Peter Falk, RIP
— Ace

Oh no.

Dead at 83. I think he had retired from the spotlight as his mind was breaking down.

A lot of people will be renting The In-Laws. That's what Jonah Goldberg says he'll do.

That's a great movie, of course, but I think Falk's last role was as a mob boss in the grossly underrated Made.

I can't find a clip of him in that, but here's the ever-annoying/amusing Vince Vaughan.

More: Turns out he was a cool guy in real life, too.

39 One the things I liked about Peter Falk is that he always seemed to be enjoying himself.  No pretensions, no need to show the world how really super big his brain is.

Columbo found Dog at the pound on the NBC MYSTERY MOVIE "Etude in Black." Dog made further appearances in the COLUMBO movies Catch Me, Forgotten Ladu, Make Me A Perfect Murder, and Now You See Him.

When it came to naming his pooch, the Lieutenant considered a number of names like Fido, Jet, Munich and Beethoven, but eventually, he just settled on "Dog" because as he once explained "He's a dog so we call him Dog."

He and Peter were life-long friends, which is why McGoohan did I think at least three episodes of Columbo.

My favorite with McGoohan was the one where he was the political advisor.  He played such a smug, smarmy bastard that I was ecstatic when Columbo nailed him.

82 My favorite episode will still be the pilot.  Yes, there are plenty of other episodes with better plots, actors and dialogue, but I really liked the first one.  It was so original, and I can remember it best.  There was a great piece of dialogue in it where Columbo told the villain how he did what he did.  Yes, his opponents may have had far higher IQs (scientists, writers, and doctors), but they didn't have his experience, and they always left tell-tale clues.  It was also a relief to watch a mystery that didn't waste time on "whodunnit."  You knew from the get go, who did it and how.  The interest was in watching Columbo not only figure out the murderer, but figure out how to do it in a way that would stand up in court.

My wife and I were watching the series on DVD recently, and she was surprised by what a nice place Los Angeles looked like in those shows.  Obviously, you had your bad parts of town then--Watts, etc--but everything still looked new, and all the signs were in English.

111 You guys watched The Princess Bride?

Yes, multiple times.  I give Rob Reiner a pass on a lot of things because of The Princess Bride and Spinal Tap.

And Falk's character is great in it.

I was back in LA a few yrs ago and when I was visiting the Peterson Automotive Museum they had the Hannibal 8 on display. What a cool car!

Oh, and I love the Princess Bride...

113 You look like number two to me.
I'll explain it to you later. It's disgusting.

117 oh how I love Peter Falk! God Bless him. I put some clips on my blog if anyones looking.

I have a great autographed pic of him in his Columbo gear. I always think of watching Columbo when I was a kid and the great ABC Mysteries.

Yes his Sam Diamond in Murder by Death was awesome and The In Laws is the best-- Serpentine Shel! Serpentine!

And he was wonderful friends with John Cassavettes (Rosemarys Baby), they did some interesting work together.

His kids were suing him I think claiming he had Alzehimers and shouldnt be in charge of his estate.

God Bless and thank you Sir.

118 The cast of the Great Race was outstanding.
Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood, Jack Lemmon, Peter Falk, Vivian Vance, Kennan Wynn, Dorothy Provine, Larry Storch, Ross Martin and carrier pigeons.

Posted by: mpfs at June 24, 2011 10:52 AM (iYbLN)

119 i think i'll pop a copy of "The Great Race" into my iPhone and watch it in memory of him.

Posted by: stormin1961 at June 24, 2011 10:54 AM (Foooh)

120 Between Columbo and Princess Bride, he was in shows that were indelible parts of both my and my kids early childhood.   Can't say that about too many actors.

My kids had large swaths of dialogue from The Princess Bride memorized.

Damn - Now I have to tell the RightWingDaughter that Grampa's dead.

121 Made is really hard to watch but its a great movie. And I loved Falk in everything he did, everything. He was especially great in The Cheap Detective, a little-known gem from the 70s.

123 Cassavetes films not for everybody, but you might like to see Falk in "A Woman Under the Influence."

Posted by: gp at June 24, 2011 11:12 AM (B9rV2)

124 If any of you looked at the Columbo 'Frank Sinatra Roast' link, you'll also see a link there  to 'Columbo interregation'. It's Falk vs Cassavetes. Very good.

Neil Simon liked him in Murder By Death so much that he wrote The Cheap Detective just for him.

I liked him in Murder, Inc.

The Great Race is definitely one of his best, as well as Jack Lemmon's.

One movie I remember him from is Anzio, with Robert Mitchum.  WWII flick I watched a lot as a kid but haven't seen in prolly 30 years so I don't know if it's really good or not.

134 Wow... hard to believe he's gone, and almost as hard to believe he had gotten so old. One of the truly memorable people to ever grace the small screen.

Posted by: CoolCzech at June 24, 2011 01:27 PM (kUaEF)

135 Anzio is not bad if you can get past the theme song. Once it is over it is done and gone but that first five minutes is rough.

Falk played Nico the Psycho Beatnik in "The Bloody Brood" for Corman back in the 50's. Bad movie, great performance.

136 He was a funny guy and an actor I liked to watch.
Looks like I'll go get "The Princess Bride", "The Great Race" and some popcorn.

RIP

He was hysterical in The In-Laws.  "Serpentine!  Serpentine!"  My dad and I laughed til we cried.

His part in The Princess Bride was straight, but he added a lot of charm and warmth to the film.  The film's theme was "wuv...twoo wuv," and it was pretty obvious how much love the character had for his grandson.

138 Been lurking here a long time.  This necessitated a post.  His performance in Vibes was a stitch.  R.I.P.

In one of the first 3 episodes of Columbo, he flashed his badge and ID.  If you enlarge the frame, you can make out his first name.

It's Lt. Frank Columbo.

That's one of those things you've always wondered about.

And now you know!

142 Are you interested in Soccer? Right, you really like playing football. Plus, Soccer is just getting to be a worldwide popular sport nowadays. As fans of Soccer, you should get fully prepared at first. For example, you would better prepare a suitable pair of soccer cleats , a set of soccer jerseys or whatever. Otherwise, you will not enjoy an exciting football match. Anyway, it is necessary and essential to prepare for the football match in a good way.(yang)
