Overnight Thread-The Eighth Plague Edition [CDR M]
— Open Blogger

You know, the Mayans might just be right about 2012. Someone caught the eighth plague on video. Kind of a trip. I guess they are calling them bugnadoes. With all the flooding earlier this summer along the Missouri river, there has been some prime breeding conditions for the little critters.
Video below the jump.

Strange New USB Thumb Drive

Wow. What will they think of next? This here is a device that is not only your basic geek stick but also functions as a vibrator. Yeah, you read that right. A friggin' vibrator. Crazy.

Made of body-safe silicone and metal, the Duet is designed for the female body. With dual motors, it can deliver powerful and precise vibration exactly where you want it. The tip, inside edges, and outside edges provide slightly different intensities so that you can customize your pleasure!

The Duet contains 4 vibration modes and 5 power levels so that you can customize the experience with the perfect intensity.

Woman Injects Herself With Horse Blood

She says it's for the art. Um, what? And she did this sober? I guess it's better than doing horse semen shooters down under. I wonder if this is somehow related to Sarah Jessica Parker?

Earlier this year, after months of preparation, she was injected with horse blood plasma, which contained the full spectrum of immunoglobulins without provoking an allergic reaction.

As part of the performance piece she also wore a set of stilts with hooves on the end to feel at one with the horse. She also walked around with donor horse in a "communication ritual" before having her hybrid blood extracted and freeze-dried.

A Chemjeff Party?

Chemjeff, please, please tell me this wasn't your house warming party.

New Library Idea

Those crazy Canucks have a new library idea. Canadian Library Will Loan Out People As Well As Books. Ok, the big question is will it be the hawt librarian or not when you check out the book of Kamisutra.

Marvel VS Star Wars

An artist by the name of Jonathan Moore has put up some artwork of Marvel VS Star Wars characters and you can still vote on who wins. I'm not buying that the Head Ewok beat Iron Man and Thor. No way Ace can do that.

Cart Before The Horse?

Captain Kirk's birthplace

Ok, I know Trekkies can be pretty hardcore but this is a bit ridiculous no? Future Birthplace Of Capt. James T. Kirk. Strange too the use of a tombstone to highlight someone's birthplace. You know there is gonna be pressure on whoever has a baby boy coming due in March of 2228 to name their kid this. Heck, I bet their will be pregnant trekkie fans driving out to this town to have their baby there.

Best Study Evah

Well, the best study after the one on how drinking is good for you and having sex three times a week is good exercise. This study argues that surfing the internet at work makes you more productive. Heh, cyberloafing. I like it. I would argue though that Bubble Shooter is NOT productive.

“Browsing the Internet serves an important restorative function,” according to a report from the National University of Singapore.

So-called cyberloafing can refresh workers mentally after long periods of work, researchers said at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management in San Antonio this week.

Surfing the Web is even better for productivity than talking or texting with friends or sending personal emails, the study found.

Yes, but we don't think tonight's is the last one because they haven't really built it up any, I assume they'll do some sort of week long running of episodes or something like they did for Hannah Montana and Suite Life on Deck.

Yeah that happens to me too, except it sucks when you're in the middle of a crisis.  I don't know if you do this, but I try to think of all these alternative plans, in case the original plan falls through.  But when I am in panic mode, the alternative plans are all hyperbolically insane.  Such as: "Oh man, what if I don't have enough money for groceries this week?  I guess I'll have to... SELL A KIDNEY!"  You know, that level of ridiculosity.

You don't need to worry about the robots dying. They can be replaced. (so can humans in a way, but it would be a PR nightmare to lose someone in space)

Also, aside from pride, not much is gained by sending humans to other planets. Everything a human can do there a robot can do just as well if not better.

The only reason we'd need to send humans to another planet would be if we were going to colonize it.

Now Anderson Cooper is confronting the Syrian regime's propaganda.  Would he still be doing this if it was the Bush Administration that was seeking the removal of Bashir Assad from office, or it because the Obama Administration is now halfheartedly supporting the Syrian protesters?

Roddenberry was a fine writer for television; it was Ellison who didn't know how to do that.  Ellison's a diva and an asshole, and has nursed a grudge over the rewriting of his unusable script for "The City on the Edge of Forever" for 45 years (what really gets his goat is that the rewritten episode is widely considered the best hour of Star Trek ever produced).  He wrote a heavily-slanted book about the affair in the mid-90s, a few years after Roddenberry had died and could no longer defend himself.

183 Chemjeff, you are wise - you don't want to do that stuff on your own, especially being a new homeowner.  Ask around, see if there's anybody near you who can help you clean up and take away the limbs on their own.

My family has been especially blessed on the home-maintenance front by having someone (my stepfather) who spent the better part of a decade building mobile homes, so he knows all kinds of tricks and inventive ways to solve those pesky home-gremlins.  He came up with a particularly innovative solution to prevent the basement from flooding (because the previous homeowners didn't put a proper foundation in and didn't seal the concrete floor correctly) and how to quickly get rid of the water that still seeped through the floor when the ground was super-saturated.

Its probably because he isn't out there saying anything new.  He's out on the campaign trail and speaking, probably giving whatever passes for his standard campaign speech, so all the "big news" stuff in that is already out there.  So expect media coverage to end up being at a similar level to other candidates.  But expect coverage of people talking shit about him to continue at a higher level.

Harlan Ellison went through a long dry spell -- I think he had writer's block for more than a decade -- and it made him even more bitter than he already was. Plus he's sitting on some short fiction that he collected for Last Dangerous Visions that has some potentially brilliant work by a number of authors. The guy is gifted, but deeply screwed.

266 re the "bugnadoes" --

I live along the Niagara River, one of the most dramatic and over-achieving waterways in the world.  It was polluted to the point that its source, Lake Erie, was for a time considered effectively dead.

Over the last 50 years or so, in a combination of clean water and anti-pollution laws and the accidental introduction of the zebra mussel, which vacuums up everything, the Lake is alive again, and the first sign of it that was obvious to the civilians along the shoreline was "bugnadoes" of caddis flies (locally, sand flies).  We call them 'banners' not bugnadoes, because they rarely dance out in the open; they flag themselves off trees and light standards.

I was born in 1956 and I've lived here all my life; I never saw such banners until the mid-1980s.  I had to ask my dad what they were.  They are, clearly, a sign of clean water and  a return of natural biological functioning in the environment.

279 Please keep family and friends of Spc Jordan Morris, Stillwater, OK, in your prayers tomorrow as he is laid to rest. 23 years old, he lost his life in Afghanistan along with 4 others. Westboro "Church" members are planning to attend.

Done, Marybel.   Those Wesboro assholes are more hateful to me than the mosslims.  I just don't get it with them.  They need a good smiting.  And soon.  RIP, Spc Morris, thank you for your service and for your sacrifice.  May God bring comfort to your family.

285 USS Diversity, there is a older high-school movie that I really liked - it's one of those guilty pleasures of mine.  It's called "Just One of the Guys".  The basic premise has holes big enough to drive a Mac Truck through (a teenage girl poses as a guy because she thinks her article for a journalism contest was rejected due to "sexism"), but the acting is decent, and it's sweet enough without causing a toothache.  The ending was a bit predictable too, but oh well...

363 329 323, I hate that fucking war, I know why we are there, but I hate it.

Posted by: Oldsailor's poet at August 20, 2011 12:09 AM (ZDUD4)

you think you hate it?

here is what i got from Grimmy today:

"I don't see any good things of this damn place

baby, what i have to see, I don't like

and I can't share it with you"

translation from Grimspeak: "I have seen senselessness and  horror"

how do i know? because last deployment he never spoke of the bad things that he saw but he smiled sometimes when we skyped. Now he never smiles ever, and he looks sadder every day, now, than i have ever seen him look at home --except on the day we put down his fluffy little 20 yo cat that slept in his arms all the time.

i hate this goddman thing all with every single breath i take. But i have to smile and be cheerful, and remind him to sleep before he skypes me after the next mission (i want him to check right in but know its better he sleeps)  then i tell him

"Have a good day at work, sweetie!" like everything's normal, because its so important to him.

have i told you i have afghan friends? That i have studied the region for 20 years? that i speak one of their languages? that i know what they do to their prisoners and hostages, especially the enemy soldiers?

i hate this fucking war so goddamn bad. but more than anything i hate the people who wont let us win it, and the people who refuse to study our enemy properly and assume they are just like us.

I know they are not.

And i know what they think of losers who wont fight for their tribe, give back as good as they get, and flinch when some hurt's inflicted on them. And you know who i am talking about--hes WAAY behind, leading.

Cam Newton threw a long desperation pass that fell incomplete on the final play of the first half Friday night, and thatÂ’s the closest he came to reaching the end zone.

Well, I think you're wise to try to avoid it.

I wish my dad had not hooked up with (and married) a woman with kids.  I know that would have been hard to achieve at his age, but they've been nothing but trouble.  My dad went from having his house paid off and no financial worries, to being unable to send my husband a $50 birthday check until his pension check cleared.

His wife is a spendthrift and her daughter is even worse.  Plus, she got knocked up by some guy with a drug problem.  They stupidly married.  Then he got rough, so they divorced, but not before threats (involving guns) and restraining orders.  Naturally the stupid bint was staying at my dad's house when this all went down.

We were not a perfect family and I'm not a perfect daughter, but I never did anything close to what this chick had been doing.

Basically, he married white trash and it ticks me off because now I have to worry about him.   I bet my (zombie) mom is pissed off, too.

Yeah, I'm finding kits online, but it sounds like you need to be careful to do it right.

I think I'll have my husband ask some of the folks around here.  Lots of BYU fans and Jazz fans, so I imagine one of them must've had a jersey framed before.  The framing is going to cost more than the shirt (because we got it well below the 'value').

well, this is going to sound incredibly selfish, but: I try to avoid women who already have kids, because I don't know if I want to deal with all the drama of stepchildren, baby fathers, etc., etc.   People tell me I'd be great with kids, but honestly that is only because I'm only around them for an hour or two, max.  If I were around kids 24/7 I think I would go crazy.

A few weeks ago in a movie thread I recommended THE MISSION from 1986.
Anyone see it?

Beautiful scenery, and Robert Deniro can act, believe it or not.

Posted by: soothsayer at August 19, 2011 09:55 PM (L2Ssy)

I saw that film years ago, but I don't remember too much about it. I think I was probably only in my early teens when I watched it, so I didn't appreciate everything that was going on.

And, yes, Robert De Niro can act, it's only over the last ten years or so that he's turned into a hack.

If you're wondering that about a good thing (e.g. food), the answer is probably "sadly, no." If you're wondering that about a bad thing (e.g. "will my almost-full bladder last 'til morning?") the answer is probably, "up-and-at-'em!"

484 viking,

485 I know, right?  But still . . .

Posted by: viking at August 19, 2011 11:43 PM (gwqbE)

486 I LOVE Coast To Coast, but I hate the callers.  They always sound like drunk losers looking for attention.  I prefer the guests.  Sometimes they have some good ones on, and by good ones I mean the professional liars that have been peddling their bullshit for 20, 30 years and are expert at it.  Then there are the assholes that are trying to build a career around bullshit but have neither the talen, originality or charisma to pull it off.

And then they have the occasional serious person on, like Amity Shlaes.

But this sucks.  It's nearing the time of year where the interference from Mexican radio stations will overpower the local stations (I live on the border).  In the summer, not so bad.  Hell, the signal is practically clear.  In the winter it's awful.  It's just a lot of garbled static and Mexican voices and music.  I think there are like three of those fuckers that crank their output the moment the FCC goes home for the evening.  Like fucking clockwork, man, 5PM rolls around and suddenly there's some Mexican crank talking the local afternoon crank.  Fuckers.

Posted by: Robert at August 19, 2011 11:43 PM (4ixH5)

487 Robert, I have a similar problem here in Chicago, only its just buzzing  interference.  I've started streaming radio over the internets.  You're right though, the show can be pretty entertaining.

Posted by: viking at August 19, 2011 11:50 PM (gwqbE)

488 The local station here, KURV, doesn't stream Coast to Coast cause C2C rather insists that they do it themselves for their Streamlink BS.  Suck!

I think there are others around the interwebz that stream it, but I haven't really looked.

I also must admit that I've grown somewhat fond of Mark Levin's show.  I mean, the man has a face for radio and a voice that makes you want to strangle yourself, but I wake up to him in the evenings and...well...seems I've grown accustomed to his nasally shriek.

Posted by: Robert at August 19, 2011 11:54 PM (4ixH5)

489 I don't know what atmospheric effect it is that makes Mexican stations worse in winter than in summer.  All I know is they basically max out their megawattage all the same.

Posted by: Robert at August 19, 2011 11:56 PM (4ixH5)

490 I listen to Levin every night - best conservative talk show host on the radio.  His voice is an acquired taste, for sure.  I laugh every time he busts out with "That's right I said it!"

If you go to Coasttocoastam.com they have a link to all the stations that carry the show and most of those stream live so you can get it for free.

Posted by: viking at August 19, 2011 11:59 PM (gwqbE)

491 When he's on, he's on *fire*!  After that one judge struck down Obummercare he was just like, "my brain is this fucking huge," and talking about all the intricacies of the case and so on.  Horribly impressive.

Then he'll turn around and trash talk his callers for an hour.

Although the time he praised those lefty assholes from Whale Wars still has me baffled.  Man, that shit was...startling.

497 Okay, I put this in the comments of an earlier thread but since I am handy with modern browser technology like monkeys with a loaded rifles I'll try again, late at night. While no one is looking. It can be our secret. My Perry Campaign Ad Script: “Daddy, thank you for helping me with the pine box derby!” “No problem Kiddo, when we are done here we can make some bacon and shrimp sandwiches.” “Yum!...Daddy?” “Yes, Son.” “What is a pimp hand?” “Well, I don't think I...” “Please, Daddy!” “Well Okay. But don't tell Mom. A pimp hand is the open fist of a man who rents women to others for sex. That man is called a pimp. See, to keep his 'bitches' in line, a pimp uses a pimp hand to hit just hard enough to leave a psychological mark but not hard enough to make a physical mark which would reduce the market value of a 'bitch'. In fact, if performed correctly all the pimp need do is 'show the pimp hand' and the 'bitch' starts crying 'bitch' tears and making all kind of 'bitch' excuses... ” “Daddy, you sure know a lot about this.” “Er...well, it's used more as a figure of speech nowadays. Like in politics, blogging and other shady enterprises.” “Daddy, can Rick Perry use a pimp hand?” “He sure as hell can, Son. He sure as hell can.” “Daddy?” “Yes, Son?” “Can President Obama use a pimp han...” “Son, don't say such things! It's disrespectful and your mother and I did not raise you to think that way.” “Daddy, is that because associating a common pimp stereotype with the first African-American President is inherently vile and racist?” “Heavens no, son. It's because Obama is a bitch.”
