— Maetenloch The Truth About Violence
Well the best defense against violence is to simply not be around when bad shit goes down. But if you do happen to be there, then the next best is to run away - there's never such a thing as safe brawling and people get killed everyday that way. And if you can't run away, well then you're going to have to fight long enough until you can get away.
And should someone ever try to abduct you, then fight like your life depends on it. Because if they succeed, statistically you will end up dead.
If you find yourself in a situation where a predator is trying to control you, the time for listening to instructions and attempting to remain calm has passed. It will get no easier to resist and escape after these first moments. The presence of weapons, the size or number of your attackers—these details are irrelevant. However bad the situation looks, it will only get worse. To hesitate is to put yourself at the mercy of a sociopath. You have no alternative but to explode into action, whatever the risk. Recognizing when this line has been crossed, and committing to escape at any cost, is more important than mastering physical techniques. The key thing is that you have to predecide what you're going to do in this situation before it happens. I highly recommend reading On Combat by David Grossman and any video by Det. J.J. Bittenbinder (particularly where he talks about the importance of denying privacy to a criminal).
(video below the fold)
This video is about 20 years old but pretty much every piece of advice he gives is just as valid as ever. Take the half hour to watch it, it may end up saving your life one day.
So the SF Weekly Ran a Snarkish Anti-Gun Article
With this infographic illustrating what assault weapons are. See if you can guess what's wrong with it.

Barney Frank: The Nasty Little Jerk We Knew All Too Well
Besides all the familiar reasons to be glad he's gone we can add shameful lying/shameful ignorance:
Frank was present at the 2007 Maine drug bust of his current boyfriend, James Ready. But like the Herb Moses controversy, the story didn’t get out for several years. Explaining that he was “not a great outdoorsman,” Frank claimed that he “would not recognize most plants,” including the marijuana ones in Ready’s home—coincidentally, a plant that the lawmaker had long sought to decriminalize.

Getting Republicans to line up behind Mitt Romney, it turns out, is like trying to stuff a cat into a trash can. No matter how you present the feline to the receptacle, at least one claw always manages to reach out at the last second and cling desperately to the rim.
Sword Stuff
How a traditional Japanese sword gets made.
And how a modern samurai slices like a hammer with one.
And for those wondering - yes my sword wound has pretty much healed up. But sadly my hand modeling days are at an end.
Porn for Women: The Twilight Saga
Why are so many women gaga over a dopey high school girl and sparkly vampires? Answer: It's lady pr0n.
As a man, understanding the female obsession with Twilight is difficult. However, there is one form of illicit entertainment which seems an instructive point of comparison. Twilight is to women what porn is to men.
Pornography imagines that women exist for the sole purpose of satisfying men. The women in porn are not only willing, but eager....So it is in Twilight, only with the roles reversed. Edward Cullen and Jacob Black adore Bella, not due to any apparent merit, but simply because she is there. Indeed, they indulge her whims and endure her moods without conditions of any kind. Any objection they do offer is complimentary. IÂ’ll only turn you into a vampire if you marry me. Every conflict between the three leads only serves to demonstrate how thoroughly both males are devoted to Bella.

The term "assault weapon" has always rankled Second Amendment absolutists. Handled properly, an umbrella could be an "assault weapon."
Nope. Handled properly an umbrella IS an assault weapon.

And the problem is that when a society acts like this it encourages this sort of violence.
What stops gangs from engaging in such random violence? Yes, the police threat plays a part, but just as much so the fact that you might pick on a navy seal who keeps a loaded shot gun by the front door.

I did learn one thing from my grandfather, he once got surrounded by a gang, so what he did was pick the smallest little shit in the pack, then went completely loose on him. The gang never bothered him again. Actually I think he joined it, was never really clear on what happened afterward, but the point was if you're backed into a corner, pick the douchebag you're most likely to win a fight against.

Yeah having friends and family around does constrain your getting away options.
The closest I ever came to killing someone was years ago when a bar fight happened out of nowhere and engulfed my parents during dinner. I would have high tailed it out of there right then except my parents were hemmed in. So I smashed a bottle and was ready to use it on the guy threatening my mother. Luckily before things escalated too far there was a sudden opening and we all were able to run out to the car and make an escape. And this was in a very nice area of Seattle too!

Twilight series is porn? I cannot believe how threatened men are by the Twilight series! It's not porn because porn is nekkid people or parts doing sexual activities. There's no porn in the Twilight movies. It's fantasy. Y'all know all about fantasy. . . Many of you consume it like candy. Star Wars. Lord of the Rings. Star Trek. Those movies aren't porn either, but they sure do fulfill alot of male fantasies onscreen. Think about it before you try to justify your jollifications via the wankernet.

I mentioned a while back I'd gotten a new second monitor, so that now both monitors were exactly the same model. However, the second monitor flickered when I scrolled up and down.
To try and figure out if it was the new monitor, I swapped the two monitors. Saw the same issue with both. To see if it was an issue with the VGA cable, since it is always the monitor on the VGA plug, I used a new VGA cable....same issue.
So...do I have to consider getting a new video card? Or might this still be a setting issue?

Every other fucking car in the world, they advertise how awesome it is because of safety and you see them ramming them into brick walls. Only product advertised like that. Like, you never see people throw their iPhones at a wall. Anyway, so cars, crash tests, smashy smashy, people dig it. EVs? Green green, Gaia cunni nonsense, but where's the smashy smashy? Oh? Let's try not to think about it?
Are we really surprised at all by this?
I wanna see some dude drive his Volt into a brick wall and at the moment of impact yell SHAZAM and see if there's a big lightning bolt. That would be cool.

Posted by: 18-1 at December 01, 2011 10:25 PM (3aXbg)
Have you considered just using a single monitor with the VGA cable to determine if it still does it with a single monitor rather than when the computer is trying to handle two displays? Because if there's no problem then it probably wouldn't be a settings issue and is likely just your computer not having much success in handling the dual monitors.

so, on that subject i always have knives on me since i live in California and a concealed carry is hard to get and i have been gutting feed sacks and shaving bags as a daily routine since i was 13 years old.
but this is the deal-- you always forget what you learn in self defense class, if you are really truly attacked. Frightened women rarely pull off slick moves unless they are drilled into them daily. When attacked the adrenalin will flood your system, you will get tunnel vision, you will panic and flail. Learn to flail productively, and LOUDLY. Scream your head off
then if you do manage to hurt your assailant be sure to keep saying, to anyone with a uniform or without "i thought he was gonna kill me, i just wanted him to stop."
Say it over and over. this is as important as flailing productively and never say anything else.

Ok, I set the computer to only use the VGA monitor - couldn't get the flickering while I scroll issue.
Turned the DVI one on too and I see the issue again.
Now, with the second monitor I used to have, I did not originally see the flickering issue - that started a month or two ago, along with other issues (which is why I replaced it).
Hmm..that might indicate there is an issue with the settings then. Because it can't be the hardware, it didn't happen when I first set up the dual display (I was running with it for about 5 months before I had any issues).

Excellent advice.
About a year ago, someone attempted a public strong-arm robbery on me, trapping me between a ticket machine and a pillar and him. He indicated he had a gun (waggling an object in his jacket pocket) and told me to give him my money. I smiled and said, "Let me see what I have for you in my bag of BOOM!"
When I looked up, he was running like hell - I had a sudden, terrible urge to shout, "Wait! Wait! Weren't you trying to rob me?"
I didn't, of course, because then I'd have spent the rest of the evening giving boring statements to police who wouldn't even try to find the guy.
Terrifying the opposition also works.

Try reducing the resolution then? is your new monitor a larger one so you're using a higher resolution? That would sort of make it a settings/hardware issue. In that your hardware can't handle the settings you want to run it at. Like attempting to play a game on max settings when your computer can only handle medium.

Mind you, first there would have to be an intellectual defence of the anti-Darwinist standpoint that didn't rely upon transparent lies (like Stein's Expelled). Auster's comments here might be a better start.

GINGRICH: “I’m going to be the nominee. It’s very hard not to look at the recent polls and think that the odds are very high I’m going to be the nominee. And by the way I don’t object if people want to attack me, that’s their right. All I’m suggesting that it’s not going to be very effective and that people are going to get sick of it very fast. And the guys who attacked each other in the debates up to now, every single one of them have lost ground by attacking. So they should do what they and their consultants want to do. I will focus on being substantive and I will focus on Barack Obama.”

Yep Hardware/settings issue. Your computer is just having problems processing both screens at those settings. I'm guessing you were using settings closer to the 1152x 864 70Hz rather than the other two on the monitor you replaced.

One can build a purely materialistic, "darwinian" set of ethics, but very few people would like it.
Objectivism, it seems to me, is in fact a MUCH watered down version of it...

Cool. I linked a video the other night of a guy doing this skill shot. There seems like there is a lot to do in the game. I'm tempted to get it, since I finished Dragon Age 2 on a second playthrough, finished another playthrough of ME2. But I'm expecting to get Assassins Creed Revelations and Arkham City for Christmas (and if I don't I'll buy them myself) so I don't know if I want to lose myself in that game.
Currently playing The Witcher 2, which is... different. Bioware's "sex" scenes have nothing on this game. Europeans are weird.

Never played the first one or heard of it for that matter. Its based on some Polish novels. The storyline seems pretty good so far, and unlike other games where you get to make choices there isn't really an absolute good or absolute evil option most of the time. And the middle of the game is supposed to be completely different based on your choices meaning to do everything in the game you must play at least twice.
But hell the game starts off with your character in bed with a naked red-head. And you can go partake in the brothel if you so choose. Like I said, Europeans are weird.
And yeah Skyrim just looks so much prettier than Dragon Age. The dragons look more badass too.

Bought the Remington at an estate sale, it was part of a collection. The serial # indicates it 's real, I haven't chased it any further, though. I merely wanted a period shooter, and this one does great for that. I'll get it fixed, if I can find an original replacement part, if not then a repop will have to do. Way too early to call this game. About the only constant will be Romney being shoved down our throats by the media. Anything else is possible (with the obvious exceptions of Paul and Huntsman - f'n lunatics!).

Yeah, and um, its well pretty much full frontal. You can of course avoid the services of the brothel. And the only other uh "interlude" you could avoid by saying you'd go alone I think. But come on you're going to a garden to grab a special magical rose. You've got to take the lady you're boinking with you on that.

He signed a lease today and I will be down there between Christmas and New Years (kill me now). May I try again? So very grateful it was both of us and not just me, as I had thought. Hugs!!!

It was kinda anti-climatic. You get nervous during the public defense and at the end of that ordeal everyone is clapping, but during the private defense, the committee members are muted while they give their (mostly) constructive criticism. Doesn't help either that after the public defense one is pretty numb...
But hey, I'm not complaining! It's just a bit different from what I expected and the anticipation was worse than the "ordeal". Funny how the brain plays tricks on you like that.

The crystal candlesticks and champagne glasses shattered as he grabbed her again and flung her on top of Dodd. "Then Kennedy threw himself on top of the woman. The waitress implored Mr. Kennedy to 'Get off me!' "Another waitress entered to find 'things all tipped over and Kennedy was on top, [the waitress] was in the middle and Dodd was on the bottom.' At that point the sandwich was disassembled."

This will get me banned for sure or black balled, but I always got a bit of a kick out of him and Charlie Rangel. Hate their politics, but both of them tend to call a spade a spade when necessary, and I have heard Fwankie stand up for Republicans more than once when he felt they were being unfairly bagged on.

In the early 90s, 'The Bridges of Madison County' was porn for middle-aged women. As one psychologist put it in the New York Times Review of Books, "My husband and I have an agreement. He doesn't bring Penthouse to our bed and I don't bring this kind of garbage."
Twilight is porn for 14-year-old girls who aren't ready for anything like the reality of intimate relationships and what naturally follows sex. The culmination of the series has the heroine producing a baby who is hyper-intelligent and out of diapers almost immediately. Not like the boring and messy real thing.

Either way, what few friends I have found in life...I try to be loyal to them. Which means I tolerate a lot of stupidity. To be fair, my best friend that supports OWS isn't the kind of lefty who gratuitously insults people like he's in grade school. He's just...a college student . I still hope he'll turn around someday.

Some friends of ours young daughter went to DC 15-20 years ago with stars in her eyes to be an intern for a CA representative. A drunken Teddy groped her not once, but twice at a party in front of dozens of onlookers. It didn't raise a single eyebrow from anybody present - in fact she was pretty much told to get used to it.
For some reason she decided that wasn't going to be her career path.

That is commendable. C.S. Lewis advises that "every man should have a fairly large graveyard in which to bury the faults of his friends", but remember the key adjective here is fairly large, not infinitely large. But as long as your one friend isn't gratuitously insulting people, then there is some hope for illumination/redemption for him.

Mine did too. They ran a smug article about "improving the civility of comments" and "the days of people being able to hide behind pseudonyms are over". Voila: a paper that used to get 40-60 comments on most hot-topic articles is down to 5 or 6 comments on its best days. It's easy to run a "civil" comments section after you've driven everyone away.

If you find a cheap copy of U9, some of them came with a disc of ultima 1-8 as well.

That is a bit of a misidentification. Both the PS3 and Xbox 360 have 512 MB of RAM. The PS3 is a bit reminiscent of the Amiga in that everything in the lower 256 MB is dedicated to graphic operations and connected in a way that optimizes that, leaving the rest to other stuff using somewhat less expensive RAM.
But you don't have to use the RAM that way. It is just an assumption that almost anything created for the platform is going to be graphics intensive. You can put whatever you want in the graphics optimized memory but the CPU cannot access it as fast as it can the other bank of memory. The situation in which this is likely to be a problem in a PS3 app is difficult to imagine. The Xbox uses a less complex approach that has its own virtues and drawbacks. In general, there was much more price sensitivity in the Xbox design.
It may be annoying for the guys ganging together dozens of PS3s to create supercomputers but that era has passed. You can do far more for the money now with a PC motherboard that support 3 or 4-way SLI and some current high end video cards.

I get that. The girl I was engaged to at one point (that I just mentioned in another post) was my friend for awhile after we broke up. Then, at one point she got pissed at me...told a mixture of private information and half truths to common friends of ours. It's not so much incriminating, just embarrassing. You're talking things I ONLY told her because I thought she was my soulmate.
A year later, my dumbass decided to reconcile and let bygones by bygones. I didn't trust her, but I cared too much about her to hold a grudge. It was probationary in a sense. She became a hassle , though. She'd disagree with me on something and go back to bringing up stupid shit and never apologize. At all.
I had to just...realize not everyone is worth the effort. It's hell to love someone and know that when you see them, all the love turns into murderous rage. I still kind of feel for her and check her facebook account on occasion. I can wish her the best, and hope she grows up. I'll never talk to her again, though.
It's part of the reason I appreciate my other friends. They stuck with me in tough times, I'll always appreciate that more than sharing political views.
tl;dr , I know.

Gonna go super nerd here..
Not every gun on that chart is from the Halo games. Some are depicted in the comic books and videos. So they are all from the Halo Universe. Only about half to 2/3rds are playable.
Making that list even more absurd. Not only have most of them only hurt digital characters but have merely been DRAWN. Thus giving merit to the idea that "assault weapons" are most hated for the image, not reality.

Nothing complainable!!!! Really. I am in good health.
Just getting old. Not doing as well in the Biology class (necessary for transfer) as I would have done, say 5, 10 years ago. And realizing, I don't have the bounce back I used to. Don't have the brainpower (or energy) I used to. Used to be easy to memorize 1001 enzymes and such.
Programming class going well, not just the bio ... Still, bio is one of the last non-major classes I have to take, so hopefully it gets better ...
And, the husband & I are getting ready to move into the house we're going to die in ... He glares at me every time I call it that, but both of us are trying to deal with just getting old ... (He is 10 years older than I and going to retire in 5. The house is closer to his work. We lived real close to where I used to work, but they shipped the jobs to various countries with foreign languages ...)
So this Christmas is going to be spent moving and painting and getting rid of stuff ... lots of changes.
I am hoping that next semester all of this will be behind me. Get my mojo working again ... Get out of this funk.
You take care though, too, Miss T!
This too shall pass.

Hah GCE, nice work. I flirted with a teachers assistant in High School. She was 27. I thought she was just being nice to me, I had confidence problems and I hung by myself. Only had three friends. In retrospect...well, reading those stories of High School teachers with boys kind of depressed me for awhile. My school days could've been a LOT different.

Gf in college -- three days older.
After I graduated, three years older.
At my first job, 7 years older.
A while later, 11 years older.
I didn't like the way the trend was going, so I sat out a few years.
I've been hitched up with a gf just one year older for over two decades now, so I suppose that works.

Yeah. Taking a couple of years out of the scene right before that was probably a good idea, though. It was like I was chasing something that was farther and farther out of reach......and the indications were getting to be that it was "mom" -- which wasn't quite what I was hoping for. I needed to hit reset.
To put that into context, I've always been a little anachronistic -- I was at the young end of school admission and skipped second grade, so my "peers" were generally 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 years older than I was during my early years. When they became available, I ended up in "advanced placement" courses, which skewed things even more. In high school, I found that I related to some of the teachers more than most of my fellow students.
Now that I'm pushing 50, I've got "contemporaries" that are everywhere from their 20's to their 60's, especially with the internet. From my end, I appreciate the ability to blur the lines -- since the lines have never been in my favor, anyway.

Back in the 80s, a friend of mine had a penchant for modifying game graphics, long before there was a formal modding scene. Epyx produced a commercial version of Rogue for several platforms with the Atari ST version having a more graphic approach than the traditional ASCII depiction. Each item in the game was a square of four character from a custom set. The default character already had Church of the Sub-Genius messiah Bob Dobbs in a similar four four character block, so Tom's modded version of the game eliminated Bats in favor of a marauding Bob.

Which I didn't actually do. Dude, I can't help it if you use the name of a popular literary character on an internet forum, same way I can't help it, or predict, if you get things mixed up when said character comes up. I'm pretty sure people here are reasonably intelligent enough to figure out that you, the AoSHQ weblog user that is you, are not literally one of Lovecraft's Great Old Ones and can't actually drive anyone insane much less 5,000 American girls each year. Okay, I'm sorry. I didn't realize that shit would touch a nerve with you. But I need you to lighten up!

I don't generally believe in suppression of speech. But, you'll recall the famous "shouting 'fire' in a crowded theater." There are a lot of things you can be accused of without legal and long-lasting problems.
Offhand, I can't think of a single thing that can cause as much damage with as little basis as an accusation of child abuse. It's an order of magnitude worse than gang-rape, and you can see the mischief that can follow from there with Duke Lacrosse.
Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequence. Slander wasn't just invented yesterday -- if there are serious consequences to the object of speech, there should be serious consequences to the speech itself.
That said, Robert has said that it wasn't specifically malicious, and I'm inclined to believe him -- if only because that level of malice is repugnant to me. I'd be hard-pressed to think a fellow moron would stoop to the level as Nifong.

I'd only want you banned if you were intentionally or negligently conducting slanderous asymmetric attacks on people. You've said that it was an oops, and I'm ok with that. God knows I fuck up enough that I should value mercy over retribution.

We've recently seen Barney Frank call it quits after 2013. Nobody seems to even notice that he's been found in contempt of Congress, that he's had boyfriends run prostitution rings out of Frank's apartment, run marijuana distribution out of the boyfriend's apartment, or engineer the demise of the MBS market while Frank was supposed to be ensuring its safety.
On the other hand, we've seen a mere accusation of rape from an addled drug-using stripper blow apart the lives of three young men in the Duke lacrosse case while throwing their team's season and causing their coach to be fired, in a case so weak that it actually caused blowback on the DA involved when it unraveled.
Clearly, there are some crimes where "innocent until proven guilty" applies, and some where -- in practical terms -- it doesn't.
Herman Cain is currently fighting his way through allegations of sexual harassment and improper liasons. It's torpedoed his Presidential bid without having any finding of facts. Seems a lot like "guilty until proven innocent".
And then we come to child porn, where "guilty until proven innocent" isn't merely the public perception, it's also the law.
So it seems like -- among all the sorts of things that can be easily forgiven that none of us would be caught dead doing.....like running a prostitution ring out of our apartment, cheating on our taxes, dealing drugs, lying to congress, sending our nation down the tubes, etc......there are things that it's merely enough to be accused of to suffer incredible hardships -- like rape, sexual harassment, and child porn.
Further, the burden of proof for sexual harassment, rape, and child porn is often turned on its head from a commonsense approach. Since there is little cost to false accusers, but massive disruption to those accused, these become asymmetric weapons of destruction in actual, criminal cases.
As such, they're really above and beyond the realm of casual conversation. It's not that the subjects are better or worse than the source of other jokes, it's that the disproportionate attention focused on them by the government makes them far more dangerous to the recipient than other jokes that might actually be more focused. If a joke about moustaches might result in beheading, it would be appropriate to steer hair-loss jokes more onto one's scalp.

The video StreetSmarts PBS series was sponsored by BurgerKing about 30 years ago during Herman Cain's Philadelphia management (BEAMER sales program) in the 1980s, the business' investment/write-off in public education.
Consensual exploits left no evidence of his fat or missing lower lip.
