— andy Dave in Texas had a great post yesterday on oil company tax breaks. His big-picture point was that any time you hear "subsidies for big oil", the person emitting this bilge is a demagogue playing populist to make you think he's "doing something" about high gas prices.
Now there are some industry-specific things like depletion allowances that only apply to companies engaged in mining or oil and gas extraction, but the tax code is full of things that only apply to individual industries (e.g., Big Oil probably doesn't make much use of the depreciation schedules for the motion picture industry). By and large, oil companies mainly take the same deductions and credits as most businesses, provisions that were enacted by congress over many years of tinkering with the code, yet somehow all these get turned into nefarious "subsidies" when there's political hay to be made.
Dave also suggested that if your congresscritter utters this phrase you should ask him to name just one subsidy. I agree. And if he's feeling sporty after that, you should follow up by asking him how raising taxes on oil companies (which is what they really mean) lowers prices at the pump. Their thinking apparently follows this model:
1. Raise taxes on "Big Oil"
2. ???
3. Profit!
Notice that if you substitute "millionaires and billionaires" for "Big Oil", this starts to sound an awful lot like Obama's plan to have a plan to deal with the deficit.
My take on this is very simple. The left loves any excuse it can find to raise taxes. Period. If it can do it on the back of teh eeevilll fat-cat millionaires and billionaires or Gaia-raping oil companies, so much the better. If the Obama administration really wanted to lower gas prices, they'd address their ongoing permitorium in the Gulf of Mexico and rein in their stupid EPA that's preventing Shell from drilling because of handwringing about the "greenhouse gas" emissions from a friggin' icebreaker.
Larry Kudlow had a good piece on this earlier this week (suffer through the ad, it's worth it). Pay attention to a couple of things when the Natural Resources Defense Council spokestool is talking. First, he sounds amazingly like Obama - is it possible that our President is just doing the bidding of the Greens and isn't really interested in sound energy policy? Nahhhh ... couldn't be - that's just crazy talk, I know. Also, notice how the NRDC guy flat-out lies about that Shell icebreaker. Again, he reminds me of Obama.
Remember what Obama told Charlie Gibson. He's all for raising taxes to be "fair", even if they don't raise revenue. Couple that with his watermelon views on energy (green on the outside, red on the inside) and you'd expect he'd be o.k. with prices necessarily skyrocketing.
Oh, and if you didn't get a chance to read Dave's post yet, make sure you do. If there's one thing Dave knows about, it's gas.

Who exactly are these people? Who are the Greens? I know they are really just communists but WHO are they? And where do they get their money? From us, right?

Dagny dear, it is the intellectual interlock between Academia, the political front organizations such as Greenpeace, Earth First!, etc. and the placement of key people in the government and the Media that results in such things as the EPA tying Shell Oil in knots over the emissions from a tugboat exceeding the permit level for the drilling in the sea off the coast of Alaska.
Subsidies for wind turbine farms that lose money, forced obsolescence of incandescent bulbs for problematical Compact Flourescents with Mercury, low phosphate/no phosphate detergents that don't work too well. And the list goes on.
The next target is natural gas well drilling in the Marcellus Shale and "frakking" water. They (the Greens, for want of a better word), want to stop this DEAD.
It's a war, and you, me, and a lot of other people are the targets. We will be forced by the rule of law to conform to the new reality. We'll all be poorer in the future and we will learn to like it.

Wow! This is epic! Your feel good story for the day! Some sources were predicting crowds of 50,000 for the May Day Rally in L.A. today. Sadly, something happened along the way (From HA):
An estimated 50,000 people are expected to march through downtown Los Angeles for immigration reform on Sunday, marking May Day.The march and rally aim for full legalization. Two marches are scheduled with one starting at noon and the other at 12:30 p.m.
The message participants want to relay is for the government to create a path to citizenship for the millions of undocumented people already in the U.S.
Reality check:
There were American flags, union banners and vendors hawking treats such as ice cream and hot dogs wrapped in bacon.
But what was missing from this year's May Day march on a crystal-clear Sunday morning were the crowds.
By 10 a.m. only a few hundred immigrant rights and labor activists had gathered at Broadway and Olympic Boulevard in downtown Los Angeles to rally public support for legislation that would legalize the nation's 11 million illegal immigrants.
"It's really sad," Luis Ortiz, an ice cream vendor who has been coming to the rallies for the last 15 years, said of the small turnout. "I've sold very little, almost nothing."
So could we infer from Mr. Ortiz that it was the smallest crowd in history? Thank you Obama!

But your POV is not their POV. The people "behind" this want certain things, not the same as you want. Hell, they'll say it if you listen long enough. And no, it doesn't make any sense, but they're willing to struggle and strive and die (or more likely make you die) to achieve it.
They never will achieve it, because it doesn't make any sense. But they'll wreck everything in their path in the process of failing as usual.
That's why they went after academia and the press first, and tried to push everyone else out (with great success), because if they could take over the language and stop people talking about how the always fail, maybe they can get away with it.
I know the reasons why we haven't "fixed" those problems, they're myriad. But we had damned well better or we're all going to lose.
That's the sad irony of the situation - we're trying to save both of us. They (sometimes) think the same thing, but they've been wrong every time so far.

Yes and no. The initial patent term on a new drug substance is 20 years but well over half of that time is typically consumed by the lengthy clinical trials and FDA approval process that must occur before the drug can be sold. A drug company can file for a patent extension but the extension is only for half of the time lost waiting for regulatory approval, and gives a maximum of 14 years exclusivity (and typically less than that) from the time the drug is finally approved.

*We* the customers pay all those taxes. Every penny.
Increase their taxes, increase our prices. It's a huge middle-class tax increase.
And at least half the people have *no* idea that this is the case. The think that corporate executives pay it out of pocket, if they think about it at all.
I argued the point with one liberal who finally had to admit that they would raise taxes on everyone *but* the oil companies, especially the poor who pay a higher share of their incomes for food and transportation, rather than allow a *perception* that corporations were getting away tax-free.
They were *proud* of the position, they claimed, after having been forced into it. They didn't really want to discuss the part where they were punishing the poor so they could *feel* better.
It's not just a stereotype, liberals' feelings are more important to them than the suffering of the poor.
Their very existence is a lie. And because there are so damned many of them, we can't just ignore their craziness.
Seriously, how did we get here? No wonder we're always blowing each other up, we humans. You'll hardly find anyone who won't claim half of us are crazy. Looks like it's true, too.

why aren't our guys doing some non-stop bleating of their own about drilling for oil. It should be at the top of every press release sent out by every Republican on any issue.
Sigh. party of stupid indeed.

I firmly believe that will hold true now. The turmoil we are now experiencing can be seen as an example of the path NOT to be followed. We WILL conquer this, because we are Americans. It's in our genes.
So y'all can laugh, deride or applaud, doesn't matter. All I know is that this storm cannot last. And I'll be playing my small part to make things better until I physically can do no more.

How To Become A Liberal
Step 1: Search your feelings for what you think would be "the most fair".
Step 2: Find other liberals who also share the same belief.
Step 3: Find liberal professors who cite half-baked theories and misleading statistics to support your feelings
Step 4: Argue with conservatives that your position is "fact-based" (see Step 3) and "has the support of the people" (see Step 2)
Step 5: Dismiss any objections as being based in nothing but ignorance, bigotry and racism
Step 6: Feel good and proud of yourself for being so smugly superior to the rest of the world

Don't forget, he (pbuh) "likes it warm, because he's from Hawaii." So fuck the rest of us who bundle up in sweaters during the winter. I'll bet he's got the thermostat on 65 during the summer.

I wish I knew, Mrs. D'oh. When we were in high school, we used to lambaste the enviro-tards, particularly the one Earth Science teacher who used an usually cold winter to "prove" that global warming is occurring.
I noticed this on his FB account when he "liked" several particularly nutty postings from the NRDC. *sighs*. The only reason I got an FB account was to keep track of him and now because of it, I'm kinda forced to see that garbage.

The Sierra Club isn't run by hippies chanting in the woods, it's run by rich lawyers.
There's a fairly even split - at the top - between cynical wealth-grabbing lawyers who want to GET RICH NOW and fire-breathing ideologues who want to make everyone bend to their will.
The mushy middle are the muddle-thinking liberals who want a 3000-ft exclusion radius around each speckle spotted leaping lizard or to squeeze all the carbon out of the air so the plants will choke and die.
I've worked with these people, I'm not guessing.
Most of the donors are simply not willing to think complex thoughts. They won't do it, they just do "what they're supposed to."

20% Toluene.
Raises octane rating about 44 points - i.e. from 91 octane to 93.4

Stretching mileage by two gallons per fill up affords $8.00 of juice.

I'm not a scientist but from what I have been told gasoline has more calories than alchohol so it delivers more mpg than alcohol does. It's denser, alcohol has more octane though. that's why they use it in dragsters.

Oh, so you want mileage. You asked for octane.
Proper tune-up, as lean as your engine will reliably stand. *If* you use high octane fuel you *can* tune the engine leaner and get more mpg, but you have to re-tune.
If you're technical enough you can DIY a solution for a few hundred #. Search online for SAFC or Super Air Fuel Controller. it's the cheapest (AFAICT) proper ratio controller, they're used on a lot of modern cars for a performance boost, but you can also use it to tune for mileage.
They work best with a wideband O2 meter, but that's $$$.
There are *real* tricks to save mileage, but most of them take more work than sticking a gadget on your gas line.

Of course he would be - skyrocketing energy prices shackle everyone by forcing people into positions and places where they are more easily controlled (cities vs rural areas, "high-speed rail" vs automobiles, so on and so forth).
