— Ace Perry's previous debate hits are discussed at NRO.
Perry shouldn't do this:
In 2002, for instance, Perry faced businessman Tony Sanchez in the general election. At the start of their debate, the governor played it safe: He mostly ignored Sanchez’s swipes and listed his accomplishments with a pleasant, steady smile. When a panelist queried Sanchez about a bank of his that was under investigation, Sanchez asserted, “There were two federal judges and three federal agencies who said management and directors weren’t involved [in the wrongdoing]. . . . So I feel very good.”
“Mr. Sanchez, you shouldn’t feel good,” a solemn Perry replied, shaking his head. “You shouldn’t feel good when the federal authorities tell you that there is drug money that came into your bank in cash in suitcases. And then you sent the money to Panama at the request of those drug dealers. . . . You failed the test of leadership.”
Later, Perry lightened up. After Sanchez criticized Perry’s environmental policies, the governor noted, “What Mr. Sanchez didn’t tell you is that he recently told a Corpus Christi newspaper that he would copy Europe and allow Texans only two ice cubes per drink.” As chuckles rippled through the audience, Perry held up two fingers — and half-heartedly suppressed a grin — to illustrate his point. “That’s his conservation plan.” He then shot a glance at his opponent and quipped, “Mr. Sanchez, you’ve been spending too much time in Europe.”
...
Further into the program, Perry questioned Hutchison about her support for the Troubled Asset Relief Program. As she explained the intricacies of her decision process — just as he had planned — Perry played to the crowd, staring off into the distance with raised eyebrows as if to ask, “Is she done yet?”
It's one thing for him to do that in Texas, where people tended to know him. In that situation he can show a little personality, and a little arrogance.
In a debut on a national stage, with millions of people tuning in to see who he is, that's exactly the wrong thing to do. The first goal should to be to let people you're a serious guy, on top of things, smart, in command, not easily rattled.
The joking must wait. Particularly because the last president who had been a governor in Texas loved to tease and had a lot of confidence and charm. Perry's goal is to convince people he's actually not George W. Bush, and he can do that by restraining the personality and just projecting a smooth fluency with policy and principle.
I think he understands that, though. In this interview with Mark Levin, he just explains himself (including his support of the Texas Dream Act, which is not the federal one) and winds up actually getting a blessing from Levin -- not an endorsement, Levin stresses, but Levin calls him one of the several candidates he could support enthusiastically.
If Perry gets cute, jokesy, or swagger-y in the debate, he'll halt his momentum and lose some of it. If he stays on policy, he wins.
I think as a general matter that people have to shore up their weaknesses, not play to their strengths. Strengths are a comfort zone, and people like to stay in comfort zones; but strengths show themselves naturally, without having to emphasize them.
It's weaknesses that people are looking at. Address the weaknesses and the strengths will take care of themselves.
Clarification: I'm talking about the September 7 Republican debate at the Reagan Library, which is Perry's national debut.
Whether he can go after Obama hard, to his face, depends on how much credibility and authority he's amassed at that point (assuming he's the nominee). That's a different question.
Basically my thought on that is by the time the public is that much on your side that you can trash-talk your challenger, you've already pretty much won.
Further Clarification: I see where people are missing my point-- I didn't write it clearly.
I don't want Perry roughing up the other candidates with swagger and jokes. Of course, attack Obama -- but Perry's main goal in attacking Obama is to do so in a way that suggests that Perry knows what he's talking about and Obama doesn't.

However, in the general (and I'd hedge my bets again that Perry will be the GOP nominee), he'll need to be a bit arrogant and draw some blood from The One just to show him bleed. Not browbeat, but be assertive with some timely snark. And if we know Obama, he'll have but one debate if any at all. The last thing Obama wants is to share the stage with someone while defending his record. Perry (or whomever) would have a target rich environment.

I know I consulted for his company, Sanchez-O'Brien out of Laredo.
I finally sent in a bill to them, labelled "SOB Oil Company"

All voters are ready for someone who has a "Presidential" look and feel. No more atoning quota hires. Sadly for them, this urge for a leader-y candidate works against Palin and Bachman, too.
Rick F'ing Perry feels presidential.

I wonder how many Solyndras will be in the new package? At this point the incumbency protection plan surely must be to grab as much taxpayer money as possible, subsidize all political friends, and get a kickback for the election campaign... you know, the Chicago Way.

I liked Palin. She was new, she talked a good game, she had charisma.
I wan't sure about the experience part. She then quit as governor of Alaska (pop. 500,000). I thought this was problematic. Her efforts afterward have not filled me with a great confidence she's up to the task.
If she wants in fine, awesome. Get in and criticize away (I don't know at what, Perry has the same ideology except he's actually been doing it). But her staying on the outside of the tent pissing in is beginning to fray any attachment I had for her. I can see the campaign commercial Obama will run against Perry with Sarah criticizing him before the "TOO EXTREME FOR PALIN" in block quotes. Frankly, what she's doing now with the soap opra drama is counterproductive not only to the party, but to the conservative movement itself.

Nope... Perry should go after him hard... but with humor.
With the things going on, we either need to approach this with Anger, sadness, or amusment.
Anger does not play well long term... sadness? becomes a negative... Humor? if not overdone can be very effective...
And besides, if you LAUGH at Obama? He's going to melt down onstage...
Remember, he is a Beta Male Narcicist... his ego is his way of coping with his own insecurities.... Laugh at him??? He'll blow, IMO.

Blame is to be laid at the feet of Congress, or the economy, or the always popular BOOOSHHH!!!11. Make him own it, make him shoulder the burden of leadership here and now, for the first time in his life.

Remember when one month ago the US, to much pomp and circumstance, not to mention one downgrade, announced a grand bargain raising the debt ceiling from $14.294 trillion to something much higher, with a stop gap intermediate ceiling of $14.694 trillion, or $400 billion more. Well, as of today, or less than a month since the expansion, total US debt is at $14.697 trillion. Yep - the total debt is again over the ceiling, which means the US debt increased by $400 billion in one month. Score one for fiscal prudence. And while the total debt subject to the limit is still slightly less, at $14.652, one week of Treasury auctions and will be time for Moody's to justify again why the US is a quadruple A credit.

Also, I have to agree with some of the other posts up the thread - I'm not sure if Barky will agree to any debates. Especially if he doesn't see any advantage in doing so. And given his poor debate style, I don't think there would be any advantage unless he's so far down in the polls that a hail mary would be needed.

You think that, and I think that.
But there are millions of Americans, some black, some guilt-ridden whites, who will respond to cries of "racism!" like firehouse dogs to the alarm bell. Because of them, the race-baiters will continue to play their games -- and make Big Bucks at it -- and the rest of us will live with the very real fear that we're approaching a SHTF moment as the stuttering clusterfuck of a miserable failure gets increasingly desperate.
As for Ace's contention that Perry take the Ed "Poppin' Fresh" Morrissey road to the election, I can't buy that. If ever the country needed plain truths presented bluntly, and to hell with the "optics," "civility" and "collegiality" some squishes want to see (and will never get from the liberals, even though they whine loudest about it) this is the time.

Perry needs to concentrate on jobs, he is going to get hit by NBC and Politico with things he said in his book. I saw them on Morning Joe salivating to nail him on that. He needs to give a 15 second response and then change back to jobs and what a failure Obama has been.
He needs to ignore Bachman and Romney the same way, 15 seconds on whatever he was asked and then on to jobs.
NBC and Politico are going to be out for blood though.

Posted by: Miss80sBaby at September 02, 2011 01:46 PM (o2lIv)
Ace,
There are two points you've missed in Perry's debating style. The first is it's his style. Americans love boxing, Ultimate Fight Club, and seeing heads crunched on football. Perry being an unPerry will send them voting for Obama because he has no qualms leaving blood on the floor.
The second point you've missed is Perry's debating style. It's his style, not the NRO's. Nobody at NRO, G-d bless 'em all, has ever been governor; with a successful economic track record in a depression, and with all guns trained on them. They screw up, sales may slip - the work that happens is they end up working for Tina Brown.
I'm looking to see whom Perry dominates at that debate, and whom he destroys as a reflex of power. Obama and his cronies have already announced that they will do no less, no matter the price, no matter the method.

Rick Perry’s latest fundraising appeal looks to raise some money off President Obama’s golf game. In an email to supporters Thursday, Rob Johnson, Perry’s campaign manager, asked potential donors to open their pocketbooks to the amount of $76 — exactly the number of rounds of golf Obama has played since entering the White House.
“In honor of his prodigious golf habit, I ask you to donate $76 today – a dollar for each round of golf Obama has played since becoming president,” Johnson wrote.
A golfing theme exists throughout the donation request email, tying ObamaÂ’s handling of the economy to a round of golf.
“31 months, 12 days and 76 rounds of golf later, we still await the president’s plan to create jobs. Or, more precisely, his next plan following the failed stimulus that spent our children’s inheritance, exploded the debt and led to greater unemployment. Now the president wants a mulligan,” Johnson wrote in the email.
“Help us yell a pre-emptive ‘fore’ before the president takes a three-iron to the economy and makes matters worse.”
Well played, governor.

Why?
C. Krauthammer recently opined similarly and suggested that Reagan won the middle by communicating policy and not relying on charisma.

Ace is probably right that this poses a serious threat because people tend to make up their minds really fast about people, and the MSM will spin whatever way possible to help. But over the long haul, if Rick can beat Obama, he's probably going to do it on his authentic personality.
Mitt's been running for Prez for 5-6 years now, and it really shows. That perfect poise, voice, mannerism... that's all focus grouped and perfected. I imagine he's practiced debates hundreds of times while Rick was actually... doing something productive.

Bachmann could have a meltdown and call Perry a gay devil from hell.... And Perry would just blink, and smile, and shake it off.
Ron Paul could start spewing every Alex Jones one-liner that pops into his little brain.... And Perry would just shoot him with an air bullet out of his index finger.
Perry will be fine.

Frankly, what she's doing now with the soap opra drama is counterproductive not only to the party, but to the conservative movement itself....... Posted by: Jollyroger at September 02, 2011 05:03 PM (NCw5u)
-----------
Yeah, Jollyroger. You have nailed it nicely right there.
All this full out carnage towards Perry coming from the Palin camp is really disgusting. The stink is splashing back all over her too.
She never should have started it. It is backfiring on her now, and only making people dig deeper into what Perry is all about.......and people are liking what they find!
Palin cannot run from this bad behavior either. It is all on...*her*.... Her operatives are doing her bidding. And doing the work of the 'lamestream media' for them. Palin of all people should remember how her poll numbers went up when she was relentlessly attacked. But apparently she has forgotten that.
If Palin attacks Perry tomorrow...it will only make her look worse. If she continues with this worn-thin meme of hers that she is "waiting for a good solid conservative to get in this race".....then she fails some more, because Rick Perry is that person.

I agree with Ace. Perry needs to look serious and presidential, not like one of the boys at a tailgate.
If he hits his Repub opponents the hits should be on widely known misteps, like Romneycare. Don't go after Bachman since he's already taken half of her supporters. Ignore Ron Paul except to agree that the Fed has been politicized.

Shhh, be quiet! You might wake them. Yes, to all of the Palin trolls, she quit halfway through her first term. Like it or not that is her record; Period! Deal with it, end of story. If Governor Palin starts sniping at Governor Perry like her cultists then she becomes about as serious a contender for POTUS as Ron Paul. She should back a candidate or step up to the plate and throw some skin into the game. I think that she missed her chance and were she to get on board now and attack Governor Perry she would be seen as shrill and bitter. Hey look at me! Hey, hey I'm over here! Do you see me? Look at me! I think it's too late for her anyway, but hey; Think of the entertainment value we'ld get from her supporters on this blog and others attacking Governor Perry. I can hear it now: Governor Perry conspired with the establishment elitists to keep Governor palin out of the the debates.

I have seen some posters who purport to be Palin supporters making snarky comments, but since the dems like to stir up disinformation, I figure at least half of those are democrat concern trolls and/or disruptors.
I have seen lots of "crony capitalism" charges from the MSM who SAY that this is from Palin, but why anyone believes them I don't know.
Why not wait and see what she says tomorrow?

Well said. I can't help but be defensive when I hear some of the crap coming from this blog and others. I hear the same thing coming from SarahPac and Atlas. I still stand by my assertion that she is better off as a pundit than a candidate. She can play a role in the shaping of the future of the Republican Party and the conservative movement. But as a candidate she's had her chance and her time has passed.

There is a forum in Columbia South Carolina on Labor Day (3-5:30 Eastern) that will be televised on CNN where Perry (+ Romney, Bachmann, Paul, Cain, & Gingrich) will be answering questions (on primarily social issues) from Senator DeMint, Congressman King, & Prof. Robert George.
Full disclosure: my wife works for American Principles Project which is helping put together said forum.

She won't. That troll is a dumbass. The invites were already sent out to all those that were invited to attend, and even if she qualified for an invitation, there was likely a time to respond by for it.

Either they are candidates or not. Either she will run and we will see if she is good, or she won't
Perry wil either do fine in the debate or he won't.
Why people feel the need to insult one or the other is mysterious to me. Direct that anger towards the source of the country's misery: Obama!
For goodness sakes, you gripers are really self-defeating as far as the GOP goes. Assuming, of course, that you are actually Republicans and not pot-stirrers from the left.

324 Miss Marple:
The vitriole coming from the Palinistas and Paulbots has been so outrageous that one has to wonder if it's for real or not. I happen to think a lot of it is coming from those two camps because I see a lot of those same comments on SarahPac, Atlas and MM and we all know that MM and PG are big on Governor Palin and her potential run and have made plainly their feelings about Governor Perry.

Iy's become DUKE and DUKE HQ.all that's missing is the gorilla and the cage. Different strategy for a primary than a general. Look at the primary against Hutchinson, or the run against Strayhorn of the crazy McClellan clan (we were warned) Adios Mofo doesn't really work as an answer, try 'Bless their heart' which has the same connotation.

That's just it. We know for a fact that Obama's people conduct astroturf. It's not wild eyed or anything. they really do that. Furthermore, we know a ton of loser lefties with no real coordination also play moby, posing as a conservative to stir trouble. Some are probably kinda slick, and some are just going for broke nasty.
Then there's the potential one of the Republican candidates has supporters who are passive aggressive enough to take out two birds with one stone. Slander Candidate A posing as affiliated with Candidate B, and Candidate C looks clean.
The only lesson is simply to not take anybody at face value. If someone has a good argument, with good basis, great. But even then you can't hold them to be on the 'side' they claim to be on until you know them over a long period of time.
One thing about liberals is they are too stupid, 99% of the time, to pose as a thoughtful conservative. If they understood our POV they would agree we're right. That's why 'palin fan' sounds so stupid.

Why is he getting snotty when he supported TARP himself? Most of the candidates up there did at the time. And the truth is TARP is not what is driving the deficit today anyway, it is paid back. Perry does not need to get cute when his own record is spotty.
He needs to worry about his immigration record..which Romney is already hitting him on..and some of the stuff he said in his book about medicaid and medicare and social security. I do think people want to see smaller government, but by that they mean fewer rules and regs and bureaucrats, they don't necessarily mean an end to entitlements. He needs to flesh out his ideas in a coherent way and stop with the cracks and the one liners and the off hand remarks.
And this style has not only served Perry all that well in Texas either, last I heard his approval rating was 42%. There are real divisions among Republicans there and Democrats hate the guy.
