Top 10 Products You Don't Need To Buy (Cuz You Already Own Them)
Well, in light of this supper crappy Obama economy, one needs to save as much money as they can and this list could possibly help out in that regard. Here's your Top 10 Products You Don't Need To Buy, Just Use Something Else That You Already Own.
Skip the harmful Drano, and just grab some baking soda for stubborn drain clogs. If your toilets a little backed up, some laundry detergent can do wonders. If the above products need a little help, you can get in there yourself with a cable tie or duct tape to get the pipes flowing freely again.
Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't the laundry detergent need some phosphorous to be effective in this regard? BTW, mixing baking soda and water into a paste and using that to clean your floor grout works very well. Baking soda is great on crab grass too. At least if you have St. Augustine grass. It hurts fescue grass so not an option there.

New OMB Directive Cuts Defense Beyond Budget Cut Agreement
Figures. The DoD is a magnet for any and all budget cuts. Nobody else in government. Any bets on what government agencies will get exemptions?
Unless your agency has been given explicit direction otherwise by OMB, your overall agency request for 2013 should be at least 5 percent below your 2011 enacted discretionary appropriation. As discussed at the recent Cabinet meetings, your 2013 budget submission should also identify additional discretionary funding reductions that would bring your request to a level that is at least 10 percent below your 2011 enacted discretionary appropriation.

Married People Live Longer
Hmmmm. Being Single May Be Harmful To Your Life Expectancy. So married folk may live longer, but are they having more fun than the single folks?
The researchers found the risk of death was 32 percent higher across a lifetime for single men compared to married men. Single women face a 23 percent higher mortality risk, compared to married women.

Green Powered Navy?
Why the hell is the Navy doing this crap? Information Dissemination covered alternative energy here.
The Navy currently buys biofuel from a company called Solazyme, which produces biomass by cooking it. While these are R&D contracts and consist of more than just the fuel, the Navy is still probably paying somewhere between $50 - $150 a gallon for biofuel with these early contracts. For me, I still don't see how a company that has such high costs to cook biomass in a lab is ever going to be competitive on the market, but right now Solazyme is one of the few companies that can produce relatively large quantities of biofuels reliably, so they are getting all the early testing and R&D contracts. Good for them.
Good God. $50-$150 A GALLON??? Here's my first recommended budget cut for the DoD. Now read this piece over at Eagle Speak. I think I agree with his analysis vice Galrahn's. This algae stuff may work but it's not the role of the military to do this. Am I to believe that I'm about to give up my retirement plan to save shit like this?

In the mine field scene of Kelly's Heroes (which is on the Military Channel right now), why in hell don't the Americans toss grenades at the Germans while they (the Germs) are still in their vehicles? They would've gotten a helluva lot more of them at one shot that way.

AGW either is or isn't...and if you allow that it's man-made, then you have rhetorically lost, because eventually you will have to defend doing nothing about something.
And, it appears Cannon is moving left, not right in his rhetoric and actions.
I'll admit, I've been skeptical of him from the beginning, as a national candidate. But, Ace and some others here really seem to like him, so I'm trying to be rational.
But, I'm still underwhelmed, at best and this type of stuff gives me greater pause.
And, lots of people are pushing for him to run.

Good evening.
Someone say something funny.
Nope, it doesn't work that way. You can't try to be funny, it just happens naturally. Ace is the funniest person on the planet and can tell you all about what is and isn't funny. Anything to do with race isn't funny, for example, unless you're making fun of white people. You can refer to hobos, which are funny, as long as they are assumed to be white hobos and not black.
Pickles are funny. Cucumbers are funny, too. Carrots aren't funny.
Another "funny" thing to do is just post "I like pie" and see how people respond to it. These responses often fall into the category of funny comments.

I always had a more basic question. They all walk into a muddy minefield, then one blows up. Why not turn around and walk out in their foot prints, since those obviously didn't step on a mine.
Also, everyone except 2 of them are out of the mine field, why not turn and high tail it out the way you came in, rather than lie there and get shot at.
I hate illogical plot devices.

Yes, we're always yelling at the screen during that entire scene. I certainly would've taken my chances and gone back the other way to the high grass if I were those two guys.
Still, a great movie. My Comcast guide only gives it two stars which is unfriggin' believable.
We saw Incredible Journey today - the 1963 version, a favorite from my childhood. Man, they must have had very different rules for working with animals back then. They toss that Siamese cat into the rapids AND have it get chased by (and fight with) a Lynx. 'Must've gone through about a dozen cats to make that movie!

Gee, a guy at NRO quoted a review panning it.
Here are a couple of excerpts:
Saw Conan the Barbarian last night. Revoltingly stupid, incomprehensibly plotted and edited, and overflowing with the kind of quasi-erotic torture porn (seemingly pulled wholesale out of a serial killerÂ’s wet dreams) thatÂ’s become a staple of both fantasy literature and Hollywood films this century. Easily one of the worst films IÂ’ve seen during decades of painfully slumming through mediocre genre fare
And, even better:
the audience I saw the movie with seemed to have cheerfully low expectations, yet even they didnÂ’t so much leave the theater as recoil from it. YouÂ’ve been warned.

He's funny in a bit part or when he's in an ensemble comedic cast. Like I find him funny in Jay and Silent Bob where he's a minor role and Old School where he's a main guy but the movie doesn't rely solely on him. Anchorman again he's the main guy but there's still 4 other guys lending their comedic chops as well as Christina Applegate to break up his screen time. Talledega Nights its really just him and his unfunny partner and it just blows.

At 7:50AM, Jeff and two other inmates were brought in to clean the prison gymnasium. Twenty minutes later, guards found Dahmer and one of the other inmates beaten severely, and one hour and one minute later, Dahmer was pronounced dead. He was beaten to death by another inmate, 25 year old Christopher Scarver. Dahmer's head was destroyed with a broom handle, then smashed against the floor and wall. There was blood everywhere. He died en route to the local Divine Savior Hospital. The other inmate was in critical condition.

He's less white, more black with the brown as the undercoat, though he still has spots of brown too and his ears and the top of his head are brown. He still has a white patch on his back in the shape of a t-bone steak. I didn't think it was possible but his ears have gotten even softer.

I was at a talk by Paul Maritz this week (Former Microsoft exec, now CEO of VMWare). He was talking about the changes in information cognition, and why social media has changed it. The basic point was that we, as consumers of information are now processing information streams rather than documents.
This got me thinking about blogs, and why some are popular with people showing decided preference for one over another. The basic information stream is the same. All of the blogs (and other information sources, like newspapers) operate from the same initial information source. But then that stream of information is reprocessed through multiple filters with micro content added along the way.
Event X occurs. This spawns a single headline on Drudge. It spawns a headline with a snarky comment here. It spawns a front page post with some light analysis by a co-blogger. It spawns one of Ace's novels. Someone at HotAir will post a short commentary. Weasel Zippers will post a picture with one line of commentary. Someone on the Corner will write a book relating the X back to some 1930s historical event. Someone at RedState will use it to prove that once again the House leadership is stupid/sellouts. Huffpo will use it as proof that the Tea Party are terrorists.
The fascinating thing is that we will consume the same information stream multiple times, reprocessing it with the additional content to provide context and deeper meaning.
So why do we do this, and why do we go to some sites and not others? I think that cultural (using the word very loosely) affinity is the organizing factor. We naturally want to receive additional context for an event, and we seek it out from others to which we feel culturally attuned. Some of us (not me) will also seek out alternative views from sites which are antithetical to our cultural preferences as a way of reinforcing our interpretation of the information stream. Such as going to HuffPo to laugh at the liberal gnashing of teeth when something bad happens (in their opinion).
Anyway, just a theory I'm kicking around.

Many of us in adolescence and teenage years received paper savings bonds as gifts from relatives. They were an easy way to help kids plan for college, getting married, or buying a first house, and most relatives could afford the $25-100 denominations of E/EE bonds.
Recently, the treasury has announced that they will cease selling paper savings bonds in January 2012; after that all bonds will be electronic.

This month's Wired magazine is all about the amazing new LED lightbulbs. Apparently they will change the way I see the world.
Thankfully a local store had a sale on incandescent light bulbs so I stocked up. Wired magazine can sit on their LED lightbulbs and rotate.
Posted by: ParanoidStillAGirlInSeattle at August 20, 2011 11:17 PM (RZ8pf)
They're still to f'n expensive, but we are switching up from 4" to 6" wafers in an effort to increase yield and decrease cost. When we can get an LED bulb to market for around $5 per they will sell, and they are actually pretty good bulbs but you can't use them in dimmer circuits. IMO they are selling these all wrong, though, they should be pushing the fact that you can save $$$ on your light bill, fck all that green PC bullshit.

It sounds like the 5% cut is from the debt deal and he states that the "additional funding reductions" that would be 10% below FY 2011 levels were discussed at recent Cabinet meetings (not sure where they get 10%). But they can only enact what was agreed-to by the Congress. Presidential budgets matter when the president holds both houses of Congress and in CBO scoring, but outside of the former, they are only suggestions. So in this memo, Dr. Lew is directing the department heads on the budget resolution that they must submit in February per the 1974 Budget Act.
"The PresidentÂ’s Budget Submission. The President submits a comprehensive budget request to Congress in early February which outlines the AdministrationÂ’s policy and funding priorities and the economic outlook for the coming fiscal year. This budget, which estimates spending, revenue and borrowing levels, is compiled by OMB from input by the various federal agencies, with funding broken down into 20 budget function categories."

The original comment was referring to LEDs, which don't contain mercury. You're quite right that the compact fluorescents suck out loud. They're terrible. The only upside is that they last a long time, so they're good for spots where lights are a bitch to change, but for reading, working, and most other activities in life, they're awful. Save the Earf! though.

Like I said, it depends on the ones you get. The GE bulbs suck balls, their LEDs are more blue than white. The TESSco bulbs are brighter white but expensive. I have a pair of the TESSco bulbs in my kitchen and they do as well as a pair of 40 watt bulbs for 7 watts apiece. They were 45 dollar bulbs though.

I wish I knew the basis of the 10%. Since the joint select committee has not yet held a meeting, the Administration cannot be sure of the amount of the sequester-- if there is to actually be a sequester, that is. As for the budgeting process, I was incredibly happy to hear that the House Budget Committee will be looking at it more fully. It is about time they finally overhauled it.

I haven't really sat down to figure it yet, but we're working on reducing the cost. When we can increase the yield and reduce the cost to around 5 bucks a bulb we won't be able to keep them on the shelves.
And yes, they are directional, which is why the bulbs you see have this big heat sink at the "top" and are designed to be used in downlight fixtures. They do a pretty good job of that though, like I said I have them in the kitchen and they throw as much unidirectional light as a pair of 40 watt bulbs would in the same application. They wouldn't be so good in a table lamp. Their light pattern is more hemispherical.

Those cheap-shit on-board transformers, with itty bitty printed circuit boards, do not last ten or 20 years like the diodes they're wired to. They catch fire, sometimes explode, right there in the lamp socket. I've had two of them do that in my house, and was just lucky.
To cross the streams here, my local congresswoman forced the ANG base to install a $12 million solar array "to save us from the peril of imported oil." I did not get to see the electric F-16's. There was Energy money involved of course, but a big chunk came out of the military budget.
They make enough power to operate one-fourth of the base. Test engineers (from the manufacturer, of course) are surprised at how low the degradation rate has been -- they may last more than the standard promise of 20 years. They make a little electricity even when there is snow on them, which is nice because we get quite a bit of snow here. We also get hailstorms and heavy ice coating several times a year, which makes me think those flat glass panels do not have a prayer of lasting 20 years. And the engineers admit that they will not pay for themselves in 20 years, or even 30. The electricity they replace is generated by a nuke plant and a coal plant -- not by "foreign oil."
And the manufacturer, who built their pilot plant and their R&D lab here, celebrated their success by beginning their main production plants in China and Mexico. They may pay a price though: the screeching halt in Italy queered a state-funded project there that they'd bet the solar farm on, and their financing is collapsing. Great. So the Air Guard won't even be able to get replacement parts once they go under.

Hell, there is a bunch of agencys that can be closed and save us a shit load of money! I am not saying Bachman should be president, but I told my hubby yesterday, the candidate who came up with closing these worthless wastes of money would win.

Yeah, that's the funny thing about all this "green" technology, it is being pressed into service before it is ready to replace energy sources that aren't the evil that they are made out to be, and in most cases the new "green" energy sources are more labor intensive and economically and ecologically damaging than the "dirty" sources they are replacing. We should build a shit-ton of nuke plants right now if we want to retire coal and oil and invest the cost savings into finding out what to do with the 5% or so of the nuclear fuel that cannot be re-processed and reused.
Posted by: GGE Of The Banned at August 20, 2011 08:43 PM (E+3js)
Well, DUH! The first bit trashes fantasy literature in general and Hollywood films as torture porn and having to go to films from this genre is "painfully slumming" for the poor dear. Someone expects him/her/it to appreciate the essential justice involved (for example) in making a sadistic torturer swallow the key to his slave's bonds and then telling the slaves to retrieve it and free themselves?
The rest of the unwashed masses had "cheerfully low expectations".
This quoted bit seems to be an exercise in moral self-congratulations but with the hope that being witty enough will disguise the scorn from those who aren't as enlightened.
It was CONAN for pities sake. He/she/it expected Eat, Pray, Love?
Do you know what it actually was? Other than lots of topless Bulgarians and gory blood spattered battles? The theme was this... In the past a great evil arose and the only ones who could stop it were the barbarian tribes who refused to give up their freedom and become subjects or slaves, and they saved the world. Now the evil rises again and again it's going to be the barbarian that refuses to kneel and refuses to submit, who saves the world. The barbarians are primitive and violent but they are free and equal (including women). It's pretty explicit that it is CIVILIZATION that enslaves and oppresses. The sub-villains are all former barbarian tribal leaders who chose to kneel, to submit to the evil and give up their liberty. Conan's father would not do it and he and his whole village is destroyed. Conan loves to slaughter, that's what he does, but he outright states that people should not be slaves or live in chains and so he slaughters for the oppressed without asking any tribute in return. He is not ashamed, in any way, of being a barbarian. He prefers it.
In other words, the ignorant Red Stater doesn't know what's in his own best interest! It's "What's Wrong With Cimmeria."
It's that political message, and the fact that the people Conan kills or tortures are horrible people who really do deserve to die as painfully and slowly as possible is what makes it "torture porn" because you watch and you think, "Yes, that was just, that was right."
No, it wasn't a brilliant movie. Someone expected it to be a brilliant movie?
It was a good, fun movie.
But there is no way any progressive sort is going to swallow the political message and there is no way, EVAR, that "I'm so snooty I've got arugula up my ass" reviewers are going to feel anything but scorn.

Ever read Robert E Howard? I don't care what the critics say, the guy was brilliant, pulp paper stock or not. His imitations of epic tales are as good as any fake epic, and keep in mind that things like 'Orlando Furioso' and 'The Aneid' are fake epics.
Synova's synopsis, SWIDT, of the backstory of Conan is just about right for the world that Howard built and populated. It's as close to high-culture shit as a moron needs to get.

Honestly Rove gets more credit than he deserves. And even if you're giving him only a little credit? I mean what are his victories for national elections? Bush winning in 2000? The victory he barely won that was a nailbiter down the line? So how about 2004? Kind of close again and likely benefitted from Bush still leading a semi-popular war and the Democrats running a liberal anti-war loser.

It kind of irritated me that Big Daddy only had one action scene before he bit the dust.
One of the factors I really, really appreciated about Kick-Ass was the director's (whoever he is) ability to frame and follow through an action scene without the risible shaky-cam garbage that passes for "exciting" these days. The fights were pretty sweet, brutal, and easily understandable.
I'm not all that excited for a second one, but I really hope that kind of filmography/choreography catches on. Hollywood needs it. Shaky-cam took away about 50% of the potential of Quantum of Solace.

I've never been thrilled with Rove. He seems to see himself as some kind of Lee Atwater, but he's not even in Atwater's league. If Gore had picked someone competent instead of Donna Brazile nobody outside Texas would know who Rove is.

Rove and some of the Bushies hate Perry. It has been said that Perry has a strained relationship with President Bush, but Perry recently said he spoke to Bush 43 about a presidential bid. With Rove, though, it's personal, and it stems back to a disagreement they had when he was managing one of Perry's campaigns.

"Back in 1990, it was Rove, a leading Republican consultant in Texas who recruited Perry, then a state House member who had switched to the GOP a year earlier, to take on the popular Democratic Agriculture Commissioner Jim Hightower.
Perry won that race and won reelection to the post in 1994. Four years later, Perry ran for the open lieutenant governor’s office as George W. Bush — Rove’s prized client — was cruising to a second gubernatorial term with an eye on running for president in 2000.
As the lore goes, Perry and Carney, his new chief political strategist, wanted to go negative on John Sharp, the Democratic nominee. Rove resisted and Perry went on to win a very narrow victory."
I know this is from the WaPo but as the story indicates, it's the most-repeated story about how it started.

Paintball gun. Non-lethal, non-toxic and it washes off anything you don't want it on. Hit him a couple of times with that and pretty soon he won't come back. Another option is airsoft, it doesn't make the paint mess and it stings a bit more, but it might dent metal objects so be aware of what's behind your target (rule 4).

Don't waste your time or energy trying to kick the cat. Get a squirt bottle from Home Depot and fill it with plain water. Adjust the nozzle for maximum distance, and practice a bit.
The cat will understand water, and will never hear it coming. No pain, no complaints from neighbors.

The act of using a garden hose, by the nature of how it works and the noise it makes, may be less effective than a squirt bottle.
Seriously wounding or crippling an animal, particularly a domestic one, is never good ... or right ... except in self-defense. Odds are the cat will make it home ...
Either do a quick clean kill, or do not inflict pain, blunt trauma or wounds.

They need to lose the loose shit.

When native-born English speaking people fuck it up, that shit's just embarassing.
Lose - What happens when you bet the farm on your favorite sports team.\
Loose - Your wife's pussy after I'm through with her.
Learn the difference! It could save your life.

If you think my English is bad, wait until I whip out some Russian.
In the meantime, Billy Cobham has some Stratus to do.

I've heard clips of her new album and it's overproduced garbage. Too bad. She did some classic stuff back in the day. That duet with Ozzy is timeless.

Huh, had to look that up on Wikidingdong.
Scissoring. I gotcha. Yeah, that's okay too.

Horrendous as well as stupid.
That's the kind of thing that gives our side a bad name. Next week the MSM will be asking Perry, Bachmann, et al do they think "sluts are asking for it?"
Particularly bad timing on the author's part because just today (yesterday now) a drunken NYPD cop got arrested, basically in the act, of raping a woman at 6:30 in the morning. He was clearly out all night, she otoh was on her way to work. He had his badge and had used his service Glock to assault the woman. I don't know if assault is the right word, but he held her at gunpoint, that's what I'm saying.
Gee, I wonder what she was wearing?
And the comments were pretty disgusting too.
I'm not registered over there, and I couldn't find an email address, so I sent an annoyed email to their "tips" addy.
I can't remember the last time I was so infuriated.
So, thanks for letting me vent!
