PSA: NO DOOM TODAY
— Monty

Though Irene wasn't as devastating as many had feared (or hoped, in the case of the MSM), it's still a fact that lots of folks are still dealing with the mess left in the storm's wake. I'm going to dispense with the DOOM this morning and give you some soft music to start your day.

I was in the dark for 26 hours and after the lights came back on and I went thru the house and made sure everything was in order and just as I got back to sleep, the Alarm Company sent me an automated phone message telling me my system reset. Thanks alot Alarm Company.

Oh, I don't know: a little bluesy, a little melancholy, but nothing too down. That's Monday in a nutshell to me.

And one of the great jazz singers (Ella) and one of the great jazz guitarists (Joe Pass) on stage at the same time? Pure bliss.

At JWF, the beginning of a new meme.

All of this comes as Republicans looking to unseat Obama next year ramp up their operations and their rhetoric, piling on a president who at this stage in the game looks vulnerable to the point of being an underdog against an unknown opponent

It's mean to pick on the poor guy, ya know. We all know he's doing badly, so you shouldn't mention it.

Duffy's office received that news earlier this week from parade organizers. His office was also told no Republicans will be allowed this year.

Morning, all!  I hope all my fellow east coast M&M's came through Irene relatively unscathed.  My section of New Hampshire was only slightly damaged - mostly from flooding - but more northern regions from the White Mountains on up got slammed hard.

Anyone here from VT? I hear they got hit with some epic flooding.

Mr Obama pleaded not guilty at his remand hearing, but was held in custody because of the immigration warrant. He now faces a legal battle. His sister Zeituni eventually won the right to live in America despite an earlier deportation order. Margaret Wong, the Cleveland lawyer who successfully represented Zeituni, confirmed through a representative last night that she has also been retained to defend Mr Obama.

Lovely.  And who exactly is paying to fly Ms. Wong around from city to city to defend these tapeworms?  Never mind, I think I already know the exceedingly unfortunate answer to that one.

Do we get to yell "hypocrisy!" now?  Since, after all, the most important thing is to protect our beloved earth-mother Gaia and not do anything to upset her frail temperment, isn't having 3 buses driven to meet you at the next airport to which you're flying a little, I dunno, wasteful?  Not being as "conservationist" as you should?  A little lacking in the "green" department?

And, worse, it means he really is taking his cues from Saint Sarah.  She did a "bus tour" (including the flying to meet the buses to some extent) across the nation (and is doing another right now, yes?) so he must do the same.  So that he can be seen to be "one of us."  Or something.

RATES of mental illnesses including depression and post-traumatic stress will increase as a result of climate change, a report to be released today says.

The paper, prepared for the Climate Institute, says loss of social cohesion in the wake of severe weather events related to climate change could be linked to increased rates of anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress and substance abuse.

I canÂ’t buy the lie and it donÂ’t matter
Even though I try to keep my health
It all seems the same, such a silly game
Played by silly fools who donÂ’t even follow their own rules

But oh, when the sunshine follows me around
Lifts my feet and takes me from the ground
High enough to see the shelf
And know that I was educated by myself

I have seen the streets groaning, not battered
Though amongst us all, we kept our wealth
And though the rain goes pitter-patter,
It donÂ’t change the pain that we all felt

But oh, when the sunshine follows us around
Lifts our feet and takes us from the ground,
High enough for us to tell
That we were educated by ourselves

ItÂ’s a simple dream, a common pattern
A universal scheme for us to sell
And though itÂ’s a long, long way between Mars and Saturn,
But right here on Earth, we know so well
That all we need is sunshine on the ground
And smiles and smiles and smiles from frown to frown
Just enough for us to yell
That we were educated by ourselves

AllenG, Dallas' problem is they choke on the big ones. See Romo. The Skins #1s O and D shutdown the Ravens #1s in the first quarter. By the 2nd qtr the Ravens D lines were stunting to stop the Skins. Ravens played their #1 O into the second half while all Skins starters were on the sidelines. Very embarrassing for Ravens fans. Preseason is normally plain vanilla O and D. When your #1s resort to stunts in the 2nd Qtr you know you things are off track.

Gibson imports fretboards made of an endangered east Indian wood, incorporating them into the guitars. The fretboards are started in India, but not finished until they are incorporated into the guitars. The Indian government has no problem with this. The Obama administration disagrees with the Indian government's interpretation of Indian law.

Martin and Gibson has been trading on their former performance for years. You can get much better guitars from either Alvarez Yari or Taylor for much less money. That being said, I don't discount the Union label is in play here. The age of Sparkipus is still going strong. All hail the union boss.

Meh.  It's the pre-season, and they still have two weeks to get things together.  Not a lot of time, but not impossible, either.

And, yes, I do wish we had someone with Tony Romo's level of pure talent, and Troy Aikman's level of consistency (well, before the all the concussions, anyway).  The pre-season for us looked pretty good, too, though.  I'm hoping the defense can gel in the next two weeks- Rob Ryan brought in, not just a whole new playbook, but whole new terminology and his own brand of crazy, too.

If the D can gel, our O looks solid (Dez Bryant looks like he learned to be less of a punk, for one thing) so we'll see.  I'm still nervous about our Running Back situation and our Corner Back situation.  I'm (cautiously) predicting 9 - 7.  I have hope for 11 - 5.  I won't be surprised by 7 - 9.  I may slit my wrists if we're at 6 - 10 or less.

71 Good Lord. This is what they're worried about? Trees? Like, cut one down and another one will grow, trees? Madagascar is basically nothing but trees.

The key statement:

John Thomas, a law professor at Quinnipiac University and a blues and ragtime guitarist, says "there's a lot of anxiety, and it's well justified." Once upon a time, he would have taken one of his vintage guitars on his travels. Now, "I don't go out of the country with a wooden guitar."

Government run amuck. Fish and Wildlife joins the growing list of agencies in need of Bachmann's mother of all repeal bills.

Would agree your running back and secondary are issues. I also think your receivers may find life as a number one is much more difficult than playing number two receiver. Your front D line is solid. I haven't been able to see enough of your O line to have an opinon.

@56

While at Treasury [Krueger was Geithner's asst. secretary for awhile], Mr. Krueger worked on analyses of a variety of programs, including tax incentives to encourage employers to hire the employed, the "cash for clunkers" initiative to jump-start auto purchases and Build America taxable municipal bonds.

Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner, through a spokeswoman, said that "given his expertise in labor economics, he is precisely the right choice to lead the CEA at this moment in history."

So we've got that going for us.

79 another depressing article about the real estate market.

Tyler's take versus bloomberg's take:  "Consumer spending climbed more than forecast in July as Americans dipped into savings to buy cars and cool their homes, showing the biggest part of the economy is holding up."

Anyone here from VT? I hear they got hit with some epic flooding.

Posted by: MWR, Proud Tea(rrorist) Party Hobbit at August 29, 2011 08:48 AM (4df7R)

Upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine are an incredibly devastated mess this morning.  Over 300 roads closed in Vermont (where I'm located -- many of them washed out completely.  Power is out for thousands and it may be weeks before it's restored.  Many bridges wiped out and one fatality, thus far.  It will take many billions of dollars in Vermont alone to repair the damage.  Worst disaster since the 1927 flood.

But it's not New York City, so it doesn't count.

82 73 Good Lord. This is what they're worried about? Trees? Like, cut one down and another one will grow, trees? Madagascar is basically nothing but trees.

I believe the issue is Ebony. A very slow growing tree that yields dense wood for instruments (oboes, clarinets, and fretboards for guitars, violins, violas, cellos and basses). Martin probably has a huge inventory of it pre-Lacy law in CONUS, while Gibson is offshoring it. So it looks like Martin wants to squeeze its competition or force Gibson to buy wood from them. The problem is Gibson probably sells 10 guitars for every 1 sold by Martin. Only the higher end guitars get ebony. Most lower end guitars are equipped with rosewood (a less dense wood).  My opinion is that both Martin and Gibson are overpriced for the quality they deliver.

85 Date Line: DALLAS, TX

A strange phenomenon seems to be causing drops of water to fall from the sky.  Texans are staring in bewilderment as this strange occurrence moistens the soil and pools on sidewalks.

Local meteorologists call this phenomenon "rain" and say that it does occur from time to time.  They warn Texans not to drive too quickly on the formerly parched streets, as oils which had been locked there will rise to the top and cause them to become slippery.  "Be careful out there," one warned during the morning commute.

Texans seem to be taking this advice to heart.  This morning, roadways were veritable parking lots as drivers slowed down.  On the President George Bush Turnpike, drivers had slowed down to 50 miles per hour- 20 miles less than the posted 70 mph speed limit, and 30 miles less than the normal weekday average.

Al Gore could not be reached for comment.

86 84 73 Good Lord. This is what they're worried about? Trees? Like, cut one down and another one will grow, trees? Madagascar is basically nothing but trees. The only thing I'm worried about is having a tree crash thru my windshield as I'm driving down the road. The Northeast has so many trees, midwesterners tend to be freaked out by the sheer density. That's why all this crap about "saving trees" is such a load of donkey dung.

Isn't it curious that all the "we're gonna stay right on top of this for you" heroes from the MBM were nowhere to be found in your neck of the woods during their epic coverage of Irene? Could it be that they wouldn't have been able to duck into the conveniently located bistro for a double latte to keep themselves going had they been out in the woods? Nah!

From the Australian: "Official records say Onyango Obama, 67, was picked up outside the Chicken Bone Saloon in Framingham, Massachusetts, at 7.10pm on August 24. Police say he nearly crashed his Mitsubishi 4x4 into a patrol car, and then insisted that the officer should have given way to him. A report filed with the Framingham District Court said that a breathalyser at the police station registered his blood alcohol at 0.14mg/100ml of blood, above the state limit of 0.08mg."

It looks as if the police acted stupidly again

BTW, why do I have to read foreign newspapers to find out what's going on in my own country?

About a month ago we had a storm come through here.. in less than one hour it knocked down thousands of trees, ripped off roofs and, in the end, cut electricity to 800,000 customers.   And that was just in this small corner of Illinois.  And we didn't make a national friggin' nightmare disaster of it.  just sayin'..

Weather forecast says 106 tomorrow and 86 on Friday.

I only believe one of those numbers.

30% chance of rain today, so I'd better water the lawn to make sure it rains this afternoon.

It will be in the high 90s here today, with a not-so-pleasant side dish of steamy 90% humidity. Yet...only 10% chance of rain.

Ick.

AND, that is my favorite recording of it. Well done!

I picked up one of her CDs from a $5 bin at Circuit City about 15 years ago and simply fell in love with her voice. A couple of years later, I picked up another which had the above recording. She also does a killer I Loves You, Porgy.

Naturally, her music is best enjoyed on a rainy day or while lounging in a dim room, sipping wine.
