— Dave in Texas Jake Tapper confuses me with this bit. Seemingly opens with a rise above partisan hackery, but then descends firmly into it.
That’s because the issues brought to the forefront of the political debate — the importance of national unity, the wisdom of going to war in Iraq, the balance between liberty and security — are ones that the then-University of Chicago constitutional law lecturer found so compelling, he felt a renewed need to influence that debate. In short, 9/11 in many ways compelled Barack Obama to become a national leader.
On the word of "sources close to the President", the 9/11 attacks hastened Obama's "sense of urgency" to emerge upon the national stage.
This explanation of Obama's opposition to the Iraq war (for which there are reasons enough to argue, without casting him as some kind of jaw-set 9/11 hero), declaring (without evidence) that his burning desire to lead the nation was somehow born of his determination to "renew the debate" as a national leader.. is just silly in the extreme.
Rechurned nonsense, "the more difficult task of understanding the sources of such madness. The essence of this tragedy, (it seemed to Obama), derives from a fundamental absence of empathy on the part of the attackers: an inability to imagine, or connect with, the humanity and suffering of others.."
Are you kidding me? Please recall the suffering of and our inability to connect with the 9/11 murderers.
Mohamed Atta, a student of architecture from a middle-class family in Egypt, pilot of the first plane to hit the towers.
Marwan al-Shehhi, UAE, who was also fortunate enough to move to Hamburg and study.
Saudi Hani Hanjour, who was so downtrodden he was able to come to the US to learn how to fly, badly, and went home and couldn't get a job as a pilot.
And Lebanese Ziad Jarrah, the son of a wealthy family.
I could go on. I know the "inability to imagine and connect with suffering" crap were Obama's words, not Tapper's. Still, dude, you could show a little professional skepticism before repeating nonsense in your "Obama was Inspired by 9/11" stuff. Can I definitively prove he wasn't?
No I can't.
Do I believe for a moment he was?

9/11 was cowardly sneak attack on innocent civilians, using our freedoms against us.
Obama's rise to power was a sneak attack on our country, using our freedoms against us.
There are similarities.

You read it wrong. "empathy on the part of the attackers" means the terrorists can empathize with their victims.
There are over 500 words for 'murder' in Arabic, but none for 'empathy'.
True Fact.

It just seems odd to me, because one would think that a narcissist who finds a way to make himself the central figure of every single event would be babbling endlessly on this day about where he was and what he was doing.
Hell, even the Clintons didn't disappoint on this score, with their bullshit story about Chelsea jogging in Manhattan near Ground Zero.
Anyone have any idea?

Exactly. The outrage isn't in the talk about lack of empathy - it's talking about the terrorists lacking empathy. The outrage is a little later, where Obama claims that it comes from: "Most often, though, it grows out of a climate of poverty and ignorance, helplessness and despair.”
So - according to Obama - it's not because they're religious fanatics, it's because they're poor.

Let's face it Obama is not the kind of leader who inspires. He does not project honesty, courage, or honor. He does project rage, envy, a sense of inferiority, dishonesty and entitlement.
In short he is a good representative of the give me class of America.

The Left wanted the polar opposite of GWB and they found it in Barack Obama.
Bush shames him every time he opens his mouth and speaks.
Obama shames us every time he opens his mouth and speaks.

But the real outrage of the article is that it represents an attempt by the left to make 9/11 all about THEM, and their empty-suit hero, Obama - to add to their phoney mythology about him - when it really has more to do with Bush & Co.
iIt doesn't strike me as neutral at all, not really even at the beginning. They even use Obama's little girl to pull at heartstrings, for cryin' out loud.

I've seen this TV show before in the '30-'52 in the Soviet Union it was called "everyone Loves Dear Leader-or else"...
Their wild gauche overreach is yet another chance for the people of America to judge the seriousness of the Obamas and their enablers....
at some point it stops being about the idiots on the stage and starts becoming about the audience I think this little farce is about that point....
if the electorate claps and embraces this bait and switch and does not wonder why the suddenly hot for "unity" types now weren't so hot then they will never punish the liberals for their antics IMHO, and frankly part of me will die.....
of course the left's last game like this was Vietnam and their antics cost them dearly I still believe the American people know shitty performance when they see it.

Obama had no part of 9/11: the attack, the grief, the anger nor the leadership. He is only at these ceremonies as he is in office. No one cares about him today. He is an after thought for many. "He" did not kill Bin Laden, our SEALS did, carrying out orders from President Bush ten years prior. For him to have to appear next to President Bush has to irritate his little cockles. Please note that I have never put Barky's title and name together in a comment and never will. He is not my president, he is a place-holder for President Perry or whoever the GOP nominates.
For any of you reading today, who signed up to serve and protect the USA after 9/11 (or prior service): thank you from my family's heart. Our military is the greatest force on this earth and bow to no one. (please go listen on youtube to Toby' Keith's "Red, White and Blue" to boost spirits today) May God bless and protect you all.
For any of you reading today, who lost loved ones on 9/11 we will never forget: may God comfort you and give you peace. Know a country grieved for them and still do. You are in my prayers.
For those who have connections to Flight 93: know our country changed from those heroes and a commercial airliner will never, ever be used as a weapon again. Our eternal thanks to those heroes who we will never forget.
The only person I want to hear today is President Bush. I have read his transcript from the Flight 93 Memorial and will listen to his speech later today, as well as watching the National Geographic channel at 9pm tonight. I will not watch our current president. He has no place there.
I will write a check for Soldier's Angel's this week for our troops. I will, and have, continue to pray today for those who are grieving, for our military (77 were wounded today by a barbarian's suicide bomb), and for our country's protection from radical Islamic terrorists: three words Obama and his administration refuse to say.
And may God bless Ace, his co-bloggers, and all Morons and "ettes.

How about this phrase?:
*On issues ranging from the War Powers Act to the indefinite detention of accused terrorists, the former constitutional law lecturer has certainly show a certain willingness to get beyond the theoretical and make decisions his advisers call “practical.” In this the responsibility of the presidency is what may have changed him, not 9/11.*
Huh? So in this 9/11 article, they throw this incoherent whatever-that-is - that has nothing to do with anything - and then say it has nothing to do with it. Sounds like maybe their fellow liberals are faulting Obama for something, and are trying refine their rationalizations for how it's somehow OK anyway. This whole quote is so weird in so many ways, it's not funny.
But if you really want to get outraged, skip to near the end, and this little gem:
*Extremists thrive, he said, “in conflict zones that are incubators of resentment and anarchy” where they “encourage the exploitation of these hopeless places on their hate-filled websites.” He said then, as he did with different language in his Cairo speech to the Muslim world in 2009, that “America is a compassionate nation that wants a better future for all people.”*
So, on the anniversary of 9/11, this asshole has the nerve to blame the US for these fascist religious fanatics attacking us. But, then, he's quoting Obama, so I guess there are two assholes involved.

48 "Humm, I thought the reason they did it is because they knew precisely what sort of pain and death they were going to cause. Obviously, they had reasons for doing so, & that is what made them evil."
Good point. I guess the whole empathy thing is a sort of denial about the real evil afoot here. So Obama's got that "going for him" as well.

Never forget that 9/11 was a gift from the Clinton Presidency.
Born of ignorance rather than avarice, imho. More than anyhting else, it gave us Bin Laden/Al Qaeda and chose to treat them like 'Bad Guys' in a made for TV drama.
It was the Clinton administration's insistence on a police approach to international terrorism that netted us this solemn anniversary. Always waiting for the 'smoking gun' or 'red hand' before acting against terrorists.

51......Obama recalls the measures he took that night to assuage his pain. "Michelle and I made love," he said. "In some sense, we were concerned that we were dishonoring the memories of those who perished, but we ultimately concluded that the act was a reaffirmation of life, and of the future. Obama added, however, that Michelle later terminated the resulting pregnancy out of respect for the resources of the planet and the burgeoning population crisis.

He almost angrily asked, "Do we need another 9/11 to bring us back together? To get over our petty differences? Do you remember how we gathered together ten years ago, prayed, held hands, and one another?" I was in tears.
After church my husband and I were alone with him for a while. We talked about that day, and what's going on in this country now. Our pastor keeps his politics to himself, but said to us, "God gave us the leader the country needed at that time. Imagine if it had been Gore."
And I replied, "God help us if we suffer another 9/11. I'm afraid we don't have the right man in the White House." He just nodded.
Prayers for the families of those who lost their lives that day, and for all of us.

Florida Set for Big Role in GOP Presidential Race
I have some news for you Fox, FL has ALWAYS had a big role, this year is no different. And yes, the top three candidates WILL divide Iowa, NH, and SC because the RNC rules have set that very thing. If only they had done the same thing for the rest of the primaries it would be a lot better. As it is, they only made bad winner take all rules worse.
But, as I see it, a big surge by Perry could rap it up totally by FL. If he knocks of favorite daughter Bachmann in Iowa, gives a strong second in NH against favorite son Romney, and then takes SC he would be in the cat bird seat going in to FL. A win there would at the very least knock out all the “noise” candidates.

And now this month's fantasy hypothetical question. Twenty-five percent of Americans think the world would be a better place if Al Gore had won the 2000 presidential election and 16 percent think it would be a worse place. Predictably, the former group had more Democrats and the latter more Republicans (surprise!). The majority of Americans (56 percent) led by Independents did not think that the world would be very different at all. Based on the current activities (or lack thereof) occurring in our nation's capitol the majority has it.

What happened after 9/11 — and I think even people on the right know this, whether they admit it or not — was deeply shameful. Te [sic] atrocity should have been a unifying event, but instead it became a wedge issue. Fake heroes like Bernie Kerik, Rudy Giuliani, and, yes, George W. Bush raced to cash in on the horror. And then the attack was used to justify an unrelated war the neocons wanted to fight, for all the wrong reasons.
It gets worse. However, one part did make me chuckle:

Obama doesn't do debate. He has avoided debate his entire adult life. He does not present his ideas and slug it out intellectually with his rivals. He hides his position and attempts to force it through by backroom dealings and manipulation. That's why he taught Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, which is all about manipulation and rejects intellectual persuasion.
A fellow radical said that when he met Obama at Columbia U, he was spouting the straight Marxist-Leninist party line. Years later, one of Obama's colleagues at law school remarked that you could talk to him for an hour and never know his position at the end. Somewhere between college and his stint at law school, Obama realized that he could not defend his radical ideas, even to his fellow radicals, and that it was best to keep quiet about his beliefs. It was better and more effective for him to gain power and act behind the scenes.
That lack of intellectual testing is apparent in Obama's penchant for lecturing and monologue, for his reliance on the teleprompter to feed him his lines. He's never subjected himself to the rigorous intellectual back and forth which allows him to think on his feet.
