— Open Blogger Evenin' morons! It's another fine Saturday and it is my honor to entertain you morons so go get a cold one and stand the hell by for some typical ONT links, videos and, well, just some silliness and mind blowing information.
Now last Saturday we had a nice graphical math equation. Tonight we'll do a little geometry but I imagine it will frustrate you more than make you laugh as the last one did. I know it did for me for a little while before the CFL came on. Don't worry, I've been told the President still hasn't figured this one out.

Now for a little musical intro:
Now I'm sure some of you have noted that this ONT is the Devil Dog edition. I decided to name it that as I saw some kick ass video of a documentary on some Marines that was filmed last year in Afghanistan.
Operation Mushtaraq was massive news all over the world when it happened. But only one journalist was with the Marines inside Marjah. Ben Anderson spent two months with Bravo Company 1/6 Marines, eating, sleeping, running and sweating alongside them every step of the way.
The access he achieved and the 50 hours of battle footage he obtained is intimate and unprecedented and forms the basis of this extraordinary film. The result is unlike any other war documentary: personal, intense, incredibly close-up and dangerous.
Bravo Company was the first and only platoon dropped into the centre of Marjah. These young Marines found themselves in a maze of IEDs, bunkers, trenches and ambushes, set by very well-trained fighters.
Video Part 1:
Video Part 2:
Well done Marines. Semper Fi.

Tomorrow is the Super Bowl and I don't have a dog in this fight so it should at least be a damn entertaining one. I think GB is gonna win. Of course, it helps to know that Obama has decided to bring his blessing of doom and curse the Steelers! Well, maybe not an out and out endorsement as he did for the Steelers against the Cardinals, but you know he and Rooney are good buds so it stands to reason that Obama IS rooting for the Steelers. That's your boy Rooney! Now here's a little trivia test for y'all. How well do you know stuff about Pittsburgh or Green Bay?
Your Obligatory Dog Video:

Now I really don't get what the big deal on this is but the Huffington Post sure hates it. Chyron of the Day: Boobs.
Oh, that's right. It's Caturday right? Well this video is an extra special treat for you Caturdayians. Those Brits are so damn clever. I present, Single White Feline.

This is one strange site but here you can get your very own unicorn (well before the one Obama promised you). You'll have to add your own Skittles though. This artist takes real animal parts and then puts them together to create strange and or mythical creatures. Like the two-headed Chernobyl chicken or a Griffin. I could see Kratos getting a Griffin.
Whoa. Talk about when headlines go bad!
R2-D2 is a little pimp daddy! Those have got to be GE models. They'll shack up with anyone (see GE CEO and the White House)

Was This Really Necessary? Katy Perry's cover on Rolling Stone photoshopped.
Heh. Funny Protest Pic of the Day.

In movie news, it would seem there will be a Die Hard 5, maybe. Working title so far is Die Hard 24/7. And it will feature another Gruber family member. So who should play the next Gruber bad guy? Or will it be a woman this time?
Awesome! 10 Foods You Can Make In A Coffee Maker. I don't know about cookin' chicken in something you are gonna make coffee out of later.

Revolving Shotgun Built From Scratch. Awesome. I want one!
Caturday bonus picture:

Why the F*&$ aren't we building more nuke plants? It seems the Nuclear Renaissance died in 2008. Hmmm, right around Obama showed up. We need to push hard on this. The freakin' Chinese are beating us at this and judging by the number of stories of rolling blackouts, it's something we could use NOW. Just wait until all those electric cars start plugging in. Good times.
Almost forgot, but it's time for name this classic Hollywood starlet!

Well moron nation, that's all I got tonight. Gotta get back to work. Drink up and commence the commentary!
Tonight's ONT brought to you by:

The triangle thingy:
Move the light green area to the right 3 spaces, then up 1. You should then see why the hole appears. There are only 2 light green squares jutting out to the left, but 3 squares to fill to adjoin the yellow.

If you move the top line of the triangle 1/12 of a square upward, over a width of about 13 squares, you're going to end up with an increase in area of about a square.

Sarah Palin, in her first comments on the uprising in Egypt, called the situation President Barack Obama’s 3 a.m. phone call and said, “It seems the call went right to the answering machine.”
Why is everyone else so afraid to call out Barry's skinny a$$?
via WZ
Posted by: RushBabe at February 05, 2011 06:06 PM (urYpw)
Putting the two triangles right next to each other on graph paper makes it too obvious. For each vertical gridline, the upper triangle's top (the hypotenuse) hits a smidge lower than the corresponding gridline on the lower triangle. For instance, look at the fifth vertical line from the right -- where, on the top triangle, all the pieces come together. On the top triangle, it looks like it's right at the second gridline down from the peak. On the bottom, it's about 1-5/6 gridlines down from the top.
If you move the top line of the triangle 1/12 of a square upward, over a width of about 13 squares, you're going to end up with an increase in area of about a square.
totally man.

If I didn't have an annual pass, I doubt I would go more than 2 or 3 times a year. It does take away some of the urgency in trying to get on *all* the rides so you can just slow down and take everything in. Plus I've learned/discovered/seen things I'd never have taken the time to see/do if I was only there for a day.

runningrn, one thing I noted in that second video is how inept the Afghani forces were. Granted this video is nearly a year old but man, there is no way those guys are ready to take over after we leave yet.
That was truly frightening. Not only inept, but totally chicken ass. I was yelling at them as we watched it "You jackoffs! This is your fricking country! We are spilling our blood and treasure for you asswipes and you can't even function because you're so scared and so incompetent."
Next to the Marines, that kid was the smartest person in the vids. I get the feeling he could go either way.

I tell my kids all the time that my prime goal in life is never, ever to go to Disneyworld/land/etc.
They tell me how lucky I am to have achieved my prime goal in live at such a relatively young age
And I agree.
Then my mother will say "You have to take the kids to Disney" and I say "Why - you never took me" and then peaceful silence.
I salute you.

I just finished adapting a story my daughter wrote into a screenplay. It's about... the Solar System being destroyed by passing through an interstellar cloud. (The sole survivor is one woman who heads to the edge of the Universe to find out if God is there and, if so, if He's willing to take questions.)

OMG!! That is so funny you mentioned that. I have a picture of me that was taken there when I was sweet 16. It was buried in many other pictures of my past until one day a few years ago, I saw it downstairs on my daughters dresser. I said "where did you find that?" she said she was looking thru some old pics and found that one of me when I was a kid and wanted it, so she took it and framed it. Then my son wanted a copy, so just last week I finally took it and got it copied. I remember that trip to Story Land like it was yesterday! And believe me, it's been DECADES! Wow... oh I wish I could relate that entire summer to you guys. It was the most amazing summer of my life. Good and bad.

Yup, he and that Ghurka guy couldn't share a beer at the same table. There would be no room for their balls.
It was amazing to me that the Americans had to tell the Afghanis to move out quick, get against the wall and get down.
After watching that, I am in awe. The captain that had requested something be done that resulted in the death of someone obeying his order, the speech that he gave before they went in, the fact that no one was bitching or whining about the job they had to do. I was struck by the thought that each one of these guys is loved by people. They are someone's father, brother, child, husband, etc. I can't imagine the sacrifice that our military members and their families make every day. I am truly humbled.

Jewells45 - happy to tell you Storyland is still open. Although the Morrell family no longer run it - I think it was bought by a Chinese company (figures) - still a pretty family friendly place. The old section you might remember the Old Lady In The Shoe, Heidi's grandfather, Cinderella and the pumpkin coach area all still there as well as some newer updated areas. Admission is still pretty reasonable and you can bring in your own food. When the Morrell's ran it the food was better and cheaper. We haven't missed a year since our oldest was a year old. Glad you have happy memories of NH!!
Damn, I can't tell you how this has made my day!! I just googled it, yeah sure enough it's still there. I can't tell from the background in my picture where I am, but I do recall the section you mentioned. I went there with my cousin and her husband and kids. I was going thru a tough time at home and spent the summer with another cousin and then with her. Eventually came back home and married my asshole first husband and had my daughter. Lots of things transpired between then and now... oh my I am overwhelmed with memories right now.

If you overlay the triangles, the hypotenuses actually form a parallelogram whose area is exactly 1. If the left corner is at (0,0), the other three points are at (8,3) (the red triangle's top), (13,5) (overall triangle's top) and (5,2) (green triangle's top). The cross product of the two sides (0,0)-(8,3) and (0,0)-(5,2) gives the area of the parallelogram: 8*2 - 5*3 = 1.
We may be morons, but we're far better than the Obama administration... we don't have to make shit up to explain apparent holes in our numbers.
Posted by: Snowy Owl at February 05, 2011 07:03 PM (Kn0ng)
The hypotenuse is not a straight line, it's angled slightly. One is convex, the other concave. The difference equals one square.
Use a straightedge on your screen to see.

That Marine Corps video is absolutely disgusting. Watching our fighting men forced to passively watch as Taliban fighters take up positions all around them? Marines should be forcing the enemy to react to them, not the other way around. Obama's "courageous restraint" amounts to nothing more than "let the enemy take the first shot." It puts bullseyes on America's best, for no good reason.
About those Afghan fighters; disgraceful fucking pussies. Surrounded by real men, and they still can't nut up and do the damned job. Good to see our guys were forcing them to the front. I wouldn't want any of them at my back.
America needs a real Commander in Chief, not this pantywaist Communist pretender. God help this nation, and God be with our Soldiers.

How does that e-cig work? What are you inhaling and exhaling?
It's only nicotine, not the tar and chemicals in real cigarettes. It's a battery, an atomizer and cartridge/filter. What you exhale is only water vapor. You still get the "hit" in the throat like a real cigarette.

The kid had a serious drug problem for years, cleaned up and just got married. Apparently he wasn't totally out of the drug scene cause he was sitting in a parking lot of a school in the middle of a snow storm (probably waiting for a drug deal). Cop comes by, orders him out of the car and the kid runs, cop catches him but drops his gun, kid gets the cop in a headlock, cop gets gun kills kid. So friggin sad for his parents. Cop is ok, thank God.

I used to live in Placerita Canyon, before I went to college -- and beat feet to get out of there as soon as I could. I've seen it 127 degrees, our neighbor's house partially burned down, the dry wash in the back took out horse corrals and 30' of our neighbor's backyard when it turned into a wet wash, and the morning I left for college my car was covered with fine grey ash from a brushfire. One of our dogs freaked out on July 4th and probably ended up in an oil sump -- another one was hit and killed on Placerita Canyon Road. Somehow, "Mickey Mouse Club" and resort living are not what I'd associate with the place.

The cop caught him and they got into a violent struggle. The kid's only about 5'8", but he's strong. He was probably afraid that one more conviction would send him to jail for a long time and just ran.
My kid had been driving him to apprentice school (which I didn't know) he had cracked up his car. He was 26. The whole family is very troubled, 5 kids in the family. One daughter hung herself, now this and 2 more daughters are knocked up numerous times by many guys. The only smart daughter joined the army and got the hell out. She's stationed in Alaska.

Yeah, i didn't mean to be glib, it's a shame a kid(i'm assuming under 30) was killed and I'm sure the cop didn't start his day wanting to kill someone.
However, I was under the impression that if you get caught with drugs near a school, or in a school zone, that the penalties are much higher, kinda like speeding in a designated work zone.
If you're going to buy drugs, it seems to be that a school parking lot is slightly better than do it in a police station parking lot, but not by much.

Look at the slopes of the two sub-triangles (cyan and red) .
They are different! (2/5 vs 3/
So the hypotenuse isn't a straight line. It's not curved, but Merovign's (and others') overall point is correct: it's composed of two line segments. So neither overall figure is a right triangle.
The hypoteneuse of a 5 x 13 right triangle should be about 13.9 in.
Its area should be (5 x 13) /2 = 32.5 sq units.
Try lining a straight edge along the top figure's hypoteneuse from corner to corner, and pivoting it around the top right corner.
You'll see it goes past 14 units, to about 14.3.
Reverse Pythagoras and the base for a right triangle with a 5 height and a 14.3 hypoteneuse, and you get a base of 13.4 units. The area of a right triangle with a 13.4 base and 5 height is 33.5 sq units.
33.5 minus 32.5 and.... Voila! one "missing" square unit.
By swapping the positions of the cyan and red triangles, the flatter slope of the latter appears to "open" up the area that their original positions hid.
(Note further that the top figure actually has an area of 8 + 7 + (5 x 2)/2 + (8 x 3)/2 = 32. But the puzzle maker tricked us into "accepting" the 13 x 5 = 32.5 dimensions )
First time in decades since I used the square root function on a desk calculator!

I think that's true. But it still doesn't deter drug deals, much like having a "gun-free" zone x-distance from a school doesn't prevent guns from showing up in school lockers.

We prefer an old fashioned story problem with two trains: an Amatrak leaves DE for D.C. at 3 p.m. traveling 50 mph. while an high speed train leaves CA for Las Vegas at 9 p.m. traveling at 388 mph. At what time will the two trains meet at Topeka, and which train will be carrying Joe's stash? Extra credit if you can determine who's the conductor.

All of Frank Lloyd Wrong's buildings have problems. An architecture student told me a story about him: an exec telephoned Wrong to complain that the roof of a building Wrong designed was leaking, and water was dripping on his desk. Wrong told him to move the desk. Might be true, but I won't vouch for it.
I once went to a conference at the Univ. of Chicago. In the midst of a lot of nice Victorian homes near the campus is one of Wrong's famous houses. The Victorians are tall, with a lot of vertical lines. The Wrong house is an ugly squat thing, emphasizing horizontal lines, with few visible windows. The Victorians look like they're reaching for the sky, the Wrong building looks like if is afraid of the sky.

Well, at least the cop won that one. A fellow officer back in '95 was shot by a 14 year old Vietnamese gang-banger he had chased after the kid ran from a stolen car. He died in my fucking arms.
Sam, I am sorry to hear that. I imagine the passage of time hasn't dulled the horror of that moment all that much.
I hate it when the good guys are the ones to die. I think all cops should be allowed to just shoot the guy who runs so they don't have to put themselves in danger to stop them. Yea, not realistic, but still.
That must have been rough on you. Were you an EMT?

I once went to a conference at the Univ. of Chicago. In the midst of a lot of nice Victorian homes near the campus is one of Wrong's famous houses. The Victorians are tall, with a lot of vertical lines. The Wrong house is an ugly squat thing, emphasizing horizontal lines, with few visible windows. The Victorians look like they're reaching for the sky, the Wrong building looks like if is afraid of the sky.
The Robie or Robey House. I've been there. When hubby and I did Chicago Marathon a few years ago, we went and saw that. I thought it was kind of cool.
F.L. Wright's personal life was a nightmare. I think he left his one wife, married another chick, they had a bunch of kids and some of them and that wife, I think were murdered by a knife wielding crazy servant (if I recall correctly, too lazy to look it up). He was a serial philanderer.

I drove through Stamford a couple years ago and was surprised how much it reminded me of LA.
Stamford's way too close to New York to ever be considered a normal town. I'm just thankful it's on the other end of the state.
You might be close to insulting LA.

No, I was a city cop and he was a Sheriffs officer who chased the kid into the city limits. I went there to back him but didn't get to him in time. He was shot in the upper right shoulder and the bullet traveled down into his aorta. His last words were, "I'm going to fuckin' die aren't I?" The kid got a life sentence as an adult so that was some small consolation.

OK, Rum, the latest Disney PSA that is bugging me, the "TTI" where the kid is 14 and has climbed all 7 of the highest peaks already--yes, even Everest. OK, seriously who the efffffff are these kids that have the kind of money that they can do this stuff? It is not cheap to climb mountains, especially not the highest peaks. The equipment is hella expensive, not to mention the airfare, paying for the guides, having to stay in the area for a while before starting the climb in order to adjust your body to the altitude, etc.
My boy just snarked at the PSA, I'm so proud.

I had a normal professional relaxing massage last week by a massage professional who was kind of a hippie chick in her mid-fifties. She had me naked and actually massaged my bare buttocks. I've only had one other professional massage before and that girl made me wear my underwear. I'm just curious, is that standard procedures from a professional masseuse? Don't get me wrong, I didn't feel like a victim and it sure as hell didn't turn into a sex thing since my wife also used this chick. I was just wondering, is it appropriate for a man to get a professional massage from a chick while he is completely naked?

Math trick? LOL, the blank space came from the red section which was moved and made smaller.
On the Nukes I had not heard that Duke and Progress had shelved their plans for the new plants. The "insurance" program they are talking about is the government guaranteeing delays caused by intervenor litigation. Those delays cost millions of dollars a day in increased financing costs. It had become a huge tactic of the no-nukenick assholes to string one frivolous suit after another to cause delays. I suspect what "congress" may want to do reform the litigation rules. That is what needs to happen but will not as long as the Dems are in power.
And the mystery babe, I see you have wised up and fixed it where you can't cheat.

As a matter of fact, the river is most likely clean as a whistle. What I found a few years ago when I was investigating the status of NC and SC "pollution" is the absolute fraud the EPA uses in calling a river polluted.
They demand that local government test for all kinds of "pollutants" on a regular and frequent basis AND the State and local government must pay for those tests. Think about routine testing of thousands of rivers, streams, and lakes throughout the States. So of course the States refuse to conduct the tests and the courts have ruled that the EPA can not force them to perform the tests. So as punishment the EPA classifies these bodies of water as "polluted" because they haven't had the demanded tests.
Note that State agencies like DEHEC do run tests but not ALL that the stupid EPA wants. This is another reason that the EPA needs to be defunded and killed.
As for what they are screaming for in taking over the Yatkin river dams above, pure communism at work there.

More fallout on the redistricting mess
Here is what happens as "unintended consequences" of the stupid liberal court rulings on the Unconstitutional Title V of the VRA.Because the courts have ruled that districts must be gerrymandered in SC and NC to produce black majority districts the "white" Democrat has all but disappeared in SC.
The few that are left that they are talking about in the article are in areas that do have a lot of blacks and elderly yellow dog voters. Those elderly voters there have a habit of dieing out.
I am more and more expecting a fight with the DOJ over redistricting in SC.

What in the world does operation of a dam have to do with pollution? Ans: NOTHING
The article implies that low dissolved oxygen levels = polluted. They just figure everybody is stupid.
Posted by: Ed Anger at February 06, 2011 01:40 AM (7+pP9)
Shit they don't even have to invoke a "taking" to grab a dam. All they have to do is refuse to renew the "license" to operate the dam.
This is why I am simply astounded at all the people who constantly harp about the need to "license" some activity they have a hard on for.
At the turn of the century in the U.S. there were not many things that required a "license". I don't even think that doctors had to be licensed at the time.
Now it is the exact opposite. There are not many things that you can do without a license.
Posted by: Vic at February 06, 2011 01:41 AM (M9Ie6)
LOL, they are not even saying there are low O2 levels, only that Alcoa had withheld information on the application.
IOW just like I have been saying about regulators for a long time. They are paper auditors, in this case a lack of "paper" is being used as a hammer.

Here is the other thing that has become totally screwed up since the turn of the century
The lawyers have succeeded in getting all the States into the "shared liability" scam. You would think that the title would imply that groups who are at fault would share in payment of damages. Hahahahaha A truer name would be "deep pockets" liability since the laws are written so that of you have a tiny portion of any liability you can be forced to pay 100%+ of the damages.
In this case a drunk boater crashes into another boater killing two young girls and severly injuring two others, leaves the scene of the accident so he can get rid of evidence. So who are the lawyers going after?
A bar who may have served him a few drinks (note that it appears that almost all of his drinking was done on the boat) and the father of the drunk who owned the boat (insurance company).
What would have happened 100 years ago? The locals would have strung the guy up and a that would have been the end of it.
In any case, what will happen is the insurance companies will settle out of court, the lawyers will make a shit-ton of money, the parents of the girls will be out a couple of daughters and they will get a few measly dollars, everyone else's insurance rates will go up to pay for the lawyers, and the drunk????
In a year or so he will go to trial and unless he cops a plea (not likely in this case) he will get 25 - 50 years in jail (4 felony counts here).
So who gets served? The lawyers who, incidentally, make the laws.

The simplest way to solve the top puzzle is to compare the two triangles.
The green one has sides of 2 and 5 forming the 90 degree angle.
The red one has sides of 3 and 8 forming the 90 degree angle.
For the red triangle to be the same shape as the green one it should have sides of 3 and 7.5.
They are close enough, however, to fool the eye. Using the law of sines, the most acute angle of the green triangle is 21.801 degrees. The most acute angle of the red triangle is 20.556 degrees. The difference between the two triangles is a mere 1.245 degrees.

Unless you're an illegal, then you can do anything without a license ... until you have a kid here, at which point we slap a license of citizenship right on the kid and allow the illegal parents to continue on in their unlicensed (and unwelcome) stay in our country.
Posted by: iknowtheleft at February 06, 2011 02:51 AM (N49h9)
Green triangle:
22*52 = 29
sqrt 29 = 5.385
5.385/sin 90 = 2/sin x
sin 90 = 1
cross multiply and divide and we get
2/5.385 = sin x = sin 21.801 degrees
Red triangle:
32*82 = 73
sqrt 73 = 8.544
8.544/sin 90 = 3/sin x
sin 90 = 1
cross multiply and divide and we get
3/8.544 = sin x = sin 20.556 degrees
Checking the remaining angle using the law of sines and adding all 3 angles together gives us 179.999 degrees for each triangle (one must always do that as a check), which is close enough.
†You'll get slightly different results rounding to only three decimal places.

Just looking at the triangles and in the top configuration the two block segments are arranged to equal 15 sq. units. In the bottom lay out they arranged to equal 16 sq units. The area of both triangles remains the same. There is no loss or gain.

Count five squares back from the tip on both pictures, and then count up. On one picture, the top line is two and a fraction squares up. On the other, the top line is slightly less than two squares up.
That difference in angle is where the missing square is hiding. Just because the blocks are the same color, does not mean the one in picture one are exactly the same shape as the ones in picture two.
The just look the same. If you could pick them up and put then against each other in your hands, the edges of the supposedly identical shapes would not match.

The U.S. has to get out of the business of relying exclusively on the private sector to build new nuclear reactors. In the rest of the world, the capital requirements have driven governments to create quasi-government corporations.
