Overnight Open Thread: Controversy!
— Dave in Texas

What's the big deal? She had legs. She knew how to use them.

iconic.jpg

Not seeing the problem here.

Don't you wish you had a skirt? Those hot pants.

But Chicago Tribune columnist Mary Schmich gave the sculpture a scathing review. She called it "as tawdry as a peep show," and complained about the men walking by who were seen "shooting photos of her crotch while one stuck out his tongue to mime a lick."

Oh hello. People do that shit at the giant ball of twine in Cawker City all the time Mary. Lighten up for once in your life.

(story via rdbrewer)

3 days early, but this is my gig tonight. James Doohan, RIP. Ace wrote Elegy for a Chief Engineer and it's still on my all time AoS funnay list.

Doohan was an officer in the Royal Canadian Artillery, a veteran of D-Day. Shot two German snipers, and was wounded by friendly fire, 6 machine gun bullets, one of which banged off of a cigarette case and another that took a finger. Stunt hands on the transporter controls in Star Trek. March 3, 1920 – July 20, 2005.

scotty_toast.jpg

It ain't Tranya or Romulan ale, but it doesn't suck either.

Hope you knuckleheads are having a great Sunday evening. I'm exhausted with this thing, and appreciating Maet's work a lot more than I did!

40 On to silly "news."  Yesterday I went to this Best of the Eagles concert at Deer Valley - some cover band with the Utah Symphony.  Anyway, I was expecting to hate it, but I actually enjoyed it.  I confess that I'd forgotten how many nice, vaguely Country Western, romantic ballads the Eagles did.  And the front man for the cover group really was a terrific showman.  He'd toured for a bit with Kansas back in the day.

Of course, it was creepy seeing all the 50-something year old former hippy chicks flaunting their (most definitely unflauntworthy) bodies near the stage.  But a good concert, nevertheless.

91 Hey chemjeff (and other sciencey types here), Reason has an article on climate change and confirmation bias with this mildly disturbing factoid:

The Pew Research Center conducted a 2009 survey comparing the political ideologies of scientists and the general public. Only 9 percent of scientists identified as conservative, 35 percent as moderate, and 52 percent as liberal, with 14 percent claiming to be very liberal. In contrast, the general public identifies as 37 percent conservative, 38 percent moderate, and 20 percent liberal, and 5 percent very liberal. Slicing the data another way, the survey finds that 81 percent of scientists lean Democrat whereas 52 percent of the general public does. Another telling division between the beliefs of the general public versus scientists is their responses to this statement: "When something is run by the government, it is usually inefficient and wasteful." Fifty-eight percent of scientists disagreed, whereas 57 percent of the public agreed with it.

This fiscon science guy sez that this survey sucks.

99 Besides reading and kids' stuff, I also had an interesting couple of hours fishing on our local river.

I about an hour and a half I caught, in this order:

a bluegill,
a rock bass (some of you may call these "red-eyes" ),
and finally a very nice 2 lb. smallmouth bass.

After the bass, I went home because I figured there was a certain symmetry to working my way up the food chain.

102 80 She was hospitalized with pneumonia and sepsis. She went into septic shock. She got over the pneumonia and the septic shock and was taken off the vent but after 2 days she was intubated again.Fluid was collecting in her lungs. Her heart wasn't great she had been experiencing arrythmia for some time and had heart failure several years ago.I think her heart simply gave out from all the effort.I didn't particularly care to find out for sure(ie no autopsy). Her cancer was quite bad, worse than she let on to me and my sister(or even my father). Her prognosis was pretty grim. Her cancer required aggressive treatment but the treatment led to her death.I doubt she would have survived further treatment. We hoped for a miracle, while she was alive we had hope but in retrospect it was somewhat delusional. She only lived 4 months after her own mother died at 94.She turned 69 April 3rd.Her mother never was inside a hospital(for herself) until she was 88.Such is life.

There's a reason why conservatism isn't the default political position, as Ace puts it, or the easy identity. It requires experience and thought.

I think Perry would make a fine conservative Pres. because he's attacking the things a conservatives needs to fight against now and here, unlike some candidates.

116 @99

My experience was that the more dependent scientists were on federal grant money, the more liberal they trended.  In my old department (biology) of 60 tenured/tenure-track faculty, I was the only conservative Republican.  There was another fellow who was a moderate Republican (fully closeted, though) and another guy who was a Libertarian.  That's it.  Virtually every faculty meeting and most faculty social occasions featured partisan (anti-Republican) bilge.

My first job interview (at UMKC) featured the old male department chair expounding on how no biggy the Monica Lewinsky stuff was to me and his untenured female assistant professor during the job interview dinner.  Needless to say, since I had concluded I didn't want the job, I eventually let him have it.

Anyway, in my experience research faculty who work with companies doing research contracts tended to be more moderate politically.  Engineers and certain physical scientists, especially.

Roosevelt, Jerry Brown—who is now California’s attorney general—all screwed up once, as I discovered when I myself failed. Both Pete Wilson, the former governor of California, and Antonio Villaraigosa, the current mayor of Los Angeles, took the bar four times; Benjamin Cardozo, one of the greatest justices of the Supreme Court, sat for it six times. Harold Ford Jr. still has not managed to pass the bar in Tennessee—a State in which the curve cannot be terribly dangerous—but that didn’t keep him out of Congress, though he’s been less lucky with the Senate."

Steevy,

I'm so sorry for your loss.  I lost my dad July 5, 1989 to a car accident.  He was 51 years old.  Not a day goes by that I don't think of him.  As Emily Dickinson once wrote, "time assuages."  You never do forget, though.  Sometimes the funniest things will make me cry even after all these years (hearing his favorite hymn at church, seeing his favorite ice cream in the freezer aisle of the grocery store), random weird things will stop you in your tracks.  At first it all feels like a bad dream, but eventually, the weight of the reality of the finality of death settles on you like a heavy, heavy pall.  I know it is hard, but you will make it through this very difficult time.  You are in my thoughts and prayers.

191 well it's been my experience that among all the sciences, the biology department tends to be the most libtard.  Sorry about that Y-not

That's true, because the research is expensive and does not lend itself to corporate research contracts.  So they need big federal research grants.  Chemists and physicists can accomplish more with shorter termed contracts and smaller grants.  Engineers, at least the ones I've known (quite a few), are encouraged to get a significant amount of their funding from corporate grants/contracts.

Peaches, there is nothing whatsoever wrong with thin women. It's just the idea that all women, regardless of biological makeup, must be thin to be considered attractive that bothers those of us who don't stand a chance of looking that way ever again.

In my twenties I won swimsuit contests. I my 30's my nickname was "Legs". In my 40's I'm lucky if anyone even glances my way a second time. That is not the problem of the young or the thin. That's my own issue with which to contend.

Be happy that you are young and thin and healthy.

Most of us would love to wear those labels.

well, my hypothesis is that the libtard-ness of the biology faculty revolves more around the evolution question - they feel it is their job to educate the stupid masses on the absolute certitude of evolution, so they get radicalized in their position - but what they don't realize is that their pro-evolution zealotry generates a lot of pushback, not because they think they're wrong per se, but just because of the professors' attitude and arrogance, and of course that pushback comes from conservative students (the libtard students just cheer them on).  That is my hypothesis anyhow.

I don't know if it's worse.  It's just different.  On the one hand, he went quickly (was alive and then pronounced dead shortly after his arrival to the hospital) so he didn't suffer long.  On the other hand, he was alone (driving home from work and someone in the opposing lane hit him head on).  You had to watch your mom suffer, but then you were also able to be with her.  I'm not sure if there is a "better" because either way it sucks.

He had walked me down the aisle in May, and he was gone less than 2 months later.  I felt even worse for my younger siblings who were going to be a freshman and a sophomore in college.  It's really sad because he didn't live to see any of his grandkids born (8 of them total), and my mom has never been the same since his passing.

OK, I'm signing off now, but I really would question that interpretation.  Evolution never comes up because, frankly, the evidence is so clear from genetic data that the organisms evolve there is nothing to debate.  It'd be like physicists sitting around fretting over getting people to accept carbon dating.

I think it has more to do with funding (biology is on average much more expensive and slower because you are dealing with living organisms and complex systems) and to a lesser extent to the conservation biologist component (save the planet!) stuff.

262 274 Sad Running.Yeah, there is no good way.The best way is a long healthy ending in a peaceful, painless death in bed.We can't all get that though. My mom suffered to an extent but it wasn't that long. She was mostly sedated these last few weeks. She had given so much taking care of her mother though only to get diagnosed and die so shortly after it was over.I don't like to say "unfair" because we all know there is no fair in life but it is sad.

Evolution never comes up because, frankly, the evidence is so clear from genetic data that the organisms evolve there is nothing to debate.  It'd be like physicists sitting around fretting over getting people to accept carbon dating

See what I mean. Now I think that statement is BS. I don't know of anyone who doesn't think organisms evolve. I know a bunch of people that don't think fish walked out of the ocean and changed into humans though and there is no evidence that they have.

That part of evolution is just like religion, you just have to believe it happened.

Is this the end for ______?

After these ___________ related revelations, can _____ survive?

Will ________ be able to maintain it's power and influence in light of the recent ______ scandal?

Etc etc etc.

I'm sorry but the Williams sisters are just way too manly looking. I'm sure that once they retire and soften up a bit they'll probably be attractive, but right now they just look like dudes.

When you're a woman in her early twenties, going out drinking with a group of friends (including the guy you've had your eye on) and don't want to do something foolish, wear ugly underwear. Men's tidy-whiteys if available.

Vanity will keep a woman from doing a lot of stupid shit.

386 I have to disagree with "I'm in my forties and barely get a glance," a little bit. I recently went back to work after being a "mom" for seventeen years. In Mom mode, in heather gray sweatpants and a White Sox t-shirt, no one looked at me, sure. But since I've slapped the heels back on and reclaimed The Power of Cleavage, I get ogled all time. I'm not 25, of course, I'll never be that again, but quite often I get the look. Even from younger guys...why, I'm not sure. It was actually quite empowering, after having thought I had passed "maiden" and "mother"and was rapidly bearing down on "crone," but I know that it won't last too much longer so I'm enjoying my little Renaissance.

I work a lot and, with a bunch of men who know me for being fairly no-nonsense so that contributes to being over-looked a bit as well. And that's just as well while at work. I've always been the buddy-type of girl.

That must make you feel really good when you read that people have been living in their homes for 2 years or more without making a mortgage payment because the bank hasn't gotten around to foreclosing or it's tied up in court.

That's why the retail sector hasn't gone tits up yet, people spending money on toys and tv's since they've got some freed up cash from skipping that big payment.

Another reason for 'big profits' is that nobody wants to be committed on anything big in fear of the next crappy regulation or economic disaster. Being cash poor in those kinds of times is how companies die.

What chaps my ass is people my age who are retired already as firefighters or EMTs with fat pensions.  I'm looking at working until I'm dead, if I ever do work again.

What's wrong with glasses?  If you get some newer frames, you might be ok.  I think Lasik is a little extreme and contacts are a pain in the butt.

Friday night outfit?  You'd be best off getting separates you can mix and match so that you don't have an "outfit".  If you show up at the same bar every Friday night in the same thing, people may think that's kind of funny.  They'd be like "There's that guy again.  He's wearing his dating uniform.  It must be Friday!"

Your best bet would be to have a trusted friend who's a girl who has a clue about clothes who could go shopping with you.  (A lot about clothes too is having the right fit, the right color,  and the right style for your body shape).  The next best thing would be to go to a nice department store and make an appt. with a personal shopper.  Now that person may try to pressure you into buying stuff you don't want to, so that's why it's best to go with a friend who is honest and knows a thing or two about clothes.

If you are ever out here in Seattle again, I'm sure PGIS and I could hook you up with some stuff that would look good on you.  Are there any fashion savy moronettes who live close to chemmy?

525 With all of this Herman Cain banning mosques controversy going on, I suggest a simple solution. Congress should pass a law creating a Religion Review Board. The RRB will perform thorough investigations of every religious group, and after these investigations will issue Official First Amendment Permits which will allow such groups to practice their religion without government interference.

I'd just suggest you go upscale and spend way more than you normally would and get something that fits. The separates idea is a good one.

Amusing date story

(There's been a lot of   breezy and unsupported comments here today, in other threads.

Some moron said that Singapore was practically the same as Indonesia when it comes to Islam --- never mind that Singapore is 75% ethnic Chinese and less than 15% Islamic, while Indonesia is 1% ethnic Chinese and 85% Islamic.

Another moron said that most Pakistanis who fled from India during the Partition were in the "untouchable caste".  Never mind that only Hindus have castes, and that all non-Hindus are outside the caste system and therefore (nominally) "untouchables". Never mind that a particular Hindu Indian community defined by by heredited occupations (the Dalits)  were regarded as untouchable...to some Hindus..  Never mind that Englishmen were also untouchables under the Hindu system.  Never mind that great gobs of Muslim Indians lived in majority Muslim states at Partition, and do so (to a lesser extent) to this day.)

608 My bug story was from vacation.

We used to vacation in the tropics a lot. Learned all sorts of useful skills like how a mosquito net works (you tuck the bottom edge between the mattress and box springs).

One night in Fiji, though, it was a nice night after a fun day of diving, and I thought I'd get some reading in -- so I put the electric camp lantern on the bedside table, and tucked in under the mosquito net with a good book.

But it kept getting darker and darker and darker.....so I decided that I'd turn off the camp lantern and go to sleep. Except the reason it was darker was because the mosquito net had an inch-thick layer of assorted nasties all over it, as did the wall, the bedside table, and half the camp lantern. Seriously, it was right out of an Indiana Jones film.

I managed to thwack the bugs off the mosquito net, then reach the lantern without opening the net and get it turned off. Probably lost only about a pint of blood in the process, as the little shits jabbed my hand through the net.

Never tried that particular stupid maneuver again.

It was a time of experimention is all.

Dick Grayson likes orange alien poon.  Or crippled girl poon.  I don't think he's remotely attracted to fully functional human poon.

I always had a thing for Mary Jane Watson. Hot ginger who should be played by Christina Hendricks in the next Spidey sequel instead of Kirsten Dunst

Next Spidey is a reboot, lacking in Mary-Jane.  *Tear*

They're going with (ugh) Gwen Stacy.

I vote Christina Hendricks to play a role that wears something small and revealing.

688 Recall the soliloquy  from "I choke myself Carradine " in Kill Bill where he discusses the unique story of Superman. Superman hides himself by being the antithesis of Superman; i.e., a super nerd. A total loser with no socially redeemable skills at all. Clark Kent is a parody of the strong and successful, thus a comment on the weakness of humans.

I thing Keanu Reeves answers this properly in his last battle with Dennis Hopper in Speed. You may be smarter than me, but I'm taller!

Have a good night all.

692 ok report on ellie the rescue horse! she is finally wearing her bandages and her leg is almost healed! i am so excited. Shes due for another trim and shes sound again so i am happy with her feet.

the face that had me at my wits end is starting to heal and i am gaurdedly optomistic about how it will heal when it cools down.

i am somewhat downhearted that the heat is due to pick up on tues. SHe has gotten so well behaved her benefactor and mamesake can handle her when i change bandages on her, too. this is a real plus since he pays the bills. So its good to be adorable for daddy.

presently shes in my friend's mare motel hiding from the heat. He put an insulating paint on the roof that keeps it ten degrees cooler than my barn so shes sitting in there, talking to the two mares on either side, happy as a clam.

697 OK, time for a musical rant. If you listen to country, you will find out stuff about pickup trucks, jilted or jilting wimmins, and faithful dogs. Sometimes all in the same song. Oh, and you might hear a complaint or two about day jobs.

Rock covers a much broader area. Yeah, it's still around 50% about love and 'tang; but wait, there's more. Take religion, for example. Lots of band members got evicted from their churches over their music, and they sang about it. Let's sample a few:

Queen -- Liar
 Jethro Tull -- My God
Alice Cooper -- No More Mr. Nice Guy
REM -- Losing My Religion

I've probably missed a bunch. I think Aerosmith and Black Sabbath had similar discussions about their estrangement. Good thing they weren't muslims.

howard is angry they wont let him smoke, was supposed to call when he hit DC And has not yet called. He always tells me he will call when he hits DC and he never does. THis doesnt worry me at all, its him bein normal.

i will let you know as i miss our online rondezvous last night since we got on at different times and when i tried to hit him up it showed him as there but he wasnt on... or more likely was dozing.

700 743 Heaven & Hell (Black Sabbath) - Bible Black

OK, I listened to this one and it doesn't really fit my theme above. This song is more devil worship, which was not the effect I was pushing. I think one of their early songs addresses their estrangement more.

702 746 3 dog night -- Liar ...

I like TDN, but this song is primarily a war protest song. Religion has little to do with their theme. Good try though.

Maybe. I read the lyrics and it seems they are more interested in trashing TV evangelists....a worthy goal, but really not estrangement. Okay, maybe a bit. I could add it to the list.

hmmm.  I always thought it was a man's anger over a cheating woman ... I just liked the song better than Queen's Liar ...

710 Bruce Dickinson - Arc of Space

I'll say no to this one. It' more of an evangelical, not an estrangement. My theme was bands pushed away from their religion because of what they were doing, and their anger at their treatment afterwards. Then to bitchslap the establishment in song.

It's just a fun mental exercise.

713 actually, the point I was making is that it is only obvious to the people here. I just had to tell my friend not to fill up her car until later in the week, to just put in enough gas to tide her over since gas prices have to come down since oil is going down. She literally had no idea.
