Preview of New Palin Film
— Ace

It is shot like a campaign commercial, which I know no one will take as an insult, because her supporters want it to be a campaign commercial.

I'm thinking this is still testing the waters. It's not so terribly different from publishing a book.

6 Hannity showed a preview of Sarah PalinÂ’s new movie which focused on AlaskaÂ’s fight with Exxon over drilling. Apparently Exxon was trying to postpone drilling on land they had leased from the state and Alaska decided if they werenÂ’t going to drill, they wanted the land back.

Point Thompson is going to be her go to moment? She got her ass handed to her in court because she didn't have a legal leg to stand on and more then that, she was wrong. This is the conservative position? Break binding legal leases because the state says so regardless that the economics of anyone drilling at Point Thompson right now makes no fiscal sense?
I'm just shaking my head.

36 Palin's record as governor is nothing to be proud about. ACES, the oil tax regime that is one of her two major accomplishments as governor, is a disaster. When oil is over $80 a barrel, the state of Alaska takes 90-93 percent of the profit. It has killed exploration. There is one - ONE - exploration well being drilled this year while oil has been over $100/barrel because the oil companies won't reinvest where they can't make money, and the federal situation isn't any better with the EPA shutting down the Arctic and NPR-A.

But all you need to know is that the biggest defenders of ACES are Democrats and liberal Republicans. Palin's signature attack on oil in Alaska is has crippled exploration in the state, so the one thing she had going in terms of energy knowledge is mere blather.

AGIA, the Alaska-Gasline Inducement Act and her other signature accomplisment, has collapsed and the state is looking at a $500 million boondoggle to spur development of a $40 billion gas line with no customers in the lower 48 because of the shale boom.

I'll buy that she had to resign, because in Alaska the state attorney general cannot defend the governor from ethics complaints. She was being bankrupted and had to quit. Such a situation wouldn't happen as president, but that's irrelevant considering her record as gov.

40 Since the thread isn't moving anyways I'll give a little primer on Point Thomson. Point Thomson stinks with gas, just a huge reserve. EXXON and others have most the long term leases sewn up. Problem is with all this gas there isn't really a way to get it to market feasibly. So the producers sit on the leases and make plans of action(POA) to produce in the future. So after pressure from the state to finally start doing something to produce EXXON submits a POA to set up one rig to produce some oil, meeting all the requirements of the renewable lease. The state starts throwing roadblocks at EXXON by denying permits, etc. it then tries to takes the lease away claiming EXXON wasn't working in good faith to develop there. Off to court it goes.
The reason Palin and the state was doing this is because they needed Point Thomson to be producing gas to legitimize her fantasy pipeline.
Long story short, she lost. EXXON kept the lease and set up it's rig. Should be producing a moderate amount of oil in a few years. They're not moving on the gas because there's still not going to be any way to move it.

41 I guess my opinion should be discounted given my biases, but man...Sarah Palin really isn't doing any favors by focusing on stuff like *this* in her movie-mercial, or whatever it is.  It's anti-conservative, populist guff.

In a way, it really does serve as a litmus test for her followers, however.  The question must ultimately be asked: what are you people?  Are you conservatives or are you simply Sarah Palin fans?  As in, do you hew to a set of free-market, small-government, conservative principles that should make you blanch in horror at what Palin did in the excerpt given here...or are you just cheering because, hey, Palin stuck it to The Man!

One way or another it will be a revealing moment.

phony ethical complaints, that was the Kafkaesque moment, that told her, they

I don't know what language that is but I think I made out where you were crowing about the Denali pipeline plan shutting down. Do you know why they shutdown and TransCanada hasn't yet? Denali was using company money to look into the pipeline prospects, they report to shareholders and the bottom line is a pipeline isn't economically viable right now.
TransCanada doesn't have to quit till they use up the states 500 million. They still can't make a pipeline of course because they don't any commitments to fill it and they never will.

No, she lost. Here's the ruling.

"Because the contractual agreement between DNR and the appellants precludes the termination of the Point Thomson Unit in these circumstances without consideration of "good and diligent oil and gas engineering and production practices," and because DNR(State of Alaska) failed to accord the Appellants their constitutional right to procedural due process in the remand proceeding, DNR's(State of Alaska) decision is reversed."

Posted by: t-bird at May 26, 2011 12:11 AM (FcR7P) Well, I assume that with a natural resource like oil, the companies don't actually OWN it with a lease, the government of Alaska is merely outsourcing the drilling to those companies, for the purpose of getting the oil flowing. It's basically like getting hired to do a job, and for that they get granted access to the oil. But if they're just going to sit on it and do nothing, then I don't see why the state of Alaska wouldn't want to renegotiate things. I could just be completely wrong though. That's just my assumption. I don't know why else it would be an issue. Then again, I guess that's what watching the full video is for instead of this clip.

It's impossible to produce on all the leases. There just isn't enough equipment to do so. They produce on the land that is most economically feasible. They secure most leases for future development. Doesn't make any difference if the producer has the lease for five years or fifty, if the money doesn't work out they're going to sit on them. They answer to their shareholders not the state. If they are legally meeting the requirements of the lease that's all that matters.

80 @44 &45... right on. Jeff B especially, that is the KEY question, one that I have not seen asked, and I've been around this big ol net since it Algore invented it. Her whole "80% popularity claim" was based almost exclusively on the HUGE dividend checks she was able to give to the voters. She was popular because she was spreadin' the (federal taxpayer, increased oil taxes) wealth around...Now she's against removing oil subsidies, against the very earmarks that made her so flippin' popular. Her fans don't know, don't care, they just like her hair. This film is going to be a truly, legendary, epic fail.

81 Entertainment Tonight never mentioned the Pawlenty news. Or Perry. Odd. Even with all the Oprah adulation there is always time for Palin. In the entertainment media/hard news circle jerk, only Palin keeps any alternative point of view or sense of urgency visible on both halves. Breitbart counts it as a victory and so do I. Now what are you going to do about it, Overton Window?

82 Now this was really interesting.  It was the exact same ignorant "use it or lose it" argument recently used against Big Oil by the Obama regime.

Of course, those of us who've been paying attention already knew that one of Palin's main "achievements" as governor was going after the oil companies.

85 The oil belongs to Alaska.  I don't see the point in going after lessees who are abiding their contracts, but I think Alaska was justified in undoing some of the deals oil companies made with some Republicans in Alaska.  They did have something of a corruption problem.  Just because the democrats pretend big oil is pure evil doesn't mean there isn't a degree of cronyism to some of their dealings.

One reason Palin was popular is that she got a higher royalty for the oil in Alaska.  She wasn't serving the oil companies the way other politicians were.

Yeah, there's a fine line between this point and utter populism.  I think this video crosses that line, too.  Hopefully the full movie has more details that better explain the situation.

If it takes 2 freaking hours to make your case, you've lost.  On the other hand, the projectionist will take her example to heart and decide to take a better paying job half way through.

yeah Alaskan citizens get dividend checks from the oil and gas companies like Kuwait!!! Its our damn land so we should get paid for the oil and gas !!!

Alaska gives an entirely new meaning to the phrase "welfare state".

Posted by: Hollowpoint at May 25, 2011 11:14 PM (WRW1S)

88 Hollowpoint, it's hard to argue in Alaska's defense, I agree.  They get so much federal money, yet they also have tremendous resources.  Texas uses her oil to pay for universities.  Alaska could have world class schools instead of checks offered in exchange for... nothing apparent, but I assume populist politics.

Yes it's their damn land, and I think Palin fought some corruption from oil companies (ordinarily I do not agree with the demonization of oil companies, btw).

Still... Alaska does not come across well when I read about this kind of stuff.  No wonder Murkowski did well there.

I do wish each candidate did something more like a 2 hour video, or even a book (They actually wrote, instead of relying on a ghost author).  The problems in this country are very complicated and require a lot of discussion.

Not that you're wrong.  99% of voters will not watch or read a single such thing, let alone enough to compare many candidates.

Hollowpoint: Welcome to the 21st Century. Things are different here.

I'm pretty certain that the desire for free shit at the expense of others isn't a 21st century phenomenon.

If you went back in time 10,000 years ago, I'm pretty sure that you'd find cavemen justifying to themselves why they deserved free shit from those living in all the other caves.

No she didn't, they were already fulfilling their contract. She did everything she could do to make them default on the contract. And when it came down to it she lost, in court.

She's lying when says otherwise. Something you supporters seem to forget, she's a politician, they've been known to lie.

So out of nowhere she decided to sue them , so she could later lie about it?

Yeah right, no really..

But let's keep pretending the public agrees with us.  The "Us vs the liberals" mentality sure is working nowadays.

She didn't sue anybody. The state was hamstringing EXXON then illegally revoked their lease. They sued her and won.

99 Lowandslow , the move was to get Exxon to drill as obligated , did they?

No, the move was to take the leases away. EXXON had a plan of development that was in place long before Palin became Governor. They would have put the one rig up if Palin was there or not.

Nothing like a Palin thread to run up the post count. Ace, you are a GENIUS. You don't support Palin, but you will ride her (figuratively speaking) all the way to higher thread counts.

Shame you don't support Rick Perry, the real GOP choice for POTUS.

Posted by: Dick_Nixon at May 26, 2011 05:46 AM (kaOJx)

104 Pawlenty supported cap-and-trade and hawked ethanol subsidies. But that's okay 'cuz it was a long time ago. Huntsman is an Obamaite and has few if any conservative positions. But, stardust. Romney was pro-choice and pro-government healthcare until he wasn't, but hey, he's electable. Sarah Palin try to fight corrupt deals with oil oligopolies? She's both a traitor to conservativism and far too conservative to get elected. I see what you did there.

107 Is the movie going to be called, "The Passion of the Sarah"?

Posted by: tinkerbella at May 26, 2011 08:51 AM (XEGK/)

108 Indeed, Sarah Palin is considering a run. There would be no reason to waste money on such a thing in Iowa unless that was the case (unless Ms Palin has a really weird sense of humor).

I think she is strongly leaning that way but still weighing things (that is, checking the fund raising prospects).

Posted by: Full Moon at May 26, 2011 10:17 AM (m75CK)

Sarah is pro free enterprise and big business is usually a co-conspirator with big government against the free market.

That's the crony capitalism she talks about and she seeks to use the government power to prevent, not enable, the Corrupt Bastards of the Industry/Govt complex from just having their way.

Its a good instinct.
