Poll: Debt Debate Hurts Republicans
— Ace

There's a reason to discount this poll. I'm going to assume, provisionally, that the actual numbers are accurate.

Just 33 percent of Americans approve of the Republican Party, while 59 percent disapprove in a CNN/Opinion Research Corporation survey released Tuesday. ThatÂ’s a net negative 10-percentage-point shift from less than a month ago...

At the same time, DemocratsÂ’ numbers have improved slightly, with approval and disapproval each at 47 percent. In July, 45 percent approved and 49 percent disapproved, an net 4-point positive change.

The tea party movement fares slightly worse than the GOP and has its most dismal ratings since CNN began asking about the movement in polls in January 2010...

Of those surveyed, just 41 percent say they think the House member in their district should be reelected — the lowest ever — while 49 percent said the member does not deserve another term.

First of all, this is a poll of adults, and is then not really predictive of electoral results. Assume Republicans would do better by 4 or 5% among likely voters.

But that's not really why I discount the poll.

I discount it because one party (GOP/Tea Party) is offering plausible but painful policy options to the country.

Oh, we sugar-coat it. We always do. We are not exactly running hard on the Ryan plan, for example.

Nevertheless, most House Republicans voted for that unpopular bill, a fairly gutsy stance that they're not credited enough for.

The other party, on the other hand, offers up pablum and non-solutions that sound good -- "balanced approach," "investments," "modest reforms," etc. -- but are in fact unworkable, and are not really plans at all.

Harry Reid, for example, cannot offer a budget because the budget would be politically embarrassing. The only budget he could offer would demonstrate he intends to explode debt even further. Because he can't agitate for higher taxes (unpopular with independents), and he can't permit significant cuts to anything (the Democratic Welfare Base would not even consider it).

The GOP is therefore offering tough medicine. This tough medicine is not polling well, but it is also not polling catastrophically. The GOP is actually offering its agenda, and that agenda is full of tough, unpopular stuff.

The Democrats, however, are not offering their agenda at all. Obama and Reid and Pelosi continue to strongly imply the fantasy that we can close some corporate jet loopholes and goose taxes on the "wealthiest 1%" and we'll be right as rain.

That is a position with some amount of popular support but, alas, no actual support in the tangible world of real numbers. What is being offered is pure horseshit.

At some point the Democrats will be compelled by circumstance to offer their actual agenda -- and we'll see how that fares when the public understands what they mean by "a balanced approach."

Still, it's dicey for 2012. No one ever went bankrupt betting on the gullibility of the American people, as (I think) P.T. Barnum said.

1 With the way the economy is headed... the Dems are deadmeat come 2012. Blather about cuts that may or may not happen a decade later really won't change that.

2 Silly Ace, only those with plans can be attacked. Rule #1, never have a plan. Rule #2, attack all plans as being heartless. Rule #3, never forget Rule # 1.

5 I think a fair amount of the public is still unaware of how thoroughly boned we actually are; they're only aware the GOP wants to make "drastic cuts". Once they come around to economic reality, I think this will all even out. It takes time to cut through the MSM bullshit.

9 Now you're finally getting to the nut of the thing.

A substantial percentage of the population receives some kind of government "assistance," watches the major TV networks, buys People and probably thinks that Obama guy is doing okay. He sounds so reasonable when he talks about taking it to the Man wealthy and making them cough up their "fair share."

If Limbaugh, for example, has 4 million daily listeners (a number I just pulled out of my posterior; I don't know), that leaves 300 million people not listening.

I'm convinced the majority of Americans don't and can't follow the arguments for and against getting the government under control. They know the Chicago Jesus still has his stash, and live in hope of getting more of it.

In short, morons are way the hell ahead of the curve in all this stuff. That's good, but is also sad.

10 Is the Republican message all that painful? Really? Guaranteeing old people their benefits, and telling everyone else the gravy train will be bone dry by the time you retire is really that painful? Good gosh we have become a soft, despicable people. London may in fact be our future.

11 There's a vid at The Blaze of McLame at a town hall in AZ, and a tea partier asks him about the "hobbit" comment and if he would like to apologize.

The jackweasel arrogantly said he wouldn't back off what he said, and pissed off quite a few people in the room.

The MFM will continue to demonize the tea party right up to 2012.

I say, "Bring it."

Add in the +30% or so Dims in that poll and it sounds about right.

What we have here, is another failure to communicate from teh Pubbies. When will they learn? There was enough low hanging fruit during the debt debate to feed an army of presstitues, yet what did we hear besides crickets?

They didn't even use quotes from The Vapid One®, enough to turn him into even more of a laughingstock than he already is. They could have shoved every one of his campaign statements about his promises right up his ass, but they refused to do it.

Sorry for the rant, but my exasperation level is at an all time high (again). Teh Pubbies should be riding a wave that would sweep over Washington in 2012. I'm to the point where I want the Tea Party to take over the GOP right fuckin' now.

It is when compared to the Democrat message of "We can do all that, and we won't make you or your kids take fewer benefits in SS and Medicare in your old age!"

Remember- the Democrats don't have a plan.  They have not published a plan.  They have not leaked details of a plan.  They have not even leaked that there are details to be leaked from a plan.

Every answer to every question to a Republican should be "Where is the Democrats' budget proposal?"

And, Ace, I'm going to quibble with you here- I doubt the Democrats will ever "be compelled by circumstance to offer their actual agenda," until and unless the Republicans grow a pair and quit worrying about the Media calling them mean names and start requiring that the Democrats produce their plan- written, and posted on the appropriate congressional committee's website.

28 The choice before the voters must be made in stark terms. It would be immoral to offer anything but the most clear and differentiated paths before us.

Either we continue down the socialist democrat path over a cliff or we pull back and shrink the Federal government. Any attempt to find a third path or alternatives will lead the worst of both options.

I like Ryan's plan but the ultimate choice here is whether or not people want to submit to a leviathan state or not.

Posted by: Jane D'oh at August 09, 2011 01:39 PM (UOM48)

37 Ace, you missed the takeaway point of the poll. The reason the GOP is so disliked is because conservatives, libertarians, & tea partiers WITHIN the Republican party hate what the establishment leaders do in congress. they are weak, ineffective leaders w/o a real message or plan for small government. Liberals may hate the Democratic party & Obama at times, but when push comes to shove, most of the liberals still support their side. But there are a ton of ppl who support the GOP or at least side w/ it on fiscal issues, who are completely fed up with the establishment wing of the GOP. People are sick of the status quo, and are about ready to quit the party completely if the GOP doesn't get its act together. The poll doesn't say liberals are winning. They may win by default, but only because the Republican party is 1 more debt ceiling increase away from losing half its membership to some 3rd party. People who hate both parties are about to quit the system. They're not going to stick w/ the GOP if Boehner is renominated as speaker, or if Romney wins the nomination. There was hope for the GOP after 2010, but most of the goodwill is gone. People are disenchanted once more, & that's the main reason you see GOP support dropping so low. It's not a messaging problem. It's a lack of spine by the GOP to force real cuts in govt. And sooner or later, if the party doesn't get its act together, half the GOP voters are going to bolt from the party completely, in favor of someone who actually wants to balance the budget instead of just talk about it.

71 The other party, on the other hand, offers up pablum and non-solutions that sound good -- "balanced approach," "investments," "modest reforms," etc. -- but are in fact unworkable, and are not really plans at all.

I'm not normally one to pimp my own statements, but I think this comment from the previous thread fits nicely with this excerpt.

-----------------------------

I sometimes don't think we think about this enough.

However wrong it is; however (yes, I'll say it) evil it is.  However unworkable it is when viewed through any realistic world-view, Marxism is comforting.

It enables the cognitive dissonance with which most people live daily.  It is what the Christian writers (from Paul in the 1st cent., to people like CS Lewis, and even modern writers) called "the man of flesh and the man of spirit" or "duality" or whatever you want to call it.  No matter it's name, we all know it exists (if we admit it to ourselves): that desire to get "ours," no matter who it hurts- and the knowledge that such selfishness is wrong.

Most people (I believe) try to listen more to the latter voice than the former.  We try to be good people (even though we aren't).

So, along comes Marxism.  A philosophy which says: Yes! You can have everything that's "yours," and you no longer have to worry about being your brother's keeper- because the all beneficent government will keep him for you.  You don't have to worry about your greed- we'll help you keep it in line, and you don't have to sacrifice what is yours for the good of others.  Each man and woman will contribute, as they are able, to the all powerful, all beneficent government, and that government will return to each man and woman, according to their needs.

That's a sweet siren's call, and many sailors have been dashed to death on frothy rocks of reality that surround the island on which those sirens live.

I haven't heard anyone say "Lock everyone up who is rioting. Throw away the key." A nation of pussies.

This is a dumb committee.  Literally.

I would have been less surprised with Schumer on it.  Kerry is lazy and a blowhard, he won't do anything.  Murray is a dimwit and, again, will preen.  Baucus might be set up to be the designated compromiser.  Maybe they don't trust Tester directly not to give away the store.

But this is their "A" team on budget matters? Really? Again, Baucus I'd expect, but the other two are like Larry and Curly.

The 'father of four' who was killed was in a criminal gang which used guns ( a huge Deal in Britain )

I agree with the other commenters here; eventually the yobbo's will get bored and go back home. But the underlying infection of Leftist stupidity will only produce more excuses and hand-wringing guilt.

These things will happen again and keep reoccurring until it becomes taboo or distasteful to appease the multi-culti bullshit artists. And that won't happen for a long time, and not before there is a big schism in Western society.

The link, CNBC, blames it all on economic unrest and I'm sure that is a major part of it. Just reminded me of another bit of cognitive dissonance and denial in the BBC coverage of the riots. Have you seen who is rioting? Have you observed their ilk? One jackass BBC reporter asked a gubmint official about "causes," was it the cuts in programs? Looking at the rioters, it's clear these people have barely brains to fill out a lottery ticket, much less become involved in and aware of the multitude of gubmint programs for The Poor™ in the UK. Refusing to look reality in the face. The UK has raised a generation full of animals posing as humans, and denies doing it.

As someone already pointed out- simply having the gun was criminal.  But that was part of my post- either he was (relatively) innocent- but still in a car where someone was (as I understand it) shooting at police (one policeman was wounded, and a bullet was found lodged into a police radio), or he was actively shooting at police.  In neither case can the police reasonably be blamed for his death.  In the latter case, it was simple self defense, in the former: tragedy of coincidence.

The original story I saw was that he was carrying a gun. Don't know details. If he had a gun and did not put it down, etc. he deserved it. The original story, when not pimping him being a "father of four" also said a bullet was in a police radio, but the media bleated today that that was from another police gun. So, poor-poopie thug did not, supposedly, return fire. I say he probably deserved it, but I am in the Tealibon and considered a Tearrorist.

We have it here in abundance, and it is not confined only to the left and their "Why do they hate us?" There are people of the right who have told me that maintaining the cap on the public debt is irresponsible because laying so much as a speed bump in front of the redistributionist machine would result in our cities' erupting in riots. I confronted one such conservative person (close to me IRL) over that and even invoked his code-of-conduct training WRT fixing responsibility for actions on the actors. His response was that so long as the resulting chaos is avoidable, we should take whatever pains we can to avoid it. The end. This is the blueprint for the other side's victory, and I am awaiting Amnesty International's taking my side against me when they learn of how tight an us/them line I live within.

Well, he is being portrayed as the poor innocent victim. Stories claiming he never shot his gun etc.

yes the police commission released a report saying the "poor innocent victim's" weapon hadn't been fired. Though at this point I am suspicious of anything the government says about the incident.

CNN wouldn't know an accurate sample if it bit them on the ass.  The fact they don't state the party affiliation breakdown in the poll tells me they are hiding it.

239 So which is it... the GOP in Congress wisely adopted Boehner Plan v17.0, in order to avoid MFM blame. But now polls say the GOP is unpopular with CNN's hand-picked adults. Almost as if the advice to pass The Best Deal Available in order to avoid blame was... bad advice. Debt debate hurts GOP? Even after giving in? Anyone think if the GOP had agreed to tax increases, they wouldn't be getting blame for the stingy size of revenue enhancements? Like everything, the GOP gives you cancer. Building a strategy based on appeasing the MFM is not a likely route to success. One must consider their overarching spin, but nevertheless politics is not entirely perception. It's also actual policy, which changes the direction of real events, which changes perceptions. We heard something like the following from conservatives during the debt hysteria. We can't afford to keep spending so much, so cut a few billlion. But we can't cut entire departments, we cannot possible cut hundreds of billions in a single year; even if we had the votes, it would create Economic Turmoil! Thousands of government workers unemployed! A drag on the economy because now they earn no money yet receive unemployment benefits! A cry of "we must cut, but we can't cut!" As if there is a Goldilocks number out there that will be just right to cut, if only the GOP had the power and votes. Bollocks. The massive coercive intrusion of gubmint into the economy distorts and misallocates resources. Any reallocation will cause pain to some, but if you think a free market allocates scarce resources better than a government that puts a gun to your head and takes your stuff, then the gun-mugging must stop. That means the beneficiaries of the muggers (government) will lose, but the rest of us will be more free to manage our lives and property. Is this upheaval? You bet. Is government the size we have now a fully erect chrome-plated ass-raping? Absolutely. But if you want the mugger-love to stop, you can't expect to keep getting little caresses. The trouble is we have so metastasized government into our lives that extricating it will be like a long, painful oncology treatment, peeling out tendrils of cancer. Don't think it can be done slowly to avoid the pain; it still grows while you try to remove it. But pain doesn't sell, hence the notion that our dilemma is not susceptible to political solution in the long run. We may not be able to finish government, but government will finish us, parasite killing the host.

278 Regarding all the reports of riots around the world: I suspect it also has as a component that there is a growing lack of trust in the governing institutions--from the parasites who feed on the body public fearful that the easy life is about to end to the producers who've been bleed dry with no benefit.

Why fight for your property when you know that you've been barely hanging on, paying more and more taxes all the while seeing those taxes go to those who are now looting? And what have you gotten for your troubles? Did the people who  you've paid thousands and thousands over the years help? Did their promises that if they just took a little more from you to give to "them" and then "them" would become more like you work out?

It's a form of going Galt.

Where do you think the why so many on the right are saying "let it burn?" Because it's a sort of honesty to self: "I didn't quit, my shop was burned to the ground, the economic collapse took everything, etc."

They want to quit feeding the alligator, they just need a push.

So, yeah: Let it burn.

280 Uh-oh.  Things are heating up in Israel:

A final cause for the surge in Israeli discontent is a diffuse but widespread sense that the state is falling under the sway of small but powerful interest groups: IsraelÂ’s clique of business tycoons is one such group. The fast-growing ultra-Orthodox community and IsraelÂ’s West Bank settlers are other examples.

The ultra-Orthodox have long drawn the ire of IsraelÂ’s more secular middle class. Not only do they depend on generous state handouts to support their large families, but most also refuse to serve in the Israeli army. The settlers, meanwhile, enjoy cheap, subsidised housing and benefit from public services that are far superior to those available to Israelis living inside the Green Line.

341 Oh and let me add something more: Here in the US we all know that the only way out of our mess is for the bad debt to be cleansed from the system. We tried to paper it over with trillions stolen from the middle class in the form of bailouts. We tried to paper it over by allowing trillions more to be stolen from the middle class through high-frequency trading and other unethical and illegal acts never brought to heal by the SEC.

Who holds all the bad debt? Your neighbor? You? Your church friends?

NO!

It's in the form of banks, Wall Street firms, investment houses, and a big chunk through investments made by retirement funds (the biggest players here being public pensions).

So: What happens if the debt is forced to be flushed from the system? Real life, real time, right now? You can't get credit. That's about it as far as a personal effect. That's all I see. Some of you are going to take a big hit in your retirement.* But, the days of credit are dead. Because the vast majority of the money in this country is not in the physical form.

Think about it: Bank of America goes down, wiped out, billions and billions lost on paper. How is that going to affect you? Your money is insured by your tax dollars--if you're stupid enough to bank there (and if you are banking with BoA, Wells, or Citi--you're a dumbass). Who is going to lose money? The very self-same sons-a-bitches who caused this whole mess! Who've been getting bailed out and stealing from us to try to fend off their day of reckoning!

Here's the thing: The people who ought to suffer, the people who caused this, the people who are still riding high will not--can not--suffer until their firms, their entities are wiped out. It's an ugly truth but the stock market must be destroyed. While some Americans have over the years been able to build wealth through such investing, on balance, it is nothing now but a game rigged by the connected. It's original purpose, allowing companies to raise capital, has been dead and buried for near on several decades. No more does a company need to sell stock on Wall Street to raise capital. That myth is a polite fiction, a facade over the real purpose: It is a gambling house for gambling houses playing with your money--they all win, we all lose.

Now, don't get me wrong here, thinking I'm advocating a bash-the-rich or some such. Poor people don't hire and poor people don't build companies. But, its getting down to crunch-time and there will be winners and losers, who do you want to win? The guys who played by the rules or the guys who cheated and burned us all?

*so, you want to protect your retirement investments in the stock market? And what leads you to believe any of the current paths and proposals are going to do that?

In general I disagree.  No one should carry a caliber below .40, especially if they're not highly trained in close combat.  They'll get of 2 maybe 3 rounds at most, 1 of which will hit and it needs to count.

A 9mm to the lower abdomen isn't going to stop a meth head.  a .45 hollow point will.  First round is the most important round.

Hell no. I'm just saying we have a huge problem that will knock us right back down until we deal with it in our financial institutions. We can solve the problems of government spending, we can solve the problems of public unions. But until we root out the driving force behind the boom-and-bust bubble economies, we will never recover. The massive accumulation of power in the too-big-to-fail is a drag on the economy. Monopoly stifles innovation and freedom and it's time we looked at these firms through the lens of anti-trust law. The financial monopoly currently enjoyed by these firms today is no different than the communication, transportation or energy monopolies of yesterday--the difference is, they have "invested" far more in their regulators and politicians, partnered far more with the government than those monopolies thought possible.

I'm saying we ought be looking at their contribution to this shared sacrifice that keeps being tossed around.

Fine.  Give 'em a big tax on Hollywood.  Give 'em 'carried interest' taxation.

We can live with that.

Tax the rich...Democrats.

The qualification was not required. You've already done more than 98% of your countrymen.

376 @360 In general I disagree.

My recommendation of the Sig was for Jane D'oh, who wanted a good looking gun.

My stopper is an HK 45, which has its own kind of prettiness.

377 Let me be clear:  I'm not infantry, and I was shot at ONE time in my life during ONE deployment.  I do not want to give the impression "I've been in the shit" because I haven't.

Was just offering my 1 time underwear-changing experience.

I appreciate it.  I'm just hyper sensitive to people that... well... you get the idea.  I have too much respect for my brothers to do that.

Whenever a certain poll cites 'Adults' as the core of its respondents...
Does that also include Juveniles who have been or are currently being tried as 'Adults'?

392 Ace, I think you're on the nose about Dems' unwillingness to offer their own budget.  That's actually a brilliant move on their part, because it means that if there is to be any reduction in spending, it'll have to come from Republicans.

That puts the GOP in the position of having to be the mean parent who enforces a grounding on a rebellious kid.  Fully half the electorate will think, "Why should I vote for those pricks who want to cut my 'freebies' when I can vote for the Democrat, who's promised to keep 'em coming and then some?"

You concluded, "The GOP is therefore offering tough medicine. This tough medicine is not polling well, but also not catastrophically. The GOP is actually offering its agenda, and that agenda is full of tough, unpopular stuff."

Bingo.  But then you conclude, "At some point the Democrats will be compelled by circumstance to offer their actual agenda -- and we'll see how that fares when the public understands what they mean by a 'balanced approach.'"

Gotta disagree there.  The 50 percent of the public who don't pay federal income taxes will be delighted by a Democrat promise to increase spending and raise taxes--and whether on "the rich" or on everyone making over $30K a year doesn't matter to them one bit.

Add the five percent of rich, tax-paying but guilty liberals and there's a Dem majority.

Finally, you note that Obama, Reid and Pelosi have implied that closing tax loopholes on corporate jets and taxing the wealthiest one percent will solve all problems, and that this is pure horseshit.  Of course, but to reach that conclusion one must be numerate, literate and well informed.

Fully 52% of the electorate fails one or more of those tests.
