Overnight Thread- Dreaded Tax Day Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

Evening Moron Nation! Maet couldn't make it tonight so I'm filling in at the last minute.

I saw this mini-documentary the other day and it's a tremendous look into the life of a strange creature that many of us have known in our lives. Perhaps, some of us have been this creature. Some still are. This creature? Why, it's The Douche. Be afraid, very afraid. (video after the break).

This is an interesting top 10 list. Quite timely with all this budget talk going on. The World's 10 Costliest Militaries.
Military spending among all countries totaled $1.63 trillion last year, but that was up just 1.3% from the year before. Spending includes weapons, soldiers and the cost of maintaining a countryÂ’s military infrastructure.

Do note that Obama's 2012 budget wants to spend THREE times this much in 2012.

Speaking of weapons, this is damn cool. I wonder how Erica the Bow-F*cker would like this? Too small?

Pretty big day on This Day In History. The 1906 SF Earthquake. Paul Revere and William Dawes warn of British Attack in 1775. Chinese students protest government in 1989. Doolittle leads raid on Tokyo. Journalist Ernie Pyle killed at Okinawa. Suicide bomber destroys US Embassy in Beirut. Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier get married.

On this day in 1775, British troops march out of Boston on a mission to confiscate the American arsenal at Concord and to capture Patriot leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock, known to be hiding at Lexington. As the British departed, Boston Patriots Paul Revere and William Dawes set out on horseback from the city to warn Adams and Hancock and rouse the Minutemen.

So, um, you car shop guys. Is this really the secret trick to getting your car to perform better or does this only work on "alternative" cars with "alternative" people?

Man Dressed As Mannequin Arrested In Ladies Room At The Mall. Super freak material here.

Hardman told Birmingham Magistrates' Court he felt "sexual gratification out of everything that goes on in women's toilets".

Anyone want to bet me that his favorite movie is Mannequin?

Random cute dog picture to ease the pain of tax day.

Interesting read. America In The Hands Of A Professional Military.

In light of it being Tax Day, here is 10 Strangest Tax Deductions.

Retired lawyer William G. Halby attempted to claim $113,537 worth of “therapeutic sex,” “massage therapy,” and “pornography in lieu of Viagra” on his 2002 tax return. Halby had been frequenting illegal prostitutes and massage parlors claiming that the services provided were a medical necessity. This creative fellow claimed the sex he had with prostitutes was therapeutic in that frequent orgasms decreased his erectile dysfunction and erotic massages relieved his osteoarthritis.

That's all I got tonight Moron Nation. CDR M signing off.

7 How about a mini long-bow?

China spent the second greatest amount on the military in 2010, and that amount is growing quickly. From 2001 to 2010, the countryÂ’s military expenditures increased 189%. This is more than double the amount spent by any country on this list. Weak economic performance in 2009 kept the 2009-10 increase to only 3.8%. Spending in 2011 will increase by 12.7%, according to the BBC. It should be noted, however, that many analysts believe ChinaÂ’s defense spending is higher than the country reports.

And there's the rub. But I don't think they're working so much to expand their military as to bring it up to technological speed, or to invest in the infrastructure to rapidly produce high-tech weaponry.

Maybe this time they'll successfully conquer Ethiopia within a decade should they try to invade again.

But I was really surprised about that sidebar story showing the UAE was the 3rd largest weapons importer, although I shouldn't have been.  Shows that the ME is taking the Iranian threat seriously, more seriously than our Pretender in Chief.

27 SO I am the local convenience store tonight and there's this big dude talking to the cashier and he asks her if the price of gas is going to come down soon.  She says no.. as a matter of fact, it will be $4 a gallon by next week.  He says .. wow, that's quite a jump.  Then he buys a coke and a pack of smokes and tells her to put the change on pump 5.  The change was $13 and change.  I walk out and see him pumping his $13 worth of gas into a big SUV.  My first thought was (and I am pretty sure this guy voted for THE WON) well you stupid fuck.. guess you better trade that gas guzzler in for something that gets better mileage.  You voted for the asshole.. reap the rewards.

Actually, they were killed on an (unpaved) road that runs between Havelock and Maysville; they were on their way to church in Jacksonville on Sunday morning, and apparently the driver was going too fast and lost control, ending upside down in a ditch filled with water from the previous night's rain. The adults were the children's parents, both 24, a six year old, a two year old, and a four month old.

The funny thing about Cortez -  people often ask how a few hundred Spaniards defeated a whole empire - and they are asking the wrong question.

Because the Aztecs were so brutal, Cortez was able to assemble an army of ten of thousands of men from neighboring tribes (perhaps as many as 200k). Yeah the guy in the weird hat may have wanted your gold...but he didn't want to eat you.

Well, if you want to make sure the jails are full, go ahead and get rid of withholding while keeping the income tax.

And I hear a lot about the flat tax, but it would be political suicide unless accompanied by epicly massive spending cuts.  A massive share of the taxes are currently paid by the top few percent - if that full burden were transferred downward it would be ugly for those of us in the middle.

Show me some spending cuts, and show me an economic recovery based on intelligent policy.  Then I'll be more interested in discussing tax increases.

182 So here is a question. For those morons who have been hiring managers, how much attention to you pay to cover letters?

I have to say when I was hiring people I honestly focused all my attention on the actual resume.

Oh, and in this day an age, how do people send out a resume with typos? I spell check mine about 30 times before I send it to a friend to review, before I spell check it again and send it out...
Posted by: 18-1

I pay attention to both. If the letter looks bad with a bunch of misspellings, then the letters they send out to customers will look the same.

If they don't pay attention to those details that impact them, you can be sure they won't pay attention to the details that impact the company.

How come I always believed the altitude in Kenya made all the difference?

Training at altitude helps too, and a lot of the elite runners train at altitude (Boulder, CO, Bear Lake, CA, etc.).  Ryan Hall lives and trains at altitude.  The elite nike sponsered runners sleep in those altitude simulators.

270

It was an Earth Day run up in St. Cloud. It was below freezing, with snow not on the running paths, but around them. My friend said he had a few snowflakes fall on him. My hands were SO COLD. This was the first time I've had to wear long sleeves and long pants during a run.

I drank water from the cups when they handed them out. I also ate a thing of energy paste that they handed me, which was a mistake, because I couldn't get that crap washed out of my mouth.

In training, I drink a LOT of liquids while running. In every day life I drink a ton of water.

In the future, for a smaller run like that, you might want to carry your own water (there are fuel belts and water bottle belts).  For big races like Grandmas and Twin Cities, you probably wouldn't need to carry your own water.  The Gu/PowerGel is also really good, but you do need to take it with water.  So either hold the packet until you get to a water stop, or again, bring your own water.

When it's cold out, I wear gloves and carry one of those disposable handwarmers in each hand.  (I buy a box of them at Costco in the beginning of winter).  I used them last week at our relay (it was rainy, windy and 40ish, but felt a lot colder at times).

Be sure you are hydrating well for the next several days.  Electrolytes and magnesium will speed up your recovery process.  (I like these electrolyte capsules called "Endurolytes" you can get them on roadrunnersportsdotcom or most biking and running stores).  I use them during a race, hard training run and long run too.  (Follow the instructions on the bottle).  I also use NUUN tablets in my water bottle during the race.  Try and do some walking to help get the lactic acid out.

Bask in your accomplishment!  You did great.  Where did you hang your medal?

As a hiring manager myself, that *is* important, at least in technical positions. Depending on the exact position, some skills are a must have, though for most it is a question of the candidate showing they can learn.

I once asked a candidate about a particular skill she claimed to use at her last job. She responded that she actually hadn't done any of it , someone told her to put it on her resume. Smart cookie that one.

This is a core problem with American education though.

With no metrics, public schools *will* fail to teach anything of importance, and graduate enough illiterates to vote in a full slate of Democrats.

However, getting metrics for education is hard.

Now, offering people a choice in where to send their kids to school would *quickly* resolve this issue...but apparently that is racist or something.

It's just that he's a sweet kid and hasn't been in daycare since he was 48 hours old and is still naive. It totally crushes him when his supposed best friend tells lies about him to get him in trouble.

I know. I feel for him. It breaks my heart when good kids are treated badly because I hate seeing the sweetness slowly seep out of them.

My son's best friend is a little shithead. For example today apparently he punched my son in the stomach for no good reason. But, they've been best friends since the first day of kindergarten so sometimes I have to bite my tongue and let him work it out.

Here's a question for you morons:

Are any of those Canadian on-line pharmacies legit?

I'm not looking for any narcotics. It's a medication that has been sold for decades in the US but like all drugs it had to undergo years of  testing and scrutiny for approval. But since it had been sold in the US for decades without it, it was generally ignored.

Then a couple of years ago the FDA and Congress got a hair up their collective asses and there's now only one US provider. It charges $4.50 per pill for what once cost 45 cents per pill. And that's about what most Canadian online pharmacies charge.

I have no medical insurance I'm  thinking of buying a bottle from Canada just to see if it works.

Any thoughts?

I haven't bought from the online pharmacies but I do buy animal parmas, from vet supplies in Canada, their legit and probably the same for pharmacies. Well, it's illegal (stupidly, perhaps).

The only real disadvantage is that because it's illegal, the people doing it are willing to break the law.

You might get lucky and catch a principled anarchist. More likely you'll catch someone named Mohammed who isn't too worried about his Visa.

The good news is, placebos work almost as often as the real thing.

I also went to Home De-Pot this evening to pick up the TSP and saw a prominent display of Palmolive dish soap next to Fabuloso, after I followed a prominent display if illegals into the store.  I noticed that the Palmolive had a "phosphate free!" blurb on the label (as if that's something to brag about), but the Fabuloso didn't.  They're both made by Colgate-Palmolive.  Think the messican brand gets away with keeping the good stuff in it?  What if it's made in May-heeco?

Also: few weeks ago, The Chicago Code did a very thinly veiled attack on Bill Ayers (crazy former 60s radical becomes respected professor, still likes blowing stuff up and killing cops). Tonight's episode introduced a storyline where the bad guys were the police union. Somewhat Palin-esque, with the outsider taking on the old boys' club of entrenched union interests. I don't go to the movies very much these days, but even at the late-night showings at R-rated movies, I see a great number of little kids in the theater.  I'm sure the parents of those kids are bringing up their children correctly..*rolls eyes*.

/I mean, why the hell would you bring toddlers and infants to see something like Friday the 13th in the theatres?  Couldn't they find a babysitter?

Probably because it's not new. Not saying they don't need to be stopped, or that they aren't blatantly ignoring the constitution, just saying it's not new.

I was very happy when the kids got taken out of Drive Angry... but the mom let them sit through 1 and 1/2 sex scenes before doing the right thing.  Which should have been not bringing the kids in the first place.  Some of it was bad advertising, though - I had no idea how much graphic sex was going to be in the film.  (The violence didn't bother me much)

In either case, if your kid is under, say... 16, don't bring them to an R-rated film.  Hell, even some pg-13 films are bad nowadays.

502 I am from the school of thought (call it defeatist, I just think its painfully realistic) that parents have no control anymore over media after a particular age, and its much younger than they want to believe. They can think they do, they can get suckered into buying worthless internet filters and "turning off the TV", but thanks to the dozens upon dozens of wonderful evil delivery devices, it is totally pointless after probably age 12. Thirteen? Hopefully your parenting was good enough the first dozen years, because the next five will be like pounding your fist into a steel wall- lots of pain and anger for you, not a dent for them. I am from the generation that has totally embraced hyperactive media yet became more cynical because of it. I shiver thinking what will be accessible for my kids.

I do agree with this - that we have larger problems.  But I also do think that if we let our kids just keep going down that road, we'll never be able to fix the problems, since the kids won't take to the solutions.

So decency is just one of the many areas that needs cleanup, but it's also a cornerstone of how people think and act.  Without it, there are no examples of how proper people behave.  Without that, future generations are just savages trained to parrot their masters.

Look at the protests in WI and other places - these are people without decency, who have been propped up by media and culture to believe that they can do no wrong.  Their disgusting behaviour is a result of believing that only they can be right and that whatever action they take, no matter how vile, is the one correct course.

Weird, it's the other way round to me. I think our culture has become so (kratos alert!) decadent, so degraded, since the 60s, our families and churches and other institutions so thoroughly undermined and destroyed, our manners and civility and intellect and values etc etc so irretrievably lost, that the financial doom doesn't bother me that much. even with Ryan in charge and complete fiscal health restored, i still hate my generation and my culture and think it's all gone to hell, so screw it.

My parents brought me up in a time warp.  By 10, I was able to watch current tv and not buy into the crap.  I will admit to not knowing what it's like to grow up under constant attack from the media, as I didn't watch a lot of it.  Today, I still don't watch a lot, since I selectively choose my programs based on how much liberal bullshit I want to handle and how much they give out.

It will be different for my kids, as the attacks are far more blatant nowadays.  At least when I was a child, most of the propaganda went over my head or was so slight I could ignore it and just enjoy the programming.   (plus, most of the programs I watched were from the 50s - with current tv peppered in - can't say that all tv watched until 10 was from the 50s, since I watched a lot of scifi and mystery shows)

513 The EPA has tried to ban lead from bullets, shot and fishing tackle, claiming that it harms the environment--even when absolutely NO EVIDENCE EXISTS to support this claim.>>> I learned this weekend that at a local range family goes to has learned to beat the system, in a way. Seems that the EPA has a habit of visiting gun ranges, doing "soil testing" and finding "lead contamination." If they don't get cleanup services from an approved contractor, they get shut down. Seems this place has a new system in place, somehow uses running water to capture rounds sent downrange. So once they empty the containment, and dispose of the lead, no environmental problems.

And by the way, don't you want to be rich?  and Rule?  No?  'cause apparently, it's now a dire sin to be "rich."  Or to want to be "rich."

If by "Rich," they mean "elite," well, then.  We've got that going on according to the "rules" right now.  Why wait?

557 I had a pager! Not a cool one, just a plain one. But it was cool to have one. That had to be one of the lamest trends. People could call me but I had to find a phone to call them back.

I convinced my parents to get me a phone because we had a bomb scare at school and worked the safety angle. Now I feel naked without my phone.

That's awesome!  My parents had a text pager for a little while for their business - we would call a message service and they'd send it over to the device.  "Hi Steve, can you tell my mom to call us?"  (or other, sillier things - I was maybe 6 at the time... )

yeah.  It was pretty cool.

I'm betting that land lines won't last very long into the future as contant-contact devices.  Most people will move to mobile phones (if not already) just for the ease of carrying the phone around from location to location.

I'm glad they allow you to keep your number from phone to phone.  Remember when you couldn't do that?

I still like having a landline for a couple of reasons. 1) I get sucky reception where I live on my cell so having a landline is handy for not having calls dropped and 2) if I have to wait on hold for a long time, I'd rather do it on a landline so I don't drain my phone battery.

I'm glad they allow you to keep your number from phone to phone.  Remember when you couldn't do that?

Yes! I had to give up my very first cell number (I don't even remember what it was now) when I switched carriers. Now I'm really partial to this phone number since I've had it for 10 years now...

559 SiM - so he is using his various agencies and Executive order privileges to chip away at our freedoms, little by little.   --  OK, added to my list for an Article 5 convention; all EO and regulatory policies have a sunset provision, maybe no longer then the conclusion of the next session of Congress.

Exactly why I like my landline.  Also, you can always give out that number to people and screen them that way, rather than giving them access to your more personal number.

My phone number is only one digit off from my mom's and we've had them for years.  I'd hate to give it up now.  It's providing a dilemma with the tablets out there - you basically would have to give up your number, as far as I can tell, since I haven't found any information supporting using a cell number as a VOIP number.  /sigh

563 I find it funny that I wanted a personal landline so badly when I was a teenager because having a phone in my room *and* my own line was the height of cool. It actually took me a couple of years to realize that my cell phone was essentially that. Almost no one calls me on the landline except family or friends who know my cell reception sucks and couldn't reach me on it.

The worst part of having a landline and a cell phone?

People who call your cell phone, then your landline when you don't answer because you can't find the damn thing, then your cell phone again.

Yeah, but you can get a cheap landline nowadays - and then there's the bundling crap that saves a tiny amount (but not really 'cause they get you on the fees...).

Ya the state is adding a fee on our's so they can provide fast internet to the boonies, it's all about the supposed victims of slow intratubes.. I have only a land line but its also my dsl..

568 /facepalm

Jan Brewer.  G-d.

I didn't like her when she raised our taxes.  Now she's vetoing bills because she doesn't want to piss off the educators (which is why she supported raising our sales tax...).

Argh.

And yeah, I'm a little pissed that she vetoed the so-called "birther" bill.  But not as much as the guns on campus bill.

570 Yeah.  I was glad to get rid of Napolitano, but not to get Brewer in her place.  Could tell that she really wasn't for us when she started shilling the "It's for the children!" bullshit.

When she got all the attention for "standing up" to iWon, I wasn't fooled.  She had her little meeting and it all went away.  Now we're spinning our wheels while the courts dump all over us.

It's depressing.  I can only hope that someone GOOD challenges her in the next election.  I want her dumped out.

It'll never happen.  This state kept voting in Napo and McCain... they'll vote in Brewer or worse.

576 The best thing about a land line is you leave it at home, it never needs charging, and it'll never explode or catch fire in your pocket.

I don't have a cell phone, and have no desire for one.  Some people think I'm crazy, but I really do value privacy and the ability to not be intruded upon.

577 No cell for me either PA, one phone ringing is plenty thank you enough..
I like being able to listen to the message before I answer and any that I want to talk to I tell let it ring a couple hang up and call again..
