— Gabriel Malor Twenty-five years ago today, Ellen Ripley roared back onto the big screen, complete with a genre swerve and a giant mech suit.

If we could all just have a moment of silence for the greatest movie hero of all time?
...
Thank you. My additional thoughts on Ripley are here. In superhero news, here's the new Dark Knight Rises teaser:
And here's Karl Urban as the new Judge Dredd:

Guy has a giant noggin, but let's be real: it could be anybody under that helmet. Oy.
If you're into Made-for-TV heroes, here's the Walking Dead Season 2 teaser:
I never really got into it, but I know they're some folks who did.
For those of you (gay) who like their heroes lovingly hand drawn with rippling muscles and too-square-for-real-life jaws , meet DC Comics' latest flightless, loveless space orphan, the superhero formerly known as Superman. How the mighty have fallen.
And since Ace already posted the other Captain America video today (see, I read the blog sometimes), some of you may be old enough to remember the old Captain America show:
That's all I've got. Now, FLY MONKEYS.

there have only been 2 batman reboots right?
I don't think all the ones in the 1990s were reboots but continuations, even though the main character was changed.

NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - Borders Group Inc (BGPIQ.PK), the second-largest U.S. bookstore chain, said it has canceled an upcoming bankruptcy auction and will close its doors for good.
The company said in a statement Monday it was unable to find a buyer willing to keep it in operation and will sell itself to a group of liquidators led by Hilco Merchant Resources.
Borders' roughly 400 remaining stores will close, and nearly 11,000 jobs will be lost, according to the company.
and after the closing bell, Cisco made their rumored lay-offs official. Another 4000 in the US off to the dole line.

The last two Batman films have been awesome. I think the last one was the second highest grossing film in history. The early ones with Michael Keaton and others were disasters, but the Christian Bale Dark Knight stuff has been unbelievable. I can't wait for the next one to come out, even though the trailer sucked...
whoa whoa whoa, what?
The first Batman with Michael Keaton was probably the best one. I'll admit the second one was bad, but it's pretty hard to make a movie with the Penguin as the bad guy. Some villans only work in comic books.
It does go without saying that the Val Kilmer one was terrible and the George Clooney one was one of the gayest things ever made. Literally, they put nipples on the bat suit.

The first Batman with Michael Keaton was probably the best one.
Absolutely not. It was good. Better than Batman Begins, even. But not better than the Dark Knight. The thing about the Keaton Batman is that it's almost light-hearted enough to be considered a different genre. Keaton's Batman was already broken when the audience joins the story. That's the basis of the story. Whereas the Dark Knight's Batman gets broken right there in the course of the film for the audience to see. It's horrific and terrific filmmaking, barely comparable to the Keaton Batman.

Hell yeah it is. I love that show. It's the only one I watch on SciFi. My dad watches Haven and Warehouse 17. It's got a really good writing team. I think it'd be cool to live in Eureka.
The first 2 seasons of Eureka are the best. It wasn't until 3 and 4 they started chopping it in half; no idea why They'll cycle through half the season and then wait until next summer to release the rest of the season. Totally sucks ass.

really? I knew Joel Schumacher took over starting with that one, but I didn't remember the nips until the fourth one.
It's been a while since I've seen them they were so bad.
If they want to make a new batman movie, now that the nolan franchise is at an end, I think they should try something along the lines of the Batman Beyond cartoon series.

I'll say it again: the only reason that movie isn't in the conversation of "the greatest films ever made" is because nobody respects the sci-fi/horror genre unless Stanley Kubrick is directing.

Oh, no....random memory....bzzzt --
This French count traveled to England to find a bride. After a fairytale romance, he brought her back to his fine castle and had a magnificent wedding. Scant few years later, she found herself with child and the nervous father-to-be summoned the most experienced physician in the countryside to attend.
Once her labor began, the Count summoned the physician to her bedside. After a cursory examination, he took the count downstairs and said, "things are progressing entirely normally -- but you look like a complete wreck. Sit with me beside the fire and play some cards to pass the time."
A few hands later, shouting is heard from upstairs. "Mon dieu, mon dieu!", she cried out -- and the Count started to his feet and started heading for the staircase. The doctor grabbed his arm and said, steadily, "still much time....sit....deal the cards."
A couple of hours later, there's another ruckus. The lady could be clearly heard to be yelling, "my God! my God!" Again, the husband jumps to his feet, and the doctor again checks him -- saying, "sit, sit, plenty of time."
The Count finds it increasingly difficult to stay awake, and each hand of cards takes longer than the last. The doctor, by contrast, is calm and alert. For a third time, shouting is heard from upstairs: "Oy, Gevalt!"
Standing and grabbing his bag, the doctor says, "it's time."

My favorite film of all time.
When I was a kid, I liked Aliens best. Right, an action flick. And as I got a bit older, I really started to dig Alien. But now that I'm really old and jaded, I absolutely love the psychological futility of Alien3. When Ripley slams the fence in Bishop II's face, giving up even the slight chance she has to live, oh man that kills me.
What about Alien Resurrection, you say? I don't know what you're talking about.

What?
The Dark Knight was so overrated. It bordered on ridiculous.
The only redeeming part was Heath Ledger's portrayal as the Joker. And let's be honest here, the Joker is probably the best villian in all comics. Therefore, he's the hardest to screw up.
You had the 10 minute pointless chase scene with the beyond dumb ending. You had the lame Gordon getting murdered twist, which I still don't really understand the point of.
You turned a great villian from Batman Begins, the Scarecrow, into some lame two bit drug dealer in a scene that felt like it was shoehorned in because people wanted a Scarecrow cameo.
You had an ending scene which was corny beyond words.
I'm sorry, but that film's best moments were when the Joker was on screen and the Joker's dialogue, everything else wasn't very good.
As a complete movie, Batman Begins was far better.

I have massive admiration for Carpenter's remake of The Thing, but honestly it still scares the shit out of me too much (in the 'gross-out' sense) to embrace it completely. Furthermore, while it's similarly hard to criticize (seriously, what are its structural or exceutional flaws, unless you're going to cite the gore?), it didn't offer the mind-blowing new world that Alien did -- two worlds, really, in the Nostromo and the alien planet/derelict.
As I said above, Alien is literally perfect from a technical standpoint (in the sense that there isn't a single aspect of the film from scripting to casting to filming to FX that can be improved upon), but it ALSO has this intellectually fascinating -- and truly terrifying on a deeply psychological level -- monster, maybe the greatest monster in cinematic history. And THEN it also has the innovation of the female hero (who came as a surprise to the original viewers, I might point out -- Tom Skerritt was billed as the star of the film, not the completely unknown Sigourney Weaver, and his death halfway through came as a huge shock to audiences).
Finally, one thing I absolutely adore about the film, and which is a completely lost art in modern cinema, is the way it so methodically takes its time setting the scene, establishing the universe of the film, introducing the characters, slowly building the mystery and the horror, and then suddenly EXPLODES in a way that's ten thousand times more effective than it would've been had the film began with a lot of crash-boom-bang. Go back and watch that film again -- you're 45 minutes before Kane even gets to the egg. Its patience is a marvel.

Alien 3 is a much better film than it was rated as when it came out, but there's absolutely no question that the theatrical version is a fucking mess (huge gaps in the plot where an entire reel of the film was excised, a general drabness in the set design and anonymity of the various prisoner victims, a general ugliness that lacked the 'beauty-in-ugliness' aesthetic Fincher would later perfect).
The restored DVD cut is a significant improvement, but I still can't get over the vicarious brutality of some of Fincher's decisions -- the autopsy of Newt is so horrifying, and apparently Fincher originally wanted it to be far more graphic, as a big "fuck you" to audiences -- and general sense that everyone was making a shit up on the set as it was being filmed (which they were). It feels sloppy.
Also, the computer alien FX (from the infancy of the computer animation) are just awful.

I want to see a war movie with the four-man flamethrower squads that the Germans used in World War I. Each flamethrower was served by a carrier, a lance operator, an assistant-grenadier, and a squad leader. They were all loaded down with hand grenades, pistols, bayonets, and sharpened spades.
The Germans used 216 portable and 24 static flamethrowers at the Battle of Skrobowa, November 9, 1916. It was the largest flamethrower attack in history. The Germans used shock troops armed with flamethrowers, hand grenades, automatic rifles, and light machine guns to take a series of concrete fortifications that had resisted seven massive assaults by the Austrians over a period of weeks.
The Germans took the forts in one hour, showing you the difference between them and Austrians.

Shit, they have it better than I do. I've got one color television (sadly in Milwaukee, not in the room I rent in Indy) and no cable, washer, or dryer.
From the FA:
For example, if the real income of every single American were to triple magically overnight, the new poverty measure would show no drop in poverty because the poverty income standards would also triple.
They do that with childhood obesity, too--it's a percentile (and based on age cohort...the tall kids are fucked). If every kid in America was skin and bones, 10% of them would still be defined as "obese."

They'd been building this for some years since Vince has been getting quite old. They needed to replace him with a younger guy who can be the bad guy authority figure and still take an occasional bump. Vince had gotten too old to take any hits.
So a bit of an end to an era. McMahon was/is the PT Barnum of our day. He built an impressive global business out of a carnival sideshow industry.
They might do an angle with him trying to get control back. But I don't know. I think he's had some non-trivial health problems in recent years. He's scaled back his role hugely and when he did appear he often looked ... old and a bit frail.
If they had run this angle 10 years ago the show would have ended with Vince screaming and yelling and vowing revenge. But tonight's Raw ended with Vince alone in the ring, crying, and thanking the fans.

Not as bad as Batman and Robin, for starters.
If I had to describe Batman Forever quickly I'd say it's more "kid-friendly", made like that on purpose because of how dark Batman Returns was.

It's a stupid premise
I had to do a reality check on myself so went to You Tube and watched the last part of it again. I had forgotten that both he and his wife/girlfriend had doc bills. The reason they received bills is BECAUSE THEY DON'T ACTUALLY fucking live on minimum wage! They kept going on about how some people are stuck in that life forever and all I could think was that the working poor will manage to work themselves out of that situation. The working poor still have hope for a better life.
It was condescending bullshit. And, of course, they had to mention the contrast of how they had just left the Academy Awards before heading there.
Jackholes.

Reader's Digest is dying. I'm sad given the memories of that once great institution. My parents read it voraciously, and I followed suit as a kid. I learned a lot from Reader's Digest and its umbrella of publications.
Memory of the humor columns, especially, remind me of a world as it ought to be. RD humor was very basic, seemingly vanilla. It strove to offend nobody, it LIMITED itself to non-offense. That's hard to do; just think of today's comics. The shocking fact is that it is stupid easy to be "edgy". It ain't easy to be Carson. Hell, nobody even tries anymore, except for bastions like RD.
RD articles used to be informative and salt-of-the-earth in nature. Pick up an old Reader's Digest, meaning one 30+ plus older, and see what I mean. The forum assumed, and found, and built a broad readership with a wide variety of articles that delved with gusto into the heart of life, finding it even when considering how to best grow a cabbage.
The RD of the last 20 or so years, however, will not be missed. It sucks. It is all politicized now, and might as well be a thicker edition of Time or Newsweek or Mother Jones or whatever. The RD of today is just another journalistic staple like every other journalistic staple.
Do you think it odd that after we started training people in journalism that we started training an army of same-saying borgs? I don't.
The cruel fact is the Reader's Digest of old died a while back, and we've lost the power to bring it back. Maybe that's an opportunity for someone to refine and distill what was lost and present that model again. Go find a variety of quality in written word and throw it up because it is good.
Nobody does that anymore.

Well, I think Reader's Digest is getting worse and worse too, but probably not for the same reasons. Judging from the way their covers have been evolving over the last ten years, they're marching steadily towards the tabloid family they share the newsstands with. Blandness seems to be the sickness. Endless lists about any kind of mundane middle-class thing under the sun and none of the thoughtful detail that it used to have when they published the table of contents in the front.
And damn, if it isn't hard to find an article in it now, especially the regular departments.

Captain America II: Death Too Soon. The better of the two late-'70s made-for-TV Captain America movies. Features a hilariously miscast Christopher Lee as the Latin American drug kingpin "Miguel."
Space Mutiny. Watch the MSTK cut. The high-water mark of the Mike Nelson era.
Strike Commando. Rambo in clown shoes. The scene where Brown mourns the death of his Vietnamese friend is one of the greatest unintentionally funny moments in cinematic history. My favorite B-flick.
The Firing Line. Worth watching just for the scene where the Central American banana-republic general calls Shannon Tweed a "pooh-tah." Includes a death-by-helicopter sequence that makes Rambo II look positively understated.
Robowar. A shameless simultaneous knock-off of both Predator and Terminator. The ending hinges on a clichéd, see-it-coming-from-two-states-away plot twist.
The Howling II. Reunites Brown with Christopher Lee. What Michael Jackson's long-form Thriller video would have been if it had been made by a heterosexual man. The most interminably drawn-out werewolf transformation scenes in history.
Cage II. Reb Brown tries to keep a mentally-retarded Lou Ferrigno from being exploited in poorly-choreographed illegal cage fights!
Yor, the Hunter from the Future. Reb Brown is the savage savior of the post-post-apocalyptic prehistoric future. Cavemen with laser ray-guns fight robots that look like a K-Mart Darth Vader Halloween costume.

I made the only move that was available. Wish I could say things are going great, but I haven't been paid at all since New Year's since my bookings are less than the agency fees. I've been working for nothing since Jan 1, other than a weekend I temped. Can't even afford to buy unlimited minutes on my phone so I have to do everything by email now. I'm focusing my efforts on finding something temporary to bring in some cash. Luckily I at least have a roof over my head and something to eat, but it sucks that I can't provide that for myself right now. I didn't expect to make a load of money right away, but I expected to at least make something, enough to buy a used car at least.
Put your hand in your pocket and fish out the change. Whatever comes out in your hand is more than I've been paid this year.

Posted by: Wm T Sherman at July 19, 2011 12:07 AM (C0Z3w)
Nicely done -- and anything that gets rags like this back into the public consciousness is a good thing....they're widely forgotten works of art.
If I had to be picky, though, I'd say that it was played too technically. Although we hear rags from piano rolls, contemporaneous records showed that they were played quite dynamically -- with various parts of the music intended to "sing" in counterpoint. That this was seldom notated in the sheet music, and having +/- four logical "voices" in each piece transcribed for two hands, can make the effect a bit difficult to reconstruct.
That said, later compositions -- e.g. Zez Confrey -- cannot be played as lyrically because it makes the pieces into a horrible train wreck. Then, again, you can't really sing along to the melody of "Dizzy Fingers" or "Kitten on the Keys".
"Classic" ragtime can swing a bit, to let the parts sing properly.

You don't have to "walk" them.
You can leave them for days at a time (food, water, litter).
They wash themselves.
They medicate themselves.
They're nice-looking.

I wouldn't say he lost. He maximized his effective time, and managed to keep going until his spouse and kids could be with him, and now is in a better place free from toil and pain. His battle is over, but he fought well. If death is losing, we all might as well reconcile ourselves to being losers.

My dad made us do fire drills in the middle of the night when we least expected it., and took us swimming to the local pool every night in the summer. And made my brothers sit in the back of the station wagon seats which faced the traffic, tee hee.
And whipped us when we needed it.

Hey, Gushka -- thanks for the update on the rescue. I'd been wondering. Sometimes the world is going to shit in a handbasket and you're swearing and wincing because your leg won't bend right....and yet, you only get misty-eyed when you think, "I hope that puppy* doesn't have to be put down because its previous owner was such a monster." Makes no rational sense at all.
And, for Aurochs.....if we can overlook the fact that he's a freakin' lawyer, his choice of dates is the least of our concerns. I've met him; he's a good guy -- even if you have to run off to the bathroom and wash your hands when you think of what he must do professionally.

I won't. Living well is winning, no matter how it ends.
I had an interesting email discussion with a classics professor regarding Socrates' last words. Plato says, "The coldness was spreading about as far as his waist when Socrates uncovered his face — for he had covered it up — and said (they were his last words): 'Crito, we ought to offer a cock to Asclepius.210 See to it, and don't forget.'"
Evidently, there is a big debate among classicists as to the meaning and implications of these last words.....and, yet, I thought it obvious. Hemlock poisoning is generally a horrible death, with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, headache, tremors, foaming at the mouth, and such. And yet, executioners in Greece concocted it in such a way to lead to a peaceful, sedated paralysis. Socrates debates the intended effects with a jailor, prior to taking the poison, and his last words refer to a sacrifice for the god of dosage and blending. How difficult is it to infer that he gives thanks for escaping the raw effects of the herb due to the skill of its preparers?

One thing I have tried to be is honest on this blog, albeit with a lot of snark and humor at times, but for whatever it is worth and I'll admit to it right now and I am not ashamed of it. I am in corporate America and follow the capital markets and am quite spiritual. I know this opens me up to ridicule but I don't care.
I am nearly in tears driving to my office each morning as I know the lies the administration is propagating and I look at the state of this culture and the kids who are growing up and who have no clue what is going on.
The insiders know this is not going to end good.
Social security has over 2 trillion in IOU's yet the administration says it is solvent and that we 'just don't understand how "auctions" work.'
A treasury auction is simply selling debt for immediate capital to work with.
There is no money in the SOS trust fund except IOU's which are considered intragovernmental debt. There is approximately 5 Trillion of intragovernmental debt and another 9 Trillion of public debt i.e. bonds that were sold at treasury auctions. On top of 45 Trillion plus in unfunded liabilities.
For those of you who know in their heart that something is terribly wrong --- Follow your instincts, for something is indeed terribly wrong.
For those of you who are spiritual, your heart is likely beckoning you in prayer.
Thanks for listening.

Meanwhile, the fallout from the OKeefe videos mounts:
Ohio Department of Job and Family Services spokesman Ben Johnson says the video is "extremely troubling" and that the agency and the counties involved are looking into it.
In the video, a Franklin County worker suggests the men hide ownership of an $800,000 car, adding "you didn't hear that from me." In a statement, the county says she has been placed on paid administrative leave.

If you live in the eternal now, you have no compunctions about robbing the past or putting the future in debt. We now have a president who seemingly can't recall his statements from last week, much less 2006, and a party that is desperately flailing to become Europe even though "Europe" is now gone.
We live in dangerous times, indeed.
The trick is not to set things right -- reversing everything since the New Deal goes a long way towards that and is relatively easy to identify. The trick is to transition gracefully.
It's one thing to say that people should have more savings for their retirement; it's quite another to say that people who believed the government had saved for their retirement should be left destitute......but, yet, that government savings has already been looted and squandered. The elderly cannot merely regroup and start again -- their energy flags, their resources dwindle -- and, yet, the promises pile up while the economic drain bleeds out.
Things really are terribly wrong, and they're getting worse. Those who would pretend to continue the current course are working against the inevitable correction -- but that correction will happen, with all the fruitless hypocrisies added-on besides.

Posted by: buzzion at July 19, 2011 02:19 AM (oVQFe)
They'll realize it come January. October is when the new books debut.
My comic shop owner buddy talks with his Diamond Distribution rep quite a bit and the buzz on the inside is that DC is merely testing the waters. They figure after a few months DC will go back to the old story-lines. Indeed, DC's golden boy writer, Grant Morrison, has already been hinting at that. Plus, fan backlash has been rather negative.
Their current editor-in-chief, Bob Harras, was also the EIC at Marvel in the mid-90s and did this exact same thing. Goose sales by restarting titles with new #1s. It worked in a way, but eventually Marvel would simply revert books back to the old numberings.

I believe we could have gotten past 2008 with a quick depression. I base this just on gut-feel, and nothing quantitative. Since then, we've TARP'd and Porkulated and QE1'd and QE2'd and added billions of crap to the national debt, the Federal Reserve balance sheet, and to the annual deficit......and we find ourselves mired in a recession that never ends with a recovery.
How, then, do we convince the American people that we have to take our medicine? That if we suck up to twice the hurt, we end up with half the long-term damage? That things must get worse before they get better if they are not to continue getting worse?
Posted by: cthulhu at July 18, 2011 10:56 PM (kaalw)
You'd think that would be a terrible way to go. But it wasn't, for either of them. Firstly, they'd made their peace about it with God, and were looking forward to that chapter of existence. Secondly, they were in the care of people that loved them.
It's amazing what a person can endure, and because of that, none of us should fear what happens. People make a horror out of death that is way out of proportion to the actual situation.
I've revoked my living will. I no longer give a damn how tough dying might be to endure, I'll endure it, because it's not forever. I don't care about how I go, I just plan on dealing with it, the way every man has had to do since the first man.
Our fear and anxiety about death is artificially made worse by long lives and technology, even though those things have allowed most of us live to the age of wisdom. This nattering worry about being kept alive by artificial means is a bunch of nonsense. If that's what happens, why not just deal with it? What's the big scare? Kevorkian's "way out" is for people frightened by too many television shows written by writers under the age of forty. It's a stupid as television or plays or novels about war written by people who've never experienced any of it. (The only legitimate concern I can see is the financial one. That's overplayed by the scare mongers as well. Most people ante up whatever they can, and they will probably always do so, and that's their choice to make.) I'm willing to let the doc try their best. It's how they learn, after all. Maybe it'll do someone else some good.
It used to be a point of honor among many warriors of various tribes on this continent to "show brave," by smiling at your captors, and refusing to cry out while being tortured slowly to death. How could they possibly do this? I think the certitude of death brings it's own capacity to endure, and that concept is well worth pondering, even if you know your ticket has been punched years in advance.
Celebrate life, honor your parents and ancestors, and tough it out to the end. Why miss out on anything?
This is the last lesson my parents taught me, and I love them for their graciousness and courage. May we all be as courageous when the time comes, and teach our children not to fear the experience.

In Ann Arbor, where Borders was born, they've closed all but one store. I'm guessing it's on it's last legs, and Ann Arbor is a big kollidge town. Lots of readers.
Everyone's buying books online or reading them online or on a handheld device. Shopping in the steel&fake-brick stores doesn't give you the access to reader reviews and arguments over a title you're perusing, plus the stores just don't carry enough product.
With hardcovers costing more than $4/gal $25/copy, and paperbacks dying, with trade papers trying to replace them (yeah, great idea, not), electronic versions are the way to go.
