Well no doubt they helped it along but looking at this chart it's clear that there was a house price bubble going on in almost every single industrialized country at the same time. And why was there so much money to hand out? Well mostly due to the central banks and lack of price inflation thanks to cheap Chinese stuff:

so I gave a take-home test to my students a couple of weeks ago.
I didn't prepare it carefully enough, because one of the questions that I asked, the exact same question was also in the textbook. So if you just read the book you could answer the exam question no problem.
So, *most* of my students got that question right.
And yes, I did say "most". And yes, it was a TAKE-HOME EXAM.

She probably isn't quitting. She had one of those meetings where she is given the option of resigning or being fired. In all my time, usually they agree to resign to save face, but there are some who want to be fired.
To the powers that be, they fired her. To everyone else, she really missed her crumb crunchers.

Looks like there will be a firearm purchase my future. Monday nite we were at GC for Vet's Appreciation day, ran into a guy I see at the range occasionally, we got talking and he told me that his shooting days were curtailed due to a retina problem. Can't handle recoil lest one becomes detached, if I got that right. .22's are okay, nothing larger.
He has an M-14 to dispose of, along with some other stuff, going over to his place Sunday to look at it. That would be tits for me, I loved the one I carried.

There is a reason why the GOP convention has very little drama, and that reason is winner take all. Most of the states have winner take all primaries, so like 2008, McCain won about 47% of the vote in the primary and 72% of the delegates.
As for the 25% Mittens has, if he starts winning states, and others start dropping out, most of those will probably start supporting whoever the front runner is. The only time Ron Paul! started getting any play was when everyone else dropped out leaving only Paul and McCain. McCain then started getting in the upper 70s of the vote.

Nope. The person they are promoting in her place (from a different group) does honestly have more overall experience then me in the specific role from her previous position, but it would appear what my ex-manager made up is almost certainly the deciding factor.
The odd thing is they had a small round of layoffs and didn't hit me. So he knows I wanted the role, that I'm not happy in my current position, and that I strongly disagree with the ex-manager's assessment and therefore am certainly a risk to leave if I get an equivalent offer...though in fairness they do pay me well enough that isn't actually easy to find right now.

Cool, I still have the one I carried. When I got back I got tasked to take a load of M14 and 16's to a national guard unit who were removing the selector switch so they could be sold. Mine happened to go home with me that day with an appropriat BOS. It looks like crap, I took it apart when i first got it and painted all the wood inside and out forest green to keep the stock from swelling but I still love it.

That thought did occur to me, but we recently had layoffs, they (at least nominally) didn't hit her, though they hit her group pretty hard and then she voluntarily resigns to stay home with the kids.
I know her husband doesn't make nearly as much as her, so I have a hard time believing she would voluntarily quit, especially after she fought so hard to make sure she would stay just a few months ago.
On the other hand if she was one of the laid off, would they really give her, and her only, the option of saving face?

OhioDan, yes, the celery salt. And a split celery stalk with the greenage still on, standing up in each glass, for a garnish. If you can get the hybrid green "par-cel," people will remember that drink. One bunch goes a long way.
If you make a whole batch, and use V8 (you do, don't you?), try stirring in a can of spiced diced tomatoes. The Dei Fratelli brand is the best of these. I can smell them cooking right now. The cannery's about a mile away. There's the Mexican version, and the Italian version. Can't lose.

I once had to fire a guy at this particular company for gross incompetence. HR kept him in line by agreeing to not contest unemployment so it is indeed a carrot that companies will use to keep people in line...

Yes. They also probably gave her a severance package to go along with the resignation letter. A resignation is just much more easy for the company than firing.
What happened at your old company sounds like what happened at my wife's company. They had a bunch of layoffs, then the department head resigns suddenly. Everyone she works with thinks he left to pursue other interests, but he didn't have a job lined up. He was fired.

When I got one job, the first meeting I had was with an employee who did some special projects. The owner and I sat with this employee and requested passwords to the computer she used. She said no. We kept asking her for the password, and she kept refusing. We finally told her, passwords or the door. She chose the door. (she was also the girlfriend of the person I took the place of) She filed for UE in a county several counties over. It took us an hour and a half to go to the hearing on her benefits, but we did it. She was pissed that we showed up, and doubly pissed when she got denied. Insubordination is a bitch.

My father worked for a high, high profile business and the owner, very high profile, had his loser son "work" with my father. And by work I mean do nothing but annoy those doing actual work. The guy kept whinning about not having business cards so my dad went to the business office and asked them to get him some. I wouldn't say it was the upper echelon doing it since my wife's company had just been bought out a year and a half earlier, and the division in the state had just had all of its operations integrated into the parent company's. Most of the middle managers there are not really needed. My wife says that most of them only just approve vacation requests.
We are still nervous about the whole takeover and whether or not she will keep her job, but she did get a raise and a promotion, and they brought her to the head office and regional HQ for training and meetings.

American Graffiti reminded people that some older stuff was still good, and sooner or later a lot of people find out that there is a lot of gold old blues and jazz.
Yet, for about a year everywhere I go I've been running into kids listening to 70's music. I just can't imagine more than just a few kids from my age failing to pitch a fit if anyone tried to get them to listen to mainstream music from WWII.

i do think right now pop music is especially bad and impossible to dance to in a fashion that makes you look like anything but a gyrating animal without dignity. i think the rock of the 70s and 60 s was good, and listenable, and right now swing is all the rage again. i have a couple 23 yo friends and a 22 yo kid and they are all dying to lindy hop, and learn to swing. So with that goes big band and lots of super music that i frankly cant fault them for loving (since i was into it, before it was cool in the 80's)

She and her boyfriend knew exactly when he was going to be fired. He had gotten the tech guy to program the phones so that he could listen in on employees phone calls. The owner owned 5 different companies and I was the #3. The #2 and I had many conversations about replacing this guy, and there were conversations that I only had with the owner that this guy told to a trade magazine after he was fired. So he knew the day and time he was going to be fired. He went in and made massive changes to databases in those computers. His girlfriend had the access code to one of those databases.
The tech guy was told to back up the computer the morning before, but he decided not to do it. When we finally found out about the phone system, he thought that it was okay. He thought the manager could listen in on the owner's and CFO's phone calls even though he reported to them. His drunk ass was gone a couple of months later.
Sadly nothing illegal or any pron. This was the early 90's, so the intertubes were still in their infancy.

It is one of the big banks. They did a bunch of hiring for a new department a year ago, then closed it down 6 months later.

I don't have one, and have no experience with one. It looks like a really simple analog synth -- which I've got covered six ways from Sunday. Analogs tend not to "play nice" as anything but leads, as they tend not to be reproducible enough for backing tracks -- and then you've got to be looking at something where an analog synth lead makes sense.

like Miss Tammy i fear this is is a dress rehearsal. What really bothers me is the creepy cult like atmosphere and the Jonestown-ness of it.
