42 Well, airports are surprisingly resistant to damage. You gotta bomb the crap out of them to put them out of operation for more than a day or two. Which means, you need a lot of bombs. A "first day of the war" strike by B-2s makes good tactical sense. They are virtually invulnerable to the antiquated Libyan air defenses, and they carry a metric shitload of bombs. Also, airports are a nice target for the US in that they tend to not have a lot of civilians living right next to the parts you want to bomb, like the runways and taxiways and ramp spaces.

#6, et al, who've been asking about the B2:

The B2 is stationed in Missouri, and flies to and attacks targets world wide, then returns to US Soil.  This is because there are a huge number of super-secret components inside the B2, including ones we don't even share with our allies.  We don't want anyone to know all the capabilities of the B2.

Also, basing them anywhere but in the US means that a nation can sequester them--deny the use of their airspace if they don't agree with the foreign policy decisions we've made--like France andSpain did the first time we bombed Libya.  If the B2 were based in a country that opted for this, we would be unable to use them.  (Especially given a CinC who wouldn't want to upset anyone.)

The B2's unique stealth abilities allows it to drop 2K pound JDAMs and other munitions that can be used against very specific targets--guided by GPS, with terminal guidance from the aircrew.  This allows the B2 to hit exactly what it is aiming at (Chinese Embassy.)  Further, because it is so stealthy, it can be used to strike at radar facilities and Surface to Air Missile sites and equipment with relative impunity--they can turn on their search/aquisition radars to try to find the B2--but will likely get a HARM anti-radar missile for their troubles.  The other option left is to shoot blind--which has a success rate about equal to playing Keno.

There still exists a threat from low-altitude AAA, the SA-7 and the DShK machine guns, but the B2 allows the other aircraft to fight almost with impunity from medium to high altitudes, since the enemy is either unable to hit them, or unwilling to power up its radars.

Crazee, your heart's in the right place, but respectfully, I think what the next conservative administration needs to consider is getting the Feds out of educational matters. Note that it is the standardized testing that is creating the perverse incentives in the first place.

57 I actually agree with you, I'm just not sure anyone will ever have the balls to do it. Conservatives always talk about eliminating or limiting federal departments, and it just never happens. I support it, but we have to think Plan B, Plan C, etc.

 Liberals play this short game/long game strategy well. If they can't change things now, they implement changes that help them down the road. If we can't eliminate the DoE, I think Plan B could be taking advantage of the institutional power we have to shape the curricula in a way that benefits us in terms of educating children. Whenever we can't do what we want, we always just give up and never try to shirt the agenda. Just a thought, though. I'm certainly no expert on this stuff, other than seeing how terrible our educational system is firsthand. I'm a pretty bright guy, I got a 34 on my ACT test. Experience has shown, however, that big-government conservatism is an oxymoron in practice as well as in theory. One person, one administration is never in charge long enough to stick to such a plan and see it through, and it only ends up as an own-goal in the end.

Education was none too good when I was in school, either. I did very well on the SAT, but no thanks to my schools. I had to educate myself, for the most part.

Yes, the President must inform Congress when he commits troops, but an earlier clause says WHEN he CAN commit troops...

Act of War, Specific authorization through legislation, OR if American Troops, or Territory is under imminent threat of attack... and THATS IT!

Now the President could send troops in to defend NATO, as there is specific legislation already in place allowing him to do so... as with other treaty partners...
