— Gabriel Malor I understand that Governor Palin has been taking fire from asshole reporters for three years now. I get that her life is basically a media circus. Part of that, of course, is that she wanted the attention. But wanting attention and wanting what the media did to her are two different things. So I understand she's a bit shell-shocked.
This, though, is not appropriate behavior.
What happened was that Alex Pappas of The Daily Caller, one of the rising stars among political scribes and a meticulously careful and wonderfully polite, fair-minded young man (an aside: I've known him since he was in junior high school), wrote a perfectly fine story about Palin's current stances vis-a-vis the presidential race. In it, one of the things she said was that if Mitt Romney is the nominee, well, of course she would endorse him over Barack Obama.Fox Nation picked up the story and, in its own headline (not Pappas', not the Daily Caller's, but its own headline completely apart from anything Pappas ever wrote) played up the "Romney endorse" angle in a way that apparently did not make it clear that the endorsement might be in the general election, rather than the primary campaign. (The headline is no longer available at Fox Nation, so I can't say exactly what the wording was.)
Anyway, the Palin team pounced. Specifically inviting over reporter Kasie Hunt from Politico so she could hear the exchange, Palin called Pappas' cell phone and began berating him in a very scolding manner for writing a headline suggesting she supports Romney. Pappas didn't even know what she was talking about. When he tried to say that neither he nor his editors had written such a headline, she said she didn't have time for this, that she needed to go back to the "real people" at the State Fair, and hung up on him.
Palin needs to get a grip. This was both sloppy staff work and rude behavior from Palin. One of our frequent gripes with the President is that he's a thin-skinned whiner who can't handle the attention that comes with national office. I get that Palin has had a hard time. It will not be any easier from the Oval Office.
She had a proper option here. If Palin honestly believed Alex had written, incorrectly, that she endorsed Romney then she should have asked for a correction and, whether she got one or not, issued a statement making her position clear. Of course, if she'd taken this level-headed approach, her misperception about Alex's piece would have been cleared right up when she asked for the correction. Yelling at someone on the phone was probably cathartic, but it wasn't presidential.
On the topic of Things Not Presidential: This? Also not very presidential. Accusing public servants of being "almost treasonous" because they have a different view of monetary policy plays well for Ronulans, but then again we expect so very little in the way of good behavior from Ronulans. Hearing it from a legitimate candidate like Perry surprised me. Particularly since, if he is elected, Perry's term will overlap with Bernanke's term.

As someone wrote on the AS comment board - when you've been ducking bullets for three years, you can't be blamed for jumping into a mud puddle when a car backfires. Yeah, Palin overreacted, but I don't blame her. It's not her job to keep track of who hasn't tried yet to destroy her family.

Perry's comment is a lot more calculated and politically intelligent than you may suspect. Perry isn't out to impress New York analysts, or the Wall Street crowd in general. He already knows that they hate him, and he refreshingly doesn't try to do anything to suck up to people who hate him. In fact, he goes out of his way to poke a sharp stick in their eye. Which is what he did with the Bernank.
Perry is looking at the Voters, not at the D.C. crowd. How popular do you think Bernanke is these days? How many voters will hear Perry and say "oh, that poor Ben Bernanke, he's always looking out for us, who would say anything bad about him?"
Perry is betting that Bernanke is even more unpopular than Obama. I think that's a pretty safe bet.

Way, way off topic, but the Mrs. is having surgery on her knee this morning. (Basically having some bone shaved off, then the kneecap realigned, then screwed back in place.) Not life threatening, but it should help her with her knee pain.
The weird thing is that after 14 years of marriage (with the exception of childbirth) this is the first surgery she's had, compared to the 40 or so I've had. I don't like being on this side of the waiting room.
Anyway, please pray, burn incense, put sauce on the flying spaghetti monster, or offer up a burnt offering of hobo, as is your custom, for her. I'd appreciate it.

As stipulated by the Banking Act of 1935, the President appoints the seven members of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System; they must then be confirmed by the Senate and serve for 14 years. Once appointed, Governors may not be removed from office for their policy views. The chairman and vice-chairman are chosen by the President from among the sitting Governors for four-year terms; these appointments are also subject to Senate confirmation. In practice the chairman is often re-appointed, but cannot serve longer than one 14-year term as governor (or, if appointed to fill a position whose previous occupant had not served out their term, then 14 years plus the time remaining in the previous unexpired term).
So if this is accurate the President can not fire him unless he is found to be disqualified. (There are limitations on who can be appointed)Posted by: Vic at August 16, 2011 04:32 AM (M9Ie6)

I hate being the one in the waiting room. Just a head's up. There's a low carb diet called the "zone" by Barry Sears. It's an anti-inflammation diet. She might want to look into it as she's recuperating, it really speeds things along. It literally rids you of all your aches and pains that aren't "big mechanical" within 48 hours. Just look under zone classic at the zonediet website.
Posted by: dagny at August 16, 2011 04:38 AM (nBOrb)
That Palin chose to personally make a berating phone call before reading what a journalist actually wrote was unimpressive and inappropriate, especially if she wants us to believe her statesmanship qualities. During the '08 campaign as the VP, her (assigned?) receptionist handed her a crank phone call to take without vetting. That was unfortunate. But Palin's had plenty of time to vet and amass her own people, and if she can't do everything herself (who can?), they should be the one's researching details and making polite inquiries on her behalf before she actually gets involved slinging mud.
So charismatic candidates fly off the handle and go too far casting erroneous judgment. Nothing new there.
Yes, American voters are in fighting mode. But creating shit that wasn't already there only mires us further unless we get over it without distraction.

I'm a huge WFB fan but the misunderstanding of his rule has caused a lot of the problem we have now. The elected political body has become increasingly more liberal moving the Overton window way to the left.
The mistake is that some believe that electing any old RINO is better than the Democrat.
Buckley did not care if someone was a Republican or Democrat. He was for the more conservative. His BuckPac was the reason Lieberman won the Senate seat in CT over Lowell Weicker.
Reagan today , after seeing how far down the road to socialist hell we've gone, I believe, would change his 11th Commandment to read "Thou shalt not speak ill of any Republican" to "Thou shalt not speak ill of any Conservative".
Palin takes it to Ogabe, the media, and the entire left. I have yet to get an answer from the Palin-phobes here to the question of what policy disagreements they have with her.

You idiotically equate punishing those who risked all to gain more, with making this country better. You are as petty and selfish as your argument and what you would make of this country. You're too stupid to look around the world at the collapse brought about by the very "fairness" you spew out of your petty selfishness. You, and your ilk, are pathetic in your envy, your laziness and your sense of entitlement to that which you have no right.

You seem to be the one who's rewriting the Buckley Rule to serve your own ends. "The most rightward electable candidate." That would be Scott Brown over Martha Coakley. That would be Marco Rubio over Charlie Crist and Kendrick Meek. That would, unfortunately, have been Castle over Coons.
Buckley worked against only three major Republican candidates - John Lindsay, Charles Goodell, and Lowell Weicker. In all three cases, the non-Republican was actually more conservative than the Republican. That is not nearly true today.
Today, only Communists and organized-labor toadies win Democrat Senate primaries. Scott Brown may be a squishy moderate, but Martha Coakley made him look like Allen West by comparison. Which is why we were right to support him and help him win.

1. From what you write, she vetted and hired incompetency for her staff.
2. You're preaching to the choir, GMan. I supported Sarah Palin during her initial unpopularity here with this crowd. I don't dislike Palin the person. But given her cumulative endorsements ("fusionist"?), I wouldn't "believe" in her any more than in any other politician. They're all opportunists riding the wave of their choice to corrupted power.
3. I don't follow Palin's facebook diary. I responded to what Gabe printed before this thread of comments. If Gabe's criticizing Palin for failing to research a source while Gabe himself fails to research a source, teh funny.

On the Perry story, I'm not sure exactly what you want here. If he says it any less forcefully it either gets completely ignored or panned as milquetoast. Of course a candidate is going to be hyperbolic and say things that are a little over the top. That said, I heard the quote, and it didn't strike me as "unpresidential." He wasn't just decrying the monetary policy, but specifically the politicization of monetary policy. You can agree or disagree that teh Bernanke is politicizing policy, but if you agree with it, wouldn't you think (in the hyperbolic terms of a presidential campaign) that it was "almost treasonous?"

"Put simply, Dominionism means that Christians have a God-given right to rule all earthly institutions. Originating among some of America’s most radical theocrats, it’s long had an influence on religious-right education and political organizing. But because it seems so outré, getting ordinary people to take it seriously can be difficult. Most writers, myself included, who explore it have been called paranoid." link

Yeah, I'm sure every staff is going to do total due diligence on every story every time. Like Vic said, the error was in the Fox newsers' making the headline look like Palin was "Endorsing!!!" Romney. This is why news agencies are terrible at communications. Ironic, but all too true.

This.
Especially the staff aspect. After all this time, it seems she still has not surrounded herself with professionals who add to her skill set. They appear to be great at promoting her and that's about it.
When Palin first hit the scene I was so excited. And, as I recall (someone can correct me here), fairly early on she was getting advice from some good people. I *think* I even remember Fred! being in the mix. In any event, I see no evidence that she ever takes that advice. Not a good quality in a leader.
I realize it is de rigeur to have to criticize another one of the "candidates" (Palin not being one, but whatever) in order to "balance" things, but I honestly did not see anything wrong with Perry's statement. I watched the clip and the way he delivered it, as well as the words themselves, was not unhinged. It's important to note the difference between describing actions (treasonous, traitorous) and labeling people. The former is standard, hard-hitting politics. It's the latter that poisons the well.
In any event, if I had to pull the lever in the primary today, Palin would be the second-lowest ranked candidate on my list, right above Ron Paul. That's really a sad thing to say considering I donated to the ticket based solely on her presence on it in 2008.

But, really, somebody with so much experience in the public eye should know A) that reporters often don't write their own headlines;
Apparently, sometimes reporters do write their own headlines.
What is far more instructive than the main subject of this prissy, pissy little article is that:
1. Palin's response was fast, direct (mama grizzly herself, not a staffer) and to the point.
2. The Palin POV : she said she didn't have time for this, that she needed to go back to the "real people" at the State Fair. Well, now.
3. And this: a Palin press aide called Pappas back not to apologize but to say that they now realized it was Fox and that the headline had been taken down.
She is operating at a very high level of political message management. She's running.

Still haven't read any of Ron Paul's books or articles at Mises.org. You couldn't face the disappointment of finding out how wrong you are.
You can't legally exonerate invading a sovereign nation with the US Military in order to commit political assassinations without allowing our enemies to do likewise.
Besides, Bin Laden was already dead. He couldn't have lived this long even if he'd wanted to, even if the US wanted him to. It was medically not feasible. Top that with CIA witnesses who saw him dying years ago in an American hospital. No cure. Yet you promote invading Pakistan as what intelligent, patriotic Americans do in order to win hearts and minds of allies enemies. Whatever the mission accomplished that night, dead men tell no lies.
Expound on the "virtue" of genocide while you're at it. As if every anti-American abroad could be annihilated. Even if possible, given so many stateside, OMNIA VANITAS.
To hell with revisionism for the ignorant.
Ron Paul's platform would cut military spending but not spending on national security. He isn't the only conservative Republican who would not have begun the US aggressive invasions in the Middle East. No flip flopping like the neoconservatives whining to pull out our forces now that it's proven a political disaster and military failure. Fred Thompson warned as well against starting fights you don't have clear strategy for winning. And years ago, teh Fred advised it better to withdraw than to remain in Afghanistan given the circumstances as they are, a never-ending war. Call our Middle Eastern wars what you will. Kinetic actions are what losers fight since they aren't interested in "victory". I worried years ago of the sick irony that our bravest and most patriotic young Americans are being weeded out through loyal military service. And it was the Air Force Magazine that published reports, articles and letters referencing the massive spike in military suicides given that our all volunteer troops are being CONSTANTLY redeployed rather than allowed to reintegrate into home life to raise their families or live their private professional lives.
Of all the lies, tagging Ron Paul antisemitic because he's an Austrian Economist is dumbest. And the racist card doesn't apply to his views that honor the value of everyone's life. But since assholes will smear lies, ride their bandwagon of shit. /After all, the establishment would never lie./

I guess the question is, what would it take for me to vote third party? Uncle Ron definitely flips that switch, but I'm not sure about the others. For example, I do not trust Huntsman at all, but he seems more competent than Palin. But if he's a competent Obama-Democrat... well, I don't want that. So I don't know where the line is for me in the bottom tier for third party voting. I think my bottom tier right now is Cain, Huntsman, Palin, and Paul.

Anyway, I admit that the style feels a little Baptist preacher to me, which is fine but not something to which I'm accustomed. (If I were choosing purely on style, I prefer Christie's speeches.) It'll be interesting to see if Perry modifies his approach for a place like New Hampshire or for other northern states. He seems skilled at casting his message to fit the audience, but I guess we'll have to wait and see if he can pull that trick off. I am not sure the style would work that well in a lot of the western/mountain states, but that should be an easier slide for him to go less preacher and more 'rancher.'

254 I was thinking about Perry's Iowa speech (the Waterloo one) and how well I think it went. I enjoyed listening to it. It didn't sound canned -- more as if he were choosing his words based on notes rather than just reciting pre-written lines.
Did you also check out his announcement speech from Saturday? You know just as a sort of way to see how much he carries over between each speech. I did notice him talking about how he met his wife in both speeches, but they definitely weren't word-for-word repeats.

I read it, but I didn't watch it. But, yeah, it seems as if he selects phraseology on the fly, which is common with folks who are used to speaking in public. (I used to do that back in the day when giving science talks, but they are easier in a way because you have slides for visual cues.)
I suppose it could just be that he's just starting out and the speeches will be more canned as he goes.
Not to start a regionalism flame war, but I do hope he can do a little less of the preacher style when he moves to the northeast and west coast. If Christie backs him (which I expect), it could be helpful if they sat down and he got some tips from him. Rubio also gives a good straight up speech.

Political assassination? Try executing a war criminal. Bin Laden killed three thousand Americans in an act of war. Any response against him is warranted, no matter where he is. Your messiah was playing footsie with the Truthers who believe Bin Laden is innocent when he made his statement.
I've listened to the rest of your stuff before. I'll just point out that Ron Paul! Believes that Bin Laden was there in Pakistan. Evidently he doesn't have access to the intel that you do.

I'd be happy voting for either one, if they got the nomination.
Cain, too, if it came to it.
I'd still prefer Palin. Mostly because I know she'll do two things that I don't trust the others to do (yet). 1) Drill here, now; 2) Push hard to repeal Obamacare (not "repeal and replace" screw that).
Posted by: K~Bob at August 16, 2011 06:38 AM (9b6FB)
So the guy writes something based on someone else's work, doesn't do any research to verify, just repeats bullshit, and gets called on it? That's what you get for just copying stuff. Anybody with a brain would know that at this point in the game, no way is Palin supporting Missing Mittens. Seriously? Poor Pappas needs to get a clue and a new hankie.

Thanks. I'll do that.
I confess I was thinking more about the economics of health care. I kept waiting for specifics from him (he used to be my top candidate when the pool was weaker) and never saw anything that satisfied me.
Yes, he said he'd grant waivers to the states. And, yes, he said he would sign a law overturning Obamacare, but I never saw what his vision was for health care on the national level. That leaves me to extrapolate what was done in Massachusetts (which he has criticized, but not specifically - and not acknowledged how health care delivery has been hurt by Masscare) to the US and I do not want that.
In terms of his economic plan. Perry was asked the classic job-interview question about what he'd do in his first thirty days and gave a good starting answer. Has Romney been asked that question?
My fantasy would be that Romney has developed a really detailed policy piece on health care that he would roll out the day after Perry selects him as his running mate. In that piece I would expect to see gory detailed analysis of the failures of Masscare. Then I'd like to see a map of what the legislative agenda would be coming from the Perry-Romney administration.
For a guy who is supposed to be an expert in this, I have been disappointed by the lack of meat coming from Romney.

1) He's a bit squirrely. Fidgety, and has that Bush-like, shoulder-blades up-and-down laugh. Also moves around just a bit too quickly. Cameras have trouble following him.
2) He has that same Bush-like tendency to pronounce the final 's' sound of a word with enough extra emphasis-ss to make it a whole 'nother syllable.
Neither of those would stop me from supporting him, but they definitely work against him in the general. Also, since he's been the Gov. for so long, these traits are not going to change before next year. So consider his podium technique cast in stone.

Word.
RS McCain has a blogpost up at the American Spectator bleating for a comment from Palin, after disclosing his affiliations with and warm regards for Hillyer and Pappas.
Eff that.

I was biased against him by what "everyone" said here before making the effort to prove him wrong by what he actually writes and fights on behalf of a consistently constitutional conservative agenda.
The difference between us is the degree of satisfaction one takes in believing rumors.
You claim to "listen" as data goes in one ear and out the other. I've stated my sources repeatedly. Steve Pieczenik initiated the CIA counter-terrorist program, and related the CIA info on bin Laden's death years ago. It is you who fail to actually research and fail to follow a point through to its logical conclusion. You failed to dispute the outcry from within the Military establishment regarding the rate of suicides, and the disillusionment of our troops being perpetually re-deployed. You don't want to read reports, easier to stay in denial remaining in ignorance. You might be criticized for advancing logic against the sway of emotionalism ruling the day.
You'd act as though you're only a smorgasbord believer in the establishment while it has you hook, line and sinker.

Anyone who doesn't meet the qualifiers is scheduled for political defeat in 2012 anyway, so who cares what they say?

Don't even get into this, because there's no way you're objectively going to prove that Martha Coakley is more conservative than Scott Brown. It's a fool's errand even to try. All you'll do is arouse the libido of a few RINO-hunters who are still angry we won a House majority despite their best efforts.

Because she was wrong. And when told she was wrong, refused to offer an apology.
To which you go, boo hoo, I get it, but this speaks to two things here.
1. As evidenced in this thread, there are a lot of conservatives out there who can't come to grips with the fact that yes, your beloved Mama Grizzly is not perfect and does make mistakes like this.
2. Whether you believe or accept it, there is a perception of her from some that she has a history of showing insensitivity to criticism or being thin-skinned. Not simply about the hardcore blood libel smears, I mean every perceived slight or insult, and this goes back to when she was governor of Alaska. That's a temperament that doesn't really work well for an executive. It's one of the reasons why Obama's "adult in the room" schtick is so laughable.

Wow... I would be destroyed too... poor Alex Pappas. Once a fine young reporter with his whole life in front of him and now so totally broken down by these words from Sarah Palin that some other bloggers have come to his rescue to try to save his soul.
You know how many times I have seen the same story on The Daily Caller with edits and different headings and posted in different parts of the site? I have commented on a story in the morning and after returning a few hours later, find the same story under a different headline and in a different location.... without my comment...

Besides if Paul Ryan jumps on the bandwagon and christie or rubio as is rumored and rudy is willing to take VP, then it's all up for grabs. Heard rush for a short time today and he thinks the entrance of Perry signals a game changer since no one thought that mittens could be challenged. So now of course the field is going to open up and people who dared not challenge mittens and the hierarchy of the republican party all of a sudden are going to have second thoughts.
If I was Sarah, I'd take former VP nominee and media celebrity making the big bucks on speaking fees over failed presidential primary candidate any day.

There is nothing wrong with what Perry said. It is a bit extreme, but I fully agree with him. Assuming that Bernanke is not utterly incompetent, and that he knows what he is doing, to print more money would be just that, an act of incompetence at best, and an act of subversion at worst. Maybe not Treason, but close. Assuming he is not a fucking moron which he is from all appearances. Everyone that Prezident Urkel brought on board were left wing sycophants who would die if they had an originial idea and a cold drink of water. Of note is that when Perry says something he stands by it and defends it when called on it. Obama does not do either. He simply lies, mumbles, or ignores the entire matter. But he sure salutes pretty for publicity photos.
