Rider On The Storm

In 1959, Marine Corps pilot William Rankin was cruising at nine miles above the earth in an F-8 Crusader combat jet when his engine failed and he was forced to eject.

At approximately 6:00 pm, Lt Col Rankin concluded that his aircraft was unrecoverable and pulled hard on his eject handles. An explosive charge propelled him from the cockpit into the atmosphere with sufficient force to rip his left glove from his hand, scattering his canopy, pilot seat, and other plane-related debris into the sky. Bill Rankin had spent a fair amount of time skydiving in his career—both premeditated and otherwise—but this particular dive would be unlike any that he or any living person had experienced before.
Between him and the ground was a large, black storm and as he fell he was caught and trapped within the storm's powerful up and down-drafts. He would become the only human being to ever parachute through a full cumulonimbus “anvil” cloud and live:
At the apex Rankin caught up with his parachute, causing it to drape over him like a wet blanket and stir worries that he would become entangled with it and drop from the sky at a truly terminal velocity. Again he fell, and again the updrafts yanked him skyward in the darkness. He lost count of how many times this up-and-down cycle repeated. “At one point I got seasick and heaved,” he once retold.
Read the rest of the story here to find out what happened to him.

Did the Marine Corps Embellish The Story of Medal of Honor Awardee, Dakota Meyer?
Marine Dakota Meyer was awarded the MOH for his heroic actions in 2009 and in presented with it this September by President Obame in a White House ceremony. But now according to an investigation by McClatchy it appears that the account of his actions that led to the award was full of inaccuracies and was likely embellished by the Marine Corps.
Asked to explain the individual discrepancies and embellishments, the Marines drew a distinction between the citation and the account of Meyer’s deeds that the Marines constructed to help tell his story to the nation. They described that account as “Meyer’s narrative of the sequence of events,” which Marine officials said they didn’t vet…

The Marine officials, who requested anonymity because of the issueÂ’s sensitivity, acknowledged that portions of the narrative were changed from the account Williams submitted. They said that the changes occurred between July, when Obama approved MeyerÂ’s medal nomination, and the September White House ceremony. Inaccuracies were written into the citation and the narrative of MeyerÂ’s deeds, although the narrative contained far more errors and exaggerations.

Note that no one is disputing that Meyers completely deserved the MOH for his actions on Sept. 8, 2009 in the Ganjgal Valley.
What's most striking is that all this probably was unnecessary. Meyer, the 296th Marine to earn the medal, by all accounts deserved his nomination. At least seven witnesses attested to him performing heroic deeds “in the face of almost certain death.”
But as the citation moved up through the command some apparently felt that it needed to be 'improved'.
So how’d the Corps’ narrative of what happened end up being “enhanced” between July and September? McClatchy says USMC brass were irate after Cpl. Rafael Peralta’s MOH candidacy was downgraded in 2004 to a Navy Cross and that they were intent on a Marine being awarded the Medal before Commandant James Conway retired last year. Once they finally had an awardee and a national stage for him at the White House, maybe the temptation to make him more of a superhero than he already is proved too great.

New Fatwa Permits Kidnapping, Imprisonment & Rape of “Infidel Women”
But what about honorable married infidel women? Nope - they get raped too:

On October 28, 2011, the jihadi forum Minbar Al-Tawhid Wal-Jihad published a fatwa by Sheikh Abu Humam Al-Athari, a member of its shariÂ’a council, in which he unequivocally permits mujahideen to capture the infidelsÂ’ women and have sexual intercourse with them, even those who are married, on the claim that their marriage bonds to infidels are dissolved as soon as they are taken captive.
So why hasn't there been a sudden outbreak of lady infidel jihad rapes around the world? Well you see the fatwa only applies when you think you can get away with it:
Al-Athari emphasizes that before deciding to take infidel women captive, “one must consider the gains and losses that will result from this deed, which is to say that if the imam of the Muslims in a given country believes that taking the infidels’ women captive will lead the infidels to band together and rape the Muslims’ women, and that the Muslims are in too weak a state to prevent this, he should forbid taking [infidel women] captive…”
Ah such fine decent human beings.

What's the Most Dangerous Over-the-Counter Drug?
Short answer: Tylenol (acetaminophen).

More people actually die from aspirin overdoses but they're almost all suicides whereas acetaminophen deaths are mostly accidental.

Compared to other over-the-counter drugs, acetaminophen has a relatively narrow safety margin—that is, the difference between a safe-but-effective dose and an overdose is relatively small. Doctors have reported liver failure from as little as 2.5 grams in a day, which is 1.5 grams less than the approved limit.
When I took a class on drugs as an undergraduate I remember being surprised at how low the LD50 dose was for Tylenol, and since then I've been very hesitant about using it and have never mixed it with alcohol.

Do You Offer a One-Night Stand Gift Bag?
Because apparently that's the classy thing to do for all your new special lady friends:

The New York Post is reporting that whenever Derek Jeter has a one-night stand, he keeps a car on call, ready to take the woman home, and stocks it with “a basket of signed memorabilia” to … remember him by?
But if your signature isn't enough, then consider these other thoughtful accessories that your former lady friend might appreciate:
1. Fancy bubble bath, because obviously IÂ’d be taking a shower as soon as I got home, but might as well make it a luxurious bath.
2. Toothpaste, in case IÂ’m not going home and need to be in public.
3. A Starbucks gift card (to pick up coffee on the way to wherever IÂ’m going).
4. Sunglasses, in lieu of extra strength concealer, which would be a weird gift.
5. Coconut water, to hydrate.
6. “I Just Had Sex” T-shirt to wear immediately.

Wrote my share of medal citations back in the day (none for heroism; all service/achievement related) and was on the receiving end of a few.  Most of the time, what I wrote in the original was completely or vey nearly completely redone before it hit the parchment.  Same for one I received; what it said bore slim semblance to what had been done.  I can imagine the level of attention and the politics involved with a MOH would lead to similar results.  IIRC, even the ever-popular Audie Murphy's own recounting of the events that led to his award of The Medal differed to some degree from the official version.

What is good to hear is that McClatchy (and who gives a damn what they care) doesn't like the official wording versus another version of the events.  The Marine deserves The Medal by all accounts; that's what's most important.

50 The Marine Corps as a general rule, do not embellish anything when it comes to awards citing heroism and references to same on the battlefield. If anything, they will downplay it as what good Marines are expected to do. We have a lot of good Marines... This was an OUTSTANDING Marine. Shame on any pustule covered, slimy rat bastard piece of shit.. I mean reporter, to cast doubt on anything concerning heroism. (like they have a reference to draw from) Lots of shit happpens very fast in combat. People see different things from lots of perspectives. The man earned this honor. Leave him be.

52 I came across William Rankin's book while desperately looking for something entertaining to read in the library at Kutztown State College.

It was down in the basement in the tiny children's library room.

The book was fascinating and the recap above is pretty good, however, it omits two astounding details:

1) The canopy of the F-8 failed to detach, Rankin was blown straight through it.

2) Standing bruised and bloody alongside the road, Rankin couldn't hitch a ride for over an hour. He only got picked up after a grandfather, driving with his six year old grandson in a station wagon, passed him. The grandson insisted over and over again that gramps had to go back to pick up "the spaceman".

It's a great book to read, chock full of details of what a pilot has to react to rapidly in an emergency situation.

71 Next door neighbors had two miniature schnauzers, sisters from the same litter. One was in relatively poor health, both pretty old, around 14 years (?). The less healthy one died and about a month later, the completely healthy one went, too. Wierd. We should respond with something similar to what the British general Charles Napier said to the Hindu priests who complained about the Brits halting the practice of tossing widows alive on the funeral pyres of their dead husbands [this was during the British administration of India during the 1800's]

"Be it so. This burning of widows is your custom; prepare the funeral pile. But my nation has also a custom. When men burn women alive we hang them, and confiscate all their property. My carpenters shall therefore erect gibbets on which to hang all concerned when the widow is consumed. Let us all act according to national customs."

I don't get why the long tube fluorescent i have in the garage light up right away but the CFL's take forever.

Sadly, I wouldn't be surprised if the MoH story turned out to be embellished.  I sure hope it wasn't.

Back when I was a SSgt, I remember being tasked with investigating a young Cpl with Marine Forces Pacific back in 1999 or so concerning his "heroic" actions while off duty at a scenic spot on Oahu.  Bad landslide that killed or maimed a lot of tourists.  Somebody up at Camp Smith decided this young Cpl did something heroic and needed the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for it.

I conducted about 20 interviews from military and civilian eyewitnesses and determined that he didn't do anything that warranted any special recognition at all, yet the somebody way up the chain decided he was going to get that medal anyway and I was directed me to draft it up and submit it.

Still bugs me to this day.  Granted, it wasn't the MoH, and the vetting process for that award is about as strict as it gets, but I've seen some bullshit awards go out.  Seen some serious acts of bravery get cheap ass awards too.  The awards system is far from perfect.

Billy Mumy was interviewed once about his experiences as a child actor. He was on one episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents, and it was quite scary for him. Hitchcock had little patience with children and on one scene, young Mumy couldn't hold still on his mark. Mumy says that Hitchcock leaned down into his face and said "young man, if you don't sit still on your mark, I will be forced to nail your feet to the floor"

159 142 Anybody "win" the debate?

IIRC, Gingrich did superbly, but sometimes he comes off as that scolding college-professor type, which can seem a bit condescending.  Still, he's in pretty-good command of his facts and history.  This was Perry's most solid debate thus far, although it may be a bit late for him to recover at this point.  Romney did okay too, but I don't ever want to hear about him and gays ever again.  Santorum did alright, a solid B performance, but he lacks the charisma that can take him to the next level (and it hurt him in past debates when was admittedly a bit douchy).

Jon Huntsman can flee to China or become a Pilates instructor for all I care - he should not ever be the CinC.  Ron Paul needs to be taken to the old folk's home in Tehran if they had one.  There's being against war and then there's sympathizing with an avowed enemy.  Paul keeps sliding towards the latter.

171 I conducted about 20 interviews from military and civilian eyewitnesses and determined that he didn't do anything that warranted any special recognition at all, yet the somebody way up the chain decided he was going to get that medal anyway and I was directed me to draft it up and submit it.

Kind of but not entirely unrelated. When I was a cop, I fought a woman who was going after a guy with a knife a little bigger than a steak knife. During the struggle, I was able to take the knife away from her using my training without escalating the force used. Cancel the order for the elliptical.  Order a decent pair of running shoes and spend the rest of the money on learning some activity.  Tennis, for example.  It'll get you into shape, and give you a chance to meet people.

Spielberg pretty much added some high tech touches to Hitchcock and used Tom Hanks as his Jimmy Stewart

Many directors weren't nice people back then either. John Huston was brilliant, but you don't hear many happy stories about him.

191 One of the problems with acet- acetin- ace Tylenol is that its active ingredient is in freakin' everything. So you can get a lethal dose even more easily by taking cough syrup, cold medication, and pain reliever at the same time.

If it's in the ingredient list, I won't have it in the house. Ibuprofen works better and is much, much safer.

372 #360: My first gun was a Smith & Wesson .380 Sigma. Not a bad little gun, but the short grip put all the recoil right on my thumb, making it a real pain for me to fire.

When I got a bigger gun that fit my hand better, I gave the Sigma to my Mom, figuring it'd be a better match for her smaller hands.

It felt really good to give Mom a gun!

407 Fucking Hitchens was alright. Yeah he has pissed off just about everybody, but damn sometimes he was right. Sometimes we have in our lifetimes an intellectual Howard Stern who lets everyone know that we all have weaknesses including Hitchens himself. But at times, I would have gone to war with this guy to protect what he had to say. Remember, this guy got his ass kicked by Muslim barbarians because he challenged their views. Maybe I forget, but I don't remember him getting his ass kicked by Catholics or Baptists for spouting his beliefs which fly in the face of just about every Christian.

417 How did we miss this story--Hispanic liberal Dem Congressman blasts Ogabe as arrogant, smug, lecturing, outoftouch?!: Dem lawmaker blasts ‘Professor Obama’ as arrogant, alienating By Rep. Dennis Cardoza (D-Calif.) - 12/13/11 06:05 AM ET After observing President Obama for the last three years, it has become obvious to me that the president might prefer to be a university professor rather than do the job he holds today. While he might not realize that he feels this way, the evidence is very clear to those who work with or watch him closely. Let me be clear — I’m not trying to disparage professors. But anyone who wonders why the president is not crushing the weak Republican field only needs to examine how President Obama has behaved more like Professor Obama: ‘IDEA DISEASE’ In the president’s first year in office, his administration suffered from what I call “idea disease.” Every week, and sometimes almost every day, the administration rolled out a new program for the country. There was no obvious prioritization and, after the rollout, very little effort to actually pass the latest idea/imperative/plan/edict. Instead, the new programs just kept coming, with the new proposals constantly stepping on the previous day’s message. This rampant “idea disease” squandered the tremendous goodwill generated by the Obama campaign’s message of “hope,” tainting the president’s personal appeal. As Democrats in Congress, we often felt like we were drinking water out of a fire hose, trying to simultaneously deal with past failures of the Bush administration and the avalanche of new initiatives from Obama. This lack of focus also made it easy for congressional Republicans to stall and foil many of President Obama’s best initiatives — which they did with relish! ‘I’M RIGHT, YOU’RE WRONG’ Early in his administration, President/Professor Obama repeatedly referred to “teaching moments.” He would admonish staff, members of Congress and the public, in speeches and in private, about what they could learn from him. Rather than the ideological or corrupt “I’m above the law” attitudes of some past administrations, President Obama projected an arrogant “I’m right, you’re wrong” demeanor that alienated many potential allies. Furthermore, the president concentrated power within the White House, leaving Cabinet members with no other option but to dutifully carry out policies with which they had limited input in crafting and might very well disagree. From my experience, this was especially true in the environmental, resources, housing and employment areas. Not by coincidence, these areas have also been responsible for much of the president’s harshest critiques. LECTURES vs. LISTENING One former administration official told me directly that the people in the White House “NEVER TALK TO REAL PEOPLE.” Another former Obama staffer confided to me that it was clear to him that the president didn’t mind giving speeches (lectures), but really avoided personal contact with members of Congress and folks outside the Beltway. “He doesn’t seem to derive energy from spending time with regular people the way Clinton did. He rallies to give speeches for the big crowds, but avoids individual contact,” the former staffer recalled. This “arms-length” attitude extends to top decision-makers in the president’s administration. A senior housing official recently told me that, despite the fact that he was responsible for crafting policies to stem the foreclosure crisis, he had personally never met with a homeowner who had been foreclosed on. The president’s disinterest in input from those outside his inner circle is costing him many wasted opportunities. Recently, a senator told me Obama went to his/her state, but issued an invitation for the senator to attend the event only the day before. “I represent a must-win state and lead the president in approval ratings by nearly 20 points. He was totally off-message for what my people wanted to hear. Doesn’t the White House get it? I don’t need him, he needs ME!” Many on the Democratic side wish Hillary Clinton, Gov. Jerry Brown (Calif.), Gov. Martin O’Malley (Md.) or Gov. Andrew Cuomo (N.Y.) were running instead, but the president still has time to learn a thing or two from these skilled politicians. I’ll still take Professor Obama over the “goat rodeo clowns” the Republican field offers, but I fear the overall student body — American voters — will give him a failing grade next November if he doesn’t improve his performance Source: http://thehill.com

422 OhioDan,
This was VodkaPundit's take:

This was a Fox News debate. I know what people — lefty people — were expecting. You know, the Hulk debate: SMASH OBAMA!

Instead, the moderators, very deliberately, set the contestants — er, candidates — up against one another, issue after issue. So much so, that every time someone brought up the Current Occupant, it felt tacked on. Fake. Pandering.

This was a red-meat debate for the heart-and-soul of the Iowa voter.

On that basis, I suppose it was something like a success. There were no awful moments. Everyone played to their strengths.

But how it all advanced a conservative agendaÂ… I have no idea.

Maybe Mitt won. Maybe Newt salvaged his lede. Maybe Perry continued his mini-surge. Certainly Santorum and Bachmann lived to fight another day.

But the big winner was President Obama, who hardly had a glove laid on him tonight. And at a Fox News debate.

449 Romney needs a good sex scandal.

Theres a port on a western bay And it serves a hundred ships a day Lonely sailors pass the time a way And talk about their homes
Theres a girl in this harbor town And she works laying whiskey down They say Romney, fetch another round She serves them whisky and wine The sailors say...

Chorus: Romney, you're a fine girl < you're a fine girl > What a good wife you would be <such a fine girl> Your eyes could steal a sailor from the sea

Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the north of spain A locket that bears the name of the man that Romney loves He came on a summers day - bearing gifts - from far away But he made it clear he couldnt stay The harbor was his home
- Chorus -

Bridge: Romney used to watch his eyes As he told his sailor stories She could feel the ocean fall and rise She saw its raging glory But he had always told the truth Lord he was an honest man And Romney does her best to understand
At night when the bars close down Romney walks through a slient town And loves a man who's not around She still can hear him say She hears him say...
Brandy wears a braided chain Made of finest silver from the north of spain A locket that bears the name of the man that Romney loves He came on a summers day - bearing gifts - from far away But he made it clear he couldnt stay The harbor was his home
- Chorus -

Forget curing cancer.  Curing snoring is my highest priority.  (Lovable but loud husband has driven me from the bed.)

Any hockey fans here right now?  I'm looking to buy a couple of tickets for the Snorer and myself at our minor league team in Salt Lake.  It's been many years since I attended a game (and I'm not an expert - have been to a couple, the Caps and Blackhawks).  Where do you like to sit?

Thanks!  I'm reading a lot of recommendations of either the club level or rows 10-15 on the main level between the blue lines.

Interestingly, a few folks recommend the corners which they claim is where scouts sit.

Also, how can I tell which goal the home team will be defending?  Is it always near where the home team's box is?

That reminds me of a character I once knew on a bulletin board many years ago.  Progressive socialist "enlightened" type from Denmark.  Always bragging about how so much of Danish GDP was used in foreign aid.  Interesting guy, but bought into a lot of that eugenics crap.  Believed blacks had long arms to help them swing from vines.  Crazy shit.  I don't recall him being racist as such, I mean I don't think he *hated* blacks.  He just had some wacky ideas.

Wound up marrying a Canadian girl.

and just to expand on the new Americas Cup, it's format has been changed to use 70 foot Catamarans only for the finals instead of 70 foot monohulls which are overly expensive due to being the newest technology and you needed 6 or more. The new format also uses 40 foot cats for  training and elimination which again lowers the cost, and a lot of National teams have now joined that couldn't afford it before.

537 Lord, that Hitchens thread left a nasty taste in my mouth. Had to come here just to make myself feel better.

Anyone still up?

538 I'm around MissT, I'm looking at all the fail in the Ron Paul threads. I'm not gonna comment on the Hitchens thread, as I don't speak ill of the dead

I'm here!

Was the Hitchen's thread bad?  I only skimmed some of it but I didn't notice any flaming.  Seemed civil for the most part.

Some commenters said they are glad Hitchens is dead (but in more profane language), insulted him, and/or expressed satisfaction that he's now in Hell.

544 NyQuil and similar products have the deadly combination of acetaminophen and alcohol. I haven't used them for more than 20 years because of that.

546 How do they determine what companies are anti-christmas? I mean Barnes and Noble is on the anti list but there website has the word Christmas on it rather large and upfront to... Sure its only related to shipping as far as I bothered to look but there no reason they couldn't of put just Dec 25th like the Gap company stores do
