Tech Tuesday: Introducing Dropbox

Dropbox is a free 'cloud storage' service that synchronizes files across all of your computers (PC, Mac, or linux) and your mobile devices (iphone and android). The way it works is that you create a Dropbox folder on your computer and any file you put into it is quickly and automatically synced across all of your other systems. It's still saved locally but now you can access it anywhere and even through their website. Functionally it's like having a common directory on every single device you own. Plus all the cool kids are using it these days so here's your chance to get in on some of that action.
Initially they give you 2GB of space and you can get more by buying it or getting others to sign up. I've been using it for several months and have been very happy with it. It's convenient enough that it's essentially replaced my using a memory stick for copying files around. Plus if everyone in your family has a shared Dropbox folder, this makes it hassle-free to share pictures and video without having to upload them to a website.

And it's really come in handy at work where I can collaborate and share files with co-workers across the country using it's shared folder feature. I can drop a file in the folder and within a minute it's on my co-worker's computer where ever he might be. Also it replaces using FTP or a service like YouSendit for sending files too big for email since you can just send someone the url for the file in your Dropbox Public folder and have them download it directly. Another nice thing is that Dropbox automatically keeps backup version of your files so if you ever accidentally delete something, you can access previous copies from up to a month before.
Now supposedly Dropbox encrypts your files while they're stored on their servers, but if you're really concerned about sensitive documents I would encrypt them myself using TrueCrypt or forgo the service. But for casual stuff it's very convenient.
So give it a try - it don't cost nuthin.
[Sadly neither I nor Ace are getting anything for this endorsement.

Mark Steyn Is Pissed
At the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal. Not so much at how they treated him but mostly over how they treated stand up comic, Guy Earle, who had the temerity to respond to some lesbian hecklers at his show with some anti-lesbian heckler insults. For that he has been found guilty of a hate crime by the tribunal, fined $15,000 and effectively black-listed from ever performing again.
And Steyn really, really loathes head Commissar Murray Geiger-Adam:
No "human rights" law is infringed if I launch a blizzard of four-letter words at a fucking dickhead asshole cunt like Geiger-Adams. But, if Ms Pardy is around, the vulgar, witless boorishness that is the stock in trade of the average "comedy" club gets dramatically upgraded to "discrimination in the provision of a service customarily available to the public, on the basis of her sex and sexual orientation" - in other words, a hate crime.Sadly in Canada not only do they have speech police, but they also have speech courts with the power to destroy your life. This is an assault on one of the most basic principles of justice - equality before the law.

Glenn Reynolds: Old Enough To Fight, Old Enough To Drink?
Well I say if you're old enough to vote, join the military, hold political office, own a gun, get married, have a child, adopt a child, buy real estate, enter a contract, own and drive a car, own and fly a plane, and form a corporation, then you're old enough to drink.
And yes I'm still mad at Liddy Dole for blackmailing states into raising the drinking age, which is why I will never support her for any office or position.

Dating Dealbreaker: He DoesnÂ’t Believe In Global Warming
Actually the guy she dumped seemed like a pretty decent dude overall. And he's lucky he dodged this bullet:
“Global warming isn’t scientifically proven,” he wrote.WHAT??? Does he think the world is flat, too? I thought in horror. I’m from California. I’ve been recycling and saving dolphins since I was in the womb. Suddenly, memories came rushing back to me like a horrible movie montage: The arguments we had about hybrid cars—he contended that it didn’t make a damn difference, since car companies still pollute in other ways. I thought he was just defensive about his decidedly not-green race car. And the way he would constantly rib on Al Gore, even after “An Inconvenient Truth” won the Academy Award… He was always so skeptical about the merits of organic food, too. And, hey, did he even have a recycling bin?!
And poof! Just like that, my desire for him zoomed off into the sunset.

25 Years of Radiation
It's been 25 years since the disaster at Chernobyl and here's the photographic journal of Alexander who was there for the aftermath.
These operators are heroes, either because of their recklessness or ignorance. They were paid a 5 time higher wage and promised the “Zhiguli” without standing in a queue. But very few of them seem to have managed to get this car…The radiation level in the place of a photographer was 2 r/h, in the place of operators – at least 20 r/h. It means it was safe to work here only for an hour which was actually impossible in such circumstances.
Besides, Russian people pursuing big money and the “Zhiguli” left their dosimeters in a “clean area” so that they wouldn’t be sent away from the “hot area” before time. That’s the paradox of the USSR – the “Zhiguli” at the cost of life.

So this is the new thing, the "thin server" concept from years ago? Do you still own your stored data? Something tells me that this might not work out so well in real life as it does in story books.
Invest in some flash drives and keep you data there, if you don't want to clog up you hard drive.

I don't - I like to have my frames as thin as possible. I suffered with thick glasses frames throughout high school and I won't bear that indignity again.
While the thinner frames don't make me look less hideous, I still find them more convenient. And they are easy to bend back into position without assistance should the frames be bent by an errant blow to the head, which I'm apt to incur.

The Lost Weekend was on. So Ray Milland is an alcoholic, and does all sorts of terrible/pathetic things to get more booze and - get this - the people around him actually want to get him help to quit the habit. Bunch of hate-filled bigots! Don't they know the proper way to deal with his addiction is to just make sure he gets lots of free, clean booze and then give him a nice, clean room to drink it in until he dies? That way he doesn't have to worry. I mean, have these people never heard of needle exchange? Have they never been to Vancouver? Most of all, don't they understand that he was born that way? The problem with that is the desire for success drives a thriving culture.
"Success" can be defined in many ways of course, but if you want to look at say a core difference between Reagan's America and Gorbachev Soviet Union, it would be the former offered all people the option to succeed, while the later all but guaranteed success for a chosen few and put it out of reach for the majority.

Get a fellowship. Assuming you're American, you should at least be able to get an NIH or NSF individual postdoctoral fellowship. Then use that as a bargaining tactic to get a bigger salary (at least a few grand) since you're be "free" otherwise.

Not necessarily. However, to avoid discrimination lawsuits against particular religions (Jews or Christians vs Muslims), instead. give them a double shot of their choice (bourbon, rye, scotch, gin, vodka, tequila, slivovitz).
If they don't choose to drink, stop there, and say: we don't see a good fit with our workforce, or some-such.
If they do, then hand them 3 arrows, and a longbow.
If they can hit a man-sized target (that you tell them is named Mohammed), at 220 yards, they are the best of the best, and they're in.
If they try, but can't hit the target, maybe they can go to the guys you know just down the road.

I'd rather learn a new technique and/or system and enhance my current skill set rather than do something completely different, but I'm not limiting myself just yet. Given the conditions of the job market, I'm keeping myself as flexible as possible.
And yes, I'm American through-and-through, so I'll look into your suggestion. I always have the military as an option if nothing "jumps out at me" post-doc or fellowship wise. I'm young and don't plan on starting a family, so I have the benefit of maximum flexibility on this.

The front of those specs is functional, unobtrusive and strong.
But no one should ever wear thick side-pieces. I have a pair of Italian sunglass frames from the early 80's (they went with an Alfa I had...)
With very dark lenses, they are entertaining -- qua sunglasses -- because you get the optical equivalent of noise-cancelling earphones. They just shut everything out, all the nasty bright goes away, and you're in your quiet safe place. Do NOT try working (or driving) in that status.
Your peripheral vision is completely blocked. Anyone can sneak up on you. You can't see who's trying to pass; your blind spot is total. Not even safe for walking down a hall. And that's the image the hipster doofus projects as he sports them: too coo fo skoo, take me I'm yours.
Spectacle style is all well and good, after you establish your range of vision. You'll never see me wearing those. Because I'm sneaking up on you.

Salon: Donald Trump Gave $32K to Rendell
Donald Trump has come under fire for his large donations to Democrats, including Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Senator Chuck Schumer, and Congressman Charlie Rangel. He gave to Dems, Trump has said, in races where Republicans have no chance.
Well SalonÂ’s Steve Kornacki has poked a hole in that argument, noting that Trump donated $27,000 to PennsylvaniaÂ’s own Ed Rendell during his 2002 campaign for Governor well before Rendell was certain to win, and $5,000 in 2003 after he became Governor.
You should read the entire piece.
To sum it up, Kornacki suggests (probably accurately) that it was a business decision for Trump. Rendell was the pro-casino candidate, and Trump had an interest in competing for some of PAÂ’s gaming licenses (he was later shut out).
Nonetheless, itÂ’s another name in a long list that Trump will need to live down.

My mother had a friend (she'd been his babysitter) who did well at state college, went into the Army "Chemical Corps" for a couple terms, and later retired grandiloquently from Lilly. While he was at Fort Meade doing whatever they were doing in 1962 (we didn't ask), he got married. The bride's family were teetotallers recovering alcoholics did not drink, so the reception was expected to be tiresome. But each of the chemical engineer's lab buddies cuffed one test tube of 200-proof lab alcohol into the punchbowl. It was the first drunken brawl I'd ever seen up close.

No doubt. And the Egyptians probably don't keep up on tank maintenance well either.
First time I saw an M1A1 tank up close was during my first year of Army ROTC. I had heard of these wonderful machines and seen them operate in some news clips, but I never fully appreciated their glory until then (and it was too bad they didn't fire a round for us). What was really impressive was hearing the stories about their service in the First Gulf War, that the Iraqis would fire RPGs at the tanks but all the rockets would do is stick out of the tank chassis like porcupine quills, not affecting the service of the tank at all.

Operating armor in the desert (sand) requires quite a bit of preventive maintenance. Air filters need to be cleaned religiously, etc. I remember seeing quite a bit about this prior to the Gulf War in '91. And some alleged expert critiquing the M1 operating in the desert. How'd that turn out?
I also wonder about the discipline of the present and future Egyptian Army, especially as it appears that the MB will gain the upper hand after "elections" this September. Will the US begin to withdraw military advisors and training if such a thing takes place?

That movie (Outbreak) is my impetus in considering the military as a career. In hindsight, several aspects of the movie were ridiculous (the lab tech getting infected because he reached inside a spinning centrifuge - there are safety locks against that, the dumbass punk kid, one monkey providing enough anti-serum for an entire town, Donald Sutherland's somewhat over-the-top villainy), but I still like watching Overbreak. 50K? Wow.
Yeah, I say anything over a marathon is crazy! The prevailing wisdom is that since it's all on trail, people don't get as beat up as they do running a marathon on pavement. I say baloney! Although, you do run slower because you're on trail, but it's more time on your feet!

Currently 80 degrees in Houston, 75% humidititty. Like walking outside into a high traffic community shower room. That temp and humidititty reverse by 6 am.
Big break tomorrow night with a 54 degree low, 20 degrees cooler than what we've been having the last 2 weeks or so.
No significant rain predicted for next 10 days. Extremely dry conditions.

We have the honey end pretty well covered (shouldn't this be a weekend contest post, anyway?) I'm concerned with finding a relevant, politically appropriate approach to the Badger part. Some Wisconsin thing?

Hate that movie. The stereotypical villain wearing Special Forces tabs....the military as villain in general (all to preserve their "weapon") etc. The near instantaneous healing of an advanced case of Ebola (your liver is turned to pudding, you're *this* close to death from exsanguination, but a single injection of serum will heal all the damage and rebuild your organs?).
But the worst is Cuba Gooding calling superior officers "sirs" which is not only incorrect, but it sounds stupid. The correct form of address for multiple superior officers is "gentlemen", or "ladies" as the situation warrants. That always nagged at me.

No argument from me. But call it nostalgia or denial or whatever, but I still like Outbreak, and it's military bashing wasn't as widespread as in other films - Donald Sutherland likes depicting the military as evil (I didn't know until later that DS was involved in a Vietnam anti-war play called "Fuck the Army"). I didn't catch DS's character was wearing Special Forces tabs, although I'm not surprised.
But even when I watched it as a teenager, I realized that I wouldn't care if we were performing offensive biological weapons research despite the treaty we signed. Why should the Russians or the Chi-Coms have all the fun? Hell, I'll bet the Chinese have at least a dozen facilities where they work on all kinds of nasty bugs. Biological weapons aren't called the "poor man's WMD" for nothing, and we're probably funding such research.

I lived through the previous era of lowered drinking age. Too many totally fucked up, wasted, blitzed teens driving. Including myself. God piloted me home safely on many an occasion.
Today's enhanced DWI/DUI laws are way more severe than they were back in the day, thanks to MADD, thanks to too many people dying at the hands of young drunks back in the day. Lower the drinking age and many more kids are gonna screw up and get nailed for DWI/DUI. Convictions can and do lead to loss of employment opportunities.
The cause-effect gene seems not to fully activate until early 20s. Thus young males jumping off roofs of hotels or upper balconies attempting to land in the hotel pool, but not quite getting the physics worked out accurately. Young ladies making very bad judgement calls (e.g. that blondie down in Aruba who's body has yet to be found)
We don't need more of this that will result from lowering the drinking age.

Here's a little biological weapons fun fact. During the 80's, until the reign of the "reformer" Gorbachev, the USSR developed a way to preserve Ebola virus if it was deployed on the battlefield (essentially, they lamented the virus thus extending its lifetime) and they also developed special munitions to spread smallpox virus in major population centers should a war have broken out between us and them.

All I got to say is that somebody mentioned running, and it reminded me of "W"s news item today. I was hit & miss on that guy, on an issue-by-issue basis, but it was just so great to see even a former president act with such class and perfect grace.
The new guy is such a self-promoting child, and a bully. In speeches to the nation, he sounds like the psycho school master, sternly telling you stuff, making crazy assertions, and demanding things, while you sit helpless to do much of anything about it. In speeches to a smaller crowd of his cronies, he comes off more like a snarky stand-up comedian.
You know, in an energy speech I saw the new guy make, I literally kept thinking "25th Amendment". It was this weird mixture of facts (including many I was surprised he admitted to), with conclusions that didn't come close to following from the premises he set down. He sounded like a crazy, confused old person. But now I'm ranting...

LincolnTF--did you enjoy "The Devil In White City"? I really like that author, Erik Larson. He lives in Seattle. Another really good book he wrote was "Isaac's Storm" about the Galveston Hurricane that eradicated practically an entire town. It was really good.
I just went back and read over the comments. Yeah, it sucks that Mumia gets a new sentencing hearing. Fun fact: My parents used to volunteer at a rescue mission in Philly. Mumia was in my dad's Sunday school class (til he dropped out to form the Black Panthers). He was Wesley Cook back then. My dad said he was really smart and articulate (didn't mention if he was clean and bright, though). My dad always thought he was going to be the one kid that was going to get out of the hood and make it big. I guess my dad was kind of right.
My dad took all the high school kids to Atlantic City (B.C.--before casinos) for a day at the beach. I was absolutely stunned. I was like 6 years old and couldn't believe that these teenaged kids had never seen the ocean before or been to a beach (something I took for granted, we went almost every summer). We also had them all over for a BBQ at our house. They thought we lived in the country (we lived in the suburbs) and that we were rich because we had a big house. I was shocked (because they always dressed better than I did!)

I prefer Twizzlers. I think they have better flavor and texture. Eating red vines is almost impossible if they aren't fresh. Then again, I grew up on the East coast, and we didn't have red vines. So maybe it's an aquired taste. (I didn't see them til I moved out here.)

predictions for great public health achievements in the next hundred years.
Predict a thinner population that cannot afford to eat...least if the socialist/commies stay in power..
Shorter life expectancies as we live "greener" with leaner carbon footprints (no more combustion engines, no more oil, coal or hydropower), etc.
The big trend (at a lot of the hospitals in my area) is minimally invasive surgery (so in theory, quicker healing and recovery times, less risk of infection). People are able to get back to activities of daily living (like work) more quickly. Our main campus has 3 robots and one of the other satellite hospitals is getting one. The thought is that in the future, surgery will be able to be done remotely (surgeon controlling the robot is not present, but at another location) which will work well for people in rural/isolated areas. With the advent of Obamacare, I can forsee those procedures no longer being done by surgeons, but by teenaged boys with mad gaming skilz. We're talking increased axcess and less expense. Win/Win!

The first one came out in 2004 - that's a straight-up RTS, except instead of having individual units, you command squads. There were several expansion packs, Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm.
Dawn of War 2 is still an RTS, but it also has some RPG elements (as The Dude explained the other night).

I know this was discussed earlier today, but I didn't realize that circumcision status was one of the items listed on the questionnaire for the new passport application.
From The Blaze:
Who was present when you were born? Can you remember every address youÂ’ve ever had? How about every place youÂ’ve ever worked? Were you circumcised?
You can go there to see the form. Oh, and if you wanted to protest or comment on anything on it, you had to do so by this past Monday.

Was posting from my phone - it takes too long to type out the url on that thing.
Actually, the beads are made by melting glass rods over a torch onto a hand-spun mandrel. We clean out the holes with a drill - but I don't have the bits for that yet. Sometime... I'm actually a little excited 'cause I just got a whole bunch of glass delivered for Rum's gift.
I'm actually working on the site right now to add in some more galleries and a menu. Hoping to get it up this week.

so the glass rods are colored? your using like a regular shop acetylene torch or does it have to be hotter? sounds kinda fun except for the heat aspect..

Yep. Hmm... I think you can use a regular torch for the soft glass... propane for the HotHeads, I believe. If you use a Minor, I believe you use propane and oxygen. Or natural gas and oxygen. Either type goes. Have to have proper ventilation.
It's very fun and kind of relaxing. I did get a nice burn to remind me to wear long sleeves!
Here's a video of someone working soft glass. (that's a Minor torch)
Borosilicate takes a hotter flame, if I remember correctly. I've only been doing this for maybe a month... and only in soft glass, so I have a lot of lapse in knowledge.

It looks like it is,, we have lots of crafty peeps and glass blowers around here but I had never seen the melting glass craft.. good for you its good YOU time and a chance to be creative.. (URL) ya I clicked on it and wouldn't connect but thought you were working on it
Posted by: beanervt at April 26, 2011 11:33 PM (KZLoo)
While the translucent ones on your site are my favorite I could see the caricature type being good sellers.. they are the cute..
Posted by: beanervt at April 26, 2011 11:42 PM (KZLoo)
Yep! It's also something crafty I can do with my mom 'cause she enjoys it a lot more than ceramics. The biggest difference is it's easier to set up/clean up and get into making some beads than throwing pots (messier and lot more down time). Someday... I'll merge the two into a real home studio.
I really wanted the .com extension, but someone's sitting on it, as usual. So I went with .net, and always try to type .com anyway. Here, I can't see it in the URL box... so of course I assumed that it was the correct extension. Wrong computer, d'oh.
I am still in such awe at glassblowers. Cannot comprehend it yet, but it's so fascinating to watch.

Yes to me any of that fire stuff, blacksmiths, iron sculpting, glass, is pretty intense... most of them around here are of the leftarded variety so it's hard for me to appreciate what goes into the craft.. I was around a working smithy shop for a few years and watched.. lot of work rewarding results.

The bumpy ones? I love making the bumpy ones and the raised designs (my favorite so far is the blue and white squarish bead...). It's a textural and bright colors thing. And they can be so alienoid too. I love making the flowers, as well. Actually, I like it all. Ha.
Right now, I'm working on shape - getting the ends right. Back to simple beads and then I'll try making the cylinder beads again later.
I never know what to do with the transparent colors - other than as encasements and air bubbles. It's easier to see how the opaques will look. But the transparents can be so beautiful - I really want to play with them some more and find inspiration from the really talented artists out there.
I love this lady's work. Whimsical and the patterns she uses are fantastic.

Yeah... I've found that the lefty artists are the most vocal. If there are conservatives around, they don't show it. I go into any website, class, or craft assuming that everyone else is a liberal. So far, no one talks politics and all is well.
Metalworking is fascinating as well - I haven't gotten to see any of that yet, but I would love to sit in on a sculpting class if I could find one. Just to watch. Amazing.

The bumpy ones?
I could foresee huge profits from the "Moron horde" for the right bumpy ones... just kidding but that was the caricature type along with the square green bot type? and cyl.. I also knew a guy who made oddles of money as a marine wielder then quit and became a metal sculptor.. he was really good blending metals and creating out of junk.. he did pretty well at that and left VT..
Posted by: beanervt at April 27, 2011 12:21 AM (KZLoo)
(The little square green bead with bumps is really, really tiny. Like the size of a pinky fingernail. I hate the bumps on it, though. Too sharp.)
I also knew a guy who made oddles of money as a marine wielder then quit and became a metal sculptor.. he was really good blending metals and creating out of junk.. he did pretty well at that and left VT..
That's awesome. I love hearing stories like that. Somehow, it makes it better knowing that someone came out of a job like welding with an artistic career.
I'm signing off, so have a good night, all!
