Perry Blowing Chance To Slam Door Shut On Rivals
— Ace

I said this.

But okay, here's some other people saying this.

I think the best one can say about Perry’s two debate performances is that they’ve been good enough — he is, after all, still the frontrunner in most polls. I think the worst you can say is that, so far, Perry is deeply disappointing to any Republican who wanted a presidential nominee who could naturally and easily articulate a powerful argument for conservative principles and think on his feet.

I'd put it like this: When people buy a car, they like the reassurance that this is the car for them. That there really is no close competitor. That there are no nagging doubts they'll have as they drive away, wondering about the other models. Maybe those were better?

You can close a deal with nagging consumer doubts, but it'll take a long time, and the client will never really be satisfied with his choice.

Although Perry is making a case for himself as a car that's okay, and will get you where you want to go, he's not doing the real job of making would-be buyers think, "Man, why would even look at another car?"

Very meh, okay. Not closing the sale.

On the Gardasil thing, Perry's friends come to his defense.

Video at the link, but here's the print story:

Until you've seen a special photograph, Craig Wilson says you don't know the whole story of Rick Perry's HPV vaccine decision.

"She's happy as hell. I mean, she is just unbelievably ecstatic," Wilson said. "Here she is on a beautiful ranch somewhere, riding on a motorcycle, which she's never really done, with the governor of the state of Texas."

The guy driving the motorcycle is Governor Rick Perry. The young woman on the back is Houstonian Heather Burcham, who was at that moment just 31 years old and a few months away from dying of cervical cancer.

Heather said in an interview prior to her death, "I feel like I'm not going in vain, because I can tell others about it."

When Heather was diagnosed, she set out to tell the world about her illness and the vaccine that would've prevented it. Her fear was that her pain and her death would mean nothing.

She said, "I kept thinking, 'What good can come from this?'"

After Governor Perry got in Texas trouble for signing an executive order in 2007 mandating the HPV vaccine, Heather tried to convince lawmakers to let it stand, and in the process met Governor Perry. But more than a meeting, it sparked a friendship.

Long after the order was rescinded and Perry lost the political fight, they kept talking. Heather had Perry's personal cell phone number and he invited her for a day at a friend's ranch.

Wilson, a friend of Heather's, recalled, "It was a great day, one of the great days of her life. She loved the whole thing."

Months later, when the end was near for Heather, Perry quietly snuck into Houston and sat by her bedside. No press, no statement -- just the governor and one of his 21 million constituents.

"I think he truly had a heart for this young woman," said Mary Lee, one of Heather's friends.

Sob stories don't make Perry's position right, but this does tend to demonstrate that Perry might have been motivated by more than that sweet, sweet $22,000 in Merck retardation money.

I think the thing with that "sob story" is that Perry can't be the one to use it.  Maybe he wouldn't feel right personally talking about it.  Others can, but I mean if you are going there to sit at her deathbed with zero fanfare and then use it during a debate in an effort to score a political point that can come back to bite you in a big way.

And ace aren't you sort of contradicting yourself a bit?  You want Perry to come out swinging and knock them down, but before the first debate you were talking about him needing to be careful how he presents himself.

I don't know what you or others are expecting from these debates.  Your attitude has me a little floored, actually.

To me Perry's record is so vastly superior to the other candidates, it's not even close.  Adding on top of that his straight shooting style and I am quite happy with him.  Really, something quite bad would have to happen in a debate for him to move below the others.  Instead what I'm reading about are some misses by him and misses by the others.

Put it another way, I can't think of a single thing Romney could say in a debate that would erase his position on Masscare and ethanol.  And nothing he did in a debate would change the fact that his resume is dusty.

Does Perry's inability to articulate meaningful solutions to SS not bother you? Sure, in print he can say how he'd fix SS, but on stage all he can repeat is "ponzi scheme" - you gotta explain your ideas to fix it, if you are going to make it analogous to a criminal enterprise.

Furthermore, it might be wise to explain -why- it's a ponzi scheme since people are so conditioned into thinking it's not really one.

Perry is not quick on his feet during debates. I want the articulate guy to be on our side for a change.

Bachmann was wrong to question Perry on the miniscule campaign contribution that he received from Merck (his reply to her sucked too).  But Perry was simply wrong to mandate it.  Santorum actually had the right response to Perry.  I'm not sure I totally believe Perry when he says he was wrong to issue the EO but that's my issue to deal with.

Much more worrisome is his overall poor debate performance, especially his TX Dream Act support.  I don't like it, but if he would properly elaborate on the process and why he signed, then I get it.  But don't stand up there and call me a racist Mr Sound of your last name and throw out poor strawman examples (higher ed vs gov't dole your whole life).

68 I was living in Texas when the Gardasil thing came out. My daughter was 8 at the time, and we were getting all kinds of paperwork from the schools concerning the vaccine. And yes, they were talking about giving it to girls younger than 12. I said I would opt out, and that was the end of it. There was no fuss from the schools-they would let her continue to attend, unlike their position on MMR and DPT, which I support, by the way. Perry owned up to his mistake with the way he handled the mandate of the vaccine. I completely understand WHY he wanted it-to save the lives of underage putanas. But he realized that his Bible-belt constituents were hell bent on their girls NOT being forced to take the whore-vaccine, and he acquiesced, with an apology. So as far as I am concerned, he did the right thing, both politically, and morally. I haven't seen any of the other candidates owning up to mistakes, and saying apologizing-a real apology, not a "it's your fault if you didn't understand what I was saying " apology. Therefore, I'm sticking with Rick unless he really screws up.

Ace - Perry does a lot better at giving a speech and at a rally.  Not surprising, a lot of politicians are better at that, and are weak at the debate game.  We could expect Ryan to dazzle us at a debate (like Gingrinch), but it is hard to see them give a great stump speech.  So what is more important in the long run?  You kind of need to do both, and it would be great if you could perform in both areas, but few politicians are so gifted.  If I recall Bush was not a great debater, but neither was his competition (particularly Gore). So by sticking to his basic talking points he came off very well (though my perception may be solely shaped by SNL).

Anyway, do you think there is a strategy in his debate performance - to try to appear measured in his response?  Do you think he just has trouble making cogent arguments on his feet?  Could he simply be overcoached?  Or is he just still a little uncomfortable?  I would guess a little of all the above.

I think it is entirely possible that there are more stories like this that could be told about Perry. Sure the guy's a politician, but he apparently has a good heart. Probably couldn't hurt any if some of these stories made into the media, or at least the blogosphere - as long as they come from other sources besides the Governor.

Now, if he could just shore up his immigration policy . . .

I also think at some point the Republican candidates who are trailing need to recognize they are not helping their constituents one iota by piling on the front runners.

79 @35
Let's see, he entered the fray about a month ago.  No, it does not concern me that he hasn't released a detailed plan on Social Security.  And I am certainly not bothered by his use of "Ponzi scheme" as a descriptor for the failed system.  It's a figure of speech that drives to the heart of the matter.

I just checked Mitt's website to see if he's put up a detailed plan on fixing Social Security (or does he think it's broken?  it's hard to keep up).  Here's what I found:

Over the course of his campaign, Mitt will propose the specific steps he will take as President to ensure the long-term solvency of Medicare and Social Security. While reforms are needed, Mitt also believes that these changes should not reduce benefits for current seniors or break the promises they have relied upon for their economic security in retirement.

So Mitt, who has been unemployed since the last campaign, still has not detailed plan, but I am supposed to be worried about Perry?

Romney has been my back up, but if he continues to demonize Perry to seniors, he's going to lose that status with me.

82 Gov Perry came to visit us in Iraq in 2009.  I pulled together as many Texas troops as I could.  He talked to us about what was happening in Texas, what was happening in the rest of the US.  He then pinned some combat badges on some of my soldiers and even punched them (lightly) in the chest.  I thought that was pretty cool since that's frowned upon these days.

He then stayed as long as he needed to in order to let every soldier, marine, airman, sailor talk to him and get a picture with him if they wanted to.

He's a genuine guy, and I've met him several times now.  He cares about his citizens, and he really cares about those of us in uniform.  As a commander, as a manager, as a worker I can say I've made lots of decisions that in hindsight were not good ones.  Perry has done and said the same, which is more than I can say about most politicians.  He learns from his mistakes.

He's a genuine guy.  He doesn't wear mom jeans, funny safety goggles or walk around with his chin up in the air looking down at the rest of us plebians.  He does carry a pistol when he's out for a run, however, which is awesome.

He's in the lead for a reason.  Good enough for me.

Romney is a draft candidate: meaning he drafts on the work of others but is never able to sell himself without looking greasy and shiftless (Nixonesque?). So a Rubio or another Govenor could come a courting at this point. Outside of Newt, none of the candidates show the ability to fillet fish and turn tables. They all seem like deers in the headlights. I am told that Perry learns from his mistakes and recovers in elections, so I will give him another chance. But like I say, there is plenty of time to find the right guy/gal.

88 "I think the worst you can say is that, so far, Perry is deeply disappointing to any Republican who wanted a presidential nominee who could naturally and easily articulate a powerful argument for conservative principles and think on his feet" Yeah, I was hoping for the same polish Romney brings to a debate, coupled with an obvious sincerity. I think we have the sincerity, less so the polish. Hopefully, we'll start to see improvement. But you know, for all the descriptions of Reagan as "The Great Communicator," let's be honest here: I cringed through his press conferences and debates. The words did NOT come out of his mouth easily, with perfect syntax. He often seemed to start a new sentence in the middle of one. Sometimes it seemed he wasn't even remembering the question he had just been asked. All of which goes to prove: the fact Perry is not as polished and glib as used car salesman has little to do with what sort of President he'd make... and also, with his electability. It would seem the latest polls bear that out, in Florida: precisely those answers that should - according to common wisdom - hurt him, in fact appear to be making him more popular. After a "Lost Decade," Americans want to hear the TRUTH, and lack of polish seems to equate to authenticity in voters' minds.

No, Jeff, they aren't.

Mitt Romney has won one election his entire life, and wouldn't have won reelection.  He spent millions in Iowa and lost to a southerner who pardoned a thousand people.  He lost the primary to a man who was politically dead in 2006.

He's a man who said his favorite novel was Battlefield Earth and he once strapped a dog to the roof of his car.  We know these things because he told us...for some reason.  His political instincts are terrible and an Obama with a billion dollar warchest will successfully paint him as an out-of-touch weirdo.

When he attacks ObamaCare, Obama will gleefully point out the similarities between it and RomneyCare.  When Mitt angrily tries to say that's different, independents will see he's a phoney.

He also would lose his home state handily.  The last person to win who did that was Nixon in '68.

I'm not disagreeing but I can't do another Bush. He was simply impossible to listen to. It was terrible - though it did get better further into his term.

Perry, during the debates, reminded me of Bush in that a coherent thought was difficult to come by. Sound-bytes, fine. And I get the format doesn't really allow itself for long answers. But Perry really would serve himself well by working on long form answers and a little depth to his beliefs.

don't believe in AGW? You should immediately be launching into cosmic rays, hundreds of thousands of years of temperatures, etc etc etc.

Think SS is a ponzi scheme? You need to immediately launch into the fact it was a scam from day one (57 was median age, 65 was retirement age - most people never got anything out of it, now that they do, its collapsing). Originally 9 workers per retiree, now its less than 2. Leftists and righties both agree its a ponzi scheme (well, they do during non election cycles). Etc etc etc.

This is my problem with Perry. Depth.

109 There is no denying that Perry has a unique appeal that the other candidates don't.  Real or imagined, important or not, he exudes a masculinity that is woefully missing from anyone else.  People are intuitively drawn to that in a leader.  I'm not looking for some Nancy Boy pants to elect.  A Mr. Soft Hands.  I think he's being beat up a little too hard with just two debates under his belt...the first one being lamer than lame.  Yes, he could be a bit more polished and forthcoming with answers that reflect a sure-footedness.  He just got his damned toe in the water.  I'm not going to chop him off at the knees yet.

These are cancers that are linked to risky behavior. I don't give a rat's ass what other people do in the sack, as long as I don't have to see it. But if you are going to participate in risky behaviors, it would be wise to minimize that risk with appropriate protection.

Yeah, is that the one with Google and the questions from the public?  Should be horrible.  I think Perry should consider skipping it, actually.

And CoolCzech is right, as he often is, about Ronald Reagan.  He was toe curling in things like press conferences (I honestly don't recall much about the debates).  His ability to communicate directly to the American people - to reach them on their terms - was the thing that made him a great politician, not his agility in verbal sparring.

143 87, There may be 14 months left until the general but there aren't 14 months left for people to jump in.  Iowa is Feb 6 and NH primary Feb 14.  SC follows shortly, and then Super Tuesday is March.  Anyone who's not in now, hasn't been fundraising and buildng a national org is not running.  That's why I believe Palin is NOT running.  You've got to have boots on the ground to shore up support in your state.  No matter how "popular" Palin is with her supporters, it's not enough support to win primaries.

Posted by: Jon in TX at September 15, 2011 01:11 PM (lRqIF)

144 The mandatory nature of the vax was/is the problem for me.  I have read that by making it mandatory, albeit with an opt out, the EO would force the insurance companies to pay for what is a very expensive vaccination.

If that really was Perry's intent on that score, I want him to say it himself.  It's understandable, and maybe forgivable, even if aggravating.

It's interesting reading moki's experience (post #69). At the time, national press made it seem like every girl in Texas MUST take the vacinne or else. Currently, the opt-in, opt-out situation is just not being explained well and sounds like a horror plot while Perry comes across as squish. It doesn't matter what reality is, when someone is watching a soundbite debate.  Posters here take the time to get educated about the candidate and track record, but it's stating the obvious to say that most people don't.

We live in a free society (at least we used to), so I don't look kindly on government when it tells me what to do. In fact I hate it. So if government tells me that I have to vaccinate my kids, there better be a really good reason for it. Preventing disease that can be prevented by behavior modification is exactly the kind of nanny-state bullshit that raises my blood pressure.

We have to accept the reality that a free society places its citizens at slightly greater risk in exchange for those freedoms. Case in point: Anti-terrorism measures that erode our civil rights are a huge issue. If this were a totalitarian nation, our government would simply impose those measures for our safety. Yes we would be safer, but less free.

Well, her "nuke" turned out to be an obvious dud, and now she looks like what her critics said of her all along... like a bit of a flake. So let's facr it: none of us want Newt, for obvious reasons. Ron Paul, it is safe to say, will not win. Cain demonstrated perfectly that, good intentions aside, some political and government experience DOES in fact matter. Hunstman is a man without a party. Santorum is simply not catching fire.

That leaves Perry vs. Romney.

Well, yeah I think Bachman is done too.  But she won't be dropping out soon, and possibly not until after Iowa or even South Carolina.  And I don't see any of the others dropping out, and none of them are up there with Romney and him.  So why should Perry worry about slamming the door shut on them?  And with Romney its going to be a marathon not a sprint.  Best bet is to let the others risk knocking themselves out, defend your record when they try to go up against you, and slowly increase the pressure on Romney.

215 147 The mandatory nature of the vax was/is the problem for me.  I have read that by making it mandatory, albeit with an opt out, the EO would force the insurance companies to pay for what is a very expensive vaccination.

239 Perry screwed the pooch on how the Gardisil decision was implemented and admits it. Says he made a mistake. If he had to do it over again, would do it differently. That issue aside, his body of work suggests that he has the instincts and propensity to make decisions in a way that most here would agree with most of the time.

Mitt screwed the pooch with Romneycare. He defends it. That issue is not inconsistent with a body of work that suggests that he has the instincts and propensity to grow government and make it a more consequential presence in our lives.

Anyone looking for a dramatic departure from Obama should probably look for someone that has a dramatically different track record of decision making. Romneycare, and the instincts that are responsible for it, are not that departure.

I beg to differ on those counts. First, let the winnowing happen in the primary ballot process ('08 primary season discussions here polled how best to improve the RNC Primary system) rather than winnowing through RNC predetermined insider outcome or according to special interests, this site representing its own version of such. Second, there'd be no debate between the Perry and Romney twinsies. Each primary candidate represents a contingency within the GOP. Let them debate instead of insisting on only hearing your favorite lines, and mandating that everyone else adopt them because you presume to know best. That process simply covers the inability to debate.

This is true in TX and I believe nationally.  If mandatory, most insurance companies and Medicaid would have been required to pay.  An opt in solution would have made the program too expensive for the most in need.

Hm. She's 90 and walks/jogs 2-5 miles per day and goes to the gym for resistance reps and physical therapy. It's like she wants a medal for not having a disease. Ok, mom, you exercised before anyone else (now they'd give you adhd meds, but ok). You're awesome. Yawn.

I walk 4 every goddamn day. Her problem is is that I hate it while she thinks it's so great.

286 "Can increase the risk" is the medically correct way of saying "we think there's a link, and it looks like there might be a link, but there's no definitive was to say there's a link"

No, that's not true.

What they are hedging on is whether or not a cell infected with HPV later on undergoes transformation into a cancerous cell.  Multiple events need to happen.  The virus needs to find the cell.  The cell needs to take up the virus.  The virus needs to transform the cell.  There's a success/failure rate at each step, but the linkage between some strains of HPV and cellular transformation to cancer is established.

Perry is the last one to be making that case. I know thats not popular to say here but it happens to be true. Palin has been sniping at Perry lately (his turn in the barrel for Polly Purebread) about crony capitalism and while the HPV thing is relatively small potatoes there are huge potato fields yet to be plowed. And she and many others know it. People can say "Well thats just how they roll in Texas" but I don't think thats going to play. He will have tons to explain as this thing roles forward and so far he hasn't proved very good at it. I don't buy the crocodile tears that some of you are crying about Romney attacking poor Rick. Poor Rick came out of the gate taking shots at Romney for what else, Romneycare. Perry is attempting to scare people with Romneycare!! And it sure isn't like some of you don't like taking shots at Romney, fact based or not. Perry is supposed to be the Marlboro Man. Toughen up, buttercup. This is politics at the highest level and if he can't take shots from Nancy Boy Romney the Dems will eat him alive. I also dont need to worry about him trying to put a different form of Obamacare in its place. What matters to me is where he stands on these issues. He will be squishy on abortion, AGW, social security, spending and taxes.
All I have to worry about with Perry is that he would be a squish on immigration. That's one issue to Mitten's 17.

I do not have that confidence in Romney.  I can definitely see him doing his "waivers for everyone" and then pulling a "now that we have time we can tweak government healthcare to really make it work."  Also his "businessman" type may be more of the mindset that government should be doing something to make things better.  And I find Perry being a politician that is pro-business more appealing.  If I had a company and wanted a CEO I might look at Romney, but if I had a company and wanted someone in the government that wouldn't try and do stuff to fuck over my business I'd want Perry.

307 If not, 1 incident in 10 years does not mean he 'has no real principled position on overreach'.

"I've seen OJ on TV like four thousand times, and he was never knifing anybody. That's no killer."

Perry's not a principles guy. That's part of the reason he can't kill-shot other Republicans in debate (but he'll be fine against Obama). He's..."expediency-minded?" A gut guy, and a bit of a sucker for ideas brought to him by people he knows. That's what his record-in-office seems to show, at least.

Fortunately, his gut/buddy instincts have been tempered by the character of his constituency, whose desires he seems to actually almost sometimes take into account—whereas Romney, e.g., just hates you hicks and tells you to suck it.

Perry's other debate problem is that he shows a certain uh inadequacy that, when displayed by, for example, Palin, signals an urgent need to "go home and study" and "prove it to me" and shit. Because dude's what's known in the trade as "not too bright." (He's smarter than about 85% of people, probably, but...so is Palin.)

That's a problem for him when he's on stage with Gingrich, Paul, and Romney, who can rattle off all kinds of crap about everything, and sound like they always know some shit you don't. But Obama's stone 'tarded, so Perry can roll him, if he just nuts up at him. Obama can't handle that. Hillary's nuts freaked him out. And Perry seems like a nut-up guy. More so than Hillary, even.

He's fine. Fine. He'll be fine.

321 healthcare debate. When the fuck did we ever have one?

You are so right.

Best excuse for an answer is during the '08 general election campaign, as if McCain ever clarified for the public opinion how Republicans would cut the cost of medical treatment. He and Obama debated over "Affordable Health Care" (the legislated title of ObamaCare).

Then there were the Congressional Physicians Caucus who got an hour on C-SPAN on the House Floor one night to define how mandated socialized medicine had bankrupted every state that legislated such, and what simple legal measures they endorsed to lower the costs to patients. Those included removing the cross state line prohibition on policies, enabling small businesses to purchase policies for employees at low cost through a national small business amalgam, and of course TORT reform.

Why our current string of candidates aren't trumping those points is a disappointment for those needing affordable health care.

However, until recently, pregnant women were warned to NOT take medications or be vaccinated. And the vaccines for measles, mumps and (later) polio were fewer and offered to older children than newborn infants.

Late to the thread.

Yeah, Perry may  not be knocking 'em dead.  But he isn't our Obama.  He isn't our Messiah.  He is just a man.  A good enough man.

But still, just a man.

I'm not going to swoon for him.

I'll vote for him.  And if he keeps from fucking shit up worse, I'll consider that a good enough deal.

Anything extra is just gravy.

348 Romney is ok with me but I really think rhe MSM is pushing him because they feel that it will be VERY hard for a Mormon to get elected nationally. His mormonism bothers me  but he is exponentialy better the the Jug-eared One (hell, Biden! would be better). Personally, I want Perry if this is the Repub choices.
On another note, I have started receiving Newsweak, unsolicited, for a few weeks now- that is REALLY a dying rag. The latest one had a poll of who you would want as pres if it wasn't a current politician (I think). From memory it was Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Oprah!, George  Clooney, etc. No wonder we are screwed.

This is why I hate these dumbass debates.... The whole election cycle is starting too early these days. The media is the biggest beneficiary of this.

Candidates who rocket to the top have a tough time staying there. So it may well be a good thing that Perry is only a little bit ahead of the others.... He is being targeted enough as it is.

I didn't realize that Gardisil protected against pregancy, Herpes, HIV, Syphillis, Gonnorhea, Chlamydia, and probably a few others I'm missing.  But hey, I guess there's just something wrong with vaccinating your kids against things that they don't have such a high risk of getting from they way you talk.  So why get any vaccine?  They don't protect against all known virus, and you never know there could be a mutation making it immune to the vaccine.  So guess you don't have a problem risking Polio and Hep B.

Oh and if 70% of the population is infected with those 4 strands out of 200, then your "protected against only 2% of the possible viruses" is a bullshit lie by statistics.

____________

Apparently not, Puss.

So far, I have found that it wasn't until 1980 that there were mandatory vaccinations in all 50 states, as a condition of enrollment in school.

In 1960s, only 20 states required vaccinations.....by 1970 29 states.

It all began with the Smallpox vaccine, back in 1809 in Massachusetts. Someone called Henning Jacobsen contested it, calling it unconstitutional, oppressive, etc....same argument that people are saying now with Gardasil.....it went to court, the court dissagreed with him. So it became law....in MA.

I still have not been able to find out how each vaccination became mandatory.

Whether they were by legislative actions, judicial decisions or by executive orders.

364 84 Gov Perry came to visit us in Iraq in 2009. Posted by: MW In Texas Thanks for sharing your story. I enjoyed it!

373 Actually I think Perry has been very shrewd. When he first entered the race he did so the same weekend Bachmann won the Iowa straw poll, upstaging her moment of glory. Almost immediately thereafter he says Bernanke's actions border on treasonous, which the media interpreted as being too conservative. He follows that up in the first debate by labeling SS a Ponzi scheme (correctly), which had the dual benefit of bolstering his conservative credentials while putting Romney in the uncomfortable liberal position of trying to defend SS. In the 2nd debate he let Bachmann destroy herself over the HPV vaccine. And he hasn't even begun to use the Romneycare club. From where I sit Perry looks to be doing fine while remaining very likable - the importance of which can't be overstated.

I just can't see any excuse for a Governor or  President to make shots manditory, via executive order.  That type of thing is barely on the list of things Governors should worry about let alone issue executive orders about.

It showed a very bad tendency toward totalitarianism.  Unless there was some immediate danger... like a flu epidemic, why would an executive order ever be used like that?

Rick Perry is power hungry.  And he wants to impose his personal values via executive order... that doesn't sound conservative to me.

Petunia, in case you are reading-impaired.....the Gardasil vaccination is expensive. Perry wanted people to be able to get it for free if they couldn't afford it...... The only way to do that is if it were mandatory. Then, insurance covers the cost.

There was an 'opt out' form, for people who didn't want their daughters to have it.

Mandatory vaccinations have been around for a long time.....it is the standard way that diseases/viruses have been wiped out. You had to get several vaccinations to attend school.

without revealing to your daughter that she is now only protected against four out of the two hundred known variations of HPV, is a Darwinistic experiment. One which may take half a century of misery to discover the eventual outcome. I'm placing my bets on the ability of viruses to mutate and raise havoc with the host. Because that's what they're good at and that's what they do.

But, I hope it works out for you.

Posted by: Public Service Message at September 15, 2011 07:25 PM (IhHdM)

Like I said you lie by statistics.  Yeah it protects against 4 of 200 as you say.  But as someone else pointed out, 2 of those 4 account for the majority of cervical cancer by HPV.  Let's say I own 20 dogs.  I have 4 species of dogs, Beagles, cocker spaniels, labradors and poodles.  So you could say that 20% of the species of dogs I have are Beagles.  But what if I have 15 beagles?  They are still only 1 of the 4 types of dogs I own, but you have a better than 1 in 5 chance that seeing a dog of mine will be a beagle.

A lot of people are referring to the Romney vs. Perry contest as pragmatism vs. purity.  If Perry had a better track record on illegal immigration I would be inclined to agree with the characterization.

But his record on that issue isn't conservative.  Well maybe "Chamcon" conservative, but not "rule of law - preserve language and culture" conservative.  His attitude on it doesn't seem to be much different than Lindsey Graham's.  He shouldn't be casually let off the hook for the awful answer he gave about in-state tuition being accorded to the children of illegals.  If you think that's a sound policy, then we can agree to disagree, but don't insinuate that opposing it means that you just don't like people with a Mexican last name.  His vocal opposition to Jan Brewer's efforts in Arizona was also deeply disappointing.  This is a major issue, and his record on it isn't good.

Romneycare is just as troubling to me.  He should be criticized over it, but he has called for the reversal of Universal Health Care. Perry has called for more boots on the ground and so forth with respect to illegal aliens, but I'm a long way from being convinced that he's going to make it a big priority if elected.

The biggest difference between the two isn't what they propose to do as President.  It's in their electibility.  Whether fair or not, if Perry continues to give lackluster responses to the most basic of policy questions, he's going to come across as GWB redux to the mushy middle.  If he doesn't use more temperate language when he talks about social security, Obama will have a gold mine of campaign commercial fodder to scare the hell out of senior citizens..

I don't know if Perry will get better at this or not.  We'll see.  All I can say is thatt I'd rather win with Romney than lose with Perry.

http://tinyurl.com/3bpwzcm

Y'all do realize not that many people watch debates or politics. I hope you also realize that Ronald Reagan was bashed by the media as an old actor who could not possibly win the primary much less the general election. It is early and a long time before people start paying a lot of attention.

ABO Party but hope it is Gov. Perry.

Or it could be that Carter considers Perry to be easier to beat, and is praising Romney simply to hurt his chances of getting nominated.

Or he wants the big O to take him off the 'most crushing recent electoral defeat' top spot.

406 About the debates - more people watched Rizzoli and Isles. They are not that important to most people. Just politically addicted morons like us.

407 >>Or he wants the big O to take him off the 'most crushing recent electoral defeat' top spot. How likely is that? There's a reason Romney either beats or is within the margin of error on virtually every Romney vs Obama poll. Hack on him all you want, he wins pretty much every debate he enters. He is very smart and very fast on his feet. I keep hearing about all these elections Perry has won, so why has he been so weak in the debates? This ain't Texas anymore. Either one will do, Romney would be much better. Long way to go.

408 Y'know, the issue for me is not that an HPV vaccine was mandated, although he really should have from a herd immunity standpoint mandated it for both boys and girls. The issue is that Merck made the donations and the EO was done soon after GlaxoSmitheKline applied for approval of Cervarix, which was approved in Aus and the EU in 2007 but not in the US until 2009.

409 "he wins pretty much every debate he enters."

And loses pretty much every election he enters, except for once.

The Executive Order was signed in early February.  It looks like they applied for approval in late March.

As usual, Dick Nixon hits the nail on the head, rings the bell, and is entitled to the cigar or kewpie doll of his choice.

412 Oh and buzzion, you're doing pretty good in your running gun battle, too.  Public Service Message (if that's even his real name, ha) is playing fast and loose with statistics in order to, ironically, claim that you don't understand math.

413 In the long run, the fact that he's 'nuanced' on the range of issues is going to pay off. There's his position on energy production, which day by day is becoming pretty much indistinguishable from Obama policy - except folks have a lot more reason to believe Perry is telling them the truth. There's his use of STIM money to benefit Texas; don't expect any huge freakin' STIM from him in the White House, but there could well be a bunch of smaller, more focused ones, which he can get thru Congress where Obama can not. There's his position on the death penalty - sure, some innocents may have died, but a lot more guilty ones had it coming, and folks are prepared to have the technically innocent pay the price to maintain the moral line on there being an actual cost to killing innocents. Then there's his position on Gardisal - which science is actually supporting, regardless of whether you want to believe he took a pay-off for five or thirty thousand, which no one really can make any sense out of; I mean, for those here inclined towards not actually causing death to their significant others, we should actually be gargling with the stuff. But nuanced is one thing - crazy with brain spasms is another (at least for now; even the NYTimes is after her), and pulling more reverse stunts than Flipper is a complete other. The Obama operatives have been saying they'd rather face Perry than Romney ... and Republicans are supposed to believe them? That's got to be from when they expected to maybe face underperforming Bachmann, not undefeated Governor Perry. It's not just the left who think the Mittster is the most unprincipled opportunist in modern electoral history -- he's been around so long, his brand is impressed n the mushy middle.

The Palinistas and Paultards would be happy handing the nomination to Romney rather than have an electible conservative steal attention away from their presciousssssss unelectable candidates.

The Ronulans aren't conservatives at all - they're moderate RINO supporters of the kind of establishment Republicans who betray the country every time they're in power.

As for Bachmann supporters...is there even such a thing any more?  The woman herself is a whack job and a flake.

I'll take my chances with Perry.

And one other thing...if the GOP nominates Romney, I'll quit the party and stay home on election day.  If Bush didn't destroy the Republican brand, Romney certainly will.  And I want nothing to do with a party stupid enough to nominate this career office seeker with no principles.

BTW..."Ronulans" was a typo.

I meant Romulans - ie, Romney supporters.

417 Perry is a shitty candidate.

Guys a moron.

And his hokie talk is embarassing.

You guys sure do know how to pick winners.

And someone tell him to change that crappy toupe.

418 Damn... comin' in on the tail end of this scrum... That's OK.
Haven't run through EACH AND EVERY ON OF THE COMMENTS HERE, but being who I am I can guess what it's all about, knowing Ace and the folks who comment here ('specially the 'parrots').

Perry is a failed candidate. Dude has too much baggage as Governor of Texas to escape.

Same goes for the GOP robot called Romney.

Y'all want to try to not lend any credence to Sarah Palin because she's a 'quittter' and she's 'STOOPID' and she's 'just another Michele Bachmann'.

You DA's can KMNWA... collectively... but not all at once. The chafing from that  might be unbearable.

When she takes off the ghillie suit and joins the fight, we're going to see WTF a goddamn primary is about.... and it should be about ideas... about policy... about how we act towards our enemies and friends abroad... about our DOMESTIC energy policy.

Your guy Perry is a fookin' squish.
Romney is a fookin' squish times eleventy kazillion.

There's one person at this point in time who has taken the friggin' machine on and WON because it was the right thing to do.

<drumroll>

Hello, Madame President.

420 Sob stories don't make Perry's position right... Government-by-Oprah is a rotten idea whose time has come. Whoever whines the loudest and acts the most pathetic gets the gooberment goodies. Hard cases make bad law.
