— DrewM Above the post update [rdbrewer]: Video from YouTube. For those of you who have been up, you have probably seen most of these scenes already. The footage of the big wave starts at about 2:10.
I want to underscore what they've been saying all night, that the Japanese prepare and drill for this kind of thing. Also, even though the epicenter was only 100km off the coast, the first places hit had about 30 minutes warning. They know because--according to the report I saw--there was a "trial run" a couple of days ago after a 7.2 magnitude quake struck in the same spot. The reason why there was that much warning is because the high speed one hears about (700-800 mph) is the speed of the wave in the open ocean. Near the shore, the waves slow down and pile up. So, again, the people closest to the epicenter had about 30 minutes warning. That doesn't sound like much, but the Japanese know what they're doing. So it might not be as bad as it seems.
Just unbelievable.
As of 3:35am EST, there have been 7 quakes (5.8-6.2) in the last hour, the last HOUR alone. And those are just aftershocks.
In the US...
Hawaii is under a tsunami warning and sirens are going off in Honolulu.
Here's time information for Hawaii and Pacific rim.
Alaska and mainland US are under various advisories or watches.
Starting to see reports that west coast is being bumped up to a Tsunami Warning.
If you are out that way, keep up with your local news for information and potential instructions. This isn't a joke guys. The tsunami(s) may not be as large by the time they get across the Pacific, water is powerful stuff. It doesn't take 12-15 feet waves to ruin your day.
Time information here.
Right now, parts of Japan have simply been devastated. There's no real handle on casualties yet but it's pretty clear those will be significant.
I fear this is going to be a common story.

If this is the same town (and judging by the map it's in the right area), the population is in the neighborhood of 77,000.

Long-time lurker, living in Funabashi, Chiba prefecture, Japan. My little group here is OK, and my employees at the office in Tokyo (I was off today) are waiting for the trains to come back up in true Moron fashion at a standing bar.
The aftershocks have been about as bad as the worst quake I've experienced before today. I can't imagine how bad it is in Sendai. If you know someone in Japan, keep in touch with them. I'm seeing a lot of infrastructure damage on TV here in the Tokyo metro, and that could mean a severe food and water issue in the coming weeks (over 30 million in commuting distance of Tokyo). Fortunately, we had just gotten back from our monthly run to Costco (although the one in Machida doesn't look like it made it).

Looking at those sets rolling into Sendai is INSANE.
I would imagine parts of the Japanese Coast were just liquified by the quake and the Tsunami is just going to pull them out to sea...awful way to go.

Thanks. Shouldn't have taken a natural disaster to get me to post, but shoganai (can't be helped).
Heard from a buddy who's a Navy doc at Yokosuka, and everything seems OK there. He expects that they will be be called in shortly. ANOTHER aftershock in between posts, but they do seem to finally be lessening in intensity. There was one about 45 min ago centered in Fukushima that was a 5.5 on the Japanese scale.
Here in Chiba we have an oil refinery burning out of control, and a fire at one of the ironworks (again, according to the local news). My mother-in-law says she saw the glow from the refinery from here, which is a fair distance.
We're all looking at the bright side...if we've been through this one, we should get a breather for a while.

We've seen Chile and New Zealand and Japan hit repeatedly by big quakes in the last couple of years. I have an awful feeling that the west coast of the US is living on borrowed time. I'm in Western Washington and this is freaking me out.

Too true. What really kills me about this area are the "Volcano Evacuation Routes" in the Tacoma-Puyallup area. Like that's going to work. If/when Mt. Rainier decides to blow those roads will be express lanes for mud and lava not cars. One and a half million people living in the shadow of a 14,000 foot volcano. I don't like those odds.

The government advisory put the estimated arrival time in Hawaii of a first tsunami wave 3 a.m. local time, the advisory said.

I'd call the Kauai rescue folks up to remind 'em, but I don't want to be jogging their elbow right now....and, frankly, if they're prioritizing a couple of dozen campers against a few hundred people in a town, who am I to question their judgment? Fortunately, it's early March, so there shouldn't be too many people out there -- it just strikes me as a pretty uncomfortable situation.

Man, this is just awful. I can't Imagine a quake that big, and I've been in a 6.7.
The death toll is going to be staggering. And Japan is about to go through one of it's longest nights ever. No power, probably no water, fires out of control, and after-shocks that keep coming.
I just hope that the U.S. Navy sends as much help as possible, assuming HI gets spared major damage.

Nuclear Reactor backups that I've seen are Battery Powered. Huge Fucking Batteries. Daisy Chains of them.
Their size and number usually leads to them being stored at or below ground level. I haven't read reports of the facility flooding, but even a few Batteries tipped over can break the chain and disrupt backup power for a few hours or more.
A fire in the Backup system could destroy it, totally.

I never claimed they 'cooled' anything, Vic. I merely pointed out that the emegency shutdown procedures are monitered and operated through a Battery Backup System that can be easily disrupted by a large earthquake, or a fire.
FYI - I disassembled the off-site backup system for the Shoreham Plant in Newark, NJ. piece by piece.
I know how it was layed out and what each piece did. That was how I was able to maximize the scrap value of the job.

The most likely thing is that power was lost to the "Reactor Coolant Pumps" which are large pumps that provided forced flow through the core and the Steam Generators during normal operation.
So they interpret that to mean that the pumps needed to "cool the core" have failed. Those pumps do not "cool the core".

The government has declared an emergency situation at one of Tokyo
Electric Power company's nuclear power plants in quake-stricken
Fukushima Prefecture. It says no radioactive materials have been
leaked.
Tokyo Electric said an equipment failure has made it impossible to cool two reactors at the Fukushima Number One plant.
The firm says it does not have enough electric power to cool the
reactors, which automatically stopped operating when the quake struck.
The government has taken precautionary measures to ensure the safety of
nearby residents. But it says that the residents should remain calm,
and that currently no evacuation is needed.
The power company is sending eight power generators to the site, and the Ground Self Defense Force is sending one more.

This is so awful. It's like Christchurch, but somehow even BIGGER. I've been on and off in tears since 2am, and could barely sleep last night. I have a soft spot for Japan and the Japanese, and seeing such destruction and the potential for even more loss of life...
God protect and save them, and rest the souls of those who have been lost.

I had a simply wonderful young woman from Japan working in my lab back in the day. She's since moved back, but I think she's closer to Tokyo.

Accuweather had a post on the Super Moon (dated Mar 1 2011) and how it is correlated to be near the last major earthquake
SuperMoon coming Mar 19 (and another next month). and the Earthquake/Tsunami last night
Last Super Moon was Jan 10 2005, and there was an Earthquake/Tsunami Dec 26 2004 in Indonesia
Correlation or random chance x2?
And then what are the chances of another earthquake etc event next month?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese. I was fortunate enough to take a trip there (and Korea) a little over a year ago.
The professionalism and efficiency of the Japs was amazing...very refreshing. I have no doubt they'll pull through something like this.

A quake six times more powerful in Japan doesn't mean it'll have six times more casualties than the one in Indonesia or Haiti.
