— Ace They don't say that exactly but their patience is running out, just a bit more slowly than most.
The effort to weaken bargaining rights for public-sector unions has been particularly divisive, with some people questioning the need to tackle such a fundamental issue to solve the stateÂ’s budget problems. But more often the conversation has turned to the proposals to increase public workersÂ’ contributions to their pensions and health care, and on these issues people said they were less sympathetic, and often grew flushed and emotional telling stories of their own pay cuts and financial worries.
Here in Janesville, a city of about 60,000 an hour southeast of Madison, Crystal Watkins, a preschool teacher at a Lutheran church, said she was paid less than public school teachers and got fewer benefits. “I don’t have any of that,” she said. “But I’m there every day because I love the kids.”
In Palmyra, a small village bounded by farmland and forests, MaryKay Horter remembered how her husbandÂ’s Chevy dealership had teetered on the brink of closing after General Motors declared bankruptcy, for which she blamed unions.
Ms. Horter said she was forced to work more hours as an occupational therapist, but had not seen a raise or any retirement contributions from her employer for the last two years. All told, her familyÂ’s income has dropped by about a third.
“I don’t get to bargain in my job, either,” she said.

Pension payments (for Govt. Employees) should be forfeited if there is another source of income for as long as that other income source is available.
Wanna be a councilman? Fine, you're giving up your pension for that amount of time. No double-dipping.
Though, I'm sorry to see us losing the battle over the terms of the debate. The law (as I understand it) does not limit their rights to bargain collectively for salaries, only for benefits/pensions. However, the MBM has quite successfully dropped that to the shorthand "Prohibit collective bargaining."

Ha. According to Gallup, 61% oppose Walker's collective bargaining bill. I doubt more than 23% of Americans know what that is, and it is all depended on how the questions were asked. Walker won an election last november on a union busting platform. Which poll do we take seriously.

But. This would not be a problem (or as large a problem as it is) if state governments (mostly Dem, but surely some Repub too) hadn't been dipping into those pension funds all these years. Many years, they simply chose not to fund their portion of the promised funds.
So, while I have no love for public unions or their members, this can really all be laid at the feet of state politicians who promised them benefits but figured their Ponzi scheme would last longer than it has.
We should all be working at putting federal pension laws in place that do not allow public pensions to be raided or not funded. It is against the law for a private employer not to fund his/her pension plan. It should be the same for states.
Democrats have been spending more than the revenues coming in for a lot longer than we have known. Now, when it comes to pay the piper, the taxpayers are going tobe stuck with the bill. Well, screw that!
Posted by: Chi-Town Jerry at February 22, 2011 11:21 AM (f9c2L)
How about we simplify that by making Government-held pensions illegal? Make them have the pension be administered by some third (and, preferably, out-of-state) party?
Then, that third party can just shut down the pension if it doesn't get funded one year, and they'll have their fiduciary responsibility to their stock-holders to do business properly so they don't run out of money when people start retiring.

He has always said that the reason schools suck and yet we pay out the wazoo to 'educate' our kids is.......the NEA.
15 years ago a teacher could make okay money, but to make more they had to do more (coach, tutor, clean the schools, etc.) Now, they make double and do nothing but teach their class.
Most unions make sure that 'teachers aren't responsible for keeping their own classrooms clean, decorated, stocked' in their contracts.

Personally, I would fund an annuity managed by some third party.. let's say Fidelity or one of those big ones.. Those things are based on actual contributions and gains/losses. That's the apparent theory behind so-called "defined contribution" pension plans. You put in X amount, and we'll pay out based on how well we did. More or less.
My problem is that, as far as I know, that money is still held by the Govt. and can be raided whenever they want. If you made it an independent 3rd party, you wouldn't fix all of it, but you'd make the corruption a little more difficult.
Personally, I'd rather just keep that 12 - 20% of my paycheck. With that, I can invest in whatever IRA sheltered account I want and probably do better than most 401(k) plans that are offered.

I have only a little problem with the trade unions. If they demand too much and the management gives in, the business fails. Self leveling, if you ask me. Where it becomes an issue is when:
A.) You're required to join a union to be employed. In this country, you have the right to associate with whomever you choose. You also (should) have the right to NOT associate. Right to work is the only moral way to go.
B.) Your union drives the company into the ground and the government comes in and bails you out, screwing the owners and the taxpayer. (That's what's called win-win in union / socialist circles.)
Most union slugs fail to realize that the company only has x amount they can spend on a given worker. If you want to send part of that amount to the UAW, the IBEW, SEIU, or whatever, be my guest. The money doesn't magically appear just because you want to pay dues and have one of their people represent you when you get caught smoking dope on your lunch break.
So while I think that trade unions are generally a bad idea, hey, it's America. You have the right to be watch reality TV, play the lottery, drink cheap beer, and join a union. (Ok, I take it back about the cheap beer. That actually has some medicinal value.)
Where I get absolutely batshit is with the public employee unions. They have absolutely no place in our society. They exist to siphon money and power away from the citizen and line the pockets of the socialists.
Posted by: GGinNC at February 22, 2011 11:50 AM (x7byD)
There is a world of difference between trade unionism and the punkass organized crime represented by government unions. Not the least of which is the fact that private sector collective bargaining involves adversarial parties. When it's between a government and government unions, the only "bargaining" is how to divvy up the loot that they collectively stole from a third party - the taxpayers. When the people "negotiating" "against" a union took that union's political contributions, it's no wonder these fuckers have driven states to the precipice of insolvency.
Exit question: let's say the sovereign government of the United States of America enters collective bargaining talks with the Amalgamated Brotherhood of Gubmint Clockwatchers. The talks break down. Who comes in to arbitrate?
