When the Northridge quake hit, it collapsed the La Brea overpass on the 10 freeway.

A contractor said if they waived all the stupid rules and regulations, he'd get it fixed in 3 weeks, and would take a penalty for every day late after 3 weeks.

It was done ahead of time and under budget.

This...this is what is so frustrating.  There is no way we'll get high speed rail built in under 50 years.  The permits, regulations, environmental hassles and lawsuits.  The Hoover Dam?  Just imagine trying to build that now.

Yeah, but they didn't really show the Yakuza getting sliced. He just kinda grimaces and falls over.

The entire film was a homage to the first film. I counted at least 10 lines there were verbatim from the first film. There were also a few scenes that were exact copies.

The Yakuzi scene was clearly supposed to be reminiscent of the American Indian's scene in the first film. I was totally expecting the Yakuza to die and was pleasantly suprised that he lived.

The biggest problems i had with the movie were the Topher Grace twist and the quasi-plot hole at the end.

The problem with Predators is that there were only two possible outcomes (TPK or Alligator Egg*), so there was very little for the audience to care about.

* TPK = Total Party Kill, in roleplaying where none of the players survive an encounter

* Alligator Egg, in horror movies where he movie ends with an indication that the monster/child of monster/another monster is on the way

oh i agree. It was pretty much as good as it was going to be. It was certainly far better than the Predator 2 or the two that followed it.

 I only had two complaints. The Topher Grace twist at the end seemed out of place and forced.  It didn't make any sense to put it in there. Sure it explained why he was on the planet with the rest of them, but it seems like they could have worked that into the film early and not at the end there.

Also, I know movies like this have to end with something suspenseful. Like horror movies that end with the supposedly dead villian moving his hand or something. But the fact that there were parachuttes falling made no sense. They had been on that planet for 1 alien day and alien night( as it was a different planet the time days seemed longer).  When Fishburns character was talking earlier in the film and said he had been through ten seasons, you got the feeling that he had been there for years. I mean he was AirCav right, yet he was kinda fat, old and outta shape.  Well if the predators had a new hunt every alien day, then Fishburns character was there for ten days right? It just didn't make any sense.

You've got to look into the critical design flaws of the ships making up the bulk of the Imperial Navy.  Grand Admiral Thrawn might have been able to use Star Destroyers effectively for hit and run attacks, but he's dead, and you need to make some more suitable ships for this purpose.

Trump has a ton of baggage, no clear political philosophy, no consistent history of political philosophy, and so far he's not exactly doing a bang-up job of presenting himself.

His past "debate style" steps over the aggressive line to caustic, and that tends to shed votes faster than a Persian cat sheds fur in Florida.

The F-35 is single engined, or as the Navy puts it, a class A mishap in waiting.  Also, the VSTOL version of the F-35 is CNX, so the Marines don't need it and can't use it.  The Navy never really did have a role for it, the F-18 variants are filling the fighter and attack roles just fine.  The F-22 was ready to go and was what the Air Farce needed for the mission it was designed for. The F-35 is yet another overpriced under-capable POS that is looking for a mission to justify it.

Guys, the LAPD did use justified deadly force in the Rodney King riots. Hell, even a couple of rioters were justifiably killed by Korean shop owners. Approximately 52 rioters were killed during the King riots. Hate to burst the bubble, but the LAPD did use justifiable deadly force on a few of them.

Very good land based aircraft.  Not so good for carrier ops, the A-7 had an engine that just would not die which is why it stayed around for so long.  Ever wonder why the Navy didn't fly the F-16?  Answer - single engine, which is why they opted for a carrier version of the YF-17 that became the Hornet.

Apples, oranges.  The piston engined aircraft in use at the time would run with half the cylinders shot away, a capability that was proven more than once. In Korea the Panther was in service for eight years and the Banshee was a 2 engined aircraft. The other two Navy birds used in Korea were WW2 piston engined aircraft (the Skyraider and the Corsair).  Korea and early VietNam was where the Navy developed it's preference for dual engined jet aircraft.

Wow, that's still pretty good.  She's probably a little electrolyte imbalanced/depleted/dehydrated still.  I don't know if these are safe for kids, but I really like using Endurolytes for electrolyte replacement during long runs/marathons, and training in the heat.

which is why they bought a swing-wing and kept the weapons system, I suppose.  FWIW, the F-111 had a problematic outer weapons pylon, the Navy's primary concern with them was maintainability in a carrier environment, which is another reason why the USAF and the USN fly different aircraft.  Also, compared to the Tomcat, a carrier version of the F-111 would have been an unresponsive pig in the landing due in part to it's engine setup, which is really saying something if you have ever seen the Turkey come in for a landing.

We (Boeing, formerly McDonnell Douglas, kemosabe) are still building F-15K's for S. Korea, I think.  That would be a cheaper (not cheap) follow -on for the F-15C's that have too many hours on them.

I think that GD is also still making the F-16 Block 60, which is also still cheaper than the F-35.

New technology is great, but if we don't have enough airframes, we sucking gas.

As is said so often said here, we're boned financially, so it's hard to justify the cost per plane of the F-22 (which is frankly an incredible airplane) or the F-35 (just a kinda pricey upgrade for the F-16).

I mean, look at the procurement fiasco surrounding the new Air Force tanker.  We still don't have a new tanker, and the KC-135 was old 20 years ago. Cheney wanted to kill the V-22 back in '91, and yet it lives on, to prove a point.  I guess.

Remeber the new A-12? Nope, didn't think so.

I did a race in Tacoma.  I was signed up for the 20 mile race, but had to downgrade to the 20K.  I rolled my ankle a couple of weeks ago, and it is still bugging me.  I had a bad race, slower time than my 15 mile race a month ago.  Luckily, all the fast girls in my age group ran the 20 mile race, so I still got second in my division.  I felt like crap the whole time.  My other friend, who also was going to run the 20 miler and downgraded to the 20k because she was just getting over a hideous cold that had gone down to her chest, said she felt horrible the whole time too and wanted to quit at mile 3.  She ended up being the overall winner for the women. 

Mr. runningrn was supposed to do the 20 mile race and ended up not doing not running at all because his pyraformis was bugging him.  He's getting a massage tomorrow.  I had one on Thursday, and my ankle felt worse on Friday (the guy really grinded on my ankle--he only worked on that, my hip flexors, and my right ITB for an hour).

That I can't speak to, but wasn't the USAF once US Army Air Corps?  The Army should have kept better control of it's offspring.  Seriously, that's why the Marines have their own air force, to provide air cover for their own grunts.  The USAF got dazzled with the high-altitude bombing role and the CAS mission kind of took a back seat.  It's a problem, that I'll grant you, but the USN and the USMC still know how to provide ground support.  You're welcome.

Katya, there've actually been a few good ones.  The one where she interviewed GWB for his book was really good, and the one where she went to Walter Reid to visit injured soldiers was awesome.  You could tell she was really uncomfortable around them, and every single one of them said they would go back and do it again.  She just didn't get it.

I run a fair amount, and am in pretty decent shape, but you distance runners are just fkn crazy.  Downgrading to...only...20K instead of 20 miles sounds like a damn good decision to me!

I was really bummed out, but my ankle was not happy with me during or after the run (especially on the hills).  We signed up for this race series back in December.  It started Jan. 1, and you could choose to do the series in k's or miles.  1/1 was 5, the end of Jan. was 10, Feb. was 15 and then March was 20.  I was doing the miles til this race.  If you do 3 out of the 4 races, you can qualify for series awards.  Because I did 3 of the miles races and had decent races, I was still able to get 2nd in my division for the series.  I was hoping to do the 20 miler since we're signed up for a June marathon and it's great training for that.

The problem is that sometimes you have to pick a hill to die on, and sadly the Army hasn't had someone willing to do that for a while.  It was a Marine LT that fell on the M-16 grenade, but the result was the soldiers in the field got a better rifle out of it.  I don't know who the last great Army general was, but I'm hard pressed to think of one like USMC Gen. Mattis who told the Iraqis "I come in peace, I didn't bring artillery, but I'm begging you, with tears in my eyes...if you fuck with me I'll kill you all."  I think Petreaus might have been that kind of General, and I'm pretty sure Schwartzkopf was, but the shame of it is they weren't the kind of General that would end up in positions in today's Army where they could affect policy.

Gushka, you are in my prayers. Have fun with the 'ettes tomorrow, wish I could be there.

Yeah, me to (although I thnk I am older than you) ,  I grew up in Dayton, and remember the B-52's flying over the house, night and day.  Actually made me feel a whole lot safer than not.  I knew a couple of SAC officers, and they were they greatest guys in the world.  Incredibly dedicated and professional.  I knew Glenn McClernon after he retired (long story - former 2-star who commanded WPAFB).  My Grandmother worked at Wright-Pat during WWII repairing Norden bombsights, and worked in Air Force Intelligence until she died in 1961.

I knew tons of people (civilians) and officers and airmen who were in the Air Force.  I think the world of the people and the service, just get confused about how they spend money, too.

I am generally ambivalent about Duke, but I can think of 88 professors there that need to STFU.  I'm not a rabid fan of any college team - or of any professional sports team either, for that matter - but the NC State/UNC one really annoys me because it goes way over the top, it's just not healthy.  I know of UNC people who have not been hired at my company because they are all NC State alumni there.

Yes, they could.  Some parts obviously would have to be manufactured but it is doable.  We just took a bunch of P-3's out of the bone yard a few years ago and sold them to the Pakistani's and the Taiwanese.  I imagine you could do the same with the F-15, F-16, and F-18 models there.

As far as CAS I agree.  The AF has been trying to get rid of CAS for decades and only relented because they couldn't keep the money.  Then they tried to retire the A-10 claiming they could do the same job with F-16s.

The marines do just that mission just fine and there's no reason the army should be limited to rotary wings.  If I'm king tomorrow tactical aircraft go to the army and the AF only does strategic/nuclear.
