I still think there is a better explanation.  Liberals do love and still romanticize blue-collar workers - otherwise why the UAW bailouts at General Motors?  But they despise fossil fuels even more.  It is dogma with them - Mother Earth is ruined when fossil fuels are extracted and again when they are burned, either to produce electricity or as gasoline in cars.  They believe use of fossil fuels is a crime against Earth.  Their fantasy Utopia is a world where there are lots of blue-collar, union-dues-paying workers, but they are making electric cars or solar panels or wind turbines, and most of us are either driving electric cars or riding in electric trains.  And all of that electricity will be produced by wind and solar power.

These assholes thought they had it made when Obama was elected and they had 60 votes in the Senate.  They were going to pass Cap and Trade to cap all carbon emissions while making their liberal friends like Al Gore rich in the trading of carbon credits.  This would then increase prices for fossil-fuel-produced electricity so much that private utilities would be forced to invest their own dollars in wind and solar and biofuels, and would increase gasoline prices so much that people would demand electric cars.

They did not count on Cap and Trade being defeated, nor did they count on the massive development of the Marcellus shale which has caused natural gas prices to plummet.  This is why they have clamored to stop the fracking and oppose the keystone pipeline.  They do not care about those jobs being lost; to liberals they are bad jobs because they help sustain a viable market for fossil fuels.

I often just post a link and a quote -- just grist for commenters to offer up something to say, I having failed to come up with anything -- but a lot of times I just view it as "It's in the sidebar, people have read it, they are informed." A couple of points.

1) Much of this line of liberal thinking also can slide very, very easily into anti-Semitism. Historically in Europe, when Jews owned various means of production and were responsible for stuff getting made and put up for sale (i.e., engaging in commerce), they were reviled for their base pragmatism, for what surely must be their innate lack of ability to live for loftier purposes. 

See Jerry Muller's incredible book "The Mind and the Market" (a history of modern Europe's thinking about capitalist development) for detailed exposition.

2) Disturbingly enough, a flip-side version of this thinking, prevalent on both the arch-conservative (in the old European sense) and leftist sides of the political divide *also* targeted the Jews (in Europe) for excoriation.  The flip-side being the view that financial-market speculation (a form of paper-passing, if you will) had absolutely no place in a virtuous society whose economy was defined strictly as the physical production of tangible goods.  Those excoriating the Jews (both "paleo"-rightists and leftists) had no concept of the pricing mechanism in economics nor of how speculation actually serves as a handmaiden of price-signalling.  Instead, conveniently (so to speak), the speculators frequently were the already-long-maligned Jews, so economic parasitism could be added to the rap-sheet.  Marx took this charge to a whole new level of viciousness, and you know the rest -- most recently thanks to Marx's heirs in Zuccotti and their, ahem, conversations with hard-working religious Jews.

5. Failure to pass a budget. The abject failure by the Chief Executive to get any kind of budget adopted for 2010.

169 My parents grew up in the 1930s and they were damn poor.  Some of the houses they lived in had electricity but most did not.  Some had wooden floors and some had dirt floors.  None had running water except for maybe a pump in the kitchen, which had a wood or coal or coal oil stove to cook on and supply all the heat to the house, even on days when it was 100 degrees outside.  Air conditioning was only in movie theaters, sometimes.  They had to use an outhouse, situated well away from the house, as a toilet during the day and chamber pots at night, which they then emptied and washed every morning with water they had carried to the house and heated on the stove.  Let these people who want to live a green life live like my parents did when they were growing up.  I don't think they will like it very much.  I don't think they are capable of getting through a week without their Ipads.

The make-believe that is evidenced by our elite betters concerning those of us on the "lower" end of the job spectrum is now so entrenched in popular culture as to be qualified as insanity. Yeah, I spent my adulthood getting filthy at work, breathing grinding dust as a toolmaker and getting grease underneath my fingernails that no soap could remove (molybdenum disulphide grease is the best stuff going for die set pins, not that many of y'all would know what those are unless you've been in manufacturing, and that's not a dig against you if you don't), but our betters take great pride in their ignorance of such things.

I loved every greasy, grimy, sweaty minute of it. I busted my ass on my own time to learn everything I could about my craft, so I could be more valuable to my employer, and ultimately, to myself and my family.

The parts I've made have enabled many heart disease victims to lead better lives after their arteries were cleared with that little doohickey I worked on that their surgeons used on them. I made extra sure that the defense parts I made were to the proper specification, because I knew that a soldier in the field's life depended on it. The Shuttle flight hardware I worked on was a difficult job, but watching it fly was but one of the many rewarding moments. The people I came into contact with while I was doing this work were some of the finest, most intelligent and dedicated folk you'd ever want to meet.

They still are.
