Overnight Open Thread (ONT) Friday Edition [Ben]
— Open Blogger

I got pulled into this at the last moment. So if it stinks, and oh boy will it, then that's my excuse. Sit back and embrace the suck.

Brilliantly Smart-A$$ Responses to Completely Well Meaning Signs.

HereÂ’s a taste.

It should be noted that the last one would probably get you a $10,000.00 fine from OSHA.

From Cracked, Six Judges Who Went Insane on the Bench.

Including one Judge who gave a poetic ruling:

We thought that we would never see
A suit to compensate a tree.
A suit whose claim in tort is prest
Upon a mangled tree's behest;
A tree whose battered trunk was prest
Against a Chevy's crumpled crest;
A tree that faces each new day
With bark and limb in disarray;
A tree that may forever bear
A lasting need for tender care.
Flora lovers though we three,
We must uphold the court's decree.
Meh. ItÂ’s no undersea grotto, thatÂ’s for sure.

Are you Sexperienced? Check out the Sexperience 1000.

As it turns out, I'm not as sexperienced as I should be. There was no option for lights off and clothes on.

T-Minus 20 days until the start of the NHL Regular Season! Sing along if you know the lyrics!

Apparently this is how you sentence a terrorist.
Personally, I've always been on the "war" side of "war on terror", but this judge gives a pretty good argument for the other side.

Here is the money quote from sentencing:

We are not afraid of any of your terrorist co-conspirators, Mr. Reid. We are Americans. We have been through the fire before. There is all too much war talk here. And I say that to everyone with the utmost respect.

Here in this court where we deal with individuals as individuals, and care for individuals as individuals, as human beings we reach out for justice.

You are not an enemy combatant. You are a terrorist. You are not a soldier in any war. You are a terrorist. To give you that reference, to call you a soldier gives you far too much stature. Whether it is the officers of government who do it or your attorney who does it, or that happens to be your view, you are a terrorist.

And we do not negotiate with terrorists. We do not treat with terrorists. We do not sign documents with terrorists.

We hunt them down one by one and bring them to justice.

So war talk is way out of line in this court. YouÂ’re a big fellow. But youÂ’re not that big. YouÂ’re no warrior. I know warriors. You are a terrorist. A species of criminal guilty of multiple attempted murders.

In a very real sense Trooper Santiago had it right when first you were taken off that plane and into custody and you wondered where the press and where the TV crews were and you said youÂ’re no big deal. YouÂ’re no big deal.

I enjoy watching standup on YouTube. It allows me to accomplish two things I love, laughing and the avoidance of human interaction. I've been on a Dave Chapelle kick lately. I've always thought his standup was better than his TV show. Normally I don't care for "black people act like this and white people act like that" humor, but I think Dave pulls it off. (EXTREMELY NSFW Language)

Just a reminder, be sure to sign up for the Ace of Spades HQ Facebook group.

And don't forget to throw a few shekels to the head Ewok. Movie tickets and dissertation length reviews aren't going to pay for themselves.

Team Moron,

I just read the saddest thing ever:

Posted by: TwinPeaksMom at September 16, 2011 10:41 PM (HjxoE)

I see what you did there.

The best was the deep fried watermelon.

Deep fried KoolAid was pretty close behind that though, like eating a cake donut filled with a pixistick.

Deep fried ribs and deep fried avocado were both blah. The first too salty, the second too mushy.

107 Oh like the entire fucking place.  I swear this place is turning into a money pit.

Unfortunately, that is something most first-time homeowners have to deal with - fixing the slip-ups of the previous owners.  When my family moved it to our home almost 20 years ago, my stepfather had to go through and basically replace all the outlets because the previous owners tried to do it on the cheap.  Hell, we still don't know what all the breaker switches turn off in the house.

And that's even nothing compared to the flooding problems in the basement.

Good luck, cj - you are going to need it.  .

What would the ONT be without nuggets from dum-dum on the Solyndra thread;

So President Obama personally makes these loan decisions now?
Posted by: proudonkey at September 16, 2011 05:25 PM

Frankly, I don't believe President Obama personally even has the time for decisions like these.
Posted by: proudonkey at September 16, 2011 05:28 PM

Thats Jarrett then, not Obama personally making these decisions. I hope you can see the distinction. Pinning this on Obama without more evidence is irresponsible.
Posted by: proudonkey at September 16, 2011 05:30 PM

Posted by: proudonkey at September 16, 2011 05:34 PM

Well, actually, I'm from El Paso, TX. I'm a military brat. I've been in North Alabama since the late 70s. I always thought I'd get the hell out of here as soon as possible but my daughter started giving me grandgirls so I'm not racing out of the area. (Caveat: grannie but in my 40s). I see the girls about once a month. I could do that from anywhere. My big concern these days is continued employment. I'm working on a gomerment job. I'm an Irish/French/Serbian/Danish mutt. Walker, Kasich, Corbett and whoever the fuck governs Michigan should get together and all do this.

It would guarantee the GOP 32 electoral votes at least, but 37 are easily reachable- without carrying a single one of those states.

We could lose all 4 of those states and still win the election- without carrying NH, CO, NM, IA, NV, or even Virginia.

271 I think they probably knew the pilot, and they're trying to see if anyone they knew was hit by the plane. Glad to hear your relatives were away from the field and safe. I hope that nobody they know was injured or killed. I've only been in Reno three years, and have been to the Air Race each year since moving here. One thing I've noticed is that Reno has a bit of a small town atmosphere, and that there are a lot of people who are regulars at the Air Races. So unfortunately, I get the impression that if I don't know someone who was injured, I know someone who knows someone who was.

You can't touch their sweet sweet government benefits but they supposedly want "government off their backs." How fucking dumb are you? It's like a heroin addict complaining that drug users are a real problem in society. If that's what the Tea Party stands for then you can count me out. He got belligerant that an enlisted was trying to tell him what to do. Why wouldnt they come over to him?

So, they just let him walk around, swinging in the breeze...nobody had anything further to say to him. Everyone saw.

In 1983 or '84, my Silicon Valley employer sent me to Hong Kong for five weeks to install some equipment at our PC board assembly plant, and I stayed at the Sheraton hotel at the tip of the Kowloon peninsula. Upon returning to the Bay Area, my mom told me that two of her cousins from Perth, Australia, spent a few days at that same hotel while I was there. Unfortunately, they didn't tell her about their trip until after they had returned home, and since I had last seen them when I was a kid, I wouldn't have recognized them had I run into them. Still, I found the coincidence amazing.

No.  Fuckin' Ralph's has announced that they will shut themselves down!  It's not like we don't have Gelson's, Bristol Farms, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, Target, Walmart, Smart & Final and a billion little bodegas we can shop at.  Very fuckin' weird, if you ask me.  They're bringing in temp help this weekend to empty out their stores.

And, in case you have not been following this absurd story, it's because the grocery losers don't want to pony up an extra 9 bucks a week for their health insurance.

One thing that's guaran-damned-teed is that the Dems (and their MSM allies) will whine incessantly about the GOP being big mean undemocratic bullies for doing what they themselves did just months earlier.

Personally I'd like to see the 17th Amendment repealed so we could do away with a lot of the influence peddling and politicking we see in the Senate now, but that won't happen.

348 331, Well Peach, when I lived in San Diego, I loved Vons. But that's not what you are asking. It's tough to shut the doors on a grocery store, the loss in perishables would be large $. I'm thinking they either go all PATCO on them, or it's just an idle threat. Then again, any time a big grcer bites shit around here, it becomes an Aldi.

Posted by: Oldsailor's poet at September 16, 2011 07:54 PM (ZDUD4)

349 115 Kratos, well mostly I am just whining - nothing big has gone out in the place, luckily I don't have to do anything like replace the wiring.  It is just 10,000 little things.  Like a chimney cap.  Or tending to the weeds in the cracks of the concrete.  Or getting the gutters cleaned.  Just a ton of little stuff.

Posted by: chemjeff at September 16, 2011 10:46 PM (s7mIC)

A word of advice -- that's why there's industrial-strength. Don't screw around.

Chimney cap? Don't use the fireplace until you get one -- just close the damper and stick a postit on the front saying "don't light without chimney cap."

Weeds in the cracks of the concrete? http://www.flameengineering.com/Weed_Dragon.html

Cleaning gutters? If you're doing it twice, you're doing it wrong -- get screens.

Go nuclear on the problems, and they'll be afraid to re-occur.

362 Ben:

Your lame attempt at an ONT truly sucketh, despite the fact you're pretty much spot-on regarding PA politics.

I like the pics, though -- they remind me of the time I tried to steal about a 30" diameter roll of "DO  NOT ENTER CRIME SCENE" tape from some cops in Bridgeville. Alas, I was alone and as lame as the locals were I couldn't work up the nerve to do it without a confederate distracting them.

If you're bored tonight I suggest it's a grand time to try to swim across the Mon. Just remember to take your boots off before jumping in.

The problem with this apportionment strategy, is it isn't done nationally, it's done individually by certain states, who's political leaders view it as an advantage nationally.  (mostly by democrats recently, but now in PA).

I shudder.

War would simply nuke Pennsylvania just so he can be perpetually right that it is unwinnable. I mean, nobody "wins" if there is no state, right?

While he is at it I hope he nukes Delaware too. It's stubborn existance makes a mockery of real states. States that are more than a toll road between Maryland and New Jersey.

374 331 So, not to change the subject, but the grocery losers' union is about to strike  here in SoCal.  Vons and Albertsons have been advertising for temporary workers for quite some time.  Today, Ralph's announced that, in the event of a strike, they would shut their doors.  OMG, srsly????  Spoke to my dad earlier, who has been very interested in this whole thing since inception, and he thinks that Kroger is just dying to kill off Ralph's, because it's been a dog since they acquired it.  Thoughts and comments?
Posted by: Peaches at September 16, 2011 11:49 PM

I remember the 2003-2004 strike. Went to the Albertson on Hillhurst and never felt the slightest bit bad about crossing their lines.

Just because they want something doesn't mean I have to pay more at Gelson's or Trader Joe's

All the Albertson's down here are gone, Publix and Sweetbay are fine stores to go to

Ralph's has fewer price specials and the store on Glendale and Fletcher always seemed shabby.

The Vons on Los Feliz in Glendale was OK if you liked every language except English

well if you are not stupid, and want to keep him you dont... i do NOT GET some women...

pretty much if you love someone and dont want him to look elsewhere you find out what he likes to eat, how he likes to fuck and you make sure he gets plenty of it.

OTOH...

Guys who dont get what they want might want to look into whats goin on with girlie.

i know someone who spent more time with his dog, his friends and at work, than with his wife... for some reason she didnt do much for him either after a while... and she started off crazy about him.... which was sad. She just got discouraged. So the road runs both ways i guess.

but i find guys to be pretty accommodating if they get lots of BJs steak and strange...

479 Leno is one contradiction. He is hell-bent over the illegal situation, but he spent two years after Bush was out of office ridiculing him, all the while Obama was doing prat-falls. Yes, he knows his cars. My brother-in-law has an annual Christmas tree lot on Olympic Blvd. (one of many). Leno came, picked out a tree, wanted it delivered. One lot-attendant, with a Toyota pick-up took it up to his house in Hollywood Hills. His truck broke down. Leno was beneath his car in minutes and fixed the damn thing. Then I read that he goes to Vegas with such a vast amount of personal protection , you can't get near him and he is haughty and insulting, and demanding. I stopped watching him years ago when he could not let go of Bush jokes.

Never ask females for dating advice.  I could write 20 paragraphs on this topic, but I won't.  Just don't do it.

Bottom line, women will never admit what really attracts them to men, and almost all of their advice is counter productive.  You would be better off going "Costanza" and doing the exact opposite of what they tell you.  Really it ain't good for the most part.

Always meet in a public place with plenty of witnesess... never too close to his place or mine. Suggestion of Coffee shop indicates a nicer person than Bar. If Bar is suggested, i would steer choice to coffee shop or restraunt. If person insists on Bar-- NO DICE. WE'RE DONE.

No movies for a first meetup.

if they send naked pix without being asked for them (a la weiner) NO DICE. CUT ALL CONTACT!!!!

Your mileage may vary. But this is how it was with me.
Grimmy literaslly had to be foisted on me by friends who sandbagged us into proximity to each other long enough to make us comfortable with each other, till he sussed me out and pretended to be furniture to further lull me into a state of security.

Then he took me to a movie. With my kid in tow.

There won't always be someone around to tell you the appropriate thing to do, so you'd better find someone who likes you in spite of what you do when your buds aren't around to guide you.

If you understand females, in the broadest sense, you won't need your buddies around, giving you advice.

Look, like men, women have very reliable attraction buttons.  They just are a bit different than tits n ass....aka looks.....but reliable all the same.

sifty i am a regular Winston Wolf for all kinds of shit but its weird... my advice seems to be good only after 10:30 pm when the horse is down and in a full spasm.

everyone calls me at 9:30 am when the problem starts, but they never take the 9:30 advice. They wait all day, let the problem get worse, and then call back at 10:30 asking what was that again? then i have to break it to them the 10:30 advice is harder and more expensive.

I know thats just sick horses im talking about but it carries over into all kinds of things. I asked someone once why nobody listens to me.  "Because you look like you're Twelve!" She blurted.

sigh. im not sure thats it. But i do know this... im hard to relate to for some girls. Older women i can do fine with.

Aurochs says its because im more like talkin to a not prissy gay man who happens to have a vagina, than a real woman. Please dont tell Grim. The implications would really bother him. But it would explain how i ended up married to a man who liked men for 14 years.

Women are wired as many different ways as men. I think we men get judged a little less for being different from each other.

Men don't put up with other men making rules for how they dress or act. At least straight men don't.

Only weeks later i decided he was beautiful and i wanted to fuck him. So i quietly asked his ex GF is he sufficient? cuz if hes not i dont want to embearass him by revealing some tragic insufficiency somewhere...

Seriously? ok. here we go.

Gushka being pragmatic 101:

if  Single Gushka likes a guy, and want to ask him to spend the night, ask his ex GF if they (and you) are on good terms, and find out what goes on with him. (she is very glad to no longer be single)

that way if he doesnt know his way around the bed, or hes got a tiny winky, you dont embearass him.  And you can decide in advance what to do about it.

I do know someone who got in bed with someone and discovered an insufficiency so TRAGIC she suddenly discovered she had to wash her hair RIGHT THEN, jumped up and went home.

I never want to be that person.

I have heard BTW that Manson from Marilyn Manson has that problem continually, and that this does contribute to his problem is keeping hot women.

Do you prefer doggy style tonight?
You are running low on beer.

You've got to be out of your fuckin' mind.

"Early adopter" of anything is another name for "sucker" -- and with Microsmurf, particularly, you get ripped.

They've got two development teams working on their operating systems -- one whose motto is "no guts, no glory", and the other whose motto is, "no glory, no bloody innards hanging around the cubicles....." The thing is, each can steal from the other, but they do their releases alternately.

Win XP -- same guys that did Win98 and Win7; Win Vista -- same guys that did WinME and are now releasing Win8. Any questions?

I always ask around about a prospect. especially: what did you hate most about him???

and other stuff. take it all with a grain of salt. but forewarned is forearmed. if the breakup was psycho i know they are not grown ups and STAY AWAY. People who talk shit about a person without concrete reasons for resentment might talk that way about you later. People with a string of civilized relationships are generally folks who fight fair, and worth taking a chance on.

I dont like complete "strangers" and all their surprises.

that part of dating sucked. i dont drink on a date, I never ever sleep with people i dont know well. Yes i have trust issues. why do you ask?

Grim and this chick were like family. She was so happy we liked each other, she was perfectly honest about the good, the bad the ugly and the awesome. oh She and her mom were the one who set us up.

every once in a while in the beginning hed fuck up with me, and shed call him up and bawl him out and then play master of the obvious so i never had to... it was odd. We just talk. very strange after an abusive marriage.

oh and i hear the worst thing you can say to a man is "i love you like a brother."

Only if he's trying to get in your pants.  Otherwise, depending on who, it's a very big honor... if it's true.  If you're blowing smoke then not so much.

694 Heinlein liked to explore the boundaries between morality and ethics. Morality is a constantly changing set of goalposts based on public opinion, whereas ethics is a consistent set of internal rules that one should try and live by regardless of the current fad. They frequently overlap, but there can be significant divergences.

Relative to a given person in a given culture at a given time in history, they have been relatively glacial in terms of change. Most of the modern rapid change in "moral" sensibilities can better be described as the merging of the moral and the political. But it's still a historical exception.

then you may have guessed that i am relentlessly ethical but care little for other peoples standard morality. Mercy, Dignity, and Truth are my guiding principals.

and i really really dont care much for what other people think. I tend to be pragmatic. Maybe i read too much Heinlein and Niven and William Gibson in my formative years. Mentioned the other night i named a filly Molly Millions.

right now im bummed tho. one of my feral kittens, the most tame of the bunch has disappeared. im hoping he shows back up and was just out chasing some pussy.

Mero, I point you towards attitudes about premarital sex, 'bastard' children, curse words in public, porn, abortion, even self reliance changing a lot over the last 60 years. That isn't exactly a geological timeframe for morality.

Yes, I think those can be considered 'moral' arguments.

703 i disagree. you just described Islam and the Holy Roman Empire. Posted by: Gushka goes blue at September 17, 2011 03:02 AM (QNeKQ) Too late, but: No. In modern terms, would you say the push for tolerance of single parenthood, youthful sex, drug culture, thug subculture, etc., initiated as a moral impulse or a political one? Also, Islam is hardly an example of rapid changes in mores.

I see that jimbo is over here now. he got banned from HA a few months back because-if I recall correctly-he was spouting crap about Mrs. Ed Morrisey.
Btw: If  SP decided to run I'll be commenting a lot more over here-because certain 'people' @ HA will be come more more cultist(if that's possible) than they are now.
