— DrewM While we wait for Ace's debate opus, some news from two guys who weren't there.
First, via Major Garrett, Texas Governor Rick Perry starts to make the rounds.
PerryÂ’s recent out-of-state trips, including his appearance tonight in the Big Apple, have heightened interest, and scrutiny, about Perry jumping into the GOP presidential primary. Perry bashed Barack Obama in Los Angeles on Sunday and his speech scheduled at the Grand Hyatt near Grand Central Station this evening had originally been a slot reserved for businessman Donald Trump, who is now out of the running.Perry also will head to North Carolina for a meeting of the Republican GovernorÂ’s Association, and this coming weekend he will hit New Orleans for a GOP event that looks a lot like a cattle call for White House hopefuls.
...
“I have a lot of out-of-state travel that some might analyze that ‘Oh he’s got a game plan and they’re implementing it.’ That’s not correct. There’s not a game plan,” Perry said. “I’m giving it some thought. There are a lot of people calling and saying, 'Hey, we would like you to consider getting into the race.'”
I know a lot of people are excited about Perry but I think a lot of it is based on 2nd and 3rd hand accounts. I'm not saying he won't be great, I just don't too many of us who aren't in Texas have seen him in action. He seems to have a strong story to tell, so I'm looking forward to him getting in the mix.
Jon Huntsman on the other hand, not so much.
I watched last night's debate and had many thoughts on it, none of them however were, "You know what this field really needs? A candidate like Jon Huntsman who wanted a bigger stimulus and who called Barack Obama "a remarkable leader" in a non-ironic way."
But run he will.
On his Facebook page Monday, Mr. Huntsman posted: “I’m getting into this because we’re about to hand over a country with $14.2 trillion in debt, $100 billion in spending per month, 9.1% unemployment, and no relief in sight… for the first time in history we’re facing the prospect that the next generation are going to get a country… that’s less good, less capable, less competitive than the one we got. And I say that’s totally unacceptable.”Mr. Huntsman joins the field after a two-year stint serving as the U.S. ambassador to China, a post Mr. Obama tapped him for at the outset of his presidency. In order to win the nomination, the former Utah governor will have to convince Republican primary voters that his service in the Obama administration shouldn’t disqualify him as a candidate.
...
Mr. Huntsman has said he will stake his prospects on a strong showing in New HampshireÂ’s first-in-the-nation primary and forego IowaÂ’s first-in-the-nation caucuses where social-issues conservatives hold more sway. He attributed the decision to his opposition ethanol subsidies, a stance Iowa corn farmers may oppose but wouldnÂ’t necessarily disqualify him to the rest of the electorate.
Mr. Huntsman supports same-sex civil unions and has advocated for legislation to curb carbon pollution, two positions that could put him at odds with conservative Republican primary voters.
Want some more Huntsman goodness? He won't attack Obama by name. Yeah, what could wrong with that plan?

I don't understand why Huntsman would get in? There are already a glut of second tier candidates.
Is he some amazing speaker or debater or something? Does he really think he's going to stand out amongst the second tier players, especially considering some of them are fairly good speakers and debaters?
What's his path to winning the primaries?
Does he have appeal in Iowa, New Hampshire, or South Carolina?
Does he think he can sell himself as Romney but without Romneycare and AGW?

He was always fairly conservative (on today's scale). Indeed, that's why he left the Democrat party however many years ago (16? he's not a Johnny-come-lately, exactly).
Former Aggie, former Ag Commissioner (his last post as a Dem, I believe). Certainly by the time he was W's Lt. Governor he was pretty solidly conservative across the board.
His position on the border isn't as strong as mine, but it's fairly solid (he's on the "Criminal Justice/National Security" side of that argument, and doesn't care too much about illegal immigration beyond those two concerns). He's good with business and taxes- he has repeatedly resisted raising taxes, and fought just about as hard to avoid tapping into the State's "Rainy Day" fund.
Again, he's got his issues: he'll need to come up with answers that sell (that is, that both explain his position and salve conservatives' concerns) about his over-reach with Guardisil and attempted over-reach with the Trans Texas Corridor, and he'll need to be ready to fight allegations of "cronyism" as laughable as that is with the current President.

Skipping Iowa altogether is a bad idea because it means he'll be out of the spotlight for the entire beginning of the primary season. I guess there's a chance Huntsman could break into the top three in New Hampshire (though at this point I don't see it) but he'll get crushed in South Carolina, at which point he'll drop out.

I guess they're both scared of the anti-Mormon vote, but that was pretty unique to Huck, who ran on a "I'm evangelical and you are too, so I'm your guy." Perry might be able to make that case implicitly, but I don't see that from him from what I've seen. No other candidate will play the Christian identity politics like Huck did.

He can win Iowa, Romney will win NH, Perry then can win South Carolina as they'll vote for a fellow southerner, and then they'll duke it out in Florida.
If Perry can win Florida, then he just needs to contest Romney is some of the northern states like PA, Ohio, Indiana, Montana, the Dakotas, and maybe California.

Texas is just different. I'd guess that any Dem who switch to R in OK would be very similar. Until the last few years, our Liberals just haven't been as crazy as other states'. And, when he did switch, Texas (despite going R in every Presidential election for decades) was internally very Democrat. We had Democrat majorities in the State Legislature for most of Bush's term, IIRC. My parents, in fact, used to make a habit of voting in the Democrat primary even though they were going to vote R in the general. As my mom put it, "The Democrat is going to win, so I might as well help select one I can live with. And then I vote R just in case he somehow wins."

1) eminent domain [financial kickbacks];
2) sanctity of the family unit, rights of parents and children to communicate vs. government forcibly removing all children and sequestering based on false and fabricated charges -- aside from the State producing the false witness, the constitutionally protected freedom for religious practice predates the law [flaunting his West Texas Perry voter base favoritism]; and
3) in order to attend public school, executive order for the arbitrary STD vaccinations of all girls despite dangerous side effects including death and despite the student's sexual inactivity [financial kickbacks].
Think hard about Perry's unprecedented authoritarian and illegal exercise of executive experience as Governor of Texas.

lacey, all that did was establish residency requirements. If a child of illegals was brought over when they were young and attended public school (as the SCOTUS ruled we must educate them), then, in order to receive in-state tuition fees, the student must have resided with an adult for a minimum of 3 years, graduated from HS or obtained a GED in Texas and must sign anaffidavit to obtain legal residence status. They don't get free college, just in state rates. And, in 2005, the law was changed to apply those residency requirements to anyone, regardless of legal status. (except for the affidavit to become legal residents.)

Not a thing on that list that is not explained by State law and/or the truth.

Yup.
As for #1, I'll get excited about that when the left finally rouses themselves to get excited about the Border Patrol agents wrongfully in prison or any of the Americans killed by illegal aliens. Also known as, never.

1: Which case of eminent domain? Find me one that was actually out-of-bounds (as eminent domain is really understood, not some rosy, NIMBY, version). No. TTC doesn't count, because he backed down on that one.
2: ??? What? Linky, please.
3: As has been beaten to death, the only thing required to get out of having your daughter vaccinated for HPV was to fill out a (relatively speaking: this is the government, after all) short form that said, "Thanks, but no thanks" and you're done.

So I hear on the radio this morning that the Texas state legislature has passed a bill allowing incandescent lightbulbs manufactured in Texas to be sold in Texas. It's going to Rick Perry to be signed.
HAH.
Reason 2,347 why moving to Texas from craptarded Illinois was the smart play. And I offer to help out mpurin if he falls behind on the light bulb orders from those of you in other states less enlightened.

Au contraire, I am excited about Perry but I don't like him. This is what happens when we are stuck with an announced field of candidates who completely suck.

I completely understand the reasons for not having the vaccination. However, having had teenagers, I would still have them vaccinated for everything you can. If they had a vaccination for "stupid risk taking" and "stupid stupidness" and "it won't happen to me" then you might be safe with not vaccinating for sexually transmitted disease. As is, you may think she's safe, but she's not. Hell, I'd have them vaccinated for bora-bora fever since at any given time they might decide to use the same beer bong as some random tribesman right off the boat. You just don't know.
It's a stupid thing to get worked up about.

Well, that's the problem, innit? If he's seen as far more liberal (see comments on this thread, for instance) then he's the one who needs to set about changing them. So far, I haven't seen that.

It seems that Palin narrates her ideas better than Perry does.
Preaching balanced budget "why we won't spend the rainy day fund now" rubs salt in wounds of overspending social justice program proponents as the proverbial line is drawn in the sand.
We're voting against the tide of today's commercially addicted American consumerism.
I'd mention a slight contradiction within Perry's memory.
In the Bible story explaining why "the chosen people" seed of Abraham emigrated to Egypt, Jacob/Israel's favorite son, Joseph the interpreter of dreams was sold into slavery by his jealous older brothers, but eventually worked up in rank to serve in the Pharaoh's administration as the one discriminating and doling out stored grain/food to everyone in exchange for things of value (money, tools and property including human slaves).
A moral of that story was to never sell your means for livelihood in exchange for nanny care. Or never sell your legal rights like Esau did for a bowl of porridge.
Biblical Values /God loves the ant more than the grasshopper/sarc off.
Plan ahead for a rainy day (like Noah) since it's either feast, famine or flood. And don't spend all of your money at once, especially don't squander your inheritance on Protecting Prestige or "deserved" vanity like the prodigal son.

'12 particularly with our back against the wall and facing the final battle for America's survival, there's always Luke 12:20,

Unless his strategy is to siphon off Democrat crossover votes from Romney in states with open primaries, he might actually split the Democrats three ways ... Obama or Huntsman or Romney. I have to think about this some more. I doubt Huntsman would get much of the Republican vote but he would stand to dilute the influence of crossover Democrats and Independents in open primary states so maybe his running isn't such a bad idea. It might allow a real Republican to actually win the primary.

Ryan Carbon, I'll link over to read Huntsman's site.
Meanwhile outside of Utah, the only thing that Huntsman has made news with is since governing Utah is being Obama's man in China.
That line of progression brings up relative politically affiliated economic questions. How did the property deals go down and the permissive arrangement for the Mormon temple built in Hong Kong, 1996, and Mormon missionary proselytizing in Red China as English Teachers?
From 2002 quote:
From a financial standpoint, BYU and the Mormon Church are certainly in a position to provide very substantial support to the Chinese universities it chooses to partner with. Time Magazine has described the Church's "extraordinary financial vibrancy":
Its current assets total a minimum of $30 billion. If it were a corporation, its estimated $5.9 billion in annual gross income would place it midway through the FORTUNE 500, a little below Union Carbide and the Paine Webber Group but bigger than Nike and the Gap.
The Church's wealth comes from the "tithe" that it imposes on members — a compulsory contribution of 10% of each Mormon's income. Time reports that in 1996, "$5.2 billion in tithes flowed into Salt Lake City, $4.9 billion of which came from American Mormons."
The Church is clearly very interested in continuing the outstanding growth it has achieved outside the U.S. One reason for its phenomenal rate of increase is its missionary work.

Trump's flirtation to discredit serious scrutiny played Republicans and Michael Savage like a cheap violin for an NBC financial kickback on behalf of Obama's team.

It was 2007. Perry announced he was going. He gave a speech. He went home.
Not smelling much of a conspiracy.
