Overnight Open Thread - Labor Day Edition

Final hours in the holiday weekend and that booze ain't gonna drink itself.

VDH: The Cheney Memoir: Hype and Reality

Is everything you've heard about it is wrong?

I’m about halfway through the new Cheney memoir, In My Time, and it does not at all resemble the media’s description of it — a highly controversial book preoccupied with scoring points against rivals — which suggests that many of those who have written about it have not read it. Every writer defends his own record, of course, but I haven’t detected any vendettas yet. On occasion, Cheney admits errors of his own, especially unwise press announcements and rash public statements. Although he is critical of Colin Powell in the lead-up to Iraq and afterward, he is more than magnanimous in prior references to the man — no “cheap shots” that I could see.
I'm shocked, shocked to find out that the media would ever misrepresent what Cheney has written.

JC Penney Stops Selling ‘Too pretty for homework’ Shirt

After protests from the usual suspects.

“We agree that the ‘Too pretty’ t-shirt does not deliver an appropriate message, and we have immediately discontinued its sale,” the company wrote of the shirt, which was geared towards girls age 7 to 16.
Yes because girls are such delicate little flowers that if they aren't exposed to 100% positive messages 24/7 they might forsake studying and academics forever. So who's the real sexist here? And whatever happened to all that Grrl! power?

Britain Watch: UK CPS To Take Family's Children Away Permanently For Being Too Fat
How fat are they? Well this obese (the children are in the middle):
article-0-0DB3567600000578-407_468x286.jpg

Okay the kids may be a bit heavy, but is this enough to have them removed from their parents and never allowed to see them again? For the CPS it is.
It all started a few years ago when a young boy banged his head and, because he was angry at his father, called his town’s version of Child Protective Services and accused his father of hitting him. Child Protective Services did exactly what one would expect it to do when dealing with a stable, middle class family — it latched onto it like a piranha or tick, and proceeded to suck the life out of the family.
Four obese children are on the brink of being permanently removed from their family by social workers after their parents failed to bring their weight under control.
In the first case of its kind, their mother and father now face what they call the ‘unbearable’ likelihood of never seeing them again.
Their three daughters, aged 11, seven and one, and five-year-old son, will either be ‘fostered without contact’ or adopted.

"I Did Not Have Sex With That Slave"*
*Stuff Jefferson Said (Vol XIII, Chap.3)
And he was probably telling the truth:

In a book due out Thursday, eminent scholars say it’s unlikely that Thomas Jefferson fathered Sally Hemings‘ children, disputing a decade’s worth of conventional wisdom that the author of the Declaration of Independence sired offspring with one of his slaves.
The debate has ensnared historians for years, and many thought the issue was settled when DNA testing in the late 1990s confirmed that aJefferson male fathered Hemings‘ youngest son, Eston. But, with one lone dissenter, the panel of 13 scholars doubted the claim and said the evidence points instead to Jefferson’s brother Randolph as the father.

Roodharigendag: When Gingers Gather
The original ginger day in the Netherlands:

Eager participants of all ages have painted a Dutch town "ginger" for the annual Redhead Day in the Netherlands.

Thousands of redheads including a legion of children celebrated their day at Breda with picnics, art, workshops and competitions.

(thanks to Michael Rittenhouse)
But as the Lawgiver says in the sacred scrolls, 'Let not the ginger gather, for he will make a desert of your garden as well as his own'.

Uh, yeah.  Kinda creepy.

A lot of people plan their pregnancies by year to avoid certain signs as well (e.g.: Tigers are difficult to raise).  It causes certain years to be much more selective for college as a result.

This, "it reminded me of Lincoln, Nebraska" made me giggle.  And yes, I'm going to to bust on you for a minute.  Someone once told me a town in Ireland was a must visit because, "it reminds me of Chattanooga" - like that's even possible in Ireland.  But it was a nice town and so is Chattanooga.  It's just that the West of Ireland is NOTHING like Chattanooga.

Sorry, just a giggle.

Her: "No, no, my employer pays for it, it doesn't come out of my paycheck."
Me: "Your paycheck would be higher, though, if it weren't for that, so it does effectively come out of your pay."
Her: "But no, it's one of my benefits, it's in addition to my pay, they don't take any money from my salary for it."
Me: [facepalm]

No, I didn't really facepalm, only on the inside. But this is the person who is teaching me health economics this year. Sigh.

181 183 BMI should NEVER be used for children!

it's insane.

my kids are off the charts in height for their age, and like 5th percentile weight . . . and get flagged for high BMI?!?!

b/c it goes by age and you're screwed if you're tall for your age

BMI is a joke. My husband is in the best shape of his life, 13 percent body fat, and his BMI is high.

meaningless. I do feel for that family. What a terrible situation. England is damn scary.

Posted by: BlackOrchid at September 05, 2011 10:37 PM (SB0V2)

They use it on Marines.

If you are a short guy with NO BODY FAT, but work out obsessively and get too big you can get in trouble for being "thick." Everyone knows youre not FAT. But your measurements dont add up. So an exceptionally strong individual can get in trouble cuz hes just not skinny.

226 #175 Adrian, Liberals don't understand that there is only so much money to go around. The idea that an organization has a budget, with a set amount of money that they can spend on personnel, would require logical thought. I had a job where you signed a contract each year. On the contract was listed your salary, the amount paid into the pension fund for you, and the cost of your health insurance. Then it was added so that you viewed the benefits as part of your pay.

Posted by: vice squad at September 05, 2011 06:58 PM (T8LJW)

227 Here is the other thing - having a C-section especially when it isn't needed carries its own set of risks, such as:

"Some of the increased risks for the mother include possible infection of the uterus and nearby pelvic organs; increased bleeding; blood clots in the legs, pelvic organs and sometimes the lungs, says the March of Dimes Further, cesarean birth "is more painful, is more expensive, and takes longer to recover from than a vaginal birth," says the group.

Dying for vanity.  Can't say that isn't a new human trait.

then maybe think about how close to eugenics they got. (an eyelash away) I guess i always  felt like if you wanted to pick sex and all that stuff-- maybe your disposition is such that you would be happier with a particularly attractive showhorse or a show dog to micromanage.

keeps your parts nice too, and you get exercise with training it.

272 Husbands do not belong in the delivery room.  We used to understand this back when we were a civilized society, but the let's-all-get-in-touch-with-ourselves '70s convinced men they all need to be in there right next to the doctors, photographing and filming their wife's hoo-ha through which the baby comes into the world and various other solids and fluids also come into the world along with the baby, for a permanent visual record that nobody in their right minds is ever going to want to look at, the kid will never forgive Dad for, and the mother will use as grounds for divorce if it ever surfaces.

I won't do it.  If I ever get around to having a kid, I'm going to hang out in the waiting room chain-smoking and pacing a hole in the floor the way new fathers are supposed to.

295  A Groom surprises his Bride on the morning of the wedding by peeking in as she makes ready. She tells him he shouldn't see her but is charmed by his protestations of not being able to resist. The bridesmaids step outside while the two talk and after a while he gets that look in his eye. She chastises him, reminding him that she is in her wedding dress and that it took forever to get on properly. He grins and says to her 'there are other options". She gives in and pleases her man.

The Groom arrives in a room full of waiting Groomsmen who, seeing his huge grin, demand to know what he's been up to. Proudly he announces," Boys, I just got the best bj of my life.'

Meanwhile in the Brides room, the ladies want to know where the lady of the hour has been to which she answers, " Girls, I just gave the last bj I'm ever gonna give."

grimmy likes to cook. he hates cook books. he wants to expiriment. he doesnt watch cooking shows that i can discern tho i know he watches TV when i am asleep, i assumed it was pr0n...

i prefer to cook and he clean up the kitchen after. dinner is more reliable that way. I am a decent cook. can make a roast a steak and many variations of pork chops.

in his defense he did learn how to grill from my dad and is getting kinda good at this now, and is slowly mastering his favourite dishes that i usually cook for him. So there is hope for Grim, but when he goes bad in the kitchen he goes bad BIG.

Cleaning is so frustrating to me, because it never ends, especially things like dusting; I mean, ya dust and by the time you're done, it's dusty again. Waste of fricking time.

So he grills a lot, I keep him supplied in his favorite beer, we make a lot of nookie, listen to a lot of music, and hope no one else minds the mess when they come visit. And they keep coming, so it must be okay.

353 MSNBC has a story up about how Obama has spurred gun sales the last 3 years.  Ruger recorded a 400% increase in their stock.
They doubt Perry could have done more for the firearms industry had he been President.
The irony that the anti-gun din (and Obama's affiliation with the Joyce Foundation) has managed to prompt more guns to be sold is golden.

It was also beneath the dignity of one of the Kings of France to bend down to observe the process, which I believe had an effect on the custom, too.

My gran always had her ladies use a birthing chair when the pushing started. She made 'em walk around or rock back and forth on their hands and knees and crawl if they felt more comfortable that way.

Star is on the far limit of possibilities. It just looks so damn pretty in pictures.

She will only be driving to the airport once a week, flying down, staying here for work a few days, then coming back.

And it's not forever. Only until we can find local jobs to fill the gaps.

Heh, mine's Daily Kos. And have you seen that thing on Salon by Matt Stoller? It's being linked all over the web.

I finally got kicked off of Kos because every time one of those hand-wringing threads came up I would post all over the place:

The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger -- a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair. Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night. -- Charles Krauthammer, August 2008

because mommy and daddy act scared of him. they are wary in a way thats hard to fake.

I suspect that the only time the Protocol officer gets a word in edgewise is when Michelle Antoinette is spending "just a few hundred thousand" of the taxpayer's money.....

Whenever I think of DU, I think of the inane "chicken-wire" test results some DU denizen posted in order to "prove" that the fires that burned in the World Trade Center could not have weakened the steel supports...

441 any vegetables you like to add to that recipe? And how much beer do you use? Just a full 11-oz bottle?

Carrots and red taters is usually all I add. Most will add an onion, but I prefer just those two, especially good sweet carrots. How much beer depends on the size of the crockpot, but yes, I usually just dump in the whole bottle.

Posted by: Genetic Tunder at September 06, 2011 12:29 AM (dbYHP)

Here are two start in the morning crock pot recipes:

which recipe? Roast in the crock pot?

1/2 cup bourbon

Trader joes 21 spice salute  Enough to cover palm of hand. Toss onto your meat

carrots

onion (Can substitute one apple of a firm cooking type if you hate onions like Grims tummy does)

Celery and i use the tops because i like em.

Potato (I also like turnips but im weird)

teaspoon Lee& Perrins worstishire sauce

a bunch of HP steak sauce

put enough  beef stock in to barely cover the meat

FORGET UNTIL MEAT IS FALLING APART

Roast easy enough for my kid with issues to make:

Bottle red wine

Package lipton onion soup.

carrots potatos celery

1 can of whole berry cranberry sauce.

put roast in crockpot, smush can of cranberry on top. Dump package of lipton onion soup on cranberry

arrange celry and carrots in empty spaces save potato for later.

cover with wine

forget in crockpot till dinner adding cut up potato about halfway thru day. or not. Use your judgement about flavors unless you are Grim...

My secret ingredient in both is catsup. If it seems like its missing something add some till it tastes right. This can mean three tablespoons. really. catsup.

Im not kidding. salt to taste that personal. but the onion soup does it for me. And the beef stock usually has plenty.

477 March 20th, Steak and a BJ Day.

Every 14th of February men get the chance to display their fondness for
your wife or girlfriend by showering her with gifts, flowers, dinner, shows
and any other baubles that women find romantic.

Secretly...guys feel left out. That's right...left out. There's no
special holiday for the ladies to show their appreciation for their man.
Men as a whole are either too proud or just too embarrassed to admit it,
that is why, as of 2008 a new holiday has been created.

March 20th is now officially "Steak, and a  Blow Job Day."

Simple, effective and self-explanatory...this holiday has been created
so you ladies can have a day to show your man just how much you love him.

No cards, no flowers, no special nights on the town, the name of the
holiday explains it all...just a steak, beer, a blow job & afterwards just keep
your fucking mouth shut for the rest of the day! That's it!

This twin pairing of Valentine's Day and Steak and a Blow Job Day will usher in a new age of love, as men everywhere will try THAT much harder in February to ensure a more memorable March! It's like a perpetual love machine.

The word is already spreading, but as with any new idea, it needs a
little push to start the ball rolling.

So spread the word and help bring love and peace to this crazy world.

498 Packers repeat. How? They lost 11 opening day starters for the 2010 season by the time they got to the playoffs. They proceeded to beat everybody on the road, including the Bears twice. They had two key players, Driver and Woodson leave the game. They beat the Steelers in the Super Bowl.

This year they lost only Cullen Jenkins from the starters, and got back a 1,200 yard rusher... and perhaps the best tight end in the league, in Ryan Grant and Jermichael Finley, respectively.

The coaching staff is excellent, no front office drama, defending champions.

506 Man, I burned the hell out of the roof of my mouth at dinner.

If only some wonderful and beautiful 'Ette would come down and heal it with tender french kisses.

509 @512 With all due respect, Witten is the best TE in the game. I love Jermichael, though I wish he would have spent more than two years at Texas, but he reminds me of Antonio Gates- unguardable on passing downs, but subpar run blocking.

510 Now you have to come and make me meatballs.

Sadly, I don't have the greatest luck with (cooking) Italian food ...

I do fairly well with Chinese ... stir fry and like ... nothing complicated like Peking Duck ...

Am eating a lot of frozen foods cause they have calorie content on the packaging.

The hubby & I are trying a 'real food' diet of 1600 calories.  4 meals of 400 each.

We lost weight on Medifast but gained part of it back.

Haven't had stir fry in a while, either.

I wonder if you can use meatballs in a stir fry.

514 #526: No reason you couldn't, as long as you account for the presence of those Italian spices and choose the vegetables accordingly.

516 Safeway has char sui humbao (Bar B Q pork buns) in the frozen food section.

They steam up in the microwave real good ... wrap in a moist paper towel.  Let cool so no burnt mouth ...

Not exactly a meat ball ... but closer than head of lettuce would be ...

520 Hi Gushka!

Posted by: Robert at September 05, 2011 10:29 PM (4ixH5)

521 oh and my cats are with me,  and i just call them cats, and dont ascribe political opinions to them. Unlike some posters we know. So I am an honest voice in your head, who admits to her cat lady ness.

524 My cat is of the opinion I need to brush my teeth more often so that she can rub against my face.

Not sure if that's a left or right position.

525 mine is sitting on the left side of my lap. but she likes things on time and wants nice things. but shes willing to do her job and eat spiders and hold down the couch all day for her kibble so i guess shes conservative, because they hate change.

527 My Sadie can't hunt to save her life.  She's a demanding slob.  She might be a liberal.

Oh, but speaking of hunting a friend of mine emailed me a crazy pic of his cat decapitating a chipmunk.  The shot is very Wild Kingdom meets The Matrix.

528 I'd marry a lighthoue keeper if it was a nice lighthouse and if she had big 'uns.

539 I was just thinking, you know what kind of story I would like to read?  Or see made into a movie?

I'd like to see a story about the resurrection of all the great dictators in history and how they unite  to conquer the world.

In  the end, the only people opposing them would be a small band of men led by a perky 18 year old blonde girl with pert jugs.

This would be the greatest story ever told.

Posted by: Robert at September 06, 2011 12:12 AM (4ixH5)

540 Yeah, kinda like Buffy the Vampire Slayer only with dictators instead...

Posted by: CanaDave 'You can have my Gibson when you pry it out of my cold dead fingers' at September 06, 2011 12:15 AM (T3vxL)

541 It would be great!

It would be like a who's who of scumbag dictators from Genghis Khan Alexander to Hitler and Stalin and so many more and then the efforts of perky girl with pert jugs and her band of hard assed veteran soldiers and marines to wage a guerilla war and overthrowing them one regime at a time.

Did I mention she'd have pert jugs?

542 Hard to believe that with all the learned scholar power from religious institutions like Hillsdale College that the Jefferson Foundation itself persists in protecting this myth: "Thomas Jefferson fathered at least one of Sally Hemings's children, and quite probably all six" founded entirely on science: http://tinyurl.com/62x399 On the one side there's people with PhDs and medical degrees with their test tubes and computers who believe in DNA (but also in evolution, and that people and chimps came from common ancestors, and that Earth is not 6,000 but almost 4 billion years old, and that God doesn't exist), and on the other there's the Bible and the fact that Jefferson is a founding father looking back two hundred years. It shouldn't even be a contest; but some illegals will do anything to protect their claims to citizenship.

546 I expected SOME of your readers to have read all or part of VP Cheney's book.....guess not.  Over at Lucianne's Connection some of her readers have read part of the book and really like it.  Claim it is very informative and entertaining.  What else could you expect from himself?
A friend who has a hard left father (who I used to think was a very intelligent gentlemen....of well)claims that the summaries she has read say Cheney whines throughout the book.  I did not ask her if she has ever heard a whine in Cheney's voice....I consider her a lost cause as far as politics are concerned.
Dear friend but must consider alternative subjects for discussion.  Perhaps what tee shirts the youths in this country are wearing?
