Overnight Open Thread - Upgraded Version
— Maetenloch

Woohoo: English V3.31 Finally Released

Well I've been testing V.3.30 at work for a while now and so far I've been uber-plus-pleased with it. And the reviews for 3.31 all seem pretty positive too:

Just downloaded the beta version of English V3.31, and I have to say I am very excited about it. This is definitely going to be a feather in the cap of Anglophones everywhere, and way better than the notorious V2.99 release of French (or the 'deux point neufty-neuf' as it has become known). There's a ton of new features to talk about, so let me dive in right away with some toothsome details.

AG_English_V6_lrg.gif

New official features include 'parameterized clichés' AKA snowclones such as "X is the new Y", "A is B'ed by X and Y, but mostly Y", and the 'emphatic period':

Now, top punctuation boffins have come up with a solution that reintroduces the power of exclamation but has a built-in mechanism that defeats attempts at repeated-stop hyperbole. Here is the emphatic period in action:

It. Was. Julie.

As well as dynamic typing:
In V3.31 the ongoing reengineering of English from a stodgy, safe statically-typed language to a modern, dependency-subcutaneously-injected dynamically-typed language continues apace. Nouns can be freely and implicitly cast to verbs; adjectives take on the labour of adverbs at the drop of a -ly. Who, in 2011, is so ridiculous (sic) fuddy-duddy as to think differently? We all know to think different now.

However some features were removed such as the Oxford Comma which is now officially unofficial, deprecated and no longer recommended for new literary designs.

And support for British 'heritage' spelling and vocabulary ('Inglespeak') was rejected in this release so "Whan that Aprill, with his shoures soote the droghte of March hath perced to the roote..." still generates parse warnings.

Also 10 Commonly Misunderstood English Words
Eh. I'm betting all these 'wrong' meanings will be approved before EnglishCon 2025. How Old is the Earth? and Other Political Questions
It's funny how the media is normally incurious about how much candidates know about geology except when it's potentially a way to disqualify christian candidates.

On the one hand, I sort of agree that any educated adult should be able to answer this question or, at the very least, be able to offer competing answers. On the other hand, itÂ’s not really relevant except as a secular litmus test designed to exclude young earth creationists. Most Christians these days (and this is true historically as well) hold to a standard old earth view of creationism, i.e. the earth is the same age as the solar system at roughly 4.5 billion years old.
If you want to go down that road, IÂ’d be willing to bet money that Newt Gingrich would do better on a test of basic science knowledge than the President. Would that matter to progressives, i.e. would it shift any votes? I doubt it. This isnÂ’t about knowledge as much as it is about secular clannishness and bigotry.

What Happens If You Fire A Gun Underwater?

WRM: The War Against the Young
There's a slow moving war of plunder and fiscal enslavement against a whole segment of Americans but so far they haven't glommed onto it yet.

In America, too, blue social policy is gradually turning into an all out war against the young. Colleges build larger and more complex administrative-bureaucratic structures — and bill the kids through student loans. Unions sacrifice the wages and retirement benefits of new workers to protect the status of the old. At every level of government around the country, services are being slashed as government struggles with unfunded pensions. Medicare is a colossal inter-generational Ponzi scheme; there is simply no way that younger people will get the kind of Medicare that their tax dollars now provide to the elderly of today.

Your Worst Nightmare: UK Official Returns Home, Finds It Occupied by Gypsies
The house was trashed and they were wearing her clothes.

She said: ‘The women came to the door dressed in my clothes, they were sitting around my dining room table, drinking my wine out of my glasses. They even offered me a drink and told me they were from Romania. They said I was dead and my son had rented the house to them. I am very much alive, single and I don’t have a son.’

She secured a county court eviction order the next day and police removed the family. But she has been forced to stay with friends during repairs, and fears it will be weeks before she can return.
She said: ‘These people have just trashed 30 years of my life and thrown it into bin bags. It is soul-destroying.’

Yesterday the Daily Mail found the family in a four-bedroom house two streets away, owned by a doctor who bought it in March but delayed moving in to carry out repairs.

This being modern Britain odds are that they'll never face any punishment and will just keep moving from house to house.

96 There's a slow moving war of plunder and fiscal enslavement against a whole segment of Americans but so far they haven't glommed onto it yet.

The amusing thing is that if the young were actually getting an education in the government schools they'd still be rioting...but over too much spending, not too little.

What's your chosen profession?

Foolishly, manufacturing.

I drove a small box truck as a vendor for 13 years, the store I worked at closed up with 7 days notice. I was given a week with no time off or $$, to relocate to a different store. Moved Heaven and Earth to do so. Turned out that decision = EPIC FAIL since my new "sales" manager was unclear on the concept and my commission based pay turned into less than $7 per hour over my 13 hr days.

Moved back, discovered I am damn good at making things whilst temping in the metals manufacturing world. Even got a temporary promotion to a position not normally granted to a temp I kicked so much ass.

But I have a few leads and a test for a job that I really want, so I'm hopeful. And trying that Oprah-esq "visualization" of what I want to make it come true trick. And Drinking.

How can it be lazy? You have to muddle fresh mint for a mojito.

Imbibe magazine has a good recipe, except that you should buy your cinchona bark in chunks instead of powder so you don't have to do all that stupid filtering.

The most heavily contaminated spot was in the town of Okuma about two miles southwest of the plant, where someone living for a year would be exposed to 508.1 millisieverts of radiation — far above the level of 20 millesieverts per year that the government considers safe.

Arborists are mainly creations of liberal planers. They are mainly paid to tell you how close you can dig to a tree which is just outside the dripline like it always was and always will be. If a branch fell off your tree then you need to cut it back to the trunk and go about your business.

If you are worried about disease call an arborist. If a branch fell off call someone with a chain saw.

Regarding the pistol shooting under water: I wouldn't be a bit surprised if the barrel is structurally damaged at this point. A Pirate would create a list of demands and deliver it to the landlord.

Do not offer examples of what would happen should he fail to meet them. Expect them to be met.

However, it is permissible to put on a display of cannon fire, in his general direction. Pirates often find this to be quite effective.

As to renting. First look at the lease. There may be a clause about repairs as to notification.

You can then kindly reference the lease back to the landlord and ask whether they will do them or if they would be willing to have you do them for reduction. But whatever you do, please get it in writing.

Careful with calling the insurance agent about the tree. If you advise them of pending damage, you are effectively communicating constructive notice and the responsibility rests with the homeowner to protect property.

Now Chemjeff, if the tree has fallen onto the house or a portion of it has, and caused damage, typically most policies contain coverage for debris removal.

That's a fair assessment.  But remember that Egypt has been spoiling for a fight against Israel ever since Israel came back as a literal state.  While Nasser failed miserably to antagonist/destroy Israel at least 2 times, he is lauded as a hero while the man who made a peace (albeit a cold peace) with Israel, Sadat, (who also got back the Sinai from Israel) is seen as a weakling - his death wasn't even that lamented by the Egyptian populace.

I had 10 trees removed from yard in WI. Removed, hauled away and stump ground. $400 cash. The biggest was around 30inch Dia. the smallest 6.

That is insanely cheap.

Chemjeff and Ben,

What is the pitch of the roof? Is it gable, hip or mansard? How high up is the soffit?

And what kind of shingles are we talking about. More than likely asphalt or what those from certainteed would call, "composition."

See, it all comes back to the class action Certainteed shingle lawsuit.

We got off on a tanget about that a couple months ago.

Hey, Breitbart if you are reading the comments, the Certainteed class action lawsuit is our achilles heel.

276 Branches or not if the tree fell and caused damage even minor they should come and remove the branches and also allocate costs to remove the tree.

hmm do you think I should let my insurance agent know?  I guess it wouldn't hurt to chat with him tomorrow morning as the tree guy is getting set up, or something

Make sure the tree is on your property.

oh yeah, tree is on my property

Do you have a ladder? Can you just go up there and take them off yourself?

no big ladder, but even if I did - the branches are BIG, and one of them is trapped in the crook where the chimney meets the roof, so I can't even reach that one

There are probably several landscaping outfits running around in trucks. Stop and talk to a couple. Make a deal for cash.

well, we had the "guy with truck making cash deals" discussion last night, that idea was kinda nixed

hmm. Yeah, you should probably contact your insurance company. If it is as big as you say and it landed in the crook where the chimney meets the roof then there is a decent chance it fucked up your flashing.

If it did then that could let water into your house when it rains. When the guy comes to take it off your roof, ask him to check out your flashing to see if it was damaged.

So the Arab Spring which Obama has helped spawn has essentially destabilized the middle east, thus providing a pathway for extremists to foment aggression through new channels amidst a populist uprising that is sympathetic with mono-thesistic muslim nationalism and now NATO in a unilateral campaign has led a proxy war under Obama providing armed rebels with caches of weapons to wreak further destabilization in the region in an area that is a stones throw away from Italy and Greece, which are economically unstable as is the entire world.

So,

I sit another night under my orange tree in the red/purple glow of a summer so-cal sunset. I am a man who up til 3 years ago thought that no matter what life threw at me, I had the "where-with-all" to meet and over-come the adversity and be better for it. Now, I find myself in a position of doubt looking to 2012.

I ask you M&M's this, and it is a question that is not for myself only, but quite probably a question that I believe you have ALL asked yourselves in recent days or weeks.

The question is..."Who is the best choice to lead America out of this disaster that is the Obama White House? And,  "Who will dismantle this Fed Monster of a Czar Co-Op that has been running this country for the last 3 years by fiat?

I will await your thoughts while I return to the orange tree and guzzle merlot.

I am not worried about Israel those people don't fuck around. The first time they beat back the Arabs with a hodge podge of weapon most of us would be afraid to shoot and 15 different kinds of ammunition. They have only become stronger while their foes are fighting among themselves.

Oh and did I mention they have nukes now?

CJ. the third one leaves for college on Sunday - we're sure gonna miss having someone around to go run errands for us!  :-)

Teenagers are hard, but - for girls, anyway - they hit 18/19, and they turn into the most delightful people.  That's the only thing that kept us from killing the middle two during their adolescence; DD#1 had already turned the corner, so we knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel!

Now we're looking forward to the day when all of them have kids so that we can laugh at them the same way that our parents have been laughing at us.....

I don't know if you are serious or just joking but this is a bona fide period of grace to restore faith.

Look, if we knew everything it would obviate the need for faith which is believing but not seeing in the simplest of terms.

Many will mock prayer and that it seems trivial and antiquated however, it is very powerful.

And while I don't know if Richard is serious or not, anyone reading this, who is overwhelmed, prayer works wonders.

We are in the midst of providential times for which looking outward is as much called for as looking inward for strength that which we know exists through believing but not seeing.

This my friend is a bona fide grace period for what must come will --- the path through it can be reinforced through faith; faith in the ultimate arbiter of peace, justice and everlasting.

We will be tested for sure.

I am scared shitless for the future of my country.  You couch your fear in a rather poetic way, which takes some of the sting out of harsh reality.  Monty's doom threads are not entertainment, they are ongoing evidence of a serious decline that will end in tears. Not sometime in the future, but around the corner.

I tear up whenever I have a discussion with many if not most of my "friends". They cannot see. They will not see.  More govt cheese, please.

I'm making a mental list of those who I will help and those I will not (assuming I'm not dead in the gutter) , as it will be coming down to precisely this.   You want to take my money for your benefit, using the govt as your personal thief,  you  remove yourself from my charitable purview.  And shortly, it is all anyone will have left-  private charity from those who might have anticipated the chaos and positioned accordingly.   Perhaps as it should be.

He thinks windmills are now powering a large portion of America, rather than a subsidized 2.8% portion.

It is very hard to sway his opinion or preconceived ideas even after he has looked up facts I present. I am beginning to despair that the level of misinformation is so pervasive that nothing can get through it.

Oh well, at least he detests JugEars so I'll take that away as a comfort.

Once Egypt shakes out, we will see what happens. The likeliest outcome is that the MB and other fundamentalist groups get elected, then change the laws ...

This will likely take a few years, since, while very many Egyptians really profess Islam, even strict Islam and Shari'a, having to ACTUALLY LIVE (grammar for effect) under Shari'a .... no, that was never the plan. But is the likeliest outcome, unless another strongman appears.

Will the Egyptian Army camel-up and try to roll into Israel? Having an M-1, or even a thousand, is not the same as being very good at USING that M-1, let alone a thousand. The problem is the Egyptian troops and Arab culture, and the Egyptian officers know this.

My guess is that some general, generals or colonels, and maybe a couple of bureaucrats, will have the foresight to try to form shock battalions of MB and other fundamentalist 'martyrs', to lead any assault against Israel. If they succeed, then Egypt wins; if they are slaughtered, then Egypt is freed from the 13th plague.

I'm not so optimistic.  A slaughter, or humiliating defeat, has never stopped it before.  Look at Iran and what happened to them in the Iran-Iraq War, right when the mullahs took over.  That was a total disaster, in every way.  Didn't matter.

I will say one thing, whoever ends up running Egypt will be very anti-Israel and will be routinely violating the Camp David Accords.  Egyptian public opinion shows that that is how things are going to go, no matter what.  Just the fact that Israel is on record having begged the Egyptian government to move troops into Sinai (contrary to the Accords) will raise its ugly head in the future, I'm sure.

I always thought that giving back Sinai was incredibly stupid.  The Syrian border has been quieter than the Sinai border, and now the situation is far worse.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at August 23, 2011 12:44 AM (F5tJy)

I'mnot particularly optimistic either, but look at the alternatives. The 1980's Iran-Iraq War ended as effectively a stalemate.  Iran took titanic losses, and their government stayed in power.

But a lot of people have learned from the Iran-Iraq War, and very many of them are in the ME. Could a mullah or 10 incite the Iranians to attac Iraq, Turkey, Pakistan or one of the Central Asian 'stans? They would need serious provocation to succeed.

The Eyptians, and others are not unaware of the Iranian experience. I expect to see a lot of pushback against the MB by "others" (to be named ... soon I think), who will not allow the MB to use religion as their reserved weapon.

I think alAzhar U. will rule against the MB; specifically, they will issues fatwas against anone who tries to declare the "others" as un-Islamic, heretical, ... this will provide a great deal of un-assailable legitimacy to the "others", and force the MB to play ... nicer ... or something.

Perhaps we will see Mecca get involved, and I suspect against the MB, as the Saudis know which side of the pita has the hummus on it.  But the Saudis are hated by just about everyone, andit is only money from oil, spent on mercenaries, that keeps them in power.  They could disappear soon, with little explanation.

But there are many factions, and I expect to see much maneuvering.  Then I expect to see blood.

435 I always thought that giving back Sinai was incredibly stupid.

Posted by: progressoverpeace at August 23, 2011 12:50 AM (F5tJy)

Giving back the Sinai was not a great choice, but it seems necesary from an historical and from a military point of view.  Giving it back made Israel look good (even though this has been forgotten), and it bought Israel 30 or so years of peace. I think this 30 years cost less than if Israel had to maintain a few divisions there.

But there is a very good chance that Israel will have to retake the Sinai, and I think very soon.  But this time, they will have a legitimate reason for keeping it; like the Golan Heights, peace prevails only when Israel controls the area.

If this happens, I expect to see the Gaza strip walled off from Israel, and the West Bank will become much more Israeli. I think there will be no Palestinian "issue", at least not an internal one, ever again. Palestinians will only be in Egypt and Jordan.

Yep.  But, even more importantly, Israel has to learn that you cannot give back land won in war from arabs without extracting a very, very high price (and a real asset, not words and shit).  Otherwise, the arabs have no respect for you and are just egged on, in their demented thinking.

I don't see this happening.  Shamir really screwed the pooch when he released Jordan and Egypt from the Palis.  That was incredibly idiotic.  At least, Egypt and Jordan had things to lose.  "Negotiating" with the Palestinians is a total joke.  They have nothing to offer (other than promises to try and act civilized, which they seem incapable of doing, anyway).  Every time someone speaks about Israeli-Palestinian negotiations, I ask them what the Palis have to negotiate with.  It's like trying to haggle with a guy who's buying your car with monopoly money that you give him, and he's still being a prick about the price.

442 Hey for those of you contemplating a movie house visit to see Rise of the Apes, here is the director's 'vision':

Here’s Rupert Wyatt, director of the blockbuster movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes in a recent interview: “(The script) had become very different and much more exciting to me. It became less a story of domesticization of a pet and more about an uprising and a Che Guevara story.”

You score with your analysis of the Palestinians. But at some point, the Israelis have to make a decision: how much is enough? At some point, the Israelis, even the Leftist ones will have to decide to either cut out the cancer, or die temselves.

Remember the Egyptian cleric who saw nothing wrong with buying and selling non-muslims (clip at HA, IIRC, probably MM, Jawa Report, MEMRI, and maybe even here), and when he desired a girl, simply went to the maket and bought one? This, ultimately, is what the Israelis face, if they lose, and, by extension, all of the rest of us or our descendants, eventually.

I expect to see the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, the part that is under current dispute, soon become very small. There will be no roads linking the two.

I've had red and black Johnnie, never blue.  I believe I had a glass of a Dalwhennie but it has been so long I can't recall for sure.  I occassionally spring for a $40-$60 bottle of scotch.  I am too tight to go $100 plus for it.  I did like the single malt Glen Farclas.  It took about a minute to go thru the different nuanced flavors and it lingered on the pallet for up to 3 minutes.  Good stuff.

495 I am really scared for the future of America. I tried to read most of the comments on the poll thread and here to find out what other conservatives are thinking of. Now I want to fucking cry. Almost all of the political comments have to do with foreign policy and wars. Israel, Egypt, Syria, Libya. I look around and I see the destruction and the devastation that liberal policies are causing right now in America. And all I see is conservatives talking about Israel's borders............. I am beginning to think there is no hope for this country. The only electable candidate out there who is sufficiently conservative to roll back entitlements is derided as "nuts" by conservatives - not by liberals or centrists, but by conservatives. Why? The honest answer is because you don't agree with his foreign policy stance. Neither do I but I do recognize that the liberal disease that is killing America has nothing to do with foreign policy. So I don't care about that. When did aggressive interventionist foreign policy became a sine qua non condition for the GOP nominee? In fact we don't have any money to be having an aggressive interventionist foreign policy right now, because we are fucking BROKE. So this should be the least of the concerns in the mind of a conservative. I have always supported Israel's right to exist, -even though 99% of Jews would go for Obama against the GOP- but this obsession with Israel and the foreign policy/war fetish that conservatives have here are definitely part of what is wrong with the GOP. Honestly folks, who cares? Why do you want to be more Jewish than the Jews? If the Jews want to vote for Obama, why should I care more about what happens to Israel than them? We have real problems here in America. I can't believe I never saw it before but I think Ron Paul is right. If America is to be saved, we have to go back to real conservatism.

I want to see a full-blown, 2000 word rant from Ace about this student loan issue.  Why is it that minorities feel free to demand special accomodations from the government because their beliefs are not compatible with the laws of the land?  I'd say I was waiting for some paleo-pagans to demand government permission to carry out human sacrifice like the Druids of old, except I'm afraid that they'd actually get it (well, in Europe at least).  Do these governments have no sense of culture, of respecting the will of the majority?  When you allow a minority to bluster and threaten and have their way, all you do is further rationalize the use of actual violence to achieve their goals if you frustrate their demands in the future.  Does anyone in Europe have a pair any more?  Maybe Merkel, since she told the PIIGS to drop dead a la Ford, but this is what our once prized ally Britain has sunk to?

Hmm, there's another topic that would be fun--revisiting Ford refusing to bail out New York.  Seems to me that NYC ended up doing just fine without having tons of federal funds thrown at it...

522 Ron Paul is just following the old Libertarian Party isolationist credo. They fought the Buckeleyite Right for years. Read "Radicals for Capitalism" for an amazing history of the Libertarian movement from Goldwater to now. It developed some strange isolationist strains as it fought within itself about the role of national defense. Basically, it relegated itself to permanent fringe status. Americans are not stupid about defense, just how to pay for it..

Posted by: TexasJew at August 22, 2011 11:41 PM (DB7UQ)

523 Robert I am not an antisemite. Don't you think this is exactly like when someone criticizes Obama the libs immediately start calling them racist? It is exactly the same.

Posted by: Daniel at August 22, 2011 11:42 PM (D4eQr)

524 Not to defend Ron Paul (shudder) but he is correct about the unconstitutionality of the Imperial Presidency we have now. He does want to return war powers to Congress, which is not really out of the realm of constitutional reality, outside of critical situations.

No, the fact that you implied that American foreign policy was under the direction of  the jooooos is what makes you an anti-semite.  That you imply the jooooos are some kind of fifth column is what makes you an anti-semite.

Trust me, you're not gonna martyr yourself here.

Posted by: Robert at August 22, 2011 11:52 PM (4ixH5)

529 buzzion I have researched Ron Paul's positions on almost everything, and I agree with all of them except foreign policy. When I said I don't know a lot about him, it's because I assume the people here must know something I don't know about him, given that he generates so much antipathy.

Posted by: Daniel at August 22, 2011 11:55 PM (D4eQr)

530 Posted by: Daniel at August 23, 2011 03:55 AM (D4eQr) I never called you an antisemite. I never do that shit here on Ace. But Ron Paul has had some rather unsavory associations for some reason. The problem is the Libertarians psychotic need to blame the Pubbies as much or more than the Democrats on a million issues. They really suck on national defense issues, and that has destroyed their effectiveness. The weird point about those assholes is that they don't care. I am a fiscal conservative, national defense semi-hawk and social libertarian - sort of a common position these days.

Except you already revealed what you meant by "foreign policy" in your first comment.  Its all about the Jooos and how just because Jews in the US are liberals we shouldn't support Israel.  So sounds like you are just fine with Ron Paul's foreign policy.

Posted by: buzzion at August 23, 2011 12:05 AM (GULKT)

536 Thanks for your honest response TexasJew. i agree with you. Part of the reason I didn't consider Ron Paul as a serious candidate until now is because I hate how a lot of Ron Paul supporters would rail against Republicans foaming at the mouth and they wouldn't say anything against Democrats. I absolutely hate Ron Paul supporters. But Ron Paul himself is actually pretty good for everything except foreign policy. But I think if America is broke, foreign policy doesn't count much.
