Overnight Open Thread - Holiday Weekend Edition
— Maetenloch

Welcome to virtual Saturday. And don't forget that tomorrow is the official Infamous Memorial Day ONT memorial. Which I will no doubt regret having.

The Agony of Defeat

Morons of a certain age will well remember the Agony of Defeat guy during ABC's Wide World of Sports intro. Well here Lileks reminisces and does a little research: It turns out his name is Vinko Bogataj and his crash was from a 1970 skiing competition in West Germany.

Midway down the ramp for that jump, Bogataj realized that the conditions had made the ramp too fast. He attempted to lower his center of gravity and stop his jump, but instead lost his balance completely and rocketed out of control off the end of the ramp, tumbling and flipping wildly, and crashing through a light retaining fence near a crowd of stunned spectators before coming to a halt.
After he retired from skiing he became a coach, and a painter, and a forklift driver. And, thanks to the weekly viewing of his wipeout, a celebrity:
Meanwhile, having retired to his quiet, private life in Slovenia, Vinko Bogataj was unaware of his celebrity, and so was quite confused to be asked to attend the 20th anniversary celebration for Wide World of Sports in 1981. He was stunned when other, more famous athletes present, such as Muhammad Ali, asked him for his autograph

Weiner-gate Update: Not Just A Boobie Man
So it turns out that Rep Weiner (D-Cockpic) was also DMing a high school girl and this porn star. So at least we know that he's not a boob size-ist.

"Women Don't Lie"
Well of course they do:

I am now appalled to think that I was one of these women who thought that women donÂ’t lieÂ…and where there smoke thereÂ’s always a fire. Despite having raised a beautiful son, I was a sexist. Then I started doing research. There have been studies done since the 80s citing the percentage of rape allegations that are false. Some studies say as high as 60%. People who have been dealing with this for years have tried to tell us that women do lie. But we havenÂ’t wanted to hear.
So do children. And all humans. How did people brainwash themselves and society that entire groups of humans are somehow exempt from well human behavior?

PR Guru: Arnold Schwarzenegger ‘Will Not Be Back’

“America right now is a very cynical place and for good reason,” Levine told me. “Arnold Schwarzenegger has gifted America with another reason to be cynical. By the way, societies that are profoundly cynical are not healthy societies.”

“Before the scandal, his political career was over (since he did such a poor job as Governor). Now, since the scandal, any kind of fantasy he may have had with a future in politics — appointed or otherwise — is non-existent. He is politically radioactive,” Levine added.

Given that his leading man roles are mostly behind him it's unclear where Arnold will go next. Rom-coms would normally be a good choice except that he's also currently radioactive to women.

New Elevators Sort Users by Rank
In future elevators take you:

The elevators at the 13-story Curtis Center in downtown Philadelphia, are built so the most senior executives can punch into the computer that they would like to see certain employees upon arrival. When employees swipe their ID cards to call the elevator in the lobby, they can be rerouted to the bossÂ’s floor.

7 Rules To Avoid Getting Bed Bugs When You Travel

Luckily, after doing lots of research on how to proceed, I didn’t—wonderful, since the average person spends $4,000 treating their home for bed bugs. But in talking to others, I’ve found many who were not as lucky. This whole experience has made me a much more cautious traveler, and so I wanted to pass on all my learnings to you.
These are all probably good ideas but after reading them you'll never want to sleep in a hotel bed ever again. Or you could make your own DDT.

Women Really Do Love the Silent, Brooding Type
Which is why Adam Carolla always advises during an early date suddenly cursing and turning off the car radio during a random song. And of course absolutely refuse to talk about it. Apparently chicks dig that.

A bit.  Nintendo is supposedly announcing their next console.  Mass Effect 3 will get coverage probably with some of it mentioning that they'll be allowing male-male romance in it.  Drake's Deception on PS3 and Batman Arkham City.  Bioshock Infinite and Star Wars The Old Republic also.  Basically anything that G4 has talked about.  They'll be doing coverage of it starting June 6 I believe.

52 there aren't enough WW 1 movies out there Which is sad because didn't the last living WW1 veteran just pass away not too long ago? There's also a dearth of Korean War movies.

Yeah, that too.

There are too many Vietnam and WW 2 movie, or to be more specific there are too many bad ones. I watched about an hour of Miracle at St. Anna and couldn't believe how bad it was on every level.

Joyeaux Noel is a decent german WW 1 movie about the Christmas truces that broke out in the first two years of the war.

A Very Long Engagement more of a love story set during WW 1 in France.

I think there was a movie about Verdun but I've never seen it.

Lawrence of Arabia, which was a good movie. And Galipolli.

Other than that I can't think of too many more

134 Word of warning about bedbugs - if you're going into a hospital, be careful. That's where I probably picked up the ones I got - I hadn't travelled, etc, but I spent an overnight in the hospital after some minor surgery. Luckily I reacted badly to the bites (some people don't react at all), and we identified and treated the problem before it got out of hand. The treatment was pricey enough, and then there was several hundred dollars in dry-cleaning and the necessary disposal of my couch. Nasty little vermin.

166 Sociobiology idea on the chicks dig brooding men angle.
We are evolutionarily designed to live in smallish tribes (100-200 ppl). Probably with mild polygamy -- ie top dudes get an extra wife or two (maybe just as mistresses) and bottom dudes get nothing, but most dudes just get one chick.

Say a single chick sees a happy dude. What does this mean? It means he's probably doing well and in a stable relationship -- ie not available.

What does brooding signal? Relationship trouble. Things are going poorly with his current chick -- which means he's available. Time to swoop in and form new emotional bonds before another chick does, or his old chick repairs the relationship.

Now, this isn't conscious. It's just hard-wired into women to find a brooding dude more attractive. Like men are built to find young, fertile women attractive. And women are built to find high status men attractive.

Happy + high status = taken.
Brooding + high status = available.

It's also an all-things-being-equal situation. Brooding can't compensate for a third chin and festering sores.

WW1 was awful, with about 16,000,000 military killed, but WW2 was something like 25,000,000 military killed, and another 40,000,000-50,000,000 civilians.

(Seriously, the trick is to find where they hide. Then it is pretty easy to kill them all. They are not like lice...) $4000? Heh......suckers!

This is one of the things that makes this country so great.

We build weapons the likes of which the world has never seen so that we can bring home more of our young men from the battlefield.

It is a fact of war that perhaps we are losing sight of! We need to kill enough of the bad guys so that the rest of them run away.

It may be simplistic and cruel, but it will, in the long run, save our soldiers and sailors and airmen.

220 I can think of several reasons why World War I is underrepresented in film.

1.  No villains. In WWII, the enemy were some of the vilest regimes in history. The people who brought us the Holocaust and the Rape of Nanking. So a WWII film has Villains. But WWI? About the worst thing the Germans did was set fire to a library in Louvain, and may have been trigger-happy about executing people as partisans. In general the two sides were morally on the same level.

2.  No decisive battles. In WWII there were hundreds of engagements in which two forces met, fought, and one or the other was defeated. These battles had important effects on the war -- taking a bridge or holding a beach meant something. Whereas in WWI the battles on the Western front were mostly along the lines of "spend 10,000 lives to take that hill, which is half a mile closer to Berlin than where we started." Only in the autumn of 1914 and in 1918 were any battles meaningful.

3.  The period seems vaguely ridiculous. WWI styles look silly today. Can anyone take Kaiser Wilhelm seriously with his Dali mustache and pointy helmet? Or the British leadership who all look like P.G. Wodehouse characters?

I first read Mosiers "Myths of the Great War" and started to wonder some. But he could be a crank. Then I read a couple of books by Zuber on the opening battles (Ardennes 1914 and one on Mons) and he uses acutal German unit reports to contradict the usual story.

Another supporting item was I had always heard that the reason three British Battlecruisers blew up with all hands at Jutland was a 'mechanical design issue' that was fixed after that. What is actually was was the British wanted to fire faster because their accuracy was so poor that they piled explosives in the turret and removed all the shielding doors between the turret and the magazine. When the Germans hit the turret, the ship blew in half and sank. Repeat two more times. Over 1000 dead per ship.

Crazy southern Chinese dude became convinced he was, I'm not shitting you, the younger brother of Jesus. Yes, that Jesus. He led a rebellion to overthrow the Manchu and spread Christianity.

20 million people died.

Another crazy thing was he was eventually repulsed at Shanghai by the imperial forces who were led by ... an American, Frederick Townsend Ward. Ward was a mercenary who fought all over the freaking planet and finally ended up in Shanghai leading the Imperial Army in possibly the bloodiest civil war in history.

247 No decisive battles.

Posted by: Trimegistus at May 29, 2011 10:27 PM (phzGf)

There were quite a few decisive wins - but most of them involved the Germans winning over the Russians.

254 Here's something to consider about World War I:  total Allied deaths were about 5.7 million soldiers, over 52 months, which works out to about 110,000 men a month.

Which means all the deaths of the Iraq War since 2003 amount to a little more than a day of World War I.

Think about all the fuss, all the emotion over the Iraq War casualties (at least, while Bush was in office) -- now imagine losing that many every day, for four years.

That's World War I. That's what killed European civilization. The most advanced, civilized, humane nations in the history of the world spent four years in a conflict which even at the time they all recognized was being fought for absurd reasons. And ten million soldiers died.

259 I first read Mosiers "Myths of the Great War" and started to wonder some. But he could be a crank. A bit of a crank, yes. "Myths of the Great War" is actually a pretty good revisionist look at WWI, presents the idea that it was the Americans that largely won the war for the Allies in 1918 (an idea I totally agree with). But he doesn't really make a good case near the end of the book. Too bad, because I think he's right. However, he tried doing the revisionist thing again and again with WWII, like it was his schtick rather than a serious examination of the war.

290 What I find funny about WWII is there's this idea that the Germans were meticulous planners, when most of there operations were planned less well than a families summer vacation. It's not as much that they were meticulous planners as much as they had the dedicated professional General Staff structure that was much more competent than their adversaries. At least up until around 1942-43 or so. A lot of that was also residual awe of the old Prussian General Staff organization which in the 1870s and beyond was the most advanced professional military bureaucracy the world had ever seen. So much so that almost every modern military uses variations on the old Prussian model for GS career tracks.

291 North Africa and Norway come to mind, not to mention Russia.

Posted by: Oldcat

"Barbarossa" was well planned (initially). but the Germans were surprised at how many prisoners, casualties they inflicted and the Red Army DIDN'T collapse.  The Russians just kept calling up more reserves and mobilizing more men, and withdrawing deeper into Russia.  After the end of Summer 1941, there was a conflict among the High Command as to what the direction of the campaign should take, also. That conflict led to problems right up until the really bad weather hit and the Germans were sort of unprepared for it. The Winter of 1941 was also exceptionally bad even for a Russian winter.

But you're right about North Africa - as Rommel himself said, they just sort of "slithered into North Africa", without much real planning.

More bad planning in regards to the submarine war in the North Atlantic.  Individual skill and improvisation by U-boat commanders could not substitute for clear strategic use of the U-boat.  Compare this with the US submarine campaign in the Pacific which was actaully successful in bringing Japan to its knees -with fewer but better subs (overall).

Well it worked pretty well in Africa and destroyed the Russian army 1.5 times over. Too bad for them the Russians built their army a second and third time over.

There's another funny example from WWI. As the war started, the French realized that they got  a lot of their chemicals needed for produciton from Germany. The Germans realized that the supply of Nitrites from Chile might - and were - stopped at once by the Royal Navy.

They would have been in big trouble until a chemist managed to figure out how to make nitrites from scratch before their ammo ran out.

Posted by: Oldcat

The Japanese expected their new defense perimeter, ie - the many new islands taken and fortified,  to keep the US at bay.

The US Navy had to invent a new way to maintain logistics over vast areas of the Pacific, which allowed the to skip some Japanese strongholds, like Rabaul.

Rabaul was to be the "Gibraltar of the Pacific". They died on the vine, so to speak.

The Japanese were extremely tenacious fighters, and it was a very cruel war. My Dad was a veteran of that war - and it was ugly. Every man I ever knew that was a soldier or Marine in the Pacific War hated the Japs. Some eventually got over it.

Well 'let' is a little excessive. They were about 50 miles off when we were crossing the Rhine, and if we'd sent an armored column there they could have brushed it aside. Makes no difference, Roosevelt was already going to give to the Russians no matter who took it.  Patton was just outside of Prague, and was pulled back.

There was a good book - I think it was called 'The Last 100 Days" about those times. A reporter was with a Russian unit taking a town, and the leader summoned the mayor. Mayor comes up, officer shoots him. Tells reporter - "We shoot all mayors". There was official looting - pretty much every factory was packed up and shipped to Russia. Not to mention unofficial looting.

The Japanese expected their new defense perimeter, ie - the many new islands taken and fortified, to keep the US at bay.

The US Navy had to invent a new way to maintain logistics over vast areas of the Pacific, which allowed the to skip some Japanese strongholds, like Rabaul.

Posted by: Reader C.J. Burch writes.... at May 29, 2011 11:07 PM (sJTmU)

As I said, this assumes we would quit. Even without the bypassing they had no response to our offensives. Thousands of their troops starved to death in Guadalcanal before we had total naval superiority.

The new logistics let us do things fast, and cheaply (relative to what it might have been).  But once our subs destroyed their merchant marine, all those troops could not be fed.

our marines saw some pretty horrifying shit. ive seen released wartime footage of the battles in the pacific and i couldnt make it thru them.  even PBS censored alot of it, it was THAT bad. close quarters combat in heavy brush and jungle, every bit as terrible as the eastern front. the difference was that in the eastern front, the russians just THREW men at the german lines....in the pacific there was strategy involved.

one video i seen there was german sheppard dogs leaping on jap soldiers with marines hollering commands at each other on tarawa. it doesnt sound bad when i write it, but holy god it was a complete nightmare to watch.

You help to make the point for him. You received an education and are paying off your bills. It's rough now, but someone who works as hard as you do will not be in this predicament forever. At some point the student loan will be paid off and all the while you'll be improving your lot in life.

As someone who spent her youth in section 8 housing and on foodstamps, being raised by a single mother, I tend to agree with the statement. In this country, we have options. They may not always be attractive options, but we all have means for escaping poverty.

we couldve rolled into berlin also, but we held back in a sense of honor to let the russians finish the job. the russians sucked by the way and i have no doubt we couldve taken berlin in half the time with half the casualties, yes we were that good, no sense in feeling ashamed about it.

They were well dug in, tried to sell their lives at a hight cost. In early battles, we might not have had the techniques down, later we did. So we knew how to do it, but even in the best case rooting troops that won't surrender out of highly fortified terrain costs a lot of lives. And the tactics you use - grenades down holes, burning them out with flame, etc, don't leave the survivors with happy memories.

But even early on, there was never a question of if we would take the islands we attacked, it was just a question of how long and at what cost.

Not always a whole lot. There wasn't much room to maneuver in most places. It was just the Marines or the Army coming straight in to take on the Japs. Those guys were plenty brave and tough. But it's why there was no coherent unit narratives comparable to the 101st Airborne (BoB), because so many combat units just got decimated after a couple of amphibious landings/operations.

You're right, though, and it doesn't make a pretty story, how cruel and brutal the infantry combat was in the Pacific.  Most of the story telling is Euro-centric about WWII, and people avoid just how ugly the war in the Pacific was, especially China, where the Japs literally killed millions of Chinese just for hates sake.

A similar thing happened for the line infantry in the West. They just kept men fighting until they got killed, then added more. A running 'not gag' in the movie The Big Red One was the vets in the squad not learning the replacement's name after a while, because he was just gonna die.

355 The British have taken to heart the old notion that "the winners write the history books." They've decided that if they write the histories, they can make themselves the winners in every conflict they've ever been in.

Consider this: it's an article of faith that Britain hasn't been successfully invaded since 1066.

Except . . . how did Henry VII get to be king? He had no legitimate claim to the throne. And he did have an army and fought his way in. But since he did such a good job of co-opting the English nobility afterwards, they decided that he hadn't invaded the country, he was the rightful king defending his claim.

Then in WWII when Australia was threatened, her troops were in North Africa.

But on the final turn he had a lapped car on the inside line and couldn't go all the way to the lowline and didn't lay off the gas enough and wrecked into the wall.  Took enough speed off to allow Dan Weldon to pass him for the victory.  The Rookie still came in second though even with the wreck.

BEIJING (AFP) – China has hit back at claims it violated Vietnam's marine sovereignty in a new spat over disputed areas of the South China Sea, accusing Hanoi of harming Beijing's interests in the region.

470 well like I said he doesn't like goofy--thinks he's too goofy or something.

Heh, I never liked Goofy much either except in the "How To" cartoons or the other tutorial-like ones from the 50s. Those I thought were great but I guess it wasn't Goofy, per se. I guess Walt decided Mickey needed a pet dog and an anthropomorphized dog as a friend?

If I could find more a solo Stitch as the Emperor or Jedi or something I'll get that. I'm also keeping an eye out for Han Solo and Obi Wan. I don't think Obi Wan is as popular, though. There's barely an Stitch merchandise except stuffed animals. I got this yesterday. I think it might be too girly for him.

Also wanted to take the opportunity to say thanks to all the morons-ettes here who serve in the military or have served, or have sons/daughters who do., and to express my gratitude!

Thanks buzzion.

I had the F1 race on the DVR.  There was a rare situation where 1st through 3rd were all within 3 seconds of each other.  They had been going going at it for about 7 laps when they came up on some lapped cars and of course there was a crash in front of them that nearly took out the leaders with 5 laps left.  They stopped the race to clean up the mess and take one of the drivers off in an ambulance but before they resumed the race my DVR stopped recording...dammit.

Yep.  I could have come up with better ideas for the Prequels than he did.  Hell could even have made it so you could watch all 6 in a row and still have the shocker that the man in the Darth Vader suit is actually Anakin in Empire Strikes back.  All you need really is one more Jedi to be trained by Obi-Wan that goes to the darkside, leave a little bit of doubt as to who was put in the suit, and a discussion between Obi-Wan and others about not telling Luke and Leia about Anakin's fall.  And wouldn't need to have him slaughter a bunch of children for it either.

Killing adult Jedi wouldn't be enough?  Clone wars should have been the first and second one.  His fall should have been achieved in the Second with doubts, to give you the belief that he could be redeemed.  Third one should have been the Jedi's failing efforts to stop the Emperor and his Dark Jedi with a last final desperate act that fails but forces the suit and Obi-wan and Yoda going into hiding.

See don't even those little pieces of thought sound better than what Lucas did?

My guess is somebody on Lucas' creative team had someone of a background in science and decided to merge together "mitochondria" and "chloroplasts" as Lucas' BS recon to describe the Force.  It would have been better if Force-knowledge was kept (as alluded to in the very first film) as a Zen-thing.

532 And Annakin has extra special loads of 'em because he has no biological father? Like, the Holy Ghost is made of mitichlorions?

The "virgin birth" of Anakin in TPM was bad enough.  But in ROTS, it's strongly hinted that Palpatine himself created Anakin as part of his master plan, by manipulating the Force to create life.

That's right, Emperor Palpatine is Darth Vader's father.  Which made the throne-room scene in ROTJ one big fucked-up family reunion.

533 And also any sane person wouldn't have written so that the defenders of peace and justice in the galaxy were cradle robbers and brainwashers.  I mean really ok cool that Luke at approximately 18-20 years of age is too old to begin training.  But Anakin at basically 9 is too old?  And that they pretty much imply they take them as newborns to start training.

I only saw the first one, but from what I understand the change plays no part in the plot of the three movies. So why change it?

Because Lucas sucks as both a writer and a director, at least when he doesn't have the right people around him to temper his wacky ideas.  'nuff said.

Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at May 29, 2011 09:59 PM (iKEG/)

544 My guess is somebody on Lucas' creative team had someone of a background in science and decided to merge together "mitochondria" and "chloroplasts" as Lucas' BS recon to describe the Force.  It would have been better if Force-knowledge was kept (as alluded to in the very first film) as a Zen-thing.  Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at May 30, 2011 01:48 AM (iKEG/) Yes: in the Luke Skywalker saga, it's strongly inferred (by Yoda, mainly) that anyone with the right orientation of heart and mind can learn to use the Force. In the Annakin Skywalker saga, it becomes a matter of genetic heritage. And like Stalin's Soviet Union and Hitler's Third Reich, small children with early potential are taken from their famies to be raised in training creches. Creepy shit.

I don't know if Hayden Christensen's really the bad actor the prequels gave him a reputation for; I've never seen him in anything else.  But considering who was directing him, and since for 80% of the time he had nothing and no one to play against, I always gave him the benefit of the doubt.  If I'd never seen them in anything else, I'd have assumed Liam Neeson and Samuel L. Jackson were terrible actors.

Heh.  Samuel L Jackson works if he's given the proper role.  I thought he was great in Pulp Fiction.   The problem with casting him as Mace Windu is that Mace is supposed to be a calm, serene character.  Sam L is an overtly emotional actor and works best when he's able to express himself appropriately, even if it is over the top.

Like I said.  I could have written better prequels.  The genetic component isn't even that big of a deal to me.  All you need is people that are Force strong can produce others that are strong in it.  But its not always guaranteed, and even people with no affinity could have potential Jedi children.  And don't have being 9 years old as too young too train, make that the starting point for training, and well look at that I pretty much eliminated Anakin needing to slaughter children.

627 My problem with Unbreakable was that the pacing was too damn slow and there wasn't enough action.  I understand M. Night was going for a more "realistic" superhero film, but still, this was the most boring "superhero" movie I've watched (although I still liked the film overall).  Even Daredevil was more exciting than Unbreakable.  (Forgive me, Lord, for saying that). Posted by: Kratos (Ghost of Sparta) at May 30, 2011 02:24 AM (c0A3e) M. Night has many sins to answer for, like ruining the sweetest children's book of the 20th Century. But as far as his trademark "you-didn't-see-that-twist-coming-did-you" storytelling, he went off the rails with Signs. Cheap rip-off of Day of the Triffids, and just stupid.

One or two episodes of the original "Clone Wars" animated cartoon shorts that were aired during the time period between Episode 2 and 3 had Obi-Wan wearing trooper armor, though modified to also include a jedi robe look.  Google image results.

723 I've got to examine my long boxes as well.  I think I picked it up around...the...teens?  Hell if I know.  I stuck by it a while.  Peter David is a great writer when he's not preaching.
