Overnight Open Thread - Friday [Ben]
— Open Blogger

Well it looks like CDR-M is caught up in this whole "Hurricane Irene" business or as the Krug-Man calls it, "Organic Jobs Creator."

Just a reminder to the East Coast Elite Morons that there is a storm is a'headin your way.

Details on the storm's path can be found here. If you are potentially in the path, then you should probably check this every hour or so. As TMI3rd pointed out this morning, these things can easily change direction.

Now for something unrelated to Hurricane Irene.

Let's see what I've got here...[rummaging through internet]....ahh here we go.

Let's start off with this.

Did you love playing the original Nintendo Entertainment System when you were a kid or in Vic's case, when you were in your early 70s?

Yeah, me too.

Do you wish you could play those games again but don't want to go to all that trouble of buying them on E-Bay?

Well then this place is for you. It's called Nintendo 8.

It has an extensive collection of games. Maybe if you're lucky you can play the this hard to find NES title:

An American College has now put a category for sexual oreintation on it's admission application form. I guess this can be viewed in one of two ways. Either it's another signpost on the highway of American decline, or it's finally a way for poor white males to offset the disadvantage to being white on a college application. You might as well check "homosexual" on the application. It's not as though they can disprove it.

Anyway, it sure beats having to do this:

Have you ever wondered what your lungs look like in action? Well check this out.

The doctors who created this machine are experimenting with ways to extend the amount of time lungs can remain viable for transplant.

Are you sick and tired of getting junk mail? Want to get revenge? Try this:

Time for break dance kitteh.

Other hilarious GIFs at Animals Being Dicks

ESPN, which I'm told is a media conglomerate that covers sports, put out a provocative article titled, "What If Michael Vick Were White?" Besides the obvious, winning Superbowls or being a third string scrambling QB who can't throw cough Tim Tebow cough, the article is the same race based crap the media peddles daily. However, this article is noteworthy because it has a poorly thought out photoshop above the fold.

Hmm, sickening yet tasteful

Thank god for the internet, photoshop and people with a sense of humor. My personal favorite:

Hmm, sickening yet tasty

33 Fizzling, no. But it didn't have the explosive growth this afternoon we were expecting... I want to see what the Hurricane Hunters have to say with their 11 PM advisory before running with that. Irene is over warm, energy-rich waters, and that means that we don't get to ignore this storm until it's out over the Atlantic and extratropical.

This is a no shit true story.

I was at the tavern a couple of weeks ago.

I had to piss, when I was standing there taking care of the need, a real drunk chick walked in and asked what the blue thing was in one of the urinals....

I told her it was a cowboy breath mint.

She laughed so hard she pissed herself.

Then to fix it, she fished her wet panties from underneath her skirt and tossed then into the trashcan and walked out.

66 (ABC News) — President Obama will return to Washington, D.C., tonight, one day earlier than originally planned, White House officials said.

The president made the decision to cut short his family vacation on Martha’s Vineyard shortly after addressing the nation about the impending danger of Hurricane Irene, which he said has the potential to be “historic.”

Obama is expected to arrive back at the White House on Friday evening. His family will remain on the Vineyard through Saturday morning.

The family had been scheduled to return to Washington together tomorrow afternoon.

And, when the interviewer asks the obligatory "do you have any questions for us?" question, you should actually have some insightful question to ask, something that shows you've been studying their web pages/annual report/long-range plans and have a sincere interest in their company.

That's what I've heard anyway.

98 So I need some interview advice. How about what not to do or say?

Posted by: nightwitch at August 26, 2011 10:13 PM (11j7G)

A few suggestions. For most positions for the first interview, hiring managers have a lot more resumes then positions all nominally qualified - so they are primarily looking for things to weed people out with.

Try not to say anything that might be negative about yourself. You don't want to be a complete ego-hound but stay away from anything negative to the best of your ability without outright lying (caught a few people doing that and the interview is then over for all practical purposes).

If possible make the interview about what you can do for them. Remember, the hiring manager is going through this exercise for that reason!

Knowledge of the company is an added bonus since it makes the manager think you are serious about the position.

1. If the interviewer asks "what is your biggest fault", just respond: "well, I mistakenly thought that if I had sex with your mom that I wouldn't have to go through the interview process at all.  Guess I was wrong!  But your mom seemed to enjoy it anyway."

2. Wear your most revealing outfit.  It shows you will be a trustworthy employee as you have nothing to hide.

3. Make sure you stand out from all the other applicants.  Bring your pet zebra with you.

4. When asked "why are you are interested in working here?", just be truthful: "Well I heard that the women here are pretty easy."

5. When asked "what assets do you think you can bring to this company?", stand up, grab your ass and say "HERE'S MY ASSETS RIGHT HERE, BABY"

hope this helps

Posted by: nightwitch at August 26, 2011 10:13 PM (11j7G)

Put together some capsules or soundbites for the obvious questions they ask to see if you can comunicate.

Like:

Tell me about you?

1.You make a capsule of about 30 to 45 seconds about your life from high school or college until now.

2.Tell me about your last job?

30 second capsule.

3.why do you want to workd for us?

Look at their website and find some things you like about the company and put it into a capsule.

4. Interviewers pregnant silence after you answer the question.

Politely ask him if there was something more he wanted to know.

Those are just some,

There is a good book written by John Lucht called "Rites of Passage at $100,000 to $1 Million. He has a chapter on interviews. I've been using it since the 80's and it's always worked for me.

Wrong. The answer is:

"Well, until now, I would have said I can be a bit passive with customers, but you've changed my mind. My single greatest weakness is putting up with rote questions like that. I've heard this question in each and every interview I've attended. I should have come to the understanding that the person asking the question is just casting about for a question, and he really doesn't care about the answer unless it turns about to be a complete disaster.

On careful reflection, my biggest fault is not asking you, "What is your biggest fault?"

Re the SEAL/dog pic: once upon a time I had a lab/newfie mix. Never left my side unless I had to leave him.  At 8 years old, he got sick (liver cancer) and I had to put him down.  It was the worst experience of my life, but, as he never left my side during life, I couldn't leave his during his death.  I made the vet lay him out on the floor so he could pass in my arms.  I don't confuse animals for people, but their loyalty is real.  The dog in that pic was apparently adopted by the SEAL's best friend.  Good things happen, sometimes.

As a manager who had used a variant on that question, I think it does have value.

Yes, to an extent you are just expecting a safe answer, but you would be amazed what people admit to. I usually paired it with asking for a specific strength, and that also would be revealing; "I can't think of one." was depressingly common.

Hmmm, no, not really. Nothing's close to the airport, it's sort of all by itself, though the train will get you to Hong Kong Island in 30 minutes or so. There're some decent airport eats, though. Maxim outside security is half-decent dim sum, and inside security, Tasty has some excellent congee in the morning, if you're into that sort of thing, and there are a couple of other places worth patronizing, in an order-and-grab-your-tray. They've made an effort to have some good restaurants open counters at the airport.

Yeah, that's why I come up with a weesh answer every time, never 'I don't know.' (It's harder to do in another language.)

In a firm less than 50 people it means I'm being interviewed by an amateur. Not that I get to pick and choose, of course. However, it's lazy. It's as lazy as the reflexive answer heard time and time again, "I'm a perfectionist and I know that not everybody is as hawt, cool, and insanely smart as I am. I accept my weakness ... will you?"

251 Good evening moron and moronettes.

I hope all you NE'ers and NC'ers are tucked away safely. God bless you all and keep you safe.

I spent the entire afternoon at the beach in Fernandina. The waves were huge but it was hard to tell once they started tearing the dunes down. Every now and then I was able to get a photo with a person for perspective but, for the most part, other than surfers, folks were keeping their heads on straight and their asses out of the water.

I did get this one video clip. Frankly, it doesn't adequately show just how much erosion occurred from a storm hundreds of miles out at sea.

I have a busted chimney cap & crushed gutter spout I need to replace

no serious damage to my roof, just 3 shingles that need replacing

I discovered I have a white birch tree, which means, apparently, that it falls over easily and that the next big storm that I have, there is a good chance the whole tree could go

269 One question you can ask that few candidates do is to ask the interviewer something about themself (professionally).  Such as how did you get into this field, what do you like about your job/company, what advice would you give someone starting out in this field, etc.  People like to talk about themselves and they'll like that you showed an interest in them.  Advice-type questions are also flattering.

279 God-damn this state:

California lawmakers escalated their war with Amazon.com Inc. on Thursday with a fresh attack aimed at the Internet giant's refusal to collect taxes on its sales, which a new law requires.

The legislative move would halt Amazon's campaign to put a referendum on the June ballot asking voters to overturn the state's Internet sales tax law, which took effect July 1.

In a bit of legislative legerdemain, the state Senate Appropriations Committee took the language of that law, tweaked it and put it into a so-called urgency bill. As an urgency bill, the legislation, should it pass, would nullify the existing law, invalidating Amazon's voter petition, and the new law would be immune from a referendum.

One more suggestion about interviewing.  If you have a negative opinion about any former boss, workplace or job, practice in advance how you'll answer questions about it.  It can be surprisingly hard to not say something negative if it's the truth.  Figuring out in advance what you'll say gives you the opportunity to find out where you may stutter and stumble around before the actual interview.

Good luck in the interview!

351 284 God-damn this state:

While I'm not for encouraging illegals to stick around, if $$ is a factor to your safety and investment, you might want to call Jose and the boys.  They'll most likely do it for $500 or less.

Then again, our neighbor had a crew of guys taking out dead trees after Isabel and they were trying to get some more bidness since our ancient oaks adjoin the yard they were working in.  Their first bid for one big-arse tree was $1,000.  When I declined, one of the guys came to the door and dropped to $750.  After another "no," they did it for $500.  Funny, they asked that I make the check out to a different name than was on the tree-service truck...

363 295 One more suggestion about interviewing.

Yeah. Saying pretty much anything negative about a previous employer or job is usually the kiss of death in an interview. It's pretty much guaranteed that the person interviewing you immediately pictures you talking the same way about him, six months from now.

Posted by: chemjeff at August 26, 2011 08:15 PM (s7mIC)

409 Then again, our neighbor had a crew of guys taking out dead trees after Isabel and they were trying to get some more bidness since our ancient oaks adjoin the yard they were working in.  Their first bid for one big-arse tree was $1,000.  When I declined, one of the guys came to the door and dropped to $750.  After another "no," they did it for $500.  Funny, they asked that I make the check out to a different name than was on the tree-service truck...

The least expensive estimate I had on the massive sycamore in my backyard was $1100. One day I awoke and there were a bunch of men swinging like monkeys from the very tall pine trees across the street from me. It was pretty amazing to watch them work. I waited until they looked like they were about to quite for the day and asked them how much they'd charge. They said if they could do it the next day, after fnishing with the pine tree job, and they didn't have to make a seperate trip back out, they'd do it for $400. And, they would grind the stump.

WHAT?!

They didn't even try to negotiate me down. I would have gone $800 without batting an eye but they offered $400 out of the gate. I took them up on the offer and then tipped them $100.

So, there seems to be a potential strategy at hand. CJ: Just wait until you see a tree company in your neighborhood and tag on at the end of their day. It worked for both RushBabe and me.

You just reminded me. As I was driving out to the Fernandina today I had Hannity on the radio. He had a woman come on who started out sounding okay and then made me wonder if she weren't concern-trolling him. After going on ad on about how Perry is trying to appeal to the Huckabee voters, SH asked her if she weren't speaking code for "evangelicals". Her response..."No. I love that about him because I'm a Christian. I'm actually a Mormon."

Say what?

I know that the name of the church is The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints but their beliefs are so different in some ways, I never thought of them as Christian. Catholics are Christian. Baptists are Christian. Lutherans, etc.... but I never thought of Mormons being Christians.

I consider them Christian and they consider themselves Christian.  They believe Jesus is the son of God who died and was resurrected.  To me, that's enough, despite all of the many differences between their religion and mine.

But even if they weren't Christian, I don't care.  I care how they live their lives in my community, how they treat each other (to some extent), and how they treat me.  They're good citizens, good families, and good friends.

Mormons aren't Christians, by any rational definition.  Catholics. Lutherans, Othodox and Coptic can all trace their roots to the Jerusalem Church.  Mormons came along in the 19th century and just coopted the same cast of characters in a belief system that has no relationship to Christian doctrine.

Been holding up ok. Its a little hard, but I seem to be managing better than my brother and father.  I guess I'm doing ok, because as hard as it is to believe, later in the night after she died I had asked her for some kind of sign she was ok. The next day an ailment that was getting worse, and had been nagging me for almost 6 months had vanished . It made it hard to build guitars. What I decided to do in her memory is to build a very ornate memorial guitar . I haven't finalized the design, but I pretty much know what I will do. I was actually playing classical  for her at her side when she passed. She died no more that15 seconds after I played her favorite. I guess the best I can do is build a special guitar in her honor, seeing I'm pain free and back at it. I would like to give it to dad seeing he also plays, but I'm not sure if he can handle it.

How he feels about the new CERN report that says all the current climate models are bogus for one. If that doesn't work ask him how he feels about  this from Ann Coutler.

Thanks to advances in microscopes, thousands of such complex mechanisms have been found since Darwin's day. He had to explain only simple devices, such as beaks and gills. If Darwin were able to come back today and peer through a modern microscope to see the inner workings of a cell, he would instantly abandon his own theory.

It is a mathematical impossibility, for example, that all 30 to 40 parts of the cell's flagellum -- forget the 200 parts of the cilium! -- could all arise at once by random mutation. According to most scientists, such an occurrence is considered even less likely than John Edwards marrying Rielle Hunter, the "ground zero" of the impossible.

Nor would each of the 30 to 40 parts individually make an organism more fit to survive and reproduce, which, you will recall, is the lynchpin of the whole contraption.

As Michael Behe, biochemist and author of "Darwin's Black Box," explains, even a mechanism as simple as a three-part mousetrap requires all three parts to be working together at once. Otherwise, you don't get a mousetrap that catches half as many mice -- and thus might win a survival of the fittest competition -- you don't get a mousetrap at all.

490 Ynot, it doesn't matter. But it is something I would like to understand.

---

My husband did a lot of reading before we moved to Utah.  He has done a lot of reading in comparative religions and mythology for pleasure (he's weird!).  I gather that the construction of the LDS faith does involve a melding of a lot of different belief systems, including lifting a lot of the terminology from them.

I have a sort of different approach to it.  I just go to things.  I participate in some of the more secular relief society and welfare projects and social events.  I guess my feeling is that I'd rather not delve into what my friends and neighbors believe, but simply take them as they come.  It's worked for me.

Incidentally, I have the same philosophy about anyone.  I just don't spend any time thinking about it, frankly, because I don't want to spend time critiquing other peoples' beliefs.  For example, I really do not get the religious sects that are not hierarchical and that are based on literal interpretations of bible texts.  In that sense, the LDS church makes much more sense to me than what I guess are the Evangelical churches.

Anyway, if you want to learn about the LDS faith, they have an extensive web presence and, of course, anyone from their faith would be happy to talk with you.  You should be able to find your local stake or ward on the web.

my gramma was very special to me since she had me the whole time when i was very small.  she went to all my horse shows was my biggest fan for so many years. was my best friend till dementia got her so bad, it took her away.

she didnt know me any more.

the day before she died i had been visiting and just talking to her about anything while she was laying in bed. Telling her about the farm, what i was doing, the horses she loved so much when she had been herself. I couldnt tell if she could hear me. but i talked and talked like she could. The last day, i saw her and she sat up, looked at me and said:

"you remind me of the little girl who came last night and told me all about her horses. You look just like my granddaughter Gushka."

and then she winked... like she knew it was Gushka all along, and knew i doubted she knew it.

later that day after struggling to breathe more and more, she sat straight up in bed and held out her arms like she was reaching for someone. She had the happiest, gladdest, look--like she had seen the most wonderful thing. then she went limp and just couldnt breathe any more.

now i always believed in a better place. But my uncle the atheist was rocked to his core and has decided to take an all new look at life. Since that moment hes been a changed man.

but i will never forget how, for that last little exchange between us, i think she recognized me, knew i had been with her talking to her, and wanted me to know it.

Yes, except for one thing.  The parking.  We are flanked by a family of 11 kids, most of whom seem to have cars, and across the street from another family of 11.  Thank goodness we're on a straight street and not a cul de sac or we'd never be able to get in and out of the driveway!  We're thinking of starting a valet parking service on Sundays when all of the kids come home for Sunday dinner.  Might make some good change that way.

576 Stevie Nicks appeared on The Voice and was terrific. She sounded great but, even more, had the kind of confidence that allowed her to graciously share the stage and allow the young guy who was competing to shine.

well my life experience has been a little different. lol
my friends arent exactly high maintenence housewives who just go shopping and think the end all be all of life is being a mommy or having a career.

Tho i heard a HILARIOUS story from Aurouchs about someone we both knew who would not swallow and ran flailing from the room to find a sink to spit in... his description of the arms flapping particularly killed me.

I was like ok but if you swallowed then wouldnt that get rid of it faster?

i see spitting with a lot of fanfare or even taking it on the face (which is just a clever way to avoid cum in your mouth) as an essential rejection of the guy you are blowing.

quid pro quo sex is just bein a whore. withholding for a purpose is ugly, unless hes into that and youre his dominatrix. But thats all transactive and not a relationship, and certainly not loving as i understand it.

Then again i know guys who hate the coochie and would never DREAM of kissing it. ok then why should i blow you?  if everyones clean and takes care of themselves then it should be ok. Sadly too often i know its not... I hear about that too. oh do i hear.

that said , i knew i loved Grim when he came in from training and hadnt washed properly in at least seven weeks, and we were on the floor before he got in the door and we kicked the front door closed as we were taking each others clothes off. And the thing is -- after something like that, you have little "knowing" smiles just between the two of you. Where Aurochs and his chicken wouldn't ever have anything like that, no matter how many times it happened.

Grim both have a sense of humpour about the fact he planned to take a shower first. but we are total geeks an couldnt wait.

what was hilarious about the arm flapping chicken woman holding her breath was that she considered herself a sexy and worldly woman who knows her way around the bedroom. Poor Aurochs. he couldnt keep from laughing out loud and she was mortally offended and always held it against him.

if that had been us we'd have laughed like retards for years over it. TOGETHER. But acting like that, like i said seems pretty stupid. Swallow and take a drink of wine or coke by the bed to rinse the taste out. Its cooler.

I'm given to understand that certain foods may daunt even the most practical....asparagus and curry have been mentioned. But lovemaking isn't something that goes point-by-point and has a scorecard. When it works, just about anything works ("I prefer to be clean, but there was this one time....."). And when it's a head-trip going in, you get the release without the deeper connection (buck-buck-buckaw!).

you know the way i started looking at this subject tonight is in terms of rejections vs acceptance. You know thats what withholding is--strategic rejection as punishment, to get a different result. I DONT think thats fair. i do think that is emotional abuse.

Now someone making you do it when you really dont want it is abuse too. no doubt. but if youre feeling like "well i could, but i wont cuz he didnt [fill in the blank]" thats just plain fucked up.

but then i dont get having casual sex like kids do in college now with all these hook ups, either, tho i get all kind of things most people consider kinda esoteric

Sex is a hardwired process that promotes pair-bonding. Because it performs system-calls into deep protected-mode kernel functions, there are security risks. For this reason, and others, it should be used with caution and only in ways that are complementary to its intended purpose.

May produce subsequent generation if used properly.

Sex is a hardwired process that promotes pair-bonding. Because it performs system-calls into deep protected-mode kernel functions, there are security risks. For this reason, and others, it should be used with caution and only in ways that are complementary to its intended purpose.

May produce subsequent generation if used properly.

this is why i think casual hookups are unwise. i think they are bad for your soul. like youre tearing little pieces off.

714 I'm of the opinion that evangelicals have it right on that count... if your spouse wants it, give it up! If you're not exactly in the mood... well, you kind of signed up for it, so do your duty.

Gushka and I were in agreement on this on a thread a couple of weeks ago.

No matter how tired you are. No matter how pissy a day you had at work

No person willingly having sex can not have fun.

Just go with it and, when you're done, you'll sleep better and won't be angry anymore.

It wasn't her real name; it was sort of a front-name to protect her spirit. But, yeah, she was already basically called Little Tramp.

You know it!  BTW, just north of Raleigh we have rain but that's about it. We're expecting Irene to bring her sodden ass ashore sometime around 8 AM in the vicinity of Moorhead and then she'll traipse like a trollop through the Sailor-infested area of Norfolk/Virginia Beach and blow someone.

770 The awning lives.....

Posted by: NC Ref at August 27, 2011 01:23 AM (/izg2)

771 It's not even raining right now at the Refuge but it has been on and off all night. I'm expecting that to change by 8 AM.
Totally not storm related, I've been playing with my Mosin. It was missing one of the barrel bands so I ordered one, that's the only thing missing from the rifle. It's a dead accurate shooter, I have to say that.

Posted by: GGE, Back In The Horde! at August 27, 2011 01:28 AM (sILPb)

772

I am still in a little bit of shock that this guy is hoping it falls. This is someones livelyhood. Oh well, anything for the story.

Root for the awning.

Posted by: GMB at August 27, 2011 01:30 AM (wY55N)

773 So now the armory at the Refuge may or may not contain two Rooskie rifles, one Jap rifle, one American rifle, one American shotgun and one Italian shotgun as well as an Austrian pistol.
I'd like to get a Winchester 700 BDL in .30-06 just to round out the rifles and I'd like a wheelgun, either .44 mag or .357 mag. I shot a 1911 pattern and decided that I don't want one, I'll stick with the Groks I think.

Posted by: GGE, Back In The Horde! at August 27, 2011 01:36 AM (sILPb)

774 Well I'm off to get ready to go, we will be observing the hurricane by putting suspension under a 72 Mustang today. Later roonz and roonettez, see you on tonights ONT!
