'Pinkwashing': Oh Those Crafty Joos Zionists
Israel accepts and treats gays very well while Hamas, the PLO and pretty much every single country in a 500 mile radius brutalizes and/or just kills them outright. So if you're an anti-Israel gay activist, how do you square the circle on this uh, rather sharp disparity? Well if you're Sara Schulman of CUNY, you invent an entirely new concept - 'pinkwashing':
The growing global gay movement against the Israeli occupation has named these tactics “pinkwashing”: a deliberate strategy to conceal the continuing violations of Palestinians’ human rights behind an image of modernity signified by Israeli gay life..
Ah those clever zionist occupier types - they're only being nice to teh gays so they can keep the straight Palestinians down.

Of course sometimes the Israelis really are clever:

Silverstein claimed that "an authoritative Israeli source with considerable military experience" told him that the IDF used a "Trojan Horse" style trap. A few weeks ago it was reported that an Israeli drone disappeared over Lebanon. Silverstein now claims Israel "out foxed Hezbollah" as Hezbollah brought the downed drone to its arms cache. Once inside the arms cache it was detonated, causing a massive explosion.

7 Actors Who Have No Credibility Left
Well at a certain point you're so over the top that no amount of over-acting can save you. A classic example is Nicolas Cage (who's not actually #1 on the list):

First of all, his tendency to overact his ass off has left him a caricature of himself, a manic weirdo who chews so much scenery that even Al Pacino thinks he needs to calm down. Second, the dude has picked some astoundingly awful movies to star in. If you donÂ’t believe me, here is the list of movies that he has starred in over the last decade:

Captain CorelliÂ’s Mandolin, Christmas Carol: The Movie, Windtalkers, Sonny, Adaptation (the one truly good movie in the whole damn decade), Matchstick Men, National Treasure, Lord of War, The Weather Man, The Ant Bully, World Trade Center, The Wicker Man, Ghost Rider, a cameo in Grindhouse, Next, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Bangkok Dangerous, Knowing, G-Force, The Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call, Astro Boy, Kick-Ass, The SorcererÂ’s Apprentice, Season of the Witch, Drive Angry, Seeking Justice, and Trespass.

Passenger Forced to Stand for 7 Hours on U.S. Airways Flight
Why? Because the 400lb passenger next to him spilled over into his seat keeping from sitting, and the plane was completely full. Pretty much a nightmare flight and probably against a couple of FAA rules. US Airways offered him a paltry $200 voucher, but he really deserves a full refund.

'I didn't fly from Alaska to Philadelphia on Flight 901,’ Mr Berkowitz told consumer advocate Christopher Elliot’s blog. ‘I stood.’
'His size required both armrests to be raised up and allowed for his body to cover half of my seat,Â’ he told the website, elliott.org.

The flight from Anchorage to Philadelphia is one of the longest non-stop U.S. domestic flights and Mr Berkowitz thought he had a spare seat at first. But before the door closed the airline asked a late-boarding passenger who weighed 400lbs to sit down next to him in the last empty seat.

Find the Kitteh - Ultimate Edition
Okay there's at least one kitteh in every single one of these pictures. Well supposedly - there were a couple that I just couldn't find the feline in. Be prepared to spend an hour or two going through the pictures at the link. This is one of the easier ones..

A Billion Years in the Blink of an Eye
The human mayflies dance over the planet, deluding themselves with their dreams of control, while the Earth abides.

Gluttony? Check.
Meet the cherpumple - a 21lb cake made up of cherry, pumpkin, and apple pies. Add some nuts and I think you'll have Michelle weeping tears of sweet, sweet despair.

Feel so bad about that dude on the plane.  Unfreaking believeable.  I have sat next to big peeps on the plane before (the ones who flag down the flight attendant as soon as they lumber on because they need a seat belt extender).  The one kid, his own parents didn't sit with him (they sat a row behind him)--because they knew how uncomfortable it would be sitting next to his giant butt!

The next thing they do is flip up the armrest between us.  I have sat in 1/4 of my chair because they are pouring into my seat.  So I have my legs crossed (something you should never do on a flight because of the risk of developing a DVT) and am leaning on my hubby with my armrest raised.  Horrible!

44 22 Discontinued, misguided sex toys and Steven Segal--who knew!

It was always amusing to watch Steven Seagal try to act like he is a suave love-machine, especially in Hard to Kill and Above the Law.

As for what movie of his was the worst, um...despite all the crappy direct-to-DVD films he's made over the past decade, I'm still going to say that Seagal's worst movie was On Deadly Ground, regardless of that film's superior production values when compared to said direct-to-DVD garbage.

52 Cat story - I was walking our nearly 100 lb lab around Balboa Island last night and we came across a feisty black cat with raised back and hissing. Our lab of course backs off and then I try and push him and he resists. Then the cat turns and our tough guy lab starts walking toward him and barking.

My insane wife managed to drag me out on Thanksgiving eve. I see insanity in my future

Ugh! I had to go to Costco today.  I got there a little later than I wanted to (due to another errand that ran over).  I got there 20 minutes after it opened, and I had to park in the overflow lot across the street.  I didn't get a cart (just ran in and grabbed the few things I really needed); I decided I will go back after Thanksgiving to get my Christmas greenery (they have the best deal on fresh garlands and wreaths).

Then I went to Target--no one there!  (Despite all their 4 day only sales promotions).  I guess people will be hitting there around midnight--so in a few hours.  Then I had to run to the mall, and that was crowded.

You would not know there is a recession on the Eastside (across the Lake from Seattle).

89 Ugh! I had to go to Costco today.  I got there a little later than I wanted to (due to another errand that ran over).  I got there 20 minutes after it opened, and I had to park in the overflow lot across the street.

We stayed hunkered down today, but yesterday I had to run errands and our local fire & emergency folks decided to have a boot drive, screwing up traffic on the major arteries.

If my husband had been in the car with me, I would have had to wrest the steering wheel from him so we didn't run them over (he hates those things), but since I was alone and the fireman was cute, I gave him money.

Is that wrong of me?

From Kratos's link's link:

Police were called to the Occupy Seattle encampment at Seattle Central Community College after a possible sexual assault Friday night.

A woman was coming back to her tent and found a strange man running out of it. Inside, another woman was passed out on the ground, naked from the waist down. Police took the victim to Harborview and are looking for the suspect.

“It seems like he was caught in the act, not having sex with her but she was just about to get assaulted,” said Occupy Seattle’s Robbie Watts.

I hate to sound like a traitor to my sex and a cold hearted bitch, but if you are a woman and you are stupid enough to make the conscious choice to live on the streets in a tent with a bunch of unwashed thugs, criminals and drug addicts, you get what you deserve.  Sorry.

Where do accidents happen? Who do they happen to? What kind of vehicles tend to be involved? Are there high-fatality areas near you? The answers to these questions and more await in this one-of-a-kind map.

194 You know what irritates me?  It's when you hit refresh on IE and sometimes it takes you back to the latest post and then sometimes it takes you to that scary picture at the top of that moll with the ax.  And then sometimes it just locks the hell up.  That irritates me.  And when my eyebrows curl over into my mouth.  That irritates me, too.

I actually wanted Captain CorelliÂ’s Mandolin to be a good movie.  There aren't enough WW2 films from the Axis perspective, specifically the Italians. I can't believe someone hasn't made a big budget film about Mussolini either.

There were a lot of interesting stories that could easily translate into exciting movies.

Shes been gone for so long its hard to say what she can do. But i have never know her to choke under pressure so i look forward to a delightful meal tomorrow.

shes trying to land a big fish and i think she will do her best to impress him if not us, with her effort.

I have historically tended towards woodsy stuff that doesn't show well on the tree; I especially like reindeer and sleigh ornaments, any foresty critters, cardinals, etc and pinecones...lotsa pinecones.

But the last few years have fallen heavy for the glittery/sparkly. Tree is showier now, that's for sure.

373 Undead, Buena Park isn't very rich at all. But that mall used to have slightly nicer stores.

It's not, but compared to what I'M used to the place was just unbelievable.  Roads that weren't endless miles of shattered and crumbling pavement, no trash all over the place.  (On the other hand, I can get all of this just by driving across the border into Arkansas.)

I live further south now, right up the road from a very swanky mall (South Coast Plaza) That is some obscene wealth for sure.

South Coast Plaza and the rest of Costa Mesa pretty much blew my mind.  A staggering standard of living.  If I can ever afford the place, and if OC/IE/SD finally secede from the rest of the state, I'll be back.

Come on there are a couple decent to good movies in that list.

389 Gotta call it a night.  I have to drive from LA to SD tomorrow morning, as early as I can manage it, with 2 caged and very unhappy kittehs.  Have I packed?  There's a pair of jeans and a bag of dirty laundry so far.  I am so boned.

Abogado #1 stayed home today (bless him).  #2 left at 12:30 and said, why don't you just shut down the office now.  #3 (the dem) said he was coming in at 1:00 with about an hour's work.  Finally showed up at 2:30 and I was there until 4:00.  For the third time in a week, I cried on the way home.  And, as you may suspect, I am not much of a crier.  I hate my life, I don't know what I did to deserve this.

Ah, fuckit, had to vent (sorry).

Wishing a happy and blessed Thanksgiving to all.  And when I give thanks, y'all will be very high on the list.

396 Computer question:

I had a new Asus monitor and an old monitor that was wearing out - I would turn it on and it would turn off immediately several times before staying on.

I bought a new Asus monitor. Now I don't have that issue. But...when I scroll up and down it flickers. Since I got the same model of monitor, I set the settings exactly the same. The one difference is the new monitor is connected via VGA and the older one via DVI.

So, does the issue probably like with the monitor, the VGA cable, or the video card?

420 Here's a funny story about another legendary Hollywood babe, Talullah Bankhead...

Chico Marx found himself attending a party where the new-to-Hollywood Bankhead was also a guest. And he really wanted to meet her, but in those days, a man had to be introduced to a lady before he could start talking to her. So, he asked a mutual friend to make the introduction. He refused, as Chico was a notorious babehound (Chico is actually pronounced Chick-O, because he was always chasing the chicks). He told Chico, basically, "Now, look here; she is a lady. Her father is the Speaker of the House! I can't introduce you, because I don't trust you to show her the proper respect."

Chico kept working on his friend, insisting he'd respect Miss Bankhead, and eventually convinced his friend that the proper decorum would be observed. Finally, Chico was introduced to Miss Bankhead by the punchbowl.

"Miss Bankhead," he said, "I'd really like to fuck you."
"And so you shall, you old-fashioned boy!" she replied.

The liberal cocoon is a *major* factor. Since the moguls and stars are hard core liberals the people you want to ingratiate yourself with are all liberals, doing liberal things and are very in your face about it.

Actors don't usually ever have the experience of a regular working person - they are generally either poor or rich warping your view of the economy.

And finally, modern actors aren't general propelled to stardom by talent, or even hardwork. It is usually a mix of familial connections (spend some time on IMDB...), luck, looks, and the casting couch. This again warps their notion of what a free market looks like. Hell, if Hollywood was the only industry I had any understanding of I'd likely be a socialist too...

436 "I will fight my sister and brothers if they insist on taking her in. She prefers it at my home. Too much drama with the others. Posted by: sickinmass" That comment was a bit snippy of me. I live with my 93 year old father. It isn't easy, but you do it because they were always there for you. When people get old, especially with alzeimer's it isn't cutesy like what you see on tv. It's tough, but when it wears on you, you think about everything they did for you, and that makes it easier.

460 I avoid coach because... I once had to sit sideways for five hours and forty minutes with the front of me smashed into the seat arm under the window. My left hip still hurts. Then there was the time I shared a three seater with a giant woman and a paralyzed man who kept whipping it out, unannounced, and peeing into a cup. A few instances of crushed by fat. You know what's more common? Men who lift the arm, spread their legs out and begin rubbing on you. Men of all flavors. Your arm rubbing my tit is a personal favorite. And, don't even think of grabbing that pen you dropped in my lap. I will get you all when you least expect it. My freakin' Ezio won't heal!?! Gah!

At Easter, Costco had a cooler filled to the brim with lamb roasts.  I was about to buy, until I saw emblazoned upon the packaging the stamp Halal and arabic writing.
I knew what halal was, and was incensed that I was purchasing, for the highest holy days of Christianity, a piece of meat that was claimed for Allah, who would like to wipe me and my religion off the face of the earth.

I dropped a complaint at our local Costco, and let them know I will never purchase said product.  You all do the same if you wish to not be subjected.  Haven't seen halal anything since Easter.
  But there's always next year.

549 Meh, My Dad came home with a 15lb. turkey on Sunday and it's been thawing in the fridge ever since. It was assumed that "since I like to cook so much" that I would be thrilled with the opportunity to cook up the bird. This is going to turn out horribly. A.) I have never in my life roasted a bird this big. B.) I'm not a huge fan of turkey meat over-all (which explains A.)) C.) I just got off work at 8:30PM tonight and have to be back at it 8AM sharp on Friday. D.) His kitchen is not equipped to handle this. (Hell, even with all of the kitchen stuff I have packed away in storage, I would worry.) So brining the bird is right, out. E.) WTF am I going to do with all the leftovers? This just seems like it's going to be a huge, time consuming PITA (even if it's not done *right*) with very little reward and oh,yeah, I'm supposed to fix his virus borked computer tomorrow, "since I have the day off"! At this point, I'm just kind of hoping my paycheck doesn't clear tonight so's I can't afford to buy the ingredients for side dishes and fixin's tomorrow and I can get a repreive from this chore until Sunday. What a thrill, to go shopping ON Thanksgiving day! I mean, I really DO love to cook and I've been known to go all out on special occaisions (when I can plan and prep and shop at least a week out) but this last minute stuff when I'm working 6 days a week kind of bums me out. Meh. 15 fucking pounds... You better learn to like Hatch green chiles dude, because I'm seeing a shit-tonne of Santa Fe style turkey stew in your near future.

550 Carly Simon is homely, not really ugly, just homely. Her mouth is too big, and yet that's what makes her kinda cute in a homely way.

Sheryl Crow is not ugly, by any means; Thor thinks she's very hot. I think she's attractive, but kind of hard looking. Which probably explains the attraction for Thor.... for some reason, what he thinks looks sexy comes across as kind of hard and mean to me.

Well this war hero has me rethinking OWS. If a warrior like this thinks it's a good idea maybe we should all rethink it.

The dude was wounded by an RPG in the Valley of Elah,

Afghanistan in 2001, he also went back to the Valley of Elah in 2006 and then was ordered back to Afghanistan in 2007 to Congo Valley.

Wait, you mean there is no Valley of Elah in Afghanistan? Well Congo Valley then, what's that, no Congo Valley either?

He's just confused, let's look at his DD 214, WTF, it says he served his entire enlistment at Ft. Lewis, WA. Damn it also says he got out of the Army in January of 2001, when did that war start again?

(YMMV but I LIKE the bits of preserved orange rind they have in there.) I'm more of a meat / side dish person anyway and this bird is just going to suck all of the fun out of cooking for me tomorrow, I fear. I can't brine but I'm thinking of at least squooshing some herbed butter underneath the skin before I wrestle the monster into the oven. Deety, this works to keep the breast meat moist. Part of it sounds weird but it does work.

Rub Olive oil into the skin then put whatever spices you like on it. I use rosemary but thats me. You could use the butter you were talking about instead of the olive oil.

Then take a paper shopping bag and cut it down the middle of one face of the bag, run water over it and get it good and wet and then cover the bird with it. Make sure it's a couple of inches from the heating coil on top, although that dosesn't ususaly turn on unless you turn the broiler on.

Sounds weird but it works.

600 At Casa de Cthulhu, roasting turkeys is about as easy as it gets.

1. Brine the bird the day before, using some combination of allspice, cloves, peppercorns, bay leaves, salt, brown sugar, and any other seasoning that's threatening to hit its expiration date. Boil the mixture first, then crash-cool it (yes, you can use ice cubes). Rinse the turkey, put it in the container, toss in the fluid, stuff in the fridge.
2. The morning you're cooking the bird, look for overgrown herbs in the garden. Snip them, rinse them, set them aside. Rosemary, bay, and sage work really well, but whatever you have too much of is fine. I'd probably avoid mint. Make sure they're culinary herbs and not hemlock, oleander, etc.
3. Melt butter. If there are any expiring herbs you missed in step 1, melt them into the butter. Set aside.
4. Divide herbs into "bird" and "bath". Bird herbs should fit loosely into cavity. Put "bath" herbs into roaster pan.
5. Yank the bird out of the brine, drain (including cavity!). Use barbecue brush to slather bird's breast, cavity, and back with butter from 3. Put on rack in roaster pan. Discard brine.
6. Stuff "bird" herbs loosely into cavity. Put about 1 cup water and 1/2 cup wine into roaster pan. Shove into oven. Set timer (depends on bird size).
7. Drink.
8. When any reasonable person would have given up on the project, and the timer goes "bing", yank bird out of oven and flip over. Use ORKA silicone gloves for actual flip -- turkey flipping tools are a complete waste of time.
9. Drink. Entertain guests.
10. When you remember, pull bird out and check temperature in thigh space. Don't just check breast, or you'll end up reenacting Neanderthal food fights with the remainder of the carcass. If it's good, proceed -- otherwise, go back to step 9.
11. Put bird on cutting board, ignore for 10-15 minutes, then stagger out of kitchen bleary-eyed aimlessly waving carving knife and fork and slurring words. If someone from crowd takes knife and fork, it's their problem from then on.

Any questions?

Deety, The Universitly of Illinois says my paper bag method is unsafe and reccomends buying a bag from the store. I have done it several times and it has always turned out great. You may want to run to the store and get a proper bag though.

Here are some different methods. I don't put water in the pan. I stuff the turkey with rosemary and lemon quarters. The bag keeps it moist.

Well, actually, Monica Bellucci was one of Dracula's brides... I guess I'd have to rate her at least the second best part of that movie (she'd be rated higher if not for her role being so limited)... and for what it's worth, she's aged better than Said Frost... But Tom Waits as Renfield was definitely the third best part!

You'll probably find oven-roasted, garlic and herb, cajun spiced, sun-dried tomato and basil, mesquite smoked, rosemary and garlic, honey-mustard, and fried. It doesn't matter what the specifics are, though -- there is a hint being applied with a sledgehammer here. TURKEY IS BLAND STUFF, BUT YOU CAN DO ALMOST ANYTHING WITH IT.

Don't worry. Even if it's "unique", just boldface your way through it: "mmmm.....came out just like I wanted it to." So long as it's cooked through to where it's safe, you're golden.

632 Sorry, meant "over-seasoned".....but, considering that roast turkey is ok, they both work. So long as it gets cooked through, all the rituals and gyrations don't add or detract from the bird.

You can even see this in action if you go to one of the cafeteria places where they roast birds in the window with heatlamps. They actually charge people for those -- and is it half the bother of a home-roasted Thanksgiving bird?

635 >> Deety... there is a BAG OF GUTS inside the turkey. And a neck, too. Ya gotta pull that shit out first.<< Yeah, I was actually anticipating that part. Mostly based on memories of a T-Day disaster when my mom cooked a frozen turkey for the first time when I was a little kid. She also made incredibly shitty pork-chops. First thing I learned how to cook well. I've got 4 (count 'em) 4! variations on pork chops I've been perfecting that will make you cry because they are soo damned good. My GRANDMA has requested my pork chops with wild rice pilaf. Ex-Boyfriends try to chat me up because they think those pork chops with the dijon sauce are so good that their wife and kids should get a chance to try them. College roomates who were strict lacto-ovo vegetarians at the time, write wistful e-mails about the juicy deliciousness of that one forbidden bite of the JD flambed pork chop that they indulged in over a decade ago! Yeah. I know how to cook, mostly, but I've never gotten into whole birds too much. It really is all just theory. Also, 15 min. to rest something that size? I'd have guessed something more along the lines of 25-35 min...

637 One friend of mine told me about the disaster that was his mom's Thanksgiving turkey... she didn't want to go to the trouble of basting it, so she covered it with the stuffing. The stuffing formed an impenetrable crust on top of the bird, and all the meat underneath was grey and slimy.

Posted by: Genetic Tunder at November 23, 2011 10:55 PM (vQfJ3)

638 Oh, and dry... yes, simultaneously slimy and dry, as the turkey's natural juices were absorbed into the inedible stuffing.

Late to the party, but since we're all sharing:  I have a turkey breast, bones-in, brining right now; the brine is kosher salt, brown sugar, 1 bay leaf, and (here's the spicy little trick: crab boil, 1 tbsp per gallon of water).  Since it's 7 pounds, it will be a hot (300F) smoke over apple, which should be good in approximately 3 to 4 hours.  I'll mop with a hot water / butter / garlic mix after the first hour, after the meat is flipped from breast side down to breast side up, every 30 minutes, just to prevent drying.  I've left the skin on, so I may throw it in the oven and hit the broiler for 10 minutes when the internal temp gets around 150, just to crisp up the skn. It's a work in progress, we'll see how it works tomorrow.  Cheers.

661 Oh, gushie! I have been reading your posts about your horsies. Long time ago, I worked as a carriage driver in Chicago for a man that was, honestly, a miserable excuse for a human being but really did have an eye and a hand for horses. He could find an animal at auction that, to everyone else's eye looked only good for slaughter or had a serious "temperment problem" and give them a whole new life as a working horse after however many months it took on his farm in Indianna. Such amazingly beautiful and sweet tempered superstars worked out of that carriage company. I got to work directly with the man and "my horse" Babe a few times and it was a wonder. How can you be such an insensetive, paranoid dick when it comes to your human employees and just *get it* when you see someone trying to out-stubborn a bored, smart, barn-sour, old nag? "No, sir. I know I'm late but there are 2 other carriages out there and I don't want the stablehands to wrestle the bit into her mouth this morning." "How much longer do you think you can stand on your tippy-toes, on top of that crate, with her head up like that?" "Not much longer, sir. But as soon as I get feeling back in my arms I'll stand back up and start all over again. Babe's stubborn and proud but more importantly, she's smart so she'll get bored of this before I will." "You think so?" "Yes. I KNOW so! She's bored being in the paddock, especially when her buddies Mikey and Dusty aren't there, she's bored in the carriage stalls with nothing to do, she's bored and contemptuous when she can see the "ring rats" and she's bored hanging around the carriage stand waiting for a ride. But mostly she hates being FORCED to do boring stuff." "So what's your solution?" "Let her have some fun "defying" me until that becomes more boring than hitching up to the carriage. It really is no fun refusing to take the bit when your boring-ass driver just stands there and keeps up a gentle pressure. No drama. No stablehands..." 20 min. later on Wells St.... "Deety, you know how you're not supposed to trot the horses?" "Yes sir, it's bad for their shoes on city streets. I try to avoid it." He had me kick her up to a trot and showed me the different carriage pulling gaits that she has in a windy way to the carriage stand. "Oh! She is sooo handsome! Did you see her ears? She was having so much fun. I could feel her mouth all the way from back here!" "Deety. Any other carriage driver I see malingering the way you were this morning, I will not allow to go out! But for the evening shifts, I want you to be last out of the yard and take this route and put her through all her paces." "But,but... that might put me last in line after 13 other horses!" "Check with me and if your carriage, tack, and personal gear are all squared away before the gates open, you get to claim 4th slot. I'll let the Street Manager know." "Sounds fair..." "I can't have my good horses turning sour. You know how to work with her."

666 & actors with bad movies. I hate those kinds of list. Every damn actor has bad movies. I don't understand the Cage hate. Yes he had some bad movies, but he has had some good movies as well. For example I liked National Treasure - the first one. The sequel though was bleh, but that is normal. Same for Kevin Cosner.

Every one of the actors on that list have had movies that I liked and every one had movies that I didn't like.

Vic- I too believe that all actors have some bad movies in the library but for me, Cosner is a special case. After dances with wolves he got such a big head that he felt all Cosner movies need more time for more Cosner and every movie became a three hour marathon.

I liked him before that.

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings off fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty GodÂ….

Florida Republican Rep. Sandy Adams is demanding answers from Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, who has been unable to point to any cases where the U.S. enforced existing law requiring the government to stop issuing visas to individuals from countries that refuse to take their citizens back from the U.S. After a six-month detention period, such illegal immigrants are released into U.S. communities.

So if a country refuses to take back one of their criminals we are supposed to stop issuing visas. Why have we never heard of this law, and most importantly, why is it not being enforced?
