— Ace It is shot like a campaign commercial, which I know no one will take as an insult, because her supporters want it to be a campaign commercial.
I'm thinking this is still testing the waters. It's not so terribly different from publishing a book.

Point Thompson is going to be her go to moment? She got her ass handed to her in court because she didn't have a legal leg to stand on and more then that, she was wrong. This is the conservative position? Break binding legal leases because the state says so regardless that the economics of anyone drilling at Point Thompson right now makes no fiscal sense?
I'm just shaking my head.

But all you need to know is that the biggest defenders of ACES are Democrats and liberal Republicans. Palin's signature attack on oil in Alaska is has crippled exploration in the state, so the one thing she had going in terms of energy knowledge is mere blather.
AGIA, the Alaska-Gasline Inducement Act and her other signature accomplisment, has collapsed and the state is looking at a $500 million boondoggle to spur development of a $40 billion gas line with no customers in the lower 48 because of the shale boom.
I'll buy that she had to resign, because in Alaska the state attorney general cannot defend the governor from ethics complaints. She was being bankrupted and had to quit. Such a situation wouldn't happen as president, but that's irrelevant considering her record as gov.

The reason Palin and the state was doing this is because they needed Point Thomson to be producing gas to legitimize her fantasy pipeline.
Long story short, she lost. EXXON kept the lease and set up it's rig. Should be producing a moderate amount of oil in a few years. They're not moving on the gas because there's still not going to be any way to move it.

In a way, it really does serve as a litmus test for her followers, however. The question must ultimately be asked: what are you people? Are you conservatives or are you simply Sarah Palin fans? As in, do you hew to a set of free-market, small-government, conservative principles that should make you blanch in horror at what Palin did in the excerpt given here...or are you just cheering because, hey, Palin stuck it to The Man!
One way or another it will be a revealing moment.

I really hate this when fans of the book go off about the film. Nobody wants to see the hero lose in a film. It's the directors film and he can make any changes he likes. Having her off half the board and snatch the leases is just some poetic license.

I don't know what language that is but I think I made out where you were crowing about the Denali pipeline plan shutting down. Do you know why they shutdown and TransCanada hasn't yet? Denali was using company money to look into the pipeline prospects, they report to shareholders and the bottom line is a pipeline isn't economically viable right now.
TransCanada doesn't have to quit till they use up the states 500 million. They still can't make a pipeline of course because they don't any commitments to fill it and they never will.

"Because the contractual agreement between DNR and the appellants precludes the termination of the Point Thomson Unit in these circumstances without consideration of "good and diligent oil and gas engineering and production practices," and because DNR(State of Alaska) failed to accord the Appellants their constitutional right to procedural due process in the remand proceeding, DNR's(State of Alaska) decision is reversed."

It's impossible to produce on all the leases. There just isn't enough equipment to do so. They produce on the land that is most economically feasible. They secure most leases for future development. Doesn't make any difference if the producer has the lease for five years or fifty, if the money doesn't work out they're going to sit on them. They answer to their shareholders not the state. If they are legally meeting the requirements of the lease that's all that matters.

One reason Palin was popular is that she got a higher royalty for the oil in Alaska. She wasn't serving the oil companies the way other politicians were.
Yeah, there's a fine line between this point and utter populism. I think this video crosses that line, too. Hopefully the full movie has more details that better explain the situation.
Posted by: Dustin at May 25, 2011 10:59 PM (Q3nWV)
On what planet are people eager to sit through a 2 hour campaign video? Why not spend the money on 30 second commercials?
For 90% of Americans, if you gave them the choice between watching a two hour political campaign video or spending two hours getting ass-raped by a rhinoceros, they'd be reaching for the nearest jar of Vaseline.
If it takes 2 freaking hours to make your case, you've lost. On the other hand, the projectionist will take her example to heart and decide to take a better paying job half way through.
Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 25, 2011 11:08 PM (WRW1S)
yeah Alaskan citizens get dividend checks from the oil and gas companies like Kuwait!!! Its our damn land so we should get paid for the oil and gas !!!
Alaska gives an entirely new meaning to the phrase "welfare state".
Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 25, 2011 11:14 PM (WRW1S)
Yes it's their damn land, and I think Palin fought some corruption from oil companies (ordinarily I do not agree with the demonization of oil companies, btw).
Still... Alaska does not come across well when I read about this kind of stuff. No wonder Murkowski did well there.
I do wish each candidate did something more like a 2 hour video, or even a book (They actually wrote, instead of relying on a ghost author). The problems in this country are very complicated and require a lot of discussion.
Not that you're wrong. 99% of voters will not watch or read a single such thing, let alone enough to compare many candidates.

That's the crony capitalism she talks about and she seeks to use the government power to prevent, not enable, the Corrupt Bastards of the Industry/Govt complex from just having their way.
