a better president.
I've heard Newt speak out in support of pipelines, btw. I don't know if these are the same as those, but he supports exploration for energy, etc etc. I can't blame you for holding it against Newt for placating on global warming like that, but unfortunately, the conservative choice's campaign is a failure, so that leaves Mitt the liberal.

I checked too. You're right. But Newt isn't affiliating with them now, is he? If they changed years after Newt did one video, is Newt responsible for that? Of course not.
"In the commercials with Pelosi, he doesn't say where he disagrees with Pelosi. He just appears with her and they both talk about the 'need to address climate change'. "
Yes, that's right. And now he says he was being really stupid to do that.
"What made him do the commercials in the first place and why did he change his mind now? We need these questions answered.
Posted by: Joffen at December 12, 2011 01:51 AM (zLeKL)"
He's already talked about it.
from Daily Caller:
"
However, on Tuesday’s “Special Report” on the Fox News Channel, Gingrich — now a candidate for the Republican nomination for president — admitted it was a mistake for him to appear in the ad during the show’s “Center Seat” segment.
“First of all, that is probably the dumbest single thing I’ve done in years,” Gingrich said. “It is inexplicable that somebody used to say, ‘You know, there aren’t enough hay wagons to stand on to get people to understand that.’ You just need to relax and go, that was dumb.”
[...]
Gingrich then described a book he co-authored, titled “Contract with the Earth,” which he said outlined “a pro-market, pro-entrepreneur, innovative environmentalism.”
He then said, “I don’t know whether global warming is occurring,
What question do you specifically want answered, though? Newt has talked a lot about energy exploration and support for pipelines, which sounded like the issue you were originally bringing up. I think he's largely OK on that.
I just don't see how it matters what this group is up to now, after Newt's not even affiliated with them.

Dammit.
Anyway, the quote from Daily Caller ends with the word 'occurring'. I didn't post most of the article, and you can google that up pretty easily if you're curious about Newt talking about this video.
Much more important is his view on energy exploration and regulation. Newt claims he supports a pro market policy, and I think most of his commentary is in line with that.
If we're comparing Newt to Perry, I think Perry clearly wins. But Perry is not a factor anymore. It's basically Newt vs Mitt, and Mitt's got a much worse record.

Newt is not as conservative. And now it's between Newt and Mitt and we're screaming about Newt? Well... what's the realistic alternative? Mitt is not as conservative as Newt.

I'm not arguing that you're wrong about that. But then, what are their goals? They are incredibly simplistic, right? Man is going to change the environment, so we must stop that with government intrusion. They can take on 100 different flavors and tactics, but it's very simple: they want more government.
The new site appears to mainly just bash 'deniers' in incredibly stupid ways, such as suggesting there aren't any, or they are really stupid. No serious attempt to debate the issue is made.
Newt did something similar in promoting the problem, but as annoying as that was, it's not intellectually dishonest or quite as annoying as the new site.
Regardless, my concern is that Newt may be the only Not Romney left standing. Sure, I'd much rather be able to pick someone better than Newt, but if it comes down to Newt vs Romney, these transgressions on Newt's part... as valid as it is to complain about them... they don't mean we shouldn't vote for him.
Hopefully I'm reading this wrong and a more conservative and experienced executive will be viable when I vote.

Your arguments suck, btw. I assume you're the same goofball by other names at other blogs, with the same stupid argument that amounts to emulating Bush Derangment Syndrome from the worst of the left.
Perry ran a huge state extremely successfully for a very long time. He's accomplished much more than you ever will, and has been a force for net good in Texas. He's not perfect, but he's one of the good guys.
My disrespect for Romney is much more justified, because Romney supported Romneycare, which is a substantial control of economic choices in order to provide freebies to a certain constituency. It's textbook socialism. And Romney repeatedly fought against the human right of bearing arms. He is a net harm on my country, and consistently selfish in his unprincipled flip flops, including even on 'Abortion Rights' the issue Romney claims he championed longer than any other issue (37 years). no matter where one stands on abortion, it's disturbing to see someone actually play politics with human life while claiming to be a very religious person.
That's why so many people have articulate reasons for rejecting Romney, but you're left with derpy derp 'Me Perry me stupid'.

And sometimes, on one of my random meandering walks through the woods I take in this rugged-looking jacket Jesus bought me at Eddie Bauer for my last birthday as phantom tinkly music wafts along the breeze from some indeterminate location, I think about how you don't need to be a Christian, or heck, even a Protestant, to see that there's something seriously wrong with this country when a guy like me has to cut an ad equating the severity of the national crisis of school prayer with that of the ability of Cpl. Lance Sterling to stick his wee-wee into the firing line of Sgt. Gary Packenwood, just to appeal to a few corn-suckers in Iowa who are going to choose your next presidential nominee for you.
But that's what the Son of God, as a member of my campaign staff, thought I needed to do to get back into this thing; so here I am trudging across this greenscreen so that I can be keyed into the favorite woodland haunt to which Anita exiles me every Thursday when the new primary polls come out. He is for "carbon-lowering" credits and CO2 sequestration."
I'm not trying to call you a liar when I ask for some specifics.
If he's currently calling for carbon credits, that's very much worth bashing him over.
I'm afraid I'm a bit ignorant of the terms the liberals use for this stuff. Is C02 sequestration referring to technology like clean coal? Probably not if you're complaining, but I have no problem with such standards.
If you're talking about carbon credits by another name, that is something I disagree with very much.
The fact is that clean coal is a good thing, and it's annoying as hell that good new plants are blocked by red tape from the left despite the fact they would replace dirtier plants.
Personally, I think nuclear is a great solution too, but am not optimistic we're going in that direction.

Faith made America strong, and I strongly recommend it as a campaign strategy.
I'm Rick Perry, and I approve this, uh.... this.... um.... damn it, what did I just say again?

Ingredients for My Garlicky Crunchies with Flaked Red Pepper3 lavaş/lavash
3 tbsp soft butter (room temperature)
2 tbsp or to taste flaked red pepper/ pul biberi
2 big cloves garlic or to taste, crushed
3 tbsp grated parmesan or eski kaşar peyniri
Method
· Pre-heat oven to 180°C/350°F.
· Place the butter in a bowl and mash with a fork to make sure it’s soft. Add all the other ingredients and mash till well blended.
spreading the softened buttery mixture over the lavaş
· Using a knife, spread the mixture over a sheet of lavaş making sure to spread all the way to the edges. With a knife or pizza cutter (preferable), cut into triangles. Actually, the shape and size are up to you. They donÂ’t have to be uniform.
cutting the lavaş
· Place in a single layer on a baking tray and put in the middle of your pre-heated oven. Cook for 5-7 minutes. Keep your eye on them as they can easily burn. Remove and cool on a wire rack.
cooling on the rack
Tips
The ingredients are extremely flexible in terms of quantity. You donÂ’t have to be exact here. The recipe specifies 3 lavaş but everything depends on their size. I wouldn't worry about it. Adapt as you go.The possibilities are endless for further versions: how about dried thyme/kekik or cumin/kimyon scattered with sesame/susam seeds or nigella/çörekotu?

What can I say? The guy is apparently on the verge of tears about Rick Perry, who is polling at 6%.
It's very amusing.
Remember, Undead promised he would campaign against Rick Perry if he was the nominee running against Obama. Undead promised, essentially, to support Barack Obama.
Then he claimed I was lying when I noted how retarded this was. No, I wasn't.
Undead, why in the hell does Rick Perry bother you so much? He's not even a factor anymore. The guy is a great governor and a solid conservative. He's run a scandal free administration for 12 years. He's backed excellent policies as a legislator and he even succeeded with tort reform that conservatives can only dream about in California (I assume that's where you are for some reason).
Is there really much reason to hate the guy this much? Did he kill your cat? Did he screw your mother? Are you just some kind of deranged liberal who actually wants the GOP to reject the policies Perry supports? Which policy, specifically, of Perry's, do you reject to the degree that justifies rage at this point?
You've never bothered to specify that. It's like you don't even care about policy.

This is how you respond?
All I asked was what policy of Perry's do you actually hate this much? I mean, it's not like it matters if you bash him anymore... he's done. He's polling very poorly, and your continued fury about the guy suggests you've got a serious problem with him.
I've noted the problems I've had with Romney... you used to try to argue with me about it, but you lost so badly that you just resort to this schoolyard taunt stuff now.
But at least I've explained what in Romney's record ticks me off. I have no idea why you actually appear to hate 'that aggie f*ck', to use your terms.
Do you hate limited spending? Tort reform? Energy exploration? I mean, you support Romney of all people... it's hard to see why a conservative would hate Perry but find Romney acceptable.
There's gotta be something though, right? If there weren't, you wouldn't hate Perry.
I'm sorry that you find my comments too intellectual. You've made this complaint many times, and it comes across like the retarded people in idiocracy thinking the normal guy is faggy. You sound like you have a mental illness, undead.
I did promise I would continue to note you promised to trash Perry if he were the nominee, yes. I didn't promise to point out your 'heresies against teh rickster'. You said you'd trash 'that aggie f*ck' all the way to election day if he were nominated. That's what you said. You were asked if you'd support him against Obama, and you said you'd trash him.
Your reason wasn't even anything with Perry. You were mad at Buzzion, and you explained you would trash Perry because it was some kind of revenge against Buzzion.
You keep saying I'm a liar... but you flatly denied this promise to trash Perry if he was the nominee until I quoted you in three threads, which showed you to be extremely dishonest.
so... um... you're kinda the liar here.
Can you quote something I've said that is a lie? You act like you have something in mind... it should be really easy for you to prove I'm a liar then, right? But you can't. You just project your sins onto me to foment confusion so people who don't follow your drama just equivocate that we're both throwing crap at eachother.
Anyway, by the way you freaked out to Buzz, it's clear you were actually furious about an argument you lost with him about Romney. Not internet-fury, but real fury.
You project this fury onto me, but I just don't feel it. Like I said, trash Perry if you want. He is a non-factor. you are doing no harm at this point to do it, in my opinion.
All I asked was what about Perry makes you so mad. I think the truth is you are mad that you didn't fare will in arguments with people like me, whom you realize liked Perry (to some extent... I just thought he was better than the other candidates... I don't really think he's the greatest thing out there).
Anyway, Romney fanboy, you and I both know. You know I'm no liar, and that you are one. How's that feel? I seem to be able to get under the skin of the Romney hack more than anybody... I don't even know why, as I'm not really trying to troll you. I think it's because Romney's more cultist devotees are insecure in a way that arguing with me exposes.

I don't work tomorrow. But I also spend probably 1% of the time here that you do. You really do appear to be obsessed with non-constructive smearing of a conservative, and you continue to refuse to explain which policy of Perry's you think Romney is better on. If there isn't one, just say that. Maybe you hate Perry for being evangelical. That's what I'm picking up from your comments. You also called me evangelical with zero basis. Why would you lie about me like that? Are you retarded? That doesn't even relate to anything. It's just stupid.
Can't hold your own on a real debate, so you're just basically screaming into your monitor at this point?
That's not necessary. I don't care that you hate my guts, other than feeling sorry for you. You clearly take this shit a lot more seriously than I do, and I think you probably suffer far more for it than I'd ever wish on you.
At the end of the day, you and a few of your pals think those who bash Romney are fair game for incredibly ugly replies, and I think that is a very big part of why Romney is loathed online. Those who serve as his most prominent ambassadors are invariably unpleasant.
For me, a guy who wants a not-Romney 100X more than he ever wanted Perry specifically, I look to commenters like you as a blessing in disguise.

You let internet arguments affect you too much. Even when you were promising to trash the GOP nominee if it was the one Buzz wanted (essentially promising to help Obama), you weren't doing it because of anything Perry did. You were just reacting to a commenter on this blog.
That's stupid. People like you are your own worst enemy.

I think the problem is that many reject conservatives, even 90% conservatives in a field where the nearest competitor is a 50% conservative. They aren't being constructive and I don't really know how to fix this.
But there's also the rather obvious problem that Perry didn't get decent at these debates until rather recently, and he left a very poor impression on people who aren't so familiar with his great record.
It got very old defending Bush from the 'he's an idiot' charge for eight years, and even though I don't think Bush or Perry were idiots at all, and I don't think this ugliness is more important than Perry's actual record, I do think this is a big problem for Perry.

Yup. And Porter played for the Doobies, and Radle played for Delaney/Bonnie/Clapton and that whole Tulsa crowd of JJ Cale, Leon Russell, etc.
But I always loved learning Jerry Scheff's licks cuz he had a million of 'em. Every tune is chock fulla stuff a guy can steal and apply somewhere else.

I have a mission for you.
I need you to go see Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol. In front of it will be a six minute preview of the Dark Knight Rises. I need you to go see it. And sneak in a video camera. And then I need you to post it to YouTube for me.
Do this thing for me. Because...uh...well, I'll think of a reason later.

You're shitting me. The bring an imbecile from the asylum and let him loose in here every night? So what happens, do people actually let him drink? No shit, they argue with him? Why? They know he's crazy right?
Fights? What fights? How often do the fight? Really, over what? No shit. That means they agree more than they disagree. Why do they fight? Oh. I see.
Well, fuck it. Let's drink. I heard they got tunes here.

For someone who has an established following or the knack of self-promotion, self-publishing on the Kindle and nook can be very lucrative. A big factor is that you can price things as low as you like or even give stuff away to build an audience. Plot out a trilogy and give away volume 1 to get them hooked. The first dose is free.
There are some folks who've had million+ plus sellers at 99 cents on the Kindle and that is still great money for a regular working slob breaking into the writing business. Look here: Amazon Kindle Royalty Rates. A 99 center makes the author/publisher 35 cents per sales with no charge for 3G delivery. (This is why the fat files KindleGen produces from ePUBs were driving me nuts.)
This may not sound like much but compared to traditional publishing of genre novels it's bloody miraculous. There are a number of people completely unknown in the print sector who are earning well into the six figures. The most famous is Amanda Hocking, who went from being a 26-year-old waitress to earning close to $2 million on her YA novels before going over to the dark side and signing with a Big Six publisher for a four book series, for an advance of $2 million..
The take gets a lot sweeter for items priced at $2.99 or higher. That gets you into the 70% royalty rate. If you've got a popular book at that price, which hasn't been common on paperbacks since the early Reagan administration days, you can really make serious money.
I generally encourage self-publishers to go for the $2.99 rate whenever possible. If your book is especially bulky you may want to go higher to mitigate the delivery cost, or if you're a big name and can justify a higher price for a 'hardback' window. But I believe the lowest price with the highest royalty is the sweet spot. If you're trying to build a name or do the heroinware thing, go lower.
One writer who I think has a very good insight on the future of writing is Peter F. Hamilton. He is best known for massive epic space operas. He recently had a novel that is a prequel to his Commonwealth universe, called 'Misspent Youth.' It actually isn't very good compared to so much else of his work but there is an interesting subplot about how artists make their living. The main character is a famous elderly scientist who at immense expense is restored to youth in hopes he has some more great breakthroughs left to produce given good health. He is best known for creating a data storage medium of incredible capacity and fairly low cost. It is such that you can keep every movie, song, book or anything else than can be stored as bits in your pocket. (A few centuries later this technology makes it possible to survive complete loss of the body and having your memories implanted in a newly grown body, although one that is inconveniently young and weak when you first regain consciousness, as well as expensive, so body loss is still to be avoided.)
Because of this storage medium and communications links that can be used to fill it very quickly, the business of selling digitally expressed artworks has completely collapsed. Copyright is a lifeless husk. Instead, creators such as writers are entirely dependent on the good will of their readers, who send donations of varying sizes, much like hitting the tip jar at a favorite blog. The wealthy gain status by patronage and might commission specific works. a practice that has been with us for centuries given new elevation.
This is because the same technology that makes it so hard to enforce copyright also makes it incredibly easy to move money around. Paypal is just the start. In the novel this system is working pretty well, with only the film industry forced to make major changes to their business model but it must be noted that this business model has always had corrupt accounting at its core. So shed no tears there.

I'll vote for the most conservative viable candidate I can. I'm don't think we're being smarter than liberals in how we choose our candidates, and I think the GOP's problems with this are a very long running trend. The GOP lets the hard left moderate most of our debates, and they endorse and fund RINOs like Romney.
I was hoping the blogosphere would be the solution to that, but (present blog excluded to be honest) many of them just trash the SHIT out of everyone, with no constructive, realistic alternatives. Either they trash them all, or they claim to support someone who really is unsupportable (in my opinion, Bachmann is a good example).
=------------------------------------
"I called you "evangelistic", dumbshit."
What was your point?
Seriously, what did you mean by that? You had just trashed Perry on religious grounds "'m not ashamed to admit I'm a Christian. I loves me some Jesus " and then you call me evangelistic, so what did you mean?
If you really meant the more broad meaning, that people debating politics on here are trying to advocate their beliefs to people who disagree, aren't you being an idiot? Isn't that pretty normal behavior on a political blog?
No, Undead, you are a liar. You were trashing me as an evangelical Christian, and when I note you just made that up, you just explain by evangelist, you weren't referencing religion at all... and hey, I should be ashamed of thinking you'd do that even though you actually did that exact thing a few minutes prior.
Just so you understand: the only reason I'm linking this is because you called me a liar. I always rebut that kind of thing if I'm able to.
I asked you if your comment that you would support Rick Perry when Hell Freezes Over meant you wouldn't support him in the general election, and you replied with:
http://minx.cc/?blog=86&post=323312#c16055175
"I'll be more than happy to blow holes in this dipshitted Aggie fuck right here on this blog right up until Election Day, if that floats your fucking boat.
I'd hate to disappoint you, after all.

I replied that it was a shame, but I respect your right as an American to support Obama and wondered what about Perry upset you so much. It was clear that it wasn't Perry that affected you... just a commenter who left you looking stupid.
It's nice that you have changed your mind, and I'm really really proud of you for having a job. Good for you. The only problem is that you're a pathological liar, and you don't appear to have a normal sense of perspective, so I think you're full of shit.

If you're directing that at me, I think I'm probably guilty as charged.
"So we're too lazy to carefully choose our candidate. Too lazy to consider the various candidates positions with anything resembling thought. You know who these assholes remind me of? Democrats. Let's pick a liberal because he talks better."
It's incredibly annoying. do we think Abraham Lincoln would have held his own in today's stupid process? I doubt it. George Clooney? Probably would be crushing everyone else.
It's all about smooth memorization of insincere views.
The guy who actually walked the walk? No one gives a shit that he walked the walk because he's not as smooth as the guy who gave us Romneycare.
I am a captive to this process. I can't resist voting for the most viable not-Romney. Everyone else left Perry's cause, and now I'm doing the same because I can't just vote for the guy with 6% if there's a real battle between Romney and a somewhat less horrible candidate.
Sucks.

The more I hear about the Big Six, the madder I get and it sounds as though the music and film industries aren't any better.
Pretty interesting times to be an artist, for sure. I try and be mindful about copying CDs and such, although I certainly do it.

Yeah, Tom Cruise is still doing Mission Impossible, but I want to see this one for one reason...Brad Bird. He's the director. He also directed The Incredibles and Ratatouille and The Iron Giant. So I dig the guy. I want to see how good he is doing live action action movies.

On his site there is no place to give him money or send him gifts, like an Amazon wish list. He has predicted the future but doesn't realize it's already here.
My Nook has a 16 GB microSD card added to it and can accept a 32 GB unit. I have well over a thousand books on there and haven't even exceeded 10% of the available storage. The newer SDXC standard for SD cards allows for up to 2 TeraBytes per unit.
Now, I'm a freelance IT geek, so most of my pants are of the cargo variety and I carry a lot more flash drives than most folks. Currently my set of drives are minimally 16 GB and all together I have 160 GB of storage on my person whenever I go out. That doesn't include the assortment of 8 Gb and smaller drives in a side pocket of my backpack where my laptop lives when not in use. Add to that the 320 GB drive in the laptop and the terabyte or so of other external hard drives in the backpack.
So yeah, I carry around a lot more storage than most but this is going to look dinky compared to what people will have on their keychains just a few years from now. Intel and Micron just demoed a 128 Gigabit flash chip. Based on their roadmap, 128 GB flash drives should be under $50 within 5 years.
I can put every word Hamilton has ever published on a single 1 GB flash unit of the sort that now is given away in place of 20 pound catalogs at trade shows. The audio versions of all of those books and stories would easily fit at good quality on a 32 GB drive and those go for less than a buck a GB now.
If you're a writer, it is critical that you make it easy for people who don't want to buy stuff conventionally to still reward you.

I can be pretty stupid, man. Don't underestimate me.
My view is that Perry is far from perfect, but the general election will be about jobs, and Perry has a great answer on that issue. I also think Perry will fight the hardest on the issues I care most about, and also already is capable of running a large government.
My other view is that Romney really doesn't represent my views ideologically and his policy shifts are dishonest plays for pander, even on some really basic issues.
These two issues probably line up great. I can just vote for Perry and sleep well.
But what if there's a Not-Romney who isn't as good as Perry, but I do think would fight the left better than Romney and is probably more conservative than Romney (who really knows what romney believes)?
What if the race comes down to a point where the conservatives are all at 6% or whatever, but there is a tight race between Romney and Newt? In that case, I'm voting Newt. Am I being played? Probably.

No, I'm not comfortable with it at all. But the reality is that Perry is at 6%. If I were polled, I'd say I support Perry. If I actually voted and it wasn't a close match between Romney and a Not Romney, I'd also vote Perry.
I'm just recognizing that there could be a situation where we either unify behind a not-Romney or we wind up with Romney.
Do you have a realistic and constructive alternative in mind?

I think a Newt presidency could be excellent. It probably wouldn't be, but the potential is there. I think at worst he would be about where Bush 43 was on most matters. This is not the ideal, but I can compromise to supporting Newt.
My ideal isn't Rick Perry either, you know. I had to compromise some to accept supporting him.
The primary is the right thing to just stubbornly take a do or die attitude and support the guy who really does represent what you want most closely, but this is why I've explained I have the additional factor of wanting anyone but Romney.
