Overnight Open Thread - Pre-Christmas Eve Edition
— Gabriel Malor

Actually, this isn't about Christmas at all. I'm all tapped out after the Festivus thread this morning. How about we go back to that tried-and-true moron favorite (which, yes, I know we already did today) the movies.

Let's start with this, because I find short people amusing.

How tall are these peoples?
Look, I've been in the same room as Renner. Okay, it was a grocery store and he was buying natty light and a bottle of cheap white. All I'm saying is: he's not the shortest man I've ever seen, but he's not all that tall either. But he's absolutely, certainly taller than Cruise. Cruise actually has a little butt boy following him around with a box to stand on. It happens.

Two things you can never, ever trust on IMDB: (1) the ages of the women, and (2) the heights of the men. I lived in Hollywood. Aside from Costa Rica, it is probably the place with the shortest average height for men that I've ever lived.

Speaking of Hollywood, yes, we are in a Baby Goose bubble. Every time I turn around this guy is in another movie. True story, though, for a darn hilarious movie (I was actually crying it was so funny) check out Crazy, Stupid, Love. I'm not a big fan of Steve Carell, but he really pulls this off. It also has Emma Stone, who is cheeky and delightful and frickin' hilarious in Easy A. This actress is going places.

Okay, where was I? Oh, right. Movies.

The makeup folks were PISSED.

Five minutes of behind-the-scenes The Hobbit: The Part One Subtitle I Can't Remember is available. And by "five minutes" I mean twelve.

Oh, what else is going on... Oh, here have another YouTube video that I've been watching too much of. It's music, so be warned. Here's another. And perhaps the most soulful version of House of the Rising Sun I've ever heard.

You gamers out there, I'm still totally absorbed by Skyrim (and too cheap to pay for a MMORPG), but I'm hearing good things about Star Wars: The Old Republic. A former AOSHQ guestblogger sends this review:

-The fully voiced dialogue, in key scenes in particular, is superb
-The writing is well done, KOTOR level - very great on class-specific stuff
-Finally, I get to roam the galaxy with Rachel Leigh Cook by my side. It's a dream for 15 year old me.

SWIDT?

And, finally, in almost-DOOM, but definitely moron-relevant news, the FDA sent this poor man, a bonafide "sperm donor" (scare quotes, trust me), a cease-and-desist letter since he doesn't have a federal permit. Look, if the federal government wants a permit before I make a "donation," it's really gonna put a crimp in my style. And I suspect yours too.

Oh, what the hell, one more music video, but only good for you morons who can speak Spanish. This one's got eye candy for the boys and girls.

Alright, g'night, ONTers. If you just close your eyes, Santa will get here faster!

7 Watching the hubby play Skyrim right now, as a matter of fact. I played a bit while my daughter was napping this afternoon. I don't get as much time to play so I'm only at level 25. But I did manage to complete the Mage's College quest line, so I am officially the Archmage of the College at Winterhold. And yes, I am a complete dork.

Watched my son play this week and I am of the age where I was in the mode of "what the fuck is this?". I asked him, didn't they already do this with a game a few years ago that I bought him? I'm still stuck in the Atari, Pac-Man, Asteroids, genre.

16 For those who didn't see it earlier. Holder and Obama have figured out why they didn't know anything about Fast and Furious. Everyone at the ATF and DOJ who did know something about it was Caucasian. Eric and Barry were discriminated against; that is why they weren't in the loop on the project.

Same universe, but many, many years later. It's one of four or five games in the Elder Scrolls series. All set in the same universe, but on different "continents" and in different time periods. It's very cool.

But the Elder Scrolls games are really neat. Open world, lots of quests with pretty good story lines, too. And the last one had a voice over by Patrick Stewart. how can it not be awesome?

Should I put selling your house on my prayer list?

Yes, please. I have picked out a rental duplex. SWMBO and the kids will stay here until house sells or school year ends.

I pray for a quick sale so we won't be apart long and we can get to moving on a new purchase. Our favorite so far is a short sale so we can't do a contract with a contingency for selling our house. It will probably go to foreclosure before we get our place sold.

Sitting here in all this space, enjoying my fireplace is sort of depressing since I know I'm leaving it soon.

Life is good here, although it got somewhat uncomfortable last evening. Went to a get-together and the only leftwit in our family was there. After listening to him run his yap debasing my military  I finally told him in a clear voice he owed them a huge vote of thanks, for preserving his privilege to be as much of an asshole as no one could stand. And everyone heard me.

  He left shortly after.

Scott J you're doing a short sale?

No the house in the new location we really like is a short sale. But that limits how flexible the price is and also means we can't place a contract with contingincies (typically you make an offer contingient on selling your current home).

Sometimes I feel like a bit of a selfish SOB. I am gainfully employed. Just miserable. No hope of making the current gig better so I'm moving on.

117 Posted by: Flapjackmaka at December 23, 2011 09:57 PM (FKQng) I'm a dark elf. Good with magic and resistant to it as well. The problem with the elf characters is they're usually really vulnerable to magic, which is a bitch when you're fighting dragons that breathe fire and frost at you. But the dark elves are the exception. I walk through the dragon battles. My one gripes that for magic characters there's no distance destruction spells out of the gate that you can cast. So, if you're a fighting character, you can always pick up a bow and arrow and pick enemies off, sneak up on them, etc. It's a lot harder to do that with the magic characters until you get leveled up enough that you can use the lightning bolt or firebolt spells.

We don't know exactly, but apparently about 20% of Perry's signatures were counted as invalid but less than 10% of Newt's were. (Roughly).  It's possible, but in order for it to happen, a subcontractor or activist would have really had to screw the pooch in signing up people.

What may happen is that Perry contests this and -- lo and behold -- they declared some invalid signatures that were not actually invalid. Even if that comes to pass, by then the damage has been done and one more nail in the Perry coffin has been driven.  It reminds me of the press release in which Kim Jong-Il was mentioned 7 times but in one mention there was a typo calling him Kim Jong II.

The meme is set.

In fact, Perry has been spending so much time and money in Iowa but been so low for so long, it doesn't surprise me that he doesn't have a good organization in VA.

UPDATE: Apparently it's not confirmed that Newt has qualified.

175 The other advantage to waiting for the GOTY edition for a bethesda game is so they (or the modders) can fix most of the 700+ bugs. No I'm not exaggerating. With the new TESV Acceleration Layer mod has finally stopped the game from crashing every 10-20 minutes, though the internal timers result in bizarre quest behavior and the interface is still a Godawful Tragedy, but Yugo is the new Mercedes. Once the bugs get fixed, or most of them, it will be worth a lot more than 100 hours. I think of games in dollars/hour terms.

199 chemjeff, if you have a massive bruise on your forearm from a blood draw it means they back penetrated your vein, causing a leak (hematoma). Still, the vein is a low pressure vessel and shouldn't leak too much. You may need to check out your clotting factor.

I had a back pierced arterial wrist tap one time and it leaked and bruised my entire arm. It hurt worse than the procedure they did on me. But that is an artery.

268 The one time I met a celebrity actor was, believe it or not, in the elevator at the American Medical Association. This was in the late 1970s, when I was working as a copy editor for their medical journals. (If you know Chicago, this was the old AMA building, on the NW corner of Grand and State.) One day, I got on the elevator, and lo and behold, who should be in it already but Hugh O'Brien. He was a cowboy actor, who starred in the series "Wyatt Earp", a very handsome man with craggy features. On the TV screen, O'Brien looks about seven feet tall; but I stand 6' 6", and in the flesh, the top of his head barely came up to my armpit.

Well, I looked down at him, and he looked up at me, and the expression on his face just shouted, "Go ahead! Say it! Say it!" But I was polite and kept my mouth shut.

I later read that on "Wyatt Earp", they hired short actors and used scaled-down sets, all to make their star look taller than he really was. What a strange way to make a living.

290 Oh, for unarmed, there is a skill boost for it along the way, I forget where I got the gloves but I unenchanted them to learn it.

One thing I like about skyrim is there's places that have a whole story behind them, like there's a place where you can find a burning house with a circle of candles, a burned body, and a spell book to summon a fire demon. Ha! Completely out of the way, unrelated to everything.

The glitches are annoying -- not quite as bad as Fallout 3/Fallout: NV (NV is especially bad if you go hundreds of hours in a game), but it's possible to play through them.

292 This atheist is going to exchange presents, cook and eat a Christmas feast, and drink some old red wine on December 25. Because it's motherfucking Christmas, that's why.

Even though I'm an unbeliever, this is one thing I absolutely Don't Get about the more vocal atheist assholes. Even if God is just a tale, morality is a sham, and religion is a con game, Christmas is still a day of joy. What kind of shrunken-souled, bitter, hateful fanatic deliberately complains because other people are observing Christmas?

When I was a teenager I and some friends got into a long argument with some born-again nutjobs who were protesting at Mardi Gras. I don't see a scintilla of difference between those idiots with their bullhorn and life-sized cross and the atheists with their lawsuits and crucified Santa. Both are enraged by the sight of other people having fun.

Actually, there is one difference: the fundies with the bullhorn were genuinely trying to save souls (unnecessarily, since Shrove Tuesday is a Catholic feast day and most of the half-dressed drunks they were haranguing would have ashes on their foreheads the next day). The atheists are just trying to make sure everyone knows how intelligent and enlightened they are, by insulting and attacking other people's beliefs.

And being wrong is one thing they absolutely cannot admit or tolerate.

Posted by: Tammy al' Thor at December 23, 2011 11:49 PM (SsG4J)

I never played a elder scrolls game but I here the plots are not really connected at all so you can start on any sequel. People compare it to Pokemon. I play a lot of RPG so I may not be ok at first. But the game will I think tell you the races and advantages and stuff.

People who played the game, confirm?

Posted by: Flapjackmaka at December 23, 2011 08:07 PM (FKQng)

382 Tammy, the Bethesda RPG's are usually pretty good about prompting for stuff, and the controls are pretty easy to pick up. First game I played on a Console was Oblivion, which was number 4 in the series, Skyrim is 5. But it doesn't directly tie in at all, so you don't need to have done 1-4 for Skyrim. Heck, I've still never done 1 or 2.
#3 (Morrowind) was AWESOME and is still sold for XBox and PC in the 90% off bargain bin. The graphics suck by today standards, but a good game anyhow.

392 Tammy, I know that on PS3 more than one person can play (not at the same time), just make a different profile for each person, and their saves are separated in each profile. You can have multiple saves in each profile, too; I've started two games, and I switch back and forth sometimes. There's different choices that you can make that change the course of the game, so it's worthwhile kind of. The best place to save is right when they let you off of the cart at the beginning, just hit save there. Then you can load that, and it will take you through the choosing your race again.
If you guys end up liking Skyrim, look into Oblivion and Fallout; they're similar.
Night all and merry xmas, I'm off to kill a Dragon with fus ro DAH!!

397 Caging the vermin might well prove useful in the short term, even if research proves futile.  We agree that OWSers should be confined for their own, and others', protection.  Regarding the rats - we might as well let them be, as we have plenty in captivity already, and they are more easily handled, understood, and less likely to shit where they eat than the vile "99%".

438 Nice to see you Polliwog, been a long time.
So I've been playing with my new toy. For some reason it didn't want to cycle (not firing it, just working the slide) so I pulled the slide and oiled the rails. While I had the slide off I noticed the recoil spring was fully extended, which it should not have been if the slide had been removed properly...which I knew I had done.
So, I took my little screwdriver and compressed the spring then pushed the detent, and when I put it back together it cycled fine. I remember Brother saying something about having problems with it so I think he took the slide off without depressing the recoil spring detent button.
I then loaded the mag and tried to cycle 10 rounds through it by working the slide, it hung up when it tried to feed the shells. So I monkeyed around with the retainer springs in the magazine and now it will cycle the ten rounds right through without any problems.
Next I will take it to the range and see if it will actually fire all ten rounds out of the magazine. I don't think it has been fired in 30 years or more, Dad certainly hasn't done anything with it lately and Brother has never fired it either. Everything looks like it should work, so I'm sure it will be OK.

I started this post pissing and moaning about shopping for my wife's Christmas presents.  After I read it I realized what a self indulgent spoiled prick I sounded like so I deleted it.  I just want to make my wife happy.  There are too many people that would give their eye teeth have to decide how to spend their money on Christmas gifts.

So that I don't sound like a complete jerk, I have a few friends that don't have family to give or receive gifts.  I will be dropping off some tomorrow to a couple of them.  The day before yesterday I went to the store and bought a couple spiral sliced hams and all the fixings.  I gave it to some other friends and said now take it to a friends and say dinner's on them.

Merry Chrismas all and to my Jewish friends, Happy Hannukah.

Good luck, I hope it goes perfectly.  I cannot wait until Christmas day, when I give my father his father's shotgun back...after around 10 hours of 0000-steel wool, lots of solvent and oil, and elbow grease, it's back to "good" condition.  No more rust, no more scunge (mice were nesting in the case and ACTION!), and the action is as slick as it was the day it was bought.

I shot a round of sporting clays with it, and to say that there will be pangs of sadness when I turn it over is an understatement - shooting doubles, that thing was fast enough that I kept up with my semi-auto buddies.  I broke as many as they did, but with 12ga, not 20ga, and with a full, not open, choke.  Pop will probably have to wrench it out of my hands on Monday.  It will be a sad day for me, but when he sees that gun alive again, it will all be worth it.

My primary is a Gibson SG.  You have no failing.  I just happen to love the Tommy more than most electric players alive today.  Had Danny Gatton not ended himself years ago, the OP might have gone a different way.

Nope, Steve Wariner.  He's one of the few "CGPs" (Certified Guitar Players) ordained by Chet Atkins.  The others are: John Knowles (don't know anything about him, assume he's awesome), Tommy, Jerry, and that's it.  Before he departed this earth, Chet bestowed the honor on those guys, and none other.

485 >>Waiting on X-mas with baited breath.<< Not just to you C Crank, but this is one of those "intarwebz" mistakes that happens thousands of times a day, that make me giggle. "Bated breath", refers to a state in which you almost stop breathing as a result of some strong emotion, such as terror or awe. I'm not quite sure what "baited breath" refers to but whenever I read it, I imagine someone who snacks on chum (Eeew!). Probably the same sort that refuses to "tow" the line.

Tammy, you are so right that it's not even funny.  I just found Knowles' version of "Vincent", which is one of my favorite Chet Songs, and it's as good as Chester's, if not better.  The Atkins version is truer to the original, but the Knowles version is going to keep me up all night seeing what else he's done.

In summary, I will be up all night, and it's your fault.  Feel shame.

566 >>Mrs. Crank wanted an iPad 2, and I told her it wasn't in the budget. So, naturally I got her one, plus a little blue box as well<< Best X-Mass gift EVAR!!! Was when I was almost 13 yrs. old and the whole family went to the Mall to "shop" for gifts. Mom and me went one way and Dad and little brother went the other. Our family didn't have a lot of money at the time and I KNEW IT. So, I tried on an outfit in a grown-up store, "just for fun" at my mom's urging (I think she was trying to get me more interested in Girl Stuff) and I instantly covetted it. We did the whole thing. The pants that go with the shirt, that go with the sweater, that go with the jewelry, that go with the jacket... Late '80's, the bill would have been $84.67 for the outfit. (I remember that.) Unbelievable!!! Outrageouss!!! No. Way. Possible. I also remember feeling almost sick, angry, jealous, when Mom and I were waiting for Dad and Bro to meet us at the food court. "What's wrong, Deety? You're upset. Why?" "I'm sorry Mom but I really, really liked that outfit and I liked wearing it and I liked putting it together and I KNOW that it is too expensive for us to afford but I still WANT it." "Wasn't it just fun, playing dress-up?" "No. It's kind of WORSE, in a way!" "Why?" "I DON'T KNOW and I DON'T CARE!!! It doesn't matter." *sulks* "It sounds like it does to you, Deety." "No, it doesn't. Look! There's Pappa & Friedrich, by Sbarros!" ***Anyway...*** I got the whole outfit, (including bangles) that Christmas. I still cry when I remember opening up theose packages, one by one... They didn't HAVE to, they couldn't AFFORD to but they DID IT! (It *was* kind of boss, to be more fashionable than Lisa Bonet, that winter, in my Jr. Hi-Skull!)

567 New house??

Yeah.

The trees that went into the short sale paperwork deserve some hippy screaming.

First you sign a paper saying you're buying a house & have to pay for it.

Then, you sign a paper saying that you understand that you just signed a paper saying that you're buying a house & have to pay for.

Then, you sign a paper saying that you understand it's a bad thing to lie about signing a paper saying you're going to buy a house & pay for it if you really don't mean it.

Then, you sing a paper saying you understand that it's not only a bad thing but a crime to sign a paper saying you're going to buy a house & pay for it when you really don't mean it.

Then, you sign a paper saying that you understand that crimes have legal consequences like fines and federal prison time should you have signed a paper saying that you're going to buy a house & pay for it but really didn't mean it, which you understand is not only a bad thing but a crime.

Then after you sign, the notary signs.  "They" now have notaries who spend their entire day witnessing home sales.

Speaking of which, Bers is taking his sweet time with that dragon slaying photo essay.

In an earlier era, perhaps. But keep in mind Oui was Playboy's answer to the Penthouse challenge. There wasn't much they wouldn't show, although it was fairly tame by today's anatomy lesson standards. It was just what the hairier among us can produce if left untrimmed could be quite a rug. (This was rarer among blondes. I recall there was a 70s porn star, Jean Jennings IIRC, who was renown for a blonde thatch of great volume. I never saw any of her stuff beyond a single photo in a magazine that was probably Playboy. )

She (Moore) had to have done something about it before Blame It On Rio was shot or it would have been obvious. "Demi, we need to talk about your, uh, package. The fact that you appear to have one, for starters."

It could be worse. For some the hair density extends well beyond the pubic region and present a major chore if she wants to wear a bikini. I have one female relative who always wore shorts to the beach. She eventually got electrolysis many years later when she got heavily into line dancing and wanted to dress more in line with her friends.

Posted by: Tammy al' Thor at December 24, 2011 04:22 AM (SsG4J) Hello Miss Tammy! Yes it is. I am up a little earlier than usual to get a head start on a few things. I have a little shopping to finish, a little decorating that needs to be taken care of, some cards to sign and then it is time to bake. We are baking banana bread, pound cake, and then cookies. The bread and cake are little exercises to make sure the equipment and staff are functioning within acceptable margins and properly calibrated - especially the oven - as well as fill the house with "home sweet home" smells. After that it is sugar cookie time. Oddly our grocery store, for the first time I have ever noticed, was out of our brand of flour tfor the last several days. Usually we use Pillsbury or gold Medal All purpose flour for these things but there is none to be had. They do have bread flour, self-rising flour, several wheat flours. They did have all purpose flour from King Arthur so we are going with that - one more reason to run a few loaves through as part of the shakedown.

There was a movie I saw recently. A Hong Kong import about two female business executives who are secretly lovers. Not a porn movie, more in the exploitation category. There is one scene where they are swimming nekkid with some underwater photography. It was amusing to note that the pubic hair on one of them flapped around in the water as she moved in perfect miniature to the hair on her head. I suppose the ethnicity helped as the same effect wouldn't be as evident with more wiry hair. Kind of cute and eyecatching on the first viewing.

I can vividly remember the first time I saw one of those. Patti Maguire, PMOY 1976, married tennis player Jimmy Connors and remarkably enough they're still together. And now she's 60.

I wonder how she looks now. Sometimes it's better not to know. A Playboy centerfold I got to know somewhat in my teens, because I was working at a lot of the custom car shows where she and other Playmates did appearances, turned up on the first of those horrible Real Housewives shows. Big as a friggin' house. It's one thing to not age well but to triple, possibly quadruple, your body mass? Tragic.

I still have her issue with the centerfold she signed for me.

As far as your PMOY, women who are naturally curvy in all the right places will oftentimes struggle with their weight later on.

Getting big as a house is preventable, but it is harder than heck for some females to keep slim once we get beyond a certain age. A definite effort and they still get dumped for younger models.

Which is why pair bonding at a girl's young age works.  The man's brain still "sees" and responds to the frozen-in-time mental image of his young hot wife.  Even though she's much more plush (and still rowr! to him) in later years.

Once that bond is broken, the mental image goes too.

701 Thank you thank you. Well it is a lot of fund and it is one of the rare opportunities to lead a lazy bunch of whiny malcontents in a challenging situation and emerge victorious that you encounter in our bastion of liberal political correctness and nannying. I have never used cake flour. Does it have the same tendency to bind loosely like bread flour? I have been working on my opening comments and Listen you lousy bastards, I know some of you are a nervous, worried, scared. Others are more than a little miffed at being pressed into service and would rather be playing angry birds or texting or whatever you hipsters do. However, today you are baking – you are taking tangible objects, manipulating them manually, and producing something useful. You are baking bread, you are baking cakes, and you are even baking cookies – lots and lots of cookies. Not everyone is going to come out of this the same as when they went in. You are going to learn things about baking, about yourself, and about those around you. You are going to get flour on your fancy clothes, you are going to get sugar and butter on your freshly manicured nails – you too girls. Someone is going to get a face full of hot oven air and someone is going to get covered in flour dumped into a mixer on high speed - it may not be pretty but you are all going to make it through this. This is not going to be the hardest thing you have ever done but it is going to get done and if you screw it up - so help me it - may well be the last thing you ever do.

I agree completely. I think it's too bad we have evolved as a society to the point where it's not financially feasible for kids to get married fairly young. Men get too used to having multiple partners for one thing. You can't blame them for having a hard time with monogamy when they've been having free reign til their 30 years old...it's hard enough anyway for 'em.

Men are chivalrous by nature and there is nothing more idealistic than a 15 or 16 year old boy. I think that goes wasted for the most part these days.

705 BTW, the other Playmate I mentioned is familiar to a lot of you. Jeana Tomasino. She was in two of the ZZ Top videos when they made their big 80s comeback. She hadn't had her kids yet and I suspect that had much to do with it. It seems to radically rewire some women's metabolism while others are scarcely affected.

A GIS suggests she lost some of the excess but the publicity photos that appeared when that show was on made her look immense. The muu-muu didn't help.

I am glad you found that amusing. I actually intend to say that or as close to as I can get without rehearsing or a teleprompter. My younger sisters are coming with boyfriends and like it or not my job is to give them a good going over. It is in the chivalrous vein you have been discussing. These are my sisters and my default assumption is that I will not like their boyfriends, if it is otherwise then that is just a pleasant surprise for all involved. It is a fine line to tread between standoffish and gruff older brother and jackass.

715 lol'd  All The Drama Kills "It."

Eventually, perhaps. But not immediately.

On the other hand, there's no sparks generated by Maude and her sisters, either.

I can accept the fact that the sparks will eventually be gone. What enrages me, though, are the women who get dumped at that age for no other reason than a trophy wife. That's my biggest problem with the ease of divorce. There is no longer any real safety net for older women who are treated this way. Alimony is becoming less and less common, and is hardly financially feasible for average people anyway.

No worries. You and your friend are better than average on the man scale. It took alcohol to set it loose and you didn't drop it on a woman. You do not have to quit cussing, T. Only a leftist wants their surroundings to conform to them. I have to quit for parenting. Blah, fuckity blah. It's just such a nice word. Maybe we'll name the kid Phuck. And, no I am not pg.

719 I have always told my sisters that you can date anyone, however, you are not getting married unless I approve of them. The funny thing is they argue with me about it. They say "I can marry anyone", "you cannot do anything" and so on. However, they continue arguing for as long as I insist that there is no marriage without my approval. I assume that in some way this means that somewhere in their thoughts I actually have some say in the decision. All i have to doe is say "nope" every few minutes and they will continue ranting and raving that they can do whatever they want and I am some sort of troglodyte throwback and so on.

I never even heard the F word til I moved to Atlanta and went to public school. I think I may have heard shit a time or two. Damn and hell now and then. So when I started hearing all of it, it was almost like a joke. I love to let it fly. I feel like I'm getting away with something. David and I are awful at home, but he is not near as good as I am at being able to control it in public.

The selection criteria for your first love are probably not sound for long run happiness and it is certainly not the fault of a wife that things just turned out differently for the first love. And of course there is no one I would prefer to be married to than my wife, hopefully that is mutual. I was just thinking about Miss Tammy's observations on young boys and chivalry, which I agree with, and thinking that it would be nice if everything did work out so that all of the idealism of youth, chivalry, first love worked out in a storybook way. Not complaining, not even wishing, just observing.

Well, replacing the first wife with a trophy wife does happen with alpha men of means and vanity.  But I've heard that the majority of divorces are initiated by the wives in Eat Pray Love style.  Agree that divorce is too easy, esp with children in the mix.

Which is why I'll be eating my Who pudding and Who hash unaccompanied and awaiting my teen kids to come over Sunday to check out what Santa left for them.

Not surprised you noticed as usual, memory of an elephant, eyes of an eagle. That is not patronizing at all. I understand exactly what he means. The marrying stuff is mostly a trust issue. You may have someone that is fun to hang around but not marry. You only marry someone you trust sufficiently, across a range of issues from fealty to commonsense to build a life with. Not a lot people in that category. The fight for vs over thing is similar. My methlab will fight over a scrap of food on the sidewalk, however she will fight for me. Fighting over the floosie in the parking lot is because it is cold and you do not want to go home alone. Fighting for you is to protect you and or your interests. I am pretty sure there is a point when you are fighting over the floosie in the parking lot where you reach a good enough / more trouble than it is worth point. When you are fighting for someone it is until it is done or you are done. I think I would like this Thor fellow. Merry Christmas again.

So, I read in the Saturday newspaper that world leaders gathered in Prague for the funeral of Vaclav Havel.

Havel was a giant of the 20th century, a man who put his life on the line to free his nation from Communism. Barky, of course, would rather be off to Hawaii. Figures.

Posted by: Brown Line at December 24, 2011 03:17 AM (ojvSZ)

794 Why would barky honour a anti-communist?

796 Has SCOAMF skedaddled yet for Hawaii? Or are we going to be treated by the MFM to pictures of our lonely leader at the WH for Christmas Eve?

Posted by: Retread at December 24, 2011 03:25 AM (ALZZ7)

797 Yeah, I'm surprised Havel's death hasn't got much attention. In fact, it's scary because it seems the world has forgotten the horrors of communism.

Posted by: mike at December 24, 2011 03:25 AM (0hdwM)

798 The fact that we sent such a small delegation to Prague for Havel's funeral is just embarrassing.

And why wasn't George Bush sent as part of the delegation?  He was a personal friend of Havel.

I don't care who we end up with as the GOP nominee.  I will vote for that person because he will not embarrass us this much.

Disgraceful!

The Obama dog Bo has outlived his usefulness as a prop for adoring fans and media elites, and will soon suffer the fate of Clinton's dog Buddy and the svelte NBC reporter Chelsea's cat Socks.

Buddy was conveniently run over by a car, and Socks was awarded to President Goober's secretary Betty Currie for her many years of loyal service, to include taking the heat off the Clinton's by adopting their unwanted cat Socks.

As a conservative Virginian, I like to think that our politics are not overly corrupt (but when politicians are involved, well...).  However, it seems to me that with opposition operatives, democrat derailers, and vote fraud concerns, no serious non-big-establishment candidate should have felt comfortable with anywhere near the minimum number of signatures being submitted.
The professional political establishment hates them some upstart politicians that haven't been bought and paid for.
