Yep. Strange as it is, I find a community here that does not exist in my personal reality- a community whose opinions I generally agree with.   Keeps me sane to know I am not alone.

I know it was not the best way to handle the situation but I was proud, to say the least, that so many cared .  Behind all these goofy handles are real people with real issues, and real compassion.  Love to all. It's so rare these days.

He texted me earlier today and said that if these bills go through (there's one here in Ohio, too) no teacher or doctor will have reason to work in a public school or hospital because the pay will suck.  I told him that the pay really sucks in private schools/hospitals yet they have a waiting list of eager people praying someone dies so they can get hired. I asked him why that was.

My family does too, and this week, my Mom is trying to convince my grandmother to accept help caring for her husband, which is why I'm all knowledgeable and whatnot about in-home companionship care.  I had a few clients in that business, and they are really good at addressing certain issues like how to overcome the refusal to accept any help providing full-time care for a family member.

I think you're probably right about that. When I think about what I "hate" it comes down to things that are pure evil and I can't stop. Islamists, abortionists, callous theives who prey on the good hardworking people, child abusers, etc. I don't hate people in my life. I'd just erase them from my association or negatively hallucinate them if I had to see them.

In real life I'm more guilty of disdain than any sort of hatred. But I certainly am not one for turning the other cheek.

But there is another avenue that may be even better (cost-wise) once your mom's set with Medicare.  They will pay for certain kinds of medically-related in-home care.  Her doctor issues a prescription for it (in the case with my mother, her Dr's office went a step further and had the agency contact us rather than us having to go to them).  This kind of care (Medicare-paid) won't cover non-medical help like cooking, errands, etc. and given your mother has dementia (mine had cancer) I'm not precisely sure what they would do but surely they could help in some regard.

When Jesus said to turn the other cheek, he was saying not to walk away from the attack, but to tell the oppressor that you weren't humiliated, that he had failed, that he could try all he wanted to cow you and it wouldn't work.

It wasn't an act of submission, but of defiance.

That was Jesus' big movement, which at the time was truly revolutionary. Deny the oppressor the satisfaction of oppressing you, either by submitting or trying to fight an all-powerful foe. Just defy the humiliation, let them know it didn't work.

In that cultural context, it was an unbelievably powerful gesture.

I don't really get into theological discussions much because it's usually a waste of time, but I loves me some trivia.

If she qualifies for Medicaid you can get quite a bit of assistance.   There are Home Delivered Meals or Meals on Wheels,  a Chore person to come in once a week to clean and run errands, etc.  Check with your local Area Agency on Aging as these are all government funded programs.  Even if she is over the limit for Medicaid she may still qualify for some programs.

Willow, I used to buy big bags of #2 pencils, somewhere cheap, and when I would get to that place, I would break them, one by one, as small as I could.  It kept me from doing shit like throwing beer bottles through tv sets and stuff.  Much cheaper, that's for sure.

BTW, Just Dance and Just Dance2 is a great way to lose weight, have a lot of fun, and not feel like you are working out.

My brother is GrumpyCali and I just heard from my niece that he just walked into the Kaiser Hospital in San Francisco. I talked to her and she hopes this will be a major turning point in his life. He has a lot of people who love him and there's no shame in struggling because we all have, or will struggle eventually. I wanted to thank all the beautiful people on this site for the outpouring of love for a stranger. When he gets better, I'm sure he will thank all of you for it. You recognized what was happening early on and may have saved his life from the prayers and love. I've never commented before and I provided my email address in the box provided so that I can be reached there by any of the moderators for confirmation that I am his brother. Thanks for everything, you all did a wonderful job and my family and I appreciate it.
