— andy I'd love to promise you 'rons and 'ronettes a redemption of the ... ummm ... weaker efforts put in during Maet's absence. But I don't want to get out over my skis on this thing.
First up, I'm happy to report that Ace has been located. Turns out this "vacation" was just a cover story though, as it looks like his pilot for Saffron: Intergalactic Space-Whore got picked up.

Yeah, I have a feeling he's not coming back.
JC Penney caved to complaints that the ad below is sexist, so they pulled it (no pun intended). Sexist? Hell, I didn't even know they were trying to sell me something. Other than a tingle in the swimsuit area, I mean.
OK, that's two hotties in a row. Unfortunately, I don't have much to balance that out for the 'ronettes myself, but Rosetta, Roamy and the other awesome chicks over at The Hostages collect 'em up every Wednesday for you.

Well that about wraps up this excursion into the wilds of the ONT. Hope you're entertained.

Heh. It's getting so Egyptians and Syrians can't win a war by sticking an AK over a wall and spraying bullets wildly. Oh the humanity.

Help a sister out?
I dog-sat for a friend a couple of weeks ago. Dog either had fleas when he got here or got them immediately afterward outside (I don't have pets). He was on something that supposedly rendered the females sterile (don't know if I believe that), and I took him to his vet and got him medicine to kill the live fleas.
Ten days after his absence and after cleaning the house, I'm still finding live fleas--not a lot, but some (four or so in the past 3 days). Everything I've read online talks about vacuuming the carpets with boric acid and the like.
I have all hardwood floors. Will the little bastards eventually go away with nothing to eat, will a bug bomb work, or do I need to call in the professionals?

Propably had some eggs left that hatched. Just buy flea powder, sprinkle overnight then vaccum up. Some of the powder will be left in the cracks but will go away over time (unless you have toddler crawling on floor don't do it) and the fleas will be gone.

Possibly, but God it's been years since we used that for each other and I really don't recall ever using it in an email. True.. but still pretty strange. It's just that neither her or I have used that name for years, but I guess it's possible they got it from her emails. I am going to email her tomorrow. I will have to break my rule not to ever email her but guess I will because I want to know. I don't ever email her anymore because 3 years ago I sent her a video about the Frank/Dodd video about Frannie Mae and Freddie Mac and she got pissed (she's a die hard lib). Thread this: On Nov 8 an asteroid 150 meters wide will pass within 180,000 miles of the Earth...inside the orbit of the moon. that hardly ever happens. Last month a small asteroid passed by at about the same distance, between the Earth and the moon.
In two weeks an asteroid 8 meters-wide will pass by also inside the moons orbit. The next day it passes within 150,000 miles of the moon and will be easily visible with scopes and binox. Go to spaceweather or ssdjplnasa.
My understand is that its rare for this many objects to pass inside the moons orbit this close together.

Posted by: Alderman of Hinxworth at October 06, 2011 11:25 PM (OKhgI)
heh. There are actually a bunch of laws trying to stamp out cattle theft from Anglo-Saxon England, which really sparked my attention when I was starting this paper several years ago. The Irish, of course, had a whole way of war built around cattle theft - being a pastoral people, cattle were an important part of their livelihood, but instead of being owned outright most cattle were rented from the local chieftain. The cheiftains' power was therefore directly linked to how many cattle they owned and so how many clients they could have, and since the best way to increase your herd was to steal someone else's, cattle rustling became the most common way of warfare. This in turn meant that their ideas about honor were a bit different from the norm - the place of honor was at the rear or the army, since fighting was done in retreat, either trying stop the enemy from stopping a stolen herd or protecting a household running from raiders. the Anglo-Saxons had a different way of going about war, though - they were a agrarian, not a pastoral people, though I wonder what their wars against the Welsh looked like.

My only and self-aggrandizing point is that the novel has been taught incorrectly since it was introduced to high school lit classes.
If any parents or teachers out there care, re-read it and ask yourself 'who is Holden talking to,' and 'why is he talking?' It should be pretty apparent what Salinger was doing.
Hemingway is worthy only because he decided that plot and character are superior to fart-sniffing prose. He pretty much destroyed the idea that superfluous text was necessary or praiseworthy. Top that off with interesting stories.
Steiny was a political hack but a very effective one. Who would you rather read, Steiny or Sinclair?

Continue! Ah, but now thy tongue is still.
Allow me then to offer a response.
Describe the program called Fast and Furious to me, pray.
Holder: What?
I: What country dost thou hail from?
H: What?
I: Thou sayest thou dost hail from distant What?
I know but naught of thy fair country What.
What language speak they in the land of What?
H: What?
I: English, base knave, dost thou speak it?
H: Aye!
I: Then hearken to my words and answer them!
Describe to me Fast and Furious!
H: What?
I: Speak 'What' again! Thou cur, cry 'What' again!
I dare thee utter 'What' again but once!
I dare thee twice and spit upon thy name!
Now, paint for me a portraiture in words,
If thou hast any in thy head but 'What',
Of Fast and Furious!

I have been trying to get in to sci fi for years. I'm afraid my taste is still very juvenile. Very. Like the Heinlein books he wrote for kids, the ones with the red headed mom whose name escapes me at the moment. Hazel, maybe?
I can't seem to make the jump in to the real spacy sci fi, or the fantasy sci fi, either. CAse in point, I tried to read Hyperion today. I couldn't get past the first chapter. I just couldn't melt in to all the sci fi terms. I think I'm too old now.

I am afraid not. It is mostly a cultural study of their military: how the VERY well established practice of feud influenced the way they approached warfare. Lots of time and energy looking at stuff like how their family structure worked (much like ours), how they dealt with conflicting loyalties, how they prortrayed their heroes (there are a lot of feuds in Beowulf, and many of them do not followlook like what we would expect an idealized feud to look like - conflicting loyalties, etc. Very interesting), varying levels in warfare, the treatment of the dead and captured, etc.
My conclusion is that war was usually waged for socio-economic or political reasons unconnected with feuding, but the cultural emphasis on vengeance as part of a code of honor, the structure of their military, the lack of a clearly defined clan system, and the fact that war was actually dangerous for leaders (kings died surprisingly often in battle in this period. After 1066, only Richard III died in battle, whereas Penda of Mercia kills at least three or four enemy kings within his lifetime, and may have died violently himself) meant that the idea of feud works its way into all kinds of conflicts, even ones where you have a members of teh same family fighting each other.

Greyfox your subject is facinating.
The thing about lots of kings being killed in battle changing to very few made me wonder. Might that be associated with the consolidation of larger kingdoms under fewer rulers(say kings for Scotland, England, and Wales rather than the many in the time of King Lear), making those rulers more "valuable" as their deaths would cause a greater disruption? If it is associated would it be cause or affect?
My knowledge if the subject is quite shallow and I always love to learn more.

I'm really looking forward to this class. The only "formal" training I ever got was a 10 minute range safety lecture in boot camp that generally went "Do like I say or I'll put my boot up your ass" and then we shot M1911s that had been converted to .22 caliber, if we hit the paper the instructors were overjoyed. They told us that since we were military we were required to have weapons training, but if our duties included carrying weapons we would get training on them, now shoot your rounds and get the F*CK off of my range! Good times, good times.

That is certainly part of it. Kings stop dying in battle after the viking invasions (Harold I at Hastings is the exception) - there are simply fewer of them, and after England was united the great nobles (ealdormen and earls) become the primary warleaders. Those are killed from time to time.
Other issues are that the growth of chivalry means that warriors actually start taking prisoners. Prior to this there are very few prisoners and those were taken were often executed or mutilated, something that I am arguing was part of their feud mentality. Also, there may be a shift in the ideology of kingship that de-emphasized the king as warrior and allowed them to stay out of the fighting more often.

Did NOT mean any offense to the other kind of Special Needs.

Yeah, and I've got a Blackhawk Serpa holster and a Glock...which has gotten a foul reputation in some circles lately...complete with videos.
Polliwog, my Mom used to do that, too, and then just finish up with the "YOU KNOW WHO I'M TALKING TO" bit. And then after we had been walloped and were standing there sniffling she'd give us the "Quitchersniveling or I'll give you something to cry about" line, which sort of seemed ridiculous since she had just DONE that...but I knew enough not to say anything. I was young, not stupid. I had a brother for that.

I usually carry concealed, but the Serpa is a fine holster. You just use the PAD of your finger to disengage the lock instead of the TIP of the finger. It just works better.

The piggy's name is Patches which is why it generally doesn't make it into the "what was your name again?" mix. Given that I picked the names for all three daughters it's pretty sad to be stuck looking at one saying "At least I know your name's not Eevee (the cat)."

I carry two mags in an external mag holder, but the Grok is usually concealed. It's funny but no one has ever asked about them. When I'm OC'ing the Grok I sometimes get questions about it, including one guy who wanted to know if I worked at the nearby prison. Nothing negative, though, and usually I get nothing at all. For the most part it doesn't seem to bother anyone.

I've never had a problem with it, but then again it's not like I'm rolling around on the ground with it, either. Just like anything else, keep it clean and you should be fine. The videotaped problems with them are usually people carrying Glocks in them, they use the fingertip to disengage the lock and when the pistol clears the holder the finger goes right into the trigger guard and then BLAM! hole in the leg. It's happened twice that I know of. Two problems with it, number one use the PAD of the finger not the TIP, and two WHY THE F*CK ARE YOU DRAWING A PISTOL WITH THE TRIGGER FINGER??? There should be absolutely NO pressure on your trigger finger during a draw. Maybe I'm not trained, but I'm not completely inept either.

Guy Halsall, Warfare and Society in the Barbarian West is excellent, though a bit dense, and covers all of western Europe, not just England. Stephen Pollington, The English Warrior: From Earliest Times till 1066 is also good, and a lot easier to read. Campbell et al. The Anglo-Saxons is a nice overview of the era and culture, not just warfare, that is not too dense and has nice illustrations (Don't laugh! Archeology is an important part of the record in this era)
After that the original documents; Bede's Ecclesiastical History of the English People, (Penguin) Beowulf (Rebsamen or Heaney for beautiful translation, Swanton for literal accuracy), Hamer's collection of translated minor poetry. The Word Exchange is supposed to be good, but I haven't had time to look at it closely yet. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, Swanton's translation, is very nice, but isn't for the casual reader, I don't think - it contains five different versions and most of it is "(date) In this yearbishop Daniel died, and so-and-so went to Rome. So and so fought so and so, and both died." Not always very exciting.
Interlibrary loans are a good way to save some money, particularly since some of these are hard to find cheap. Halsall is one of those university press releases with a small print run, for example.

Even if the trigger finger does enter the trigger guard, as long as you are using the pad of the finger your finger is straight and ends up on the side of the trigger, not wrapped around the front of it. And even if it should, since you are properly drawing with the three fingers wrapped around the butt of the pistol you will have no pressure on the trigger at all anyway. And even if you do, the Grok has enough of a take-up that you aren't going to actually pull the trigger back enough to fire the gun. And if you do...you are a dumb-ass. Man up and admit to dumb-assery, don't blame the gun or the holster.

Truthfully, the guy that sold me the gun sold the holster with it. Since I don't usually OC I've never bothered to get another one. It also keeps the gun tucked in close to my side so I don't hit it with my elbow, so that's a plus. It just works, so I haven't seen the need to change it.
I do have a couple of IWB holsters, though, and one that goes around the back that I really wanted to like but didn't. I don't like the way I have to twist my hand up to draw from that one.

You did get the can opener with it, right? I have a gel-filled buttstock pad (I got it from Amazon, of all places) and I have some range time scheduled for next week so I'm going to try it out. I'm expecting it to be better, that Mosin does have quite the kick. Hold it in tight to the shoulder and it helps, if there is any room for it to move when it kicks back it's going to hurt a lot more. Ask me how I know...but damn, does it make a nice splatter when you dead-center a watermelon with it...
I really want an M38 carbine to go along with the 91/30, and I don't know why.

We have to make a 4 hour trek north up the coastline to where we pull out. If we could stay late, we would. Nothing like a bit of frostbiting (fall/spring) so long as you're geared up. We've had some great rock and roll rides in the past with big, icy spray . . . you know you're alive!

Reading about Harry Cockshaft Reid's rule change in the Senate and basically stripping the 'Pubs of any say in governance, does this mean the Senate Republicans can't actually be blamed for shit anymore since they have fuck all to do with legislating?
Why don't the 'Pubs just pack up and go home? Call 'em after the election is over. The Dems officially own this country.

Not exactly. It just prevents the amendment and deliberation process. They still have to get to cloture (60 votes) on any bill. So, the R's still have a role to play. Harry Reid is a menace though, no doubt.
