The story of Easter is a reminder of the shared values we have with those who are currently struggling for their freedom in the Middle East.

Case in point...the Resurrection and the Ascension were really two sides of the same coin.

I, too, am imbibing - in my case, a white meritage. Pretty nice.  We don't have enough nibblies in the house, though, so I'm getting a bit tipsy.

ETA for ham is about an hour.  Will start out with a squash soup and probably just have cheesey cauliflower as a side.  I'm feeling lazy.

Well, we don't have kids (which would probably change my views on this) so after years of angst over family relations (none of the problems being political, fwiw, but primarily just unnecessary nastiness) I've come to the view that just because we share some genetic characteristics, doesn't give my relatives carte blanche to torture me.  I give everyone lots of chances, but after that if they can't be pleasant, why spend time with them?

The older the relative, the more slack I cut them.  But even then there's a point at which I've just come to accept that there's very little there to salvage.

Obama: Tax hypocrite

"From the reports concerning the President's tax returns he paid roughly $454,000 and change in federal taxes. Sounds like a lot doesn't it?

It is... to most people. But on taxable income of $1,700,000 it only works out to be a tad more than 26%. Woah! Wait a minute... The President--who had a taxable income of $1,700,000--paid what?

Had he voluntarily paid the rate he wished everyone else in his own income bracket to pay (39%) in federal taxes, he SHOULD have paid $663,000.

But wait there's more... To top off the sundae with a cherry, President Obama got a refund back from the government of $12,000. "

I just screwed up Easter by watching the Speed Channel show on electric vehicles.  The puffery and Obamatron cheer leading for Government Motors was disconcerting.  Also, the number of lies told about the Chevrolet Volt was astounding.

If you believed the numbers, it's revolutionary and it will forever alter America's dependency on oil.  If you know the actual sales figures to date which were not mentioned in the show, you know it's a very expensive lemon far eclipsing the Edsel.

Great Peep video. Maybe I'll use that to segue into a discussion of politics with my b-i-l and f-i-l after dinner.

Coincidentally I'm staying overnight at b-i-l's house in a couple days (part of the process of going to DC to pick up a hand-me-down car that I'm dying to get my hands on), so I probably shouldn't absolutely destroy him in front of his perfectly nice family. But I should.

I owe both him and my f-i-l for years of derisive Bush Derangement Syndrome and they know it.

145 Did you use a glaze?

Nah, I'm feeling really lazy today and I'm already pretty "glazed" from the wine.  Fortunately, it didn't need it.  I like a dry'ish ham with a meaty consistency and this one was really good.

Here's a good (great, actually) recipe I discovered recently for the morons who are trying to eat "healthily" (it actually doesn't taste like it's good for you): farro risotto with ham, squash, and sage.  The key to this recipe is that the squash, which really needs to be grated not the canned or frozen stuff, provides the consistency you'd find in a traditional risotto made with cream an cheese.  You can find farro at either an Italian market or at a grocery store that has a good hot cereal or whole grains aisle (it's often near the Cream of the West hot cereal).

I don't know, Kratos, it happened 6 hours ago and there don't seem to be a lot of details yet.  Even for a burgeoning third-world cesspool like LA is becoming, this is pretty crazy stuff.

Oh... that's kind of sad.

What kind of pup?  Hound I'm guessing.

I'd like to think that my collie wouldn't eat baby rabbits.  She found a baby bird once and just kept snuffling it with her nose.  But I guess you never know.

Wow. I've never tried making a risotto before (although I've watched Giada do it a thousand times) and that looks pretty good. How does the consistency of the squash come into play? I like the flavor but the stringiness puts me off.

154 Wow. I've never tried making a risotto before (although I've watched Giada do it a thousand times) and that looks pretty good. How does the consistency of the squash come into play?

If you grate fresh butternut squash (I use a cheese grater... sort of an annoying step), it basically dissolves as you are cooking/simmering it and produces a pretty creamy consistency.  I've done real risotto with arborio rice before and I'd say the consistency is very similar... although the farro grains always seem to wind up a bit nuttier than the risotto (more chewy).

My only warning about this recipe is that (for my 40-something year old digestive tract, at least) it provides a bit more roughage than you might expect.  Nothing dramatic, but just don't eat a whole pot-full of the stuff!  :-)

Heh, 10-4.

I'll try that soon, tho. I'm always loking for something new when comes to cooking and that fits the bill.

The only problem is that I tend to screw up a new recipe on the first try but that's seems to be my method!
