— Ace When you say "That's a good picture of you," isn't that an insult?
You're not saying "You look good." You are instead saying "This artificial, limited representation of you makes you look good, or, at least, better than you actually do in reality."
You have just established that that picture either 1, is misleading in making the subject appear more attractive than in reality, or 2, even if not misleading per se, establishes the upper bound of the subject's possible attractiveness.
If a picture is "good," or, worse yet, "really good," that essentially fixes the uppermost possible level of attractiveness for a subject at that moment and in that light. It's all downhill from there.
You might as well hold up the picture and say, "For good or ill, this is as good as it conceivably gets for you. Deal with it."
This occurred to me because I noticed Joan Walsh's picture on Twitter makes her look average and not awful, as she actually is in reality, and I thought, "That's a good picture of her" in the bad way I mean above.
But it's always actually meant in a bad way.
"That's a horrible picture of you" is, counterintuitively, a more complimentary statement. If I'm in a contest between me myself an a picture, any statement that puts me above the picture is a positive statement. Any statement that puts me below that picture is negative.

Thankfully, no pictures of me exist due to the penchant of my countenance breaking every camera lens known to man. Thus I cannot say if that's an insult.

I read a variant of that somewhere and it really stuck with me. Compliment the person, not the clothing or whatever. "You look good in that color" not "That color looks good on you" etc. It really is amazing what a difference that makes since you are centering the focus on the person, not on the object. People like that.

Ace, pass that over here.
My wife is beautiful (to me at least), but she photographs terribly. If she knows she is being snapped, she gets a goofy fake smile that makes her look funny looking (to me at least).
So when I say that she looks good in the picture, what I am really saying is that "you didnt ruin your natural beauty with your goofy fake smile."
In other words, many times I am commenting on the photo quality (light/exposure/naturalness of the pose, etc) and not the actual appearance of the subject.
Analogy: Dude, that guitar recording of you is really good. In no way does this imply that his guitar playing is normally bad, just that the recording is good.
Why the hell am I wasting my time on this post.

wowzers I just heard about Allen West's latest moment of awesomesauce!
"You have this 21st-century plantation that
has been out there. Where the Democrat Party has forever taken the black
vote for granted and you have established certain black leaders who are
nothing more than the overseers of that plantation. And now the people
on that plantation are upset because they've been disregarded,
disrespected and their concerns are not cared about.
So I'm here as the modern-day Harriet
Tubman to kind of lead people on the underground railroad away from that
plantation into a sense of sensibility."

Posted by: Jane D'oh at August 18, 2011 03:11 PM (UOM48)
Nah. I think you have some mental aberration on this one. Old time, Brownie Instamatic type photos almost always looked bad, especially that the photographer generally had no clue about lighting, elements, framing, etc.
So if someone said, "that's a good picture of you" it was really more of a commentary on the photographer, generally someone that the subject of the photo knew such as Gramps.
Anymore, even with cameras so much improved and affordable, the photographer screws it all up just the same. I think the saying just hasn't faded as fast as the old photos.

1. There is you, the perfect Ace, unsullied by filters or intermediaries.
2. The camera is an imperfect instrument, with limitations like two-dimensionality and the distortions inherent in passing light through a lens and having it either projected onto film or digitized into bits.
3. Since an imperfect instrument cannot capture the platonic Ace, in all your Aceness, the best we can do is approach a representation of Aceitude.
4. Thus, if somebody says "That's a good picture of you," or words to that effect, what they're actually saying is "with the technology at hand, and bearing in mind that such imperfect technology cannot accurately represent Ace in all his Aceitudinality, that is a reasonably good representation of Aceness."

In one of Rush's books (IIRC, it was in "See, I Told You So"), Rush recounted an NYT (?) op-ed by a Princeton professor who postulated that an advanced alien race is waiting patiently for "The Moment", basically when all hell breaks loose environmentally, so that they can take over everything. That kind of thought (aliens destroying Earth because humans are evil, polluting, war-like animals) has been circulating throughout academia and even in prominent books for decades.
Bruce Coville's "My Teacher is an Alien" series has this as a background threat, that the equivalent of the alien UN sees humanity as a blight on the universe and that we must be destroyed lest we will infect all.

There's an interview with Elmore Leonard somewhere that would be worth reading. He's of the opinion that movies and books are such different mediums that the objective of the screenwriter is to get the character right, not worry about matching events. (And this was related to Leonard given an advice to a scriptwriter adapting one of Leonard's works, not the other way around.)

If we are going to accept "you aren't going to catch and punish me so it isn't the law" as a legal principle then everybody had better get their shit together *right* quick because the war of all against all is ringin' your freakin' doorbell.
I don't accept that. Again, I am on your side. Really.
But, for example, Libya is not impeachable. The War Powers Act is of dubious constitutionality and if you want to litigate Libya, you'll end up making a determination on the War Powers Act first.
Your point about selective enforcement of voting laws - well, prosecutorial discretion is real - and allowable. Ask any attorney. Now in the case of the NBPP case, walking away after you've already won the case is mind-numbingly stupid. But, not illegal. Same goes for DOMA.
There are problems with your list. I also stipulated, you might actually have a point with Fast and Furious. But thinking that goes all the way to Obama and proving it are two separate issues. There's no point in spending millions to go on an impeachment fishing expedition hoping you'll find the smoking gun that definiteively proves JEF is the Marxist we all know him to be.
Too much of your list is in the gray, and impeachment has to be black and white.

Pats also went to a Superbowl in 84(yeah they were Da Bears victim, noone from the AFC was winning that) and Parcells took them to a SB with Bledsoe.
That was in 1986. I distinctly remember because I had just driven 18 straight hours from Fort Benning to the garden spot of Fort Riley, Kansas in the dead of winter arriving at 6 am to a gray sky, brown earth and no trees.
The next day was the Super Bowl. Pats drew first blood. Then were crushed 52-10.
The next day the Challenger exploded.

Yesterday, the Washington Post asked me to comment on conservative concerns about Texas GOP Gov. Rick PerryÂ’s records.
Here is what I told them in full:
“The Gardasil debacle is just one of many concerns a wide range of grass-roots conservative activists have about Perry’s record as governor. He’s soft on illegal immigration despite a few recent nods to border enforcement. He’s prone to crony capitalism. And as the vaccine mandate scandal shows, he demonstrated Nanny State tendencies that are anathema to Tea Party core principles.

She said he was a crony capitalist because his biggest donor got a bit state contract. What she didn't say is that he was the only bidder and that it was for a NUCLEAR WASTE STORAGE FACILITY.
The she looked like MSNBC in editing Perry's quotes on the guardisil thing.

You know, I don't care about the primary attacks, but what she's doing - insinuating that the fact that Perry doesn't appear in the 100s of emails she's sifting through proves he was involved in something shady with Merck and now moving on to other ethics charges - could damage Perry to the point that we'd lose him as a governor. If there are going to be problems, find them and deal with them now. The "crony capitalist" charge is not a trivial one, and needs to be sorted out quickly. The Rezko-JEF connection could suddenly blow up in March, but Perry will still receive no passes. Then there's Perry's position on immigration, and his speech at a La Raza event; with a few discoveries and the correct spin, and maybe a JEF-Cowboys-Up-On-The-Border event or two, this could turn off a lot of otherwise motivated voters. We don't need people to vote by staying home.
We do have other, good candidates this time: Bachmann, maybe Ryan. Now is the time to vet everyone thoroughly. We should not disqualify anyone before June 2012

Are we gonna have a Perry cult like the Obama cult where nobody can disagree with him or you should die?
No. But are we going to selectively quote to set up a strawman which we then burn down?
So far it appears the answer is "yes" to MM.
I'm not a Perry fanboy. But he deserves better than he's getting from "our" side so far.
Posted by: Sean Bannion at August 18, 2011 05:46 PM (HQ77m)
You might want to go back and check the primary sources on those assertions.
When I investigated, I found that Perry had inherited the in state tuition bill from Bush and it had passed overwhelmingly. There was no way he was going to veto it, even if he were inclined. And it has nothing to do with the feds' "Dream Act."
As for the Arizona law, Perry made a pretty standard statement for one governor about another state by saying that some aspects of the Arizona law would not work in Texas. He in no way ginned up opposition to the AZ law.

I was in Munich the week before one Christmas on leave and accidentally found that mentioning that I was alone on leave and had no holiday plans was an amazing icebreaker and foolproof German female aphrodisiac.
It was like having a winning scratch ticket every night that week, (so to speak).

Perry promoted and got passed a Dream Act in Texas in the early 2000s. People here would be killing any other candidate that did that. He famously came out against the AZ anti-illegal immigration law. That also was pretty popular here.
I don't know, you tell me? A Dream Act, really? That's weird I didn't know a Governor could give citizenship to children of illegal aliens. Things must really be different in Texas.
Here is what he said about Arizonas law, you can agree or not, I don't but I am not the governor of texas.
“I fully recognize and support a state's right and obligation to protect its citizens, but I have concerns with portions of the law passed in Arizona and believe it would not be the right direction for Texas,” Perry said in a written statement.
“For example, some aspects of the law turn law enforcement officers into immigration officials by requiring them to determine immigration status during any lawful contact with a suspected alien, taking them away from their existing law enforcement duties, which are critical to keeping citizens safe.”

Shouldn't he be called out on these things? I saw people around here who were rooting for Christie and Ryan to enter previously, but once Perry joined those guys were all of a sudden terrible people based on rumours they would run. I don't get it.
Posted by: Guy Fawkes at August 18, 2011 09:44 PM (4nfy2)
Uh, because they're worried that they will all end up drawing off potential voters from eachother and instead of maybe getting one of them we get one of the others that we definitely don't want.
Its doesn't seem like a hard concept to grasp.

I saw those comments. You're mischaracterizing them, imho.
He said a continiguous fence (actually, I believe he was asked about a wall) from one end of the state to another was impossible. He went on to assert that a combination of fencing (iirc, he made a point of saying near the metro areas) and border patrols would be more effective to secure the border.
PLEASE PROVIDE QUOTES AND LINKS WHEN YOU RAISE A CONCERN. It's not fair to expect us to have to de-bunk unsubstantiated allegations. I realize it's a strategy -- to wear us out so that your charges just hang there like farts -- but if you are arguing/discussing in good faith, stop being so lazy.

Everybody just calls it the dream act. Its basically a state version. In-state tuition for illegal immigrant children of illegal immigrants at state schools. Neither born here. It is unfair to taxpayers in general and specific college age Americans who's parents paid taxes in Texas for decades. Where is their break?

Funny thing about that big wall in China, it doesn't go the whole way.
The Great Wall of China is not a continuous wall but is a collection of short walls that often follow the crest of hills on the southern edge of the Mongolian plain. The Great Wall of China, known as "long Wall of 10,000 Li" in China, extends about 8,850 kilometers (5,500 miles).
Since the Great Wall was discontinuous, Mongol invaders had no trouble breaching the wall by going around it

We have the in state tuition for kids of illegals here to as long as they have lived in the state for over a year like citizens are required to. We also don't have income tax so everyone that lives here pays taxes, legal or illegal. I wish they weren't here but they are. I would just as soon we had a tamper proof social security card which would make it almost impossible for them to be here. In state tuition for their kids isn't a favorite of mine but it isn't a deal breaker.
I'll wait to here his whole plan on the border, I would just as soon do the tamper proof social security card so they couldn't work here. It would take care of most of the problem in my opinion.

Jack Straw,
That was some pretty weak shit, quoting US News and World Report? Even they said it was the "so called" Texas Dream Act recently named after the failed immigration bill last year. The law was passed in 2001, long before anyone heard of a dream act.
Like I said, it's people who call it that are just people that want to make it sound worse than it is.
People like you.
The law when it was passed was called SB 1528.

I agree with perhaps all of your individual points, and certainly your final conclusion.
The problem is that your method left us with John McCain in 2008.
Could Teh Fred or Giuliani have beaten JEF? I don't know, and I think no one can make a very convincing argument either way, because they dropped out too soon. I think the combination of perceived popularity and economics was the reason ... but do we want this to happen again?
Unelectable flakes seem to have tremendous staying power; why make it easy?
I see the current popularity of Perry ... here he seems to have displaced all other contenders, with 6 months to go before the serious campaigning starts. But MM has raised serious issues about Perry that need resolution ... should we start disqualifying other candidates now, before we see the answers?
Clearly, we need someone to cure the national case of typhoid that JEF has inflicted upon us. The time so sort out candidates has not yet arrived.

It doesn't matter what I think or what people chose to call 10 year old legislation this year when Perry started talking about running for office.
What matters is whats on the title of the bill, you know the one he signed. Those are not only the facts, it's the law.

I read Perry's words, he dosn't say one word about "Dream Act".
We have the same law in Washington and it isn't called the Washington Dream Act. Know why? Our Governor isn't running for president.
I will apologize for calling you a liar though. I can see where you got it so I'm sorry. Doesn't change the reason it recently started getting called the dream act though.
Regarding Romney the only thing I have ever said bad about him was the fact that he skipped out on Vietnam and when I said that I said it was a personal thing for me.
