Happy Thanksgiving All!

Classic Thanksgiving Clip: The Great WKRP Turkey Drop
You can watch the entire episode here. And did you know that this was based on an actual tradition?

The Politics of Thanksgiving
It turns out that the popularity of Thanksgiving varies by party and region. Surprisingly the northeast is much more lukewarm towards Turkey-Day than the south and midwest. Oh and don't forget to celebrate Republican Thanksgiving next thursday.

Even on the holidays there are partisan divides. In 1939, Franklin Delano Roosevelt tried to move Thanksgiving up a week so his buddy, Lew Hahn and MacyÂ’s would have a longer Christmas shopping season. Thus began a five-year war between the Republican Thanksgiving (the last Thursday in November) and the Franksgiving (a week earlier). A compromise was reached: The fourth Thursday in November.

Poopstock Live

Occupy Wall Street plans to release an album to benefit the movement. Already far left 1%Â’ers Jackson Browne, Third Eye Blind, Crosby & Nash, Devo, Lucinda Williams have agreed to participate on the album. The homeless drummers from Zuccotti Park will also be included on the album.

Oh, and 1%er Michael Moore is going to sing on the album, too!

Where will the money all go? Who knows, but everyone will get to feel smug while they're recording it.

An Etiquette Guide To Thanksgiving
Okay it's probably too late for this but there's always next year.

Kobayashi Sets New Turkey-Eating Record
He ate 7.5lbs of turkey in 10 minutes.

"He didn't just beat the existing world record -- he annihilated it," Rollman told HuffPost Weird News. "Never in my life have witnessed food disappear like that. The man is true culinary Houdini. It was a true honor to be so close to such a legend as he showed off his skills."
But achieving the record wasn't easy. Kobayashi told observers afterwards that the turkey was dry and, therefore, harder to swallow, which Rollman says makes the fact he broke the previous record by two pounds even more incredible.

It's hard to belive hispanics don't poll as "strongly favorable" as everyone else.  Being in deep South Texas it seems everyone I ever talk to has giant Thanksgiving dinners.  So that's kind of a surprise.

And the WKRP episode is priceless. Far better than Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, which is kind of a sorry knock off of the Charlie Brown Christmas.

The only god he worships is the image he see's when gazing into a mirror. So if he referred to himself during that speech, he acknowledged a "god".

30 I don't comment much in the ONT, but I read them all. Putting one of these together is a hell of a lot of work, as I can attest to from my one stab at it when Maet was out. One of the unwritten rules at the HQ is "Thou shalt not miss posting an ONT aroundeth 10pm" and Maet (along with CDR_M and the subs) do a hell of a job pulling these together every day. Thanks, guys.

Well, the normal human body processes alcohol at about one once per hour. To significantly decrease the amount of oxegen in you brain, you must consume more than one ounce of alcohol per hour.

I hope this helped.

136 Evening all.

I saw the article on limes being considered a weapon in the UK; what will they think of next. I suppose I shouldn't tell anyone that I have a complete arsenal of lemons.

We have one lemon tree in the yard. When it is in a good mood, as it was this year, we get around 500-1000 lemons off of that one tree. Big ones.

I give them to everyone in sight, and still have a bunch left. Little did I know I was arming potential terrorists. Hey, Tea Partiers are into that sort of thing per the MBM -- need some lemons? I've tried selling them to a grocery store, a roadside stand etc. but no one wants large quantities of lemons. Yes, I have a large quantity of frozen lemon juice already thank you.

The damn tangerine tree puts out about 10-15 a year. Small ones.

You need to change the voter registration of the lemon tree to Democrat and get it a tent and a cardboard sign, and change the registration of the tangerine to Republican and tell it to produce or die. Soon, the lemon won't produce a damned thing except stink and the tangerine will become a contributing member of society.

175 172 152, Just about every gravy packet contains wheat starch or flour. Unless you make your own from scratch it's hard to find one that doesn't. I've also found that other starches and non wheat derived flours tend to clump more often and the consistency is never quite right. Of course when you have no choice due to the dietary restriction, that kind of puts a damper on being able to make gravy right, versus making something one can actually eat.

182 Oh gravy packets -- but if you actually cook a turkey or a beef roast in a way to get some pan drippings you don't need no stinking packet, just mix some cold water and corn starch and stir that into the drippings in the bottom of the roaster to make real tasty gravy. But my sympathies on the celiacs, having to avoid flour and whatever else contains gluten would surely suck.

Love black powder weapons. I have 2 Colt Navies, one documented  by Colt, the other is from the period after the fire at Colt, where many records were destroyed. One I bought from a lady who was selling her late husband's stuff. It was encased in some kind of paper with a tarry substance that took me weeks to clean using kerosene. I took it to a gunsmith and found it was authentic, and it's a shooter.  Best part is I paid her $25 for it. When I found what I had, I went back and gave her a couple hundred more, out of guilt, mostly.

I make it with the pan drippings....actually, in the same pan that the meat was cooked in. Sprinkle in the flour and simmer until brown, stirring almost constantly, and then have a lot of hot water handy because when you add the water it will blow up into a big mushy mess. Just keep adding the water and stirring with a whisk until the mushy lumps break down. Then let it simmer to the consistency you desire. Of course add salt and lots of black pepper.

But having grown up eating mom's gravy made with corn starch and made the gravy myself that way and liking the results just fine I'll stick with easy peasy. Make a thin mixture of starch and cold water, pour into pan with drippings and stir until it thickens, also adding pepper and salt as needed (ham drippings need none)

203 It's hard to believe Hispanics don't poll as "strongly favorable" as everyone else.  Being in.....

Southern CA, all my Mexican (and one Salvadoran) friends have huge turkey dinners. And tamales, just for me. I am gonna miss those tamales when I move to Arkansas. (Although my Abuelita Rosa says she will mail them to me!)

Thanksgiving at my BILs was better than I expected...the food was meh, but we had a good visit.

The warm fuzzy feeling was ruined on the way home by the dead body we saw laying in the street a mile from our house, though. They were just throwing the tarp over him. Can't tell if it was a car accident, or something worse...there were a lot of cops and police tape around the strip mall nearby, but he was pretty far in to Beach Blvd.

lol, your resolve is admirable, if a bit foolhardy,

Israel isn't being too slow, it's just that they are considering the breadth of the task ahead of them if they have to shut down Iran's nuke program by themselves.  For starters, there are approximately 40 different facilities (that we know of - there could be a hell of a lot more that we don't know of) housing components of Iran nuclear program and these are all scattered across Iran.  Second, Israel's military is very professional and competent, but it simply isn't big enough for the challenge on it's own (which is why the US should attack Iran, but that's a story for another day).  Third, as Newt mentioned during the debate on Tuesday, any attack on Iran has to be accompanied by regime change.  If the mullahs aren't removed, all an attack will do is set back the Iranian program and ensure that Israel will be hit very, very hard in the aftermath of an Israeli attack.

The clock is fast ticking towards zero.

266 Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun? One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever. The sun also ariseth, and the sun goeth down, and hasteth to his place where he arose. The wind goeth toward the south, and turneth about unto the north; it whirleth about continually, and the wind returneth again according to his circuits. All the rivers run into the sea; yet the sea is not full; unto the place from whence the rivers come, thither they return again. All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun. Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us. There is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be
any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after.

But at the end of the same book --

There is a vanity which is done upon the earth; that there be just men, unto whom it happeneth according to the work of the wicked; again, there be wicked men, to whom it happeneth according to the work of the righteous: I said that this also is vanity.

Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and to be merry: for that shall abide with him of his labour the days of his life, which God giveth him under the sun.

When I applied mine heart to know wisdom, and to see the business that is done upon the earth (for also there is that neither day nor night seeth sleep with his eyes -- then I beheld all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun: because though a man labour to seek it out, yet he shall not find it; yea farther; though a wise man think to know it, yet shall he not be able to find it.

286 The biggest advantage of a PS3 is that it plays Blu-Ray discs, so it's much easier for married men to justify than the XBox - this doesn't have any effect on your decision, obviously, unless you want a blu-ray player.  Beyond the difference in media, they're basically the same.  Xbox has a larger online community, but the PS network is free as opposed to Microsoft's paid Xbox Live service.  Games are said to look slightly better on the Xbox, but the PS3 doesn't have the "red ring of death" issue.  Basically, it's a wash.  They're both excellent, and both will be replaced by next-gen technology within the next 1-2 years.  No matter which way you go, the giftee will have fun.

287 GGE, Thor and I saw a dead body on the way home...EMTs were just tossing the tarp over the poor guy. I was thinking it might have been some sort of homicide, because there were tons of cops ans lots of police tape everywhere, but I just checked the local paper online, and they said it was a pedestrian hit by a car. made me feel sad.

Mine is grey in a crinkly finish. If I had to do it all over again, I'd get a smooth finish so that poofed flour isn't such a bitch to clean off of it. When we rebuilt the kitchen in 2004, it got its own dedicated space off the counter in a lower cabinet, so the color isn't such a big deal.....although I could see where another 15-20 years is going to make it a problem to haul onto the counter and put back away.

There is a shiny grey finish, and a crinkly grey finish. In fact, the crinkly is only available in grey, IIRC.....but, like I said, is more of a pain than it's worth.

In the new kitchen (2004), the cabinets are natural ash, the granite's green, the appliances are stainless, and the backsplash is brownish-rocky-colored -- so very earth-toned and neutral.

Bomb crafting is kinda gay, yeah. They changed Altair's voice actor too which kind of annoyed me. Ezio can also now pull a parachute out of his ass too. yup Aurochs calls it "hadjification" i try to keep it out of public areas except as accent.

my kitchen and den are actually super tasteful and man-friendly. the kitchen has ivory cabinets and granite counters (special color with topaz veins, and garnet lookin spots) with honey onyx tiles as a backsplash and the floor of my whole house is lighter colored slate. the den attached has wood paneling and yes tho there might be an oriental carpet it is a very nice one and the colors are all earth tones and nothing makes the eyes bleed.

tho the tibetan and mongol furniture in my private areas are very colorful indeed.

Hmm, well being mostly metal, I found a lot of good tones with the Soldano amp model, then I shaped it with the eq. It works with a shitload of different songs, its my default setting.

I was asking because I used to do kitchens and baths. I ripped out alot of really old kitchens. One that came to mind was a wood cabinet, but it was in a color that was called oyster and blue. Basically oyster color frames and rails, but blue doors and drawrer heads. The oyster color was *gag*, but the blue was nice. It was a lacquer or enameled finish. Was actually quite an expensive kitchen for the time. It was from the very late 40's. Basically what would be a very upscale kitchen of the time. It was in beautiful condition.

Myself, I like that they aren't apologetic. They look an awful lot like a drill press because they've got about 90% of the same guts. Even the smaller ones, like the Artisan I've got, could break your arm if you stuck your hand through the paddle and kicked it into gear. Too much of what we have around is safety'd to death where it can't actually accomplish much. Kitchen-Aid mixers are what they are.

It frigging blew ass when it was more of an urban (read shithole) section, when it was parking on the street only, halfway down the block, on alternate days because of the street cleaner, for the pleasure of doing a kitchen on a second floor of a 2 family house that was maybe 18 feet wide with a cork screw of a set of back stairs. Probably a shure SM-57 if he's miking up a guitar amp, those are the workhorses. If worse comes to worse and the guitar port thing becomes like ball ( or boob) surgery you could just order the guitar port from musician's freind, or maybe Music 123. =====

It really depends on the purpose.  Practically everyone and his yellow dog uses the SM-58 for vocals.  And, gazzillions of guitar players use the SM-57 to mic their amps.

These are well made mics that are essentially unchanged in decades and very widely used.  There are other choices, but it is really hard to go wrong with these.

Well the 57 is for miking up the amp, and the 58 is for vocals, so if you want to cover all bases yeah why not.

Toys are fun and all, but presents shouldn't be a quid-pro-quo. Some of them shouldn't fit on a scale to be weighed against others. Host a mystery day-trip or get some of his friends together for a tailgate party (that he wouldn't otherwise do). Break out of the mold.

have you seen him mic an amp?  I think you mentioned that he is not gigging anymore.  Is he doing a garage band thing?  Is there a studio setup he uses somewhere?  I think you also mentioned he likes to record and edit.  Has he got a good setup for that?

Depending on what you can tell us, I think we can target some suggestions for you.

Sure it can.  Every good bass part since Motown was written with the female sway in mind.  The good news is they are always attached so a guy can marvel at one for a while and then the other.  back and forth, forth and back.

However, I gotta admit, boobeh's have that bullseye thing going on, too.

Speak for yourself.

Movement attracts attention. There is a reason that "poetry in motion" is such a well-known phrase. But which parts go where is still an individual preference. When my "motion tracking sensors" lock on, a gal doesn't necessarily have to be walking backwards, forwards, upside-down, or sideways -- she just has to have it goin'-on (and I hope I'm wearing sunglasses and can lock down the neck-swivel).

We're talking Hypnotizing effect JC and unless you can come up with better evidence then I have which I will now reveal:

If teh butt is more hypnotizing then teh boobeh, why don't we run round the backside and stare instead of stare at the boobeh of every wimmenz we meet?? huh?? huh??

Posted by: beanervt at November 25, 2011 01:04 AM (KZLoo)

456 bean, when I was younger and trying to teach my geeky guy friends how to dance, I had really remarkable success with one guy who I was afraid was going to be hopeless. I was preening myself on how well I had done at getting him to keep time when he all of a sudden blurted out that he wasn't really keeping time on his own, he was just watching my boobs bounce and following along with that!!! Thanks, jc! Yes, I have seen him mic an amp. No more real gigs, a few social events....weddings, parties, etc fir friends and family. Yes, jams with friends. He has professional quality (albeit older by now) recording and editing stuff. I am not entirely sure if he meant he needed new mics for that or the live stuff, now that you mention it. Will it work for both?

Posted by: MissTammy at November 25, 2011 01:04 AM (SsG4J)

457 I see jc and beanervt have jumped in, so I'll have to double down.

Sometimes, you're taking all this motion in at once, and your attention actually gets up to a particular type of grin.....and it's just happy all over....

.....until you figure out that she's looking over your shoulder at someone 20 years younger in significantly better shape.

Posted by: MissTammy at November 25, 2011 05:04 AM (SsG4J)

===

Yes. the SM mics will work for both.  There are some mics that are made specifically for studio work that are different, but don't go in that direction unless you are absolutely certain that is what he wants.

The good news about the Shure SM mics is they are nearly bulletproof.  Schlepping gear around bangs it up eventually, and the Shure SM's will hold up to all reasonable forms of abuse for years and years.

As far as his old recording gear goes, if it was good quality for its time, it is probably still great and if he comfortable using it, he may not want to do the learning curve for something else anyway.

On the play around the house, and jams with friends front, there are some newer, lighter weight things that are surprisingly great.  I can't tell you how much I appreciate the smaller gear I now have over the bigger gear that just sits at home cuz I no longer want to tote it.

Sadly, the odd part of that story is not that he was doing it, but that he'd admit it. There is so much social pressure on men to deny that they enjoy looking at women -- which seems like a complete Darwinian black hole, where nothing survivable can escape......

Stranger, still, most women enjoy being looked at to one degree or another.

Posted by: MissTammy at November 25, 2011 01:47 AM (SsG4J)

486 OK, just to step outside in an editorial fashion....

MissTammy's got Thor. Vika ut sig's got somebody. I'm working on my third decade with my other half. I may be wrong, but I'm not really thinking that people are looking for a hook-up here. There are significant committed relationships.

That said, we can freely talk about the birds and the bees here. Maybe a wandering eye isn't going to drag me out of my relationship, but talking about how my eye might wander can help a fellow moron understand a friend's behavior a mite better. If I say that something might be better accompanied by pics, it's not that I'm actively seeking moron pr0n, it's a reminder that text may not encompass visual information efficiently.

It's possible to be gallantly flirtatious without being crass. We're among friends, and hurts get "excuse mes" and bumps get "oopses".......and we move on. If there is ever an AoS vendetta, then someone was on here by mistake beforehand.

I can well understand how stalking unpleasantly crosses the line of casual appreciation. I know that the great wide world has many places less civilized than AoS -- which is civil, despite any discussion of boobies or anything else, because of the regard that we have for each other.

So, when I'm talking about pictures from a moronette, it is for strictly intellectual reasons. That's my story and I'm sticking with it.
