The point isn't whether or not Sandusky was engaging in Democrat love. The point is that Paterno had substantive reason to believe that Sandusky was. If he didn't report it, he's complicit, because even if it the report had later turned out not to be true, at the time Paterno couldn't have known that. You might be interested in knowing what being raped by an adult man does to a boy. I'm 49. The last time I had sex was in 1997. Ben...I wasn't aware of the PA law.  My wife is a CLSW in NJ.  About six years ago, we found out that a long time family "friend" was pedophile who had victimized my daughter, my sisters, his own daughters and his grandchildren, as well as potentially many others.  Members of his family did not wish to bring the matter to the police, as some members of his family believed the accusations were questionable.  My wife, due to her profession, is legally obligated, and could have faced losing her license if she did not report the scumbag to the police.  She did not personally witness any abuse, but, due to the disclosures made to her, she had a legal obligation to inform the police.  What I'm saying is that, even if Paterno did not personally witness the child abuse, there are certain professions that are required to report even the disclosure of such information to the proper authorities.  I do not believe that the next rung of the chain of command of a college football program qualifies as the "proper authorities".

Probably.  Of course that can happen at just about every college in the country.  Usually a coach won't do that because he would want another job coaching somewhere else so can't pull a scorched earth policy.  Going down and going to jail, he's not worrying about another job.

I had an Army buddy who for years thought that he was a homosexual, and a pretty messed up one at that. His life was horribly fouled up -- booze, drugs, etc. Eventually he came to realize that he had suppressed being repeatedly raped by a man when he was a young boy. By the time I knew him he was a happy father & husband, one of the most peaceful and kind men I've ever known. When he told me what he had been through I was absolutly floored.

He found his healing & peace in Christ. Peace with himself & peace with what he had suffered -- he'd be the first one to tell you that. I'm not trying to convert you, but I am saying that there is hope out there for a "normal" life if you want it. He found it, I assume you could too.

The thing about rape is that it affects everyone differently. We're born with different abilities to handle trauma. The same acts perpetrated on different people will have different results. I was an infant when it began happening, and it lasted for years.

I appreciate your comment. I posted my own experiences in order to let people know that these crimes will often create psychological and emotional damage that can't be overcome. That's why Paterno's reaction is so terrible. People don't like to think this is true, but some of us who experience this will simply never recover. We try everything, and nothing works. There is no peace to be achieved. The best we can hope for is distraction.

As I said before, I'm not religious. When you've had so much taken from you and have spent so much of your life in bondage, sometimes it becomes impossible to submit to anyone or anything, even God. I've never been able to give myself to a deity in the way required for the acceptance to be sincere.

That's the problem: Some of us just can't give of ourselves, even to God. The damage is too severe. It's like sociopathy or psychopathology. No amount of counseling will change a sociopath or a psychopath. They have different brains. I'm sure that my brain is different, due my formative experiences. The question that haunts me is whether my soul is different, too. That's a frightening prospect. It's in the hands of God, if He's out there. He must decide what happens to me after this life is over, because I've gone as far as I can with what I have.

First he goes to his father, and asks him what to do.  Then he goes to Joe Pa, his "godfather", and tells him he had seen something very bad.  (It seems that how much he told Joe Pa is open to debate).  I think this guy was absolutely shaken to his core, and did not know what to do.  He figured if he told Joe Pa, HE' D know what to do!!  McQueary just wanted it to go away.

I am not trying to excuse the inexcusable here.  I am trying to explore what his mindset MIGHT have been.  And I think this mindset explains the actions of the PSU kids who were rioting.  Their god had fallen off his pedestal, tainted by unspeakable evil.  Rather than try to wrap their heads around their new reality, they lashed out, trying to hold on to the bedrock crumbling beneath them.

An isolated institution combined with an equal amount of extreme loyalties can become a very unstable mixture when exposed to very bright light...

Indeed.  The last provision of the Pennsylvania child abuse reporting law protects those who report suspected child abuse from being fired or discriminated against "as a result" of  reporting it.  As I said before, the law appears to allow lower level staff members like the graduate assistant to report to their boss instead of directly to authorities.  Arguably, it could apply to Joe Paterno as well, but he's high enough up in the food chain that there should be a legitimate question about whether he could absolve himself from outside reporting responsibility by telling his superiors.

Joe reported to his superior immediately:

You can claim that it was Paterno's responsiblity to phone State officials all you want, but the fact of the matter is that Joe did take the proper actions. Joe did not witness any acts himself, and he used the proper channels within the organization to report the incident....this is typical has been confirmed of other situaitons in other Universities!

As another suspicion regarding Paterno and McQuery:  the AD, VP, and President aren't stupid. They can't enact their cover up without explictly knowing that Paterno and McQueary will go along with it. Otherwise it's suicide for them to try and hush it up. There had to be some kind of an agreement among at least these 5.

As for Sandusky, once they let Sandusky slide in 1998 or perhaps on some other incident, Sandusky would then have had powerful leverage over all of them. It could explain (*not* excuse) why they then continued to cover up for him. After making a deal with the devil, they found the devil wanted to keep doing business.

Not that this story requires one more thing to become even more horrific and strange, but I hope that investigators keep an open mind and leave no stone unturned. Would it be that much more implausible for there to be more than one offender involved? Its not likely, but at this point, nothing should be ruled out. How could  McQueary's react the way he did?

Sandusky no longer had a job with the Team within a year. He retired in 1999 after he was told he would never become Head Coach....by Paterno in person. Paterno, Shultz and Curley were not aware of the Child Protection Agency investigation done in 1998 after similar accusations had been made against Sandusky...Why? Because the police did not make them aware of it, nor did Child Protection Services....why? Probably because the there was not enough evidence, or the victim's family did not want it in the public forum, Yet you blame Paterno..........Unbelievable!

Whichever of these was the case, Paterno's actions should have been the same. I blame Paterno for taking care to do just enough (at best, the legal minimum) to allow Sandusky to continue raping. Give it a rest. Outside of helping in the actual raping, what more could Paterno have done to insure that Sandusky could continue his evil? There were opportunites every day for 7 years (2002-2009) for Paterno to make amends. He waited till he was questioned in a grand jury.

Paterno has not been idicted...yet.  IMHO, he is getting a pass because of his age and position.
