— Ace More Jews disapprove of Obama than approve, which of course means that most Jews now hate black people. (The only possible explanation for thinking a SCOAMF is doing a poor job.)
For the first time since he took the oath of office, President Barack ObamaÂ’s job-performance disapproval number among Jewish voters is higher than his approval, the American Jewish CommitteeÂ’s (AJCÂ’s) Annual Survey of American Jewish Opinion showed Monday.According to the poll, Jewish approval of the presidentÂ’s performance declined to 45 percent, with 48 percent disapproving and 7 percent undecided. Last year, 51 percent approved of ObamaÂ’s job performance and 44 percent disapproved.
So, Jews are starting to wake up and smell the SCOAMF. That must mean it's time for the New York Times to scare them with visions of visions of the Apocalypse.
Why the Antichrist Matters in PoliticsBy MATTHEW AVERY SUTTON
Published: September 25, 2011
Pullman, Wash.THE end is near — or so it seems to a segment of Christians aligned with the religious right. The global economic meltdown, numerous natural disasters and the threat of radical Islam have fueled a conviction among some evangelicals that these are the last days. While such beliefs might be dismissed as the rantings of a small but vocal minority, apocalyptic fears helped drive the antigovernment movements of the 1930s and ’40s and could help define the 2012 presidential campaign as well.
Christian apocalypticism has a long and varied history. Its most prevalent modern incarnation took shape a century ago, among the vast network of preachers, evangelists, Bible-college professors and publishers who established the fundamentalist movement. Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Pentecostals and independents, they shared a commitment to returning the Christian faith to its “fundamentals.”
Biblical criticism, the return of Jews to the Holy Land, evolutionary science and World War I convinced them that the second coming of Jesus was imminent. Basing their predictions on biblical prophecy, they identified signs, drawn especially from the books of Daniel, Ezekiel and Revelation, that would foreshadow the arrival of the last days: the growth of strong central governments and the consolidation of independent nations into one superstate led by a seemingly benevolent leader promising world peace.
This leader would ultimately prove to be the Antichrist, who, after the so-called rapture of true saints to heaven, would lead humanity through a great tribulation culminating in the second coming and Armageddon.
One of my best friends is Jewish, and a committed Zionist. He's also a fairly strong Democrat.
Occasionally we'll see a bit of news together, and Obama and the Democrats will be doing something to undercut, isolate, or pressure Israel, and I'll arch an eyebrow in his direction.
I don't have to say anything; he knows what the eyebrow means.
"The Republicans just want the Jews in Israel to hurry the Apocalypse," he tells me.
The reason he believes this is that he has to believe this. The party he supports is not a very good friend to Israel, and the party he opposes is. To square this circle -- and justify to himself his continued support of the Democratic Party and Israel -- he's almost forced to buy into this claim that Republicans are even worse on Israel, and only support that country due to a Christian Theocratic Apocalypse Agenda.
So the uncomfortable fact that the Democratic Party is unfriendly to Israel is dismissed. The Republicans may "support" Israel, but they do so for the wrong reasons, and have a hostility towards the Jews in their hearts.
Which is why this will not be the first NYT article about this. The media is going to push this idea, because they need to get the Jews in line. They can't claim that Obama is a good president, or a friend to Israel; they can only throw mud at the Republican Party.
Which they will. Sure, Republicans are better for Jews on a variety of issues, including Israel, but seriously, Republican just want Jews in Israel so they can be killed in large numbers and usher in the second coming of Christ, who will of course convert the Jews who remain alive.
Meanwhile, the Democrats just want Israel to be weaker and less secure.
Isn't that better, when you think about it?

The sure sign of bad thinking is when it doesn't make a lick of sense, even if you accept all the premises.

And then there are those folks who claim to have some special knowledge ...
For example, Democrats might be surprised by Democratic legislators who publicly voice support for jobs, students, safety nets, environmental protection and parks but vote against those priorities in order to boost the fortunes of narrow special interests. And Republicans might be surprised by Republican legislators who voice support for jobs but reject job-boosting bills that might harm a corporation or two or increase state revenues. And all constituents might be surprised to learn about legislators who don't understand the budgets they pass, countenance deceptive accounting, fight to keep information from citizens, and choose not to address the state's most pressing problems in order to focus on special interests.
... or ...
This goes well beyond the jobs crisis or the budget. Take education. Democrats canÂ’t say we need to fire bad teachers who are blighting the lives of countless kids, because teachers unions are the partyÂ’s most powerful interest group. But Republicans canÂ’t say we need to raise salaries for new teachers substantially if weÂ’re going to lure a new generation of talent to the classroom, because thatÂ’s admitting that money is part of the answer. Trouble is, weÂ’ll never solve what ails education without getting bad teachers out and paying up for new talent to come in. That means Democrats and Republicans canÂ’t solve the problem.
... but it you dig down, the truth always seems to be more "enlightened" spending and taxing.
The painful truth that Obama is still denying, as are most of these folks, is that there is a limit on taxation and we've come pretty much to the end of the line. That means there must be a limit on spending.
Obama was the "Magic Negro" but unfortunately he doesn't have the power to turn debt into gold. There is no Magic. There is only ourselves.

Learn more about the Holocaust before you glibly minimize the methods the Nazis used to move the Jews into the concentration camps.
1. Power was the main factor in moving the Jews.
2. Support from the non-Jewish population around them was also key (see Denmark).
3. Many -- perhaps most -- were aware of where they were going. But European Jewry was, by and large, a peaceful group. There was no martial tradition onto which they could fall back to fight for themselves.

It's a widespread liberal, Democratic talking point that Republicans only support Israel because of Christian millennial beliefs, but, even if the target of the Democrats is to scare Jews with the evangelist bogeyman, the beliefs have spread much further, to the point where some anti-Zionists outside the United States glibly attribute US support for Israel as a scheme to hasten the Christian apocalypse.

I mean, isn't it appropriate for an American to place less importance on what's happening in another country than on what is happening here?
I realize with the history involved of the Holocaust that Israel's survival is often equated with the survival of the Jewish people, but in a secular sense from a US perspective, it really is just another country. A good, important ally, to be sure, but I guess I could see how a Jewish person could still wind up being a Democrat.

Time out: If you were a Christian evangelical and wanted the Apocalypse to arrive - and Jesus to return - wouldn't you oppose the state of Israel and not support it?
Seems to me that if you wanted to hasten the arrival of the end times, you wouldn't want to defend Israel. You'd oppose it to make those end times come quicker.
I know, I know, this whole argument is silly. I'm sure some - maybe many - Evangelicals support Israel out of biblical reasons. But the vast majority of conservatives are not Evangelicals and they support Israel for secular, non-religious reasons.

Posted by: CoolCzech at September 26, 2011 07:05 PM (niZvt)
The number of Orthodox Jews is increasing as well as the number of Hassidic Jews. Reform and unaffiliated Jews have high rates of intermarriage and conversion and have few kids. Conservative Jews are the same, albeit to a lesser extent, and Conservative Jews have been leaving for Orthodox or Reform congregations in great numbers over the last few decades. Orthodox and Hassidic Jews have more children and low rates of intermarriage or conversion. Although these demographic changes mean the American Jewish population is gradually becoming dominated by Orthodox and Hassidic congregations, this can't account for sudden swings in Jewish voting; Obama can take credit for that.

To a lot of American Jews -- again, at least the ones I was around in Los Angeles -- Israel is more a concept than an actual state.
They go on excursions to the Holy Land, donate to various charities, mourn the deaths of Israelis killed by Muzzies, then rush right off to the Museum of Tolerance to "dialogue" with Arabs in hopes that all the strife will end if we just understand and help the downtrodden.
They live in a friggin' dream world.

Perhaps it is discussed more often in the places where things move a bit slower, but the Rapture is pretty danged significant part of the Christian faith. For those above to suggest that Christians don't believe in it is absurd.
Posted by: As If! at September 26, 2011 03:30 PM (piMMO)
Let's see: Evangelicals are incapable of holding more than one idea in their head at the same time.
They support Israel for biblical reasons. Period. They are incapable of supporting the country for religious and non-religious or secular reasons. E.g., it's a democracy, it allows religious freedom, it supports the US.
Nah, they simply cannot hold more than one idea in their heads at one time.

Yeah. Some Christians think Revelations refers to the future, and some think it (somewhat cryptically) describes events which have already happened. Some think it's literal, some think it's symbolic, some think it's a coded political statement about the Roman empire, etc.

Before this deal between Reid and McConnell, Reid wanted anywhere from $7-10B in disaster funding and he always talked about budgeting for it later (or never). Anyway, the House has not yet collectively signed-off on the deal, so we'll see. Even if the House leadership agrees to it, they still have to get a majority of members.
As for the approximate budget, we know the total for discretionary but not yet for mandatory. I can see the latter easily rising by 3-5%.

240.....I would say eschatology (study of end times/last things) generally is a more frequent topic in the Bible Belt.
Not from what I've seen, Miss80'sBaby. ....There might be some small amount of it going on in isolated pockets here and there, but no more than any other area of the country.
Most people around here in my neck of the Bible Belt are too busy having babies, raising them and trying to survive. ....Not something you'd be doing if you were cheering on the end times of the apocalypse.

16 For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 17 After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever. 18 Therefore encourage one another with these words.

No. The entire topic is one which is discussed quite often, whether it be in Sunday School or church. Which denominations have a greater tendency to focus on it depends on their interpretation of the end times.

First of all, any Jew with half a clue would have known from Obama's association with former PLO spokeman Khalid Rashidi (not to mention Jeremiah Wright) that Obama was probably anti-Israel.
I spoke to quite a few who stuck their heads into the sand about this. "Oh", he doesn't really agree with them", they said to themselves. Empirically, no. . .he seems to agree.
Next, lots of Jews are themselves so leftist, they're in practice, anti-Israel. Its sickening, but true. To them, the religion is leftism, not Judaism, and Obama just supports the same leftist ideology that you can find within Israel's extreme left (ie we're oppressors and occupiers, if only we tried to play nice with the Palestinians, they'd leave us alone, etc)
After the most recent Intifada, that strain of Israeli politics was heavily marginalized, but 7000 miles away in the USA it lives on in liberal fantasy land.

Nope, because the sorting process puts everyone either into heaven or hell.
Nobody is "left behind"The Matthew 24 cite does tend to suggest that. I think the actual question is the timespan involved, mainly whether or not the departure of the faithful is significantly earlier than the final judgement. I don't think it actually matters to any of the faithful, as we'll be out of the timestream for whatever the duration of the old Creation turns out to be (Paul talks at one point about 'away from the body at home with the Lord', but does that mean our spirits are in God's presence waiting for the judgment or are we fast forwarded to it?-that sort of thing).

"The Republicans just want the Jews in Israel to hurry the Apocalypse," he tells me.
Jewish people place a high value on identity. It's a big part of what holds them together as a community. So much of what they do is done simply because it's what Jewish people do, or at least what certain Jewish people do. Maybe this seeps into the non-religious aspects of your friend's life, and maybe he gives you this Apocalypse nonsense because he finds it harder to say "I'm a Jew, and Jews support Democrats."
I don't know. I don't know your friend, so I I have no idea what's going on inside his head. I'm not Jewish either, but I watch Jewish Life TV on cable simply because I get the channel. I'm just going on what Rabbi Golub said once on "Jew 101" though he didn't get into politics at all.

Who is doing the snatching? If it is the Angels of the Lord at the second coming, it is irrelevant to the Rapture. Since your first quote referred to the second coming and not a rapture event, no reason this one is likely to be different.
But regardless, the Catholics teach nothing about Rapture, and have abandoned preparing for the end of the world since 1000 AD. When it comes, it comes. I assume most other mainline Protestant sects follow this lead. And most evangelical sects don't follow the popular Hal Lindsey books either with a "Nyah Nyah" rapture. They just think the actual Second Coming is happening.

"That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left.
42 “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him."

Wrong! Coming of the Son of Man = Rapture, followed by the second coming at the end of the Tribulation.
During the rapture the elect meet Christ in the air. Not on the earth. When Christ returns to earth (terra firma) he will descend to Mt Olive and begin the millennial Kingdom on earth. So, the first time he comes back to take the elect, the second time to establish His kingdom on earth. Easy. If you read your bible.
